Editorial Reviews

Despite the huge success of her 1991 "I Love Your Smile," Shanice's subsequent efforts failed to make an impact on an audience growing increasingly fond of gangsta rap and less sugary R&B. After biding her time doing background vocals for everyone from Usher and Babyface to Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton, Shanice is stepping back into the ring, this time facing much more competition--on both the pop and R&B fronts. Despite the title of one song, "Just Doin' My Thang," it's never clear what that thing is on this album. From classic-sounding ballads more at home in a cabaret lounge to a leap onto the Miami-bass bandwagon, Shanice proves she has what it takes, even though the package as a whole fails to carve out a clear picture of the artist she has become. Still, it's pretty and polished, with that Babyface touch, so if you're big on slick ballads, you'll love it. --Rebecca Wallwork

It's less an album than the result of a computer program designed by Babyface to create slow jams.

3 out of 5 stars It's worth it for "Give U My Heart".......2007-02-08

The first track seems to be hard to find anywhere else but here, and so for the wonderful songwriting talents of Babyface, the album was worth its secondhand purchase price.

The other songs are listenable, but not exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Boomerang is still #1.......2006-03-21

This is my message to everyone who does not own Boomerang the Soundtrack or the movie; PLEASE GO AND PURCHASE THEM. This movie is a classic and the CD. The funniest song is by Grace Jones, she makes me laugh like crazy, but her lyrics go along with the movie itself. Listen to "Reversal of a Dog", which talks about how Eddie Murphy was dogged out or what is called reversal of another dog whom is Robin Givens. The most romantic songs are by Johnny Gill called "There U Go" and by Keith Washington called "Tonight is Right". This is just some beautiful music! I had both the movie and the soundtrack on what we consider modern day recording VHS and cassette tape. I replaced them with DVD and CD. You know the strangest thing that I realized with the movie itself is the fact that the way they dressed back then or for that particular movie is kind of how some of us still dress for our corporate jobs or to go out on a date in 2006. Some folks are still rockin' Halle Berry's signature haircut, sporting the Robin Givens type hairstyle or hair weave, the tailored fitted business suits. Funny! Enjoy that movie and its CD, they are must haves for your your collection. Can you believe that Boomerang came out in 1992, wow that was about 14 years ago. Amazing!

3 out of 5 stars Grace Jones at her best, vocally. .......2006-03-09

This soundtrack is somewhat mediocre. Most of the songs are typical r'n'b cuts, but unfortunately, the album overall fails. Toni Braxton wasn't a star yet, Boys II Men hit it big time with "End of the Road" and Grace Jones' "7 Day Weekend" remains the highlight of the entire album. Most of the songs are boring, except Braxton's and Jones' tracks there really isn't much to shout hooray for. Mediocre at best.

5 out of 5 stars Sticking to the Script!!!.......2005-05-23

This was the era of conceptual soundtracks. Once you hear the selections you instantly remember the movie itself. The music and songwriting is so infectious, due to the combination of great artist such as Babyface, Toni, Keith Washington, BoyzIIMen, and sticking to the emotions of the script.

The cohesiveness of Face and Toni Braxton starts this disc off very strong with the feel good upbeat "Give U My Heart" (sexy & submissive).

"Tonight Is Right" had every guy working on getting their sound system real sweet at home and tweaking the lights perfectly to woo that lady just as vintage Eddie Murphy has done in the flick.

The airy "I'd Die Without You" is phenomenal while "End Of The Road" is probably the biggest slow jam of the early 90's. It was the classic end of the night song at the skating rink (couples only-backwards skating).

The sensual "Feels Like Heaven" is very hot, yet another classic slow jam tape essential. Newcomer Toni Braxton puts it down on "Love Shoulda Brought You Home", the performance was very seasoned. It portrayed so much conviction reminding us that the things that we have right at home . . . most often are the best things (especially if Halle lives there).

As a real boomerang's flight comes back full circle, I hope that our music someday return back to its moments of truth (Music with substance). Until then I feel good that I can always select the Boomerang soundtrack in itunes and reminisce on those days.

A must-have CD for music lovers of 90's R&B

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack. Great movie!.......2005-03-05

This is the only way to get PM Dawn's "I'd Die Without You" single. I'm glad Im not the only person that loved that track!!! Played very little in the movie, but I play it a lot at home!

Album Description

Shanice, formerly Shanice Wilson, is a Grammy nominated artist with #1 singles and gold albums to her credit. Boasting a five octave voice, it's good to know she's back on the music scene after a five year hiatus. She brings a more adult flavor to this new set of sexy songs. "Every Woman Dreams", is a solid blend that ranges from funky, uptempo grooves that feed the sexual palate, to beautiful full bodied ballads.

THE FIRST 2 TO 3 SONGS ON THE CD I REALLY DIDN'T CARE ABOUT, OR SHALL I SAY I WASN'T FEELING IT. BUT THE REST I REALLY LIKE SHE GET TO THE POINT OF LETTING EVERYONE KNOW SHE LOVES HER MAN AND NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAY. I GIVE THIS ON 4 STARS

3 out of 5 stars Shanice's Happiness.......2006-08-27

I'm not sure I can find words to describe how much I love Shanice's voice. Her voice is amazing, beautiful, rich and striking. If I was a record company owner, I would sign her under mostly any condition she wanted. That's how much I enjoy her voice. I have been a fan of hers her a very long time, and I've been anticipating her return for quite some time. "Every Woman Dreams" is her comeback album, after a 8-9 year absence from the music industry.

The first time I listened to "Every Woman Dreams", I was not impressed: I must not have given it a good enough listen because it is definitely a solid album. Anyone who listened to this LP would know that Shanice is a devoted wife and mother, and she REALLY loves her family. This album was basically written with them in mind. Shanice did write the material on this album, afterall. Although she wrote some nice words, her lyrics were at their pinnacle when Babyface wrote them. Coincidently, the song I liked least on this record was the one that was released first: the title track. I cannot get into that song. The production is almost unlistenable, Shanice sounds selfish and superficial, and the lyrics are corny. She's talking about how a woman needs to find a man who will buy her Gucci bags and diamond rings. "So Sexy" is a nice dance track. I like the production. The lyrics were alright, but this track overall is an album highlight. The most outstanding song on this album is by far "Forever Like A Rose". Most people who own this album are drawn to it, and I am no exception. Shanice sings this song with such passion and such strong emotion that whoever listens to it can just feel her and what she's attempting to convey. "Chocolate" and "Joy" are clearly about her husband, comedian Flex. "Chocolate" was an overall weak song, with weak instrumentation and corny lyrics, but "Joy" is quite the opposite. This is such a nice song, written just for the love of her life. Her voice is exercised greatly on this track. Speaking of which, Shanice covers Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You" for a second time. She first did this song on her album, "Inner Child". On her more current rendition of "Loving You", her voice sounds more mature and her adlibs are a little different. She did a nice job, again.

I enjoyed this album overall. Shanice is one of the most underrated artists in the music industry. I hope that one day she becomes just as exposed at her contemporaries, because vocally, she can give them ALL a run for their money!

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Alot Better........2006-08-03

Im A Big Fan Of Shanice, But This Album Could Have Stayed On The Shelf. With This New Album Her Voice Has Matured Drastically More Powerful And Amazing Than Ever. But This Album Was Too Mushy For Me, Most Of The Songs We Less Than Mediocre,The Lyrics Were Tire Some, And The Production Was Wack. The Only Songs I Like Are Everywoman Dreams,So Sexy, And Take Care Of You. Shanice Didn't Use Her Voice To Her Full Capabalities On This Album, I Miss The Long Drawn Out Notes, And Belting Like She Did On Tracks Like Turndownthelights,The Way You Love Me, Etc. Also The Album Was Not Even Promoted.

3 out of 5 stars A True Disappointment.......2006-04-25

I was rather disappointment in this CD. I mean, its okay! Nothing special at all. I was expecting something.... more. Since Shanice was gone for so long, I thought she was going to "bring it." Instead the entire CD was "I'm so happy I got a man." The entire CD. Song after song, was the same thing. I forced myself to listen to the entire CD, hoping that she would be able to talk about something else. So, my advise is, borrow the CD from a friend.

5 out of 5 stars The best album so far!!.......2006-03-27

This album was so good, I find myself listen to it over and over when I just need to relax(not that there are no other artists available or anything). All I can say is this is not one of those CDs that you buy and regret ever buying it

5 out of 5 stars I wish there were more stars........2006-02-20

Shanice is to me the most underated singer in the business, she sings amazing. No other singer has anything on her and it shows on this album. One of my all time favorite songs is "When I Close My Eyes", which is featured on the album. I hope she finally gets her big break because she deserves it. I wish her the best. BUY HER CD'S, SHE'S GREAT, YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

5 out of 5 stars The Original Princess of R&B.......2006-01-11

Shanice is singer that has seniority in the game really put it down on this album. She released this album when artist like Tracie Spencer, TLC and Whitney where all making a comeback for the millenium and she shined just as well as they did. When I first saw her video for "When I Close My Eyes'" with fashion model Will Lemay I was so glad 2 see her back in the game. This CD is so tight "Doin My Thing" is my favorite and when she sings "You Need A Man" her voice hits notes out of this world she is another favorite artist of mine and when her new cd "Every Womans Dreams" drops trust me I will be there to cop that 2.

5 out of 5 stars Best Shanice Album Ever.......2005-11-03

bought this CD when it first came out years ago and i'm still listening to it today. it's got many great hits. my faves include "Yesterday:, "You Need a Man", and my top fave "Fall For You". I always have that song on repeat because of the great lyrics and the beautiful piano playing from Babyface. that song really makes me melt. Shanice has a great voice and i wish to see more music from her. I also recommend finding an oldie she did with Kiara back in the '80s - "This Time". it came out as a single when she still used her last name Wilson, before she became really famous.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD CD.......2004-05-26

The one thing that I always loved about Shanice is her voice. This girl can blow. I guess these days in the music industry, it doesn't matter if you have a good voice. This CD didn't get the promotion it deserved. Overall, this is a good CD and it was overlooked.

As with many top-notch singers shnice shines on her ballads. "I'm Cryin", "Loving You", & "Silent Prayer" produced by Narada Michael Walden (of "How Can I Ease The Pain" Lisa Fischer). She has a few surprises also with both versions of "I Love Your Smile" & the remix (remix by Hakeem, of The Boys). This is THE Shanice album to get if you are to get one. Wonderful R&B

4 out of 5 stars Above Average 2nd Set Could Be Better!.......2006-08-03

With 'Inner Child' (1991), Shanice had hits with 'I Love Your Smile', 'Silent Prayer', and her rendition of Minnie Riperton's Loving You' was stunning, BUT the CD sufferes from a few filler tracks (including interludes!!). Aside from the filler, I'd recommend 'Inner Child', but prepare to use your 'skip button' a few times! Also, if you own 'Inner Child', consider remastering it by adding BONUS TRACKS like 'Saving Forever For You' (fr.'Beverly Hills 90210' SDTK 1992), 'Don't Wanna Love You' (fr.'Boomerang' SDTK 1992), and THE KILLER JAM 'It's For You' (fr.'Meteor Man' SDTK 1993). I'm suprised the record company didn't do this already, but what can you expect!!

3 out of 5 stars Shanice's inner child is alive and well!.......2004-10-19

Shanice lets her listeners know up front that yes, she does have an inner child, and not only is it alive and well, it is truly visible. Shanice makes it known that she is not only one of the best singers to ever enter the industry, but that she also has a playful side, which is shown on this album. From the silly interludes to the simplistic song lyrics, Shanice shows you that her inner child shines!
The album offers an about even amount of both slow and faster tempoed songs, which is good for those who don't just like to hear one tempo on albums they listen to. "I Love Your Smile" is the album's most successful, and perhaps best single. The song made teenagers and even many adults smile. The catchy chorus and creative versus helped to give "I Love Your Smile" the success that it had. Shanice covered Minnie Ripperton's "Lovin' You" on this album. She really shows her vocal range on this song. One will never wonder why she was given a record contract after listening to this song. "I'm Crying" and "You Were the One" are other beautiful ballads Shanice included on this album. These songs are not only beautifully sung, but they have a deep meaning to them which a lot of people can relate to. Sure, Shanice has a playful side, but she also shows that she has a more serious side with the mid-tempoed "Peace in the World" and "Silent Prayer".
Shanice shows us that she can cover all types of songs on her album. The album is definitely a good listen, but it's not perfect. It is surely worth buying and keeping for years to come.

I had her "21" album and was
rather disappointed. "Inner Child" is much better and this time you can really
hear her voice. On 21 she's just whispering along. Inner child features the
hit "I love your smile", the cover of "Loving you" and the single "I'm
crying". Most tracks are written by N.M. Walden . It sounds typical Walden
and very 90s. It's ok but not my favourite.

Album Description

This eighteen-track compilation drawn from her A&M and Motown albums gives cause for pause. Clearly demonstrating her expansive vocal talent through material that ranges from pop 'n' dance grooves to soulful, heartfelt ballads, Shanice was the vanguard of the new school of teenage female R&B vocalists, with artists like Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica and even Toni Braxton following the path she laid. Shanice has been a recording artist and performer for close to fifteen years with one album on A&M, two on Motown and a 1999 set for LaFace - the Pittsburgh-born, L.A.-raised vocalist has certainly made an impact in the world of pop and R&B. Combined the Motown and A&M sets - all now out of print - have scanned more than 550,000 units.

Includes the 1991 international smash "I Love Your Smile." Not only did it become No. 2 on the pop charts and Shanice's first R&B chartopper but the song became a major global hit, with success throughout Europe, Japan, Australia and South-East Asia.

Contains eight (8) Top 40 R&B hits.

Includes three A&M singles: "(Baby Tell Me) Can You Dance," a Top 50 pop and Top 10 R&B hit; "No 1/2 Steppin'," which achieved black music success without making a pop impression; and "The Way You Love Me."

4 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2006-07-12

I like the song choice on this album. However the best song she ever performed is not on here. "It's For You" from the Meteor Man soundtrack is by far her biggest hit.

Shanice used to be one of my favourite female singers until she 'disappeared' at the end of the 90's. Now I hear she is back, it made me revisit her music and I remember why I loved her voice and music. Cryin, Silent Prayer and Way You Love Me are some of her best songs. She was a big talented force there for a while, and if you listen to this great compilation of her best work, you'll know why. I'm loving this again, and look forward to when I receive her new cd. In the mean time, this is fantastic stuff and something all her fans will appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars A Spectacular Collection From One Of R&B's Most Gifted Treasures.......2005-11-19

It's exciting that Shanice has her best hits and then some all compiled into this greatest hits album. She is indeed one of the most overlooked female singers in the R&B realm and she has what several overexposed female singers today lack: talent. This disc has all the goods; her hits("I Love Your Smile", "Can You Dance?", "No 1/2 Steppin'", "The Way You Love Me", "I'm Cryin'", and "Silent Prayer" to name a few)and some tunes that were never released("Do I Know You", "Just A Game", and "Never Changing Love"). Although there are a few tunes missing on this set, no fan of Shanice's music should be without this one.

1 out of 5 stars The most evil song ever written!.......2005-04-15

In the early 1990s, a singer called Shanice made a recording and a video of the most twee song ever written - "I Love Your Smile".

Hell is room with "I Love Your Smile" playing over and over again 24 hours per day. I think most nursery rhymes have more "edge" than this or anything else Shanice sang! Let's hope she has retired from music and is doing something else with her life, God bless her!

4 out of 5 stars Lyrics "...woman of color".......2004-12-31

I like Shanice. This comp CD is good value for your money. I bought it although I have all her CDs, just to get the original sound of her best on one CD. Here is a question for anyone who has an answer. Does she have a song with the line "...woman of color..."? I cannot find it on any of her CDs. When I heard a song in club in '93 I was sure it was her voice. The only words I could make out were the ones above. Drop me a note and let me know at Ftshabalala@providentbank.com.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely love this CD!.......2007-01-04

I had this CD years ago when it was on cassette and wanted to update my collection. There's lots of music I still need to get replaced from my original collection of cassettes and this was definitely one of them. It takes me back to things I was going through at the time and I believe it's one of Shanice's best CDs she's done.

5 out of 5 stars Who the he** is a music fan?.......2006-08-23

Does that a music fan have to write 50 reviews, seriously?

Anyway, this CD is tight, I just rebought it, I love the interlude for "I Care," "Turn Down The Lights," and "Ace Boon Coon."

5 out of 5 stars STILL LISTENING TO IT ! 12 years later .......2006-02-15

I was 14 when this CD came out and I liked it then, and still like it. One of my favorites is " Don't Break My Heart", I listen to this CD all the time, she can blow! I'm mad her CD didn't get promoted like it should have. Now shes got kids w/husband Flex and has another CD out, that I didn't know about.. but I will definitely check out her other CD's!

    5 out of 5 stars 21...Ways To Grow.......2005-09-24

I have not heard this album before. When I listened to it, I fell in love with it. This was Shanice's coming of age album. Shanice co-wrote half of the songs and coproduced two. She also unveils her newfound sensuality on her funky mix of street-edged grooves and soulful ballads. She had matured mentally and creatively. This album should have been promoted more.

    2 out of 5 stars Didn't like it 10 yrs. ago--18 to 19 producers on it?!.......2004-06-24

I love Shanice's music, but I didn't like this album 10 years ago, and still don't. It started the trend going now of the 18-19 producers crammed on one album. She had too many on there and the album dragged as a result when I listened to it. I nearly fell to sleep in the middle. Some numbers sound too slow and slushy. I liked Turn Down the Lights. But that's the only strong song out of a stale album. I don't know why she didn't have just R. Kelly, Jam and Lewis and Babyface on this album instead of cramming 18-19 producers that gave her some bland songs, some dull material and songs that just don't match with her very great voice. She was excited about turning 21 for this album, but the album didn't sound like it to me. No wonder it bombed so badly. Her '91 album was much better than this and the '99 album was far more superior. This set the standard for some uneven-sounding R&B albums during the '90s.
    Disappointing!

4 out of 5 stars What A Debut Back In 1987!.......2006-08-03

With 'Discovery', Shanice had a few dance hits like 'No 1/2 Steppin' & 'Tell Me Can You Dance', (and a few other filler dud tracks!), but I really enjoyed her slow jams, where she SANG like it was no tomorrow. Songs like 'Do I Know You ?', 'Just A Game', and 'The Way You Love Me' still sound fresh TODAY, and are great illustrations of Shanice's awesome talents. Also, if you own 'Discovery', consider remastering it by adding Shanice's classic duet with Kiara from 1988 titled 'This Time'. I'm suprised the record company didn't do this already, but que sera sera!!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Debut!.......2005-01-17

I can honestly say this is a good debut. It's hard to believe that she was only 14 years-old when she released this good debut. I think she has a really good voice. She sounds like she's in her 20's not in her teens. I really can't say any bad things about this album. I think this album should have gotten more promotion so that it could have gotten a greater success. My favorite songs off of this album are: 1. "No 1/2 Steppin'" 2. "Spend Some Time With Me" 3. "He's So Cute" 4. "I'll Bet She's Got A Boyfriend" 5. "The Way You Love Me" (This song should have made her a star). Anyway I really enjoyed this album. It will go down as one of the greatest albums to come out in the 1980's.

4 out of 5 stars Solid debut when it came out in 1987.......2004-06-30

I remembered when Shanice's first album came out. I still like it to this day. I liked "Can You Dance", but I played the very funky "No 1/2 Steppin" the most. That had a very funky groove to it and could have challenged any of Janet Jackson's "Control" album hits! I loved "I Love" and how she held that note for some 15-20 seconds on it. This was a good first effort for her, she sounded strong vocally, they were smart to keep it to her fun teen image, and it set the tone for her later albums on Motown.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best albums out!.......1999-05-20

Shanice Wilson is one of the best young artist out there, well,I wouldn't say she just started singing yesterday, because she's been doing her thing since she was real young. If you were to ask me,what is one of the best albums to buy,I would say"Shanice,Shanice,Shanice"!You Know the young, beautiful lady who had the hit"I Love Your Smile"out in 1994.Well,the only thing I can say now,is check her knew album out and you will enjoy it!
