Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of spiritual songs.......2006-01-07

Out of 15 songs I would say that 13 of them are great. Overall, the whole album is worth every penny spent.

4 out of 5 stars Kenoly is very skilled.......2001-05-15

Though I am no longer a fan of the praise/worship genre, Kenoly is definitely a cut above most everyone else in the field. He summons a wide variety of talent and demonstrates creativity and energy throughout. I had heard 3 of his other albums before deciding to purchase this one, and the only disappointment came when some of my personal favorites did not make the "best of" cut.

From the Lift Him Up album, two of my favorites were left out: "We Will Wait" and "Hallowed Be Your Name." In addition, several very well-crafted tracks from the God is Able album are left out. Unfortunately, that particular album is not currently available at Amazon, but if there were one Kenoly CD that I would buy, it would be "God is Able".

4 out of 5 stars An awesome CD.......2000-01-27

This CD is one of my favorites, to say the least. It's as if I was at a Ron Kenoly concert, even though it's pieced together from different recordings. I would HIGHLY recommend it to any one seeking good Christian music. I mostly enjoyed the first 8 tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Answered Prayer.......1999-11-01

It was a dark night when I collapsed to pray and heard a voice ask: "What do you want?" After 6 years of grad school, a Ph.D., and ten years of full time university teaching, I was shocked by the brevity of my response -- five letters, two words -- "Use Me!"

Two days later just thumbing through CDs out jumped the title "Use Me" by Ron Kenoly on the Men of Gospel CD.

This song is the perfect expression of my answered prayer. Each time I listen to it I feel lifted up and . . . gone home . . .

If you're seeking music that lives as a miracle, then this song, and this CD, and this artist are for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......1999-06-09

This is a great worship and humorous CD! I had a Maylasian neighbor who allowed me to borrow this CD. I was really blessed with this CD! In fact I'm going to get it for myself and others! Enjoy!

      Album Description

MTV's 'Music In High Places' brings musicians to the most ancient and intriguing sites on earth, and captures their acoustic performances and in-depth interviews during the journey. Unwritten Law's performance in Yellowstone National Park in August almost sounds antithetical to their punk sound, but when you hear the songs in their raw form, you immediately hear what longtime fans have known for years. This is the California band's first Lava release after parting ways with Interscope. 2003.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Well..........2006-08-16

I guess any punk band that goes acoustic nowadays has my respect. I love punk-when it's genuine. The beef I have with today's punk (it's okay, really) is that it's downweighted by all mainstream sounds and expectations from major lables that it can be. The result? Millions of cookie cutter pop-punk lovesick junkie bands. It's good, but after the 5th time around, it gets a bit stolid.

That being said, Unwritten Law does not fit into this catagorie. For one thing they're lyrics are much deeper and, well, more phylisophical to say the least. Not all they're songs are all "my girlfriend dumped me for someone else" or "I just met some hottie and I can already tell she's my soulmate," basically sh** that just doesn't fly in real life. Just read the lyrics to "Seeing Red." But on another level, the guitar is so much more sophisticated. It's not just four power chords making the song sound like a 60's bubble-gum pop band sped up. Unwritten Law are far more advanced musically than that.

Well, now that we have a happy little review of the band as a whole, lets go to the cd, shall we. This 11-track disc features unplugged versions of past works, most of which can be found on the previous studio release, "Elva" (which as a sidenote, I would also HIGHLY recommend.) But it is more than that. Just listen to, say, "Up All Night," the hit song off "Elva," then listen to how it's revamped on "TMIHP" and you'll notice that's it's given a completely different face. The origional version on "Elva," is loud, enjoyable, and overall just a classic punk song even if it never overplayed on the airwaves. The version on here is not necissarily better, but it proves that studio effects were not the driving power of the song. The song just rocks, period.

Unwritten Law do not just confine themselves to Punk. "Rest Of My Life," also off "Elva," is your achtypical alternative pop mainstream music, lovey dovey, you name it, but somehow, Unwritten Law just make it their own. "Elva (the song)" has a life of it's own. It's not your typical pop love song. It's what the radio needs to be playing today. Also imbedded in this is the fact that they don't restrict themself to one punk sound. See, there are a bit different types of punk, from the nemesis of the Clash and the Sex Pistols, To the old school sound of Social Distortion, to the new wave of Green Day, to the poppy mediocrity of today. Unwritten Law covers it all, from the heavy rockin' "Blame it on me" to "rest of my life." This album prooves to me that they can pick up accoustic instruments and not ruin a song like some non-talented artists do. Nuff Said? Great! Music fans that aren't living in a carboard box of media expectations, buy this album. Pick up elva to, eh:)

Oh, and contrary to what amazon has posted, only one track, "blame it on me," is recorded live. the rest are just studion acoustic mixes.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable listen for those quiet days..........2004-12-06

One day at the store, I noticed that this cd had just come out so I bought it. Even though it is basically just acoustical versions of songs off "Elva", it is still a pretty good cd. The production is very well done and the songs sound great in their acoustical versions. Even though I always skip a couple of songs here or there, the rest of them are good. Anyways, grab this one if your an Unwritten Law fan who wants some acoustical versions of their more popular songs.

      5 out of 5 stars Great listen.......2004-01-22

If you like Unwritten Law you will love this. It almost has a very innocent sound to it. It also has an old treasure for old UL fans in the last track. Good Stuff!

5 out of 5 stars NOT for metalheads.......2004-02-04

Not necessarily a review, but a request that Amazon.com somehow splits up the two absolutely dissimilar artists named HIM. This 'H.I.M.' (or HiM) is the brainchild of Doug Scharin, Chicago jazz/post-rock impresario. The other 'Him' is (I guess) some sort of Scandinavian goth-metal. I haven't heard the goth 'Him' so I can not attest to their musical ability, but I doubt they are anywhere near as intense as Doug Scharin's earlier group 'June of 44' (& if you doubt, get a copy of 'Sharks & Sailors'). Either way, a list of the jazz/post-rock 'H.I.M.' recordings available on Amazon may be in order:
        "Egg"
        "Sworn Eyes"
        "Our Point of Departure"
        "New Features"
"Many In High Places Are Not Well"
        "Lila" EP
There are also a series of EPs on vinyl, and a split LP with the Dylan Group. Hopefully this will solve some confusion.

5 out of 5 stars Many in High Places are Not Well.......2003-11-13

This CD has such a wide appeal - melodic jazz beat interspersed with a world music tangible feel. Loved especially the vocals and lyrics both in English and French, such a wide appeal to those of us who don't keep our feet (or our souls) in one small place on the planet. Let's hear some serious airplay for this CD.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great duets album featuring Shelby Lynne's debut track.......2004-03-11

So far, George has released four albums like this, where different guests duet on different tracks, the others being My very special guests, Ladies choice and Bradley barn sessions, so he obviously enjoys this kind of project.

At the time this album was recorded, eight of the singers were current or past country stars while two were unknown. One of those unknowns - Shelby Lynne - has since become a very successful singer, while the other - Tim Mensy - had some success as a singer but has achieved greater success as a songwriter. The eight established stars have all ended their hit-making days, though Emmylou continues to be successful - her albums still sell well.

The big country hit from this album was A few old country boys (with Randy Travis). Emmylou is outstanding on All fall down - not the first or last time she recorded a song with George. Charlie Daniels is brilliant on Fiddle and guitar band. Vern Gosdin is an ideal partner on All that we've got left. Buck joins George for a revival of one of Buck's old hits, Love's gonna live here. Shelby showed that she was a star in the making on If I could bottle this up, her very first recording, although stardom proved more elusive than expected. I've been there is a great fun song. Ricky Skaggs joins George on You can't do wrong and get by, another great song. Ricky Van Shelton swings well on It hurts as much in Texas. Traveller's prayer, an excellent duet with Sweethearts of the rodeo, closes a fine album.

If you enjoy listening to George Jones and you want more than just the hits, this is well worth a listen. Some of the tracks are available on albums by the other singers but most are not. I see that this album has been released in Australia paired with a selection of hits. Some of those hits are from his Sony/Columbia years but some are older. I don't know if they are re-recordings but in any case, it's worth buying just for the first ten tracks (this album) if you can't buy this album in its original form.
