As always, Luther's straight forward, real blues tradition shines on this cd. Mr. Cooke on the sax adds depth and flavor. He's awesome. "Home Alone" is my favorite track on this CD. Truly enjoyable listening time after time.

No other composer so closely kept his fingers on the pulse of American thinking and gave the country so much of what it thought it wanted. "Yiddle on Your Fiddle" tells us more of the second-generation immigrants' desire to become Americanized than all the history and sociology books can ever do. So it is a double pleasure to announce the appearance of "Come on and Hear!: Early Songs by Irving Berlin, 1909-1915" and "Keep on Smiling: Songs by Irving Berlin, 1915-1918," two fantastic CDs or tapes on Oaktown label and released through a friendly little Connecticut company calling itself Original Cast Records. Between the two sets, you have 41 tracks of the Berlin output from "Everybody's Doing It Now" to "We're on Our Way to France." The soloist is Benjamin Sears, who with pianist Bradford Conner has something of a reputation around the Boston area. Now some of this material is duplicated by the more widely known Joan Morrison on two RCA Victor releases, possibly out of print by now; and like those discs could use another voice now and then. (Conner does join in where a duet is called for, but my point remains.) Sears is a capable if not an outstanding baritone, who does justice to these historic expressions of Americana. So not only do I recommend both of these sets for their enjoyment value, but I wish to continue to point out to Social Studies teachers how valuable sets like this would be to classes who have no concept of how people really felt (as opposed to what they merely said and did) "way back when." And I might even stick out my neck so far as to offer to come to any school (in reasonable distance of where I live) to give a sample lesson on how these sets can be used.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary cd to add to your Curtis collection!.......2005-05-06

This is a great CD! This CD is different from Superfly, which all his other works are compared to, but is a definite must have for fans who already own the " People Get Ready" box set and are looking to explore specific 70's albums. Pick this up!

3 out of 5 stars Curtis changing things up.......2004-05-02

This is an okay album for Curtis Mayfield. He had hit big back in the early 70s with his two solo albums 'Curtis' & 'Roots', then taking things to the next level with the mind blowing 'Superfly' soundtrack. 'Back To The World' was a great follow up, but just when everything was going right he kinda went off track in 1974 with the patchy 'Sweet Exorcist' album.

'Got To Find A Way' was a quick follow up to the previous albums lukewarm response. However its pretty much on the same level. Less orchestration & dramatics, more guitar-based work. Its all okay, pretty cool, but wheres all that crazy fonk & fire Curtis had in his artillery only a year or two previously? 'Mothers Son' is the jam here, and the other songs are cool, but it all just sounds a bit flat by his previous standards.

Curtis got back on track with his next few albums musically, but he never made it back to being a major player on the charts. This album is worth checking out only if you have most of my mans 70s back catalogue & are still fiending for some more.

5 out of 5 stars Early seventy's funky stuff !!!.......2002-06-06

One of the first funkiest vinyl's that I buyed during my military services in Germany - 1973.
Still got this item in my vinyl collection. This was really great funky stuff in those early seventy's and far more better than Booker T's Melting Pot.And even today it did'n lost nothing from his funky vibe. Every soul-lover must have this in his collection. Highly recommended, Leslie Jr.

        4 out of 5 stars Underapreciated.......2001-02-23

It seems that after the phenomenal success of 'Superfly', the record buying public refused to take heed of Curtis Mayfield's political voice as well as his skills as a songwriter, both clearly evident on 'Got To Find A Way'.

Like 'Sweet Exorcist', the album is brought to life by a jubilant re-write of 'Love Me (right in the pocket)', originally recorded by Mayfield's first group the Impressions. The record's momentum in hindered slightly by overlong cuts such as this opening track and the title tune, but overall songwriting exellence is conveyed successfully and convincingly by Curtis (as always). Another similarity to the aformentioned 'Sweet Exorcist' is the expanded role of keyboards (namely Hammond Organ and electric piano) on many cuts, adding new colour to the tried and tested formula of guitar-heavy rhthym section accompanied by strings/and horns.

Like 'Sweet Exorcist', this albums is vastly underrated although perhaps not essential to casual fans, I would therefore suggest the Sequel 'Double' series that adds 'Got to Find A Way' to 'Curtis' (his debut), and 'Sweet Exorcist' to 'Roots', both for the price of one album apiece.
