Fresh Cream release dates.......2007-04-18

A note about Fresh Cream's release date(s). I read in a Cream bio that the US release date of Fresh Cream was March 1967. The UK release date being December 1966. The US record was under a different record label than the UK label. If these dates are true people in the US did not hear this excellent album until a couple months into 1967.

My favorite Cream Album.......2007-03-09

Many think that this album is inferior compared to other Cream albums. This is my favorite Cream album, Clapton's guitar work is beyond compare. "Spoonful", "I Feel Free" and "Sweet Wine" show Clapton's talent as a top guitarist as well as his talent as a blues musician on blues songs "Sleepy Time Time", "I'm So Glad" and "Cats Squirrel" as well as his lead vocal on "Four until Late." Gingers drumming is also at its peak on his showpiece "Toad" as well as doing more than keeping time on "Sweet Wine" and others. Jack Bruce's range as a vocalist combined with his talent as a bass and harmonica player are shown on this album more than on any other Cream Album. Though many of the songs aren't original, they sound like no other band when coming from Cream. I would take this album over any other made by Cream, or any other band!

Highly recommended for the unbelievable "creamy" guitar tone on these 4 tracks Sleepy Time Time -Spoonful -Cat's Squirrel -I'm So Glad.
This album and the "beano" Bluesbreakers album are the reason was people still use the Gibson Les Paul in rock 40 years after these recordings, period.

CREAM STARTING...............2007-02-09

Well, I still haven't found this person named Jack (if that's who it really is) who is lecturing under my name in the South. I have heard no mountainside rumblings, no manic mummerings, no foistered fanfare. So, I can only assume all is well and that it is safe again in Metamorpho Land.
Now if only someone could tame that dragon in the west quarter of my castle, then I would be a most happy Seer. But, hey, can we ever have everything go perfectly right in our lives? You answer no? How negative. Let's move on.
Ahhh.... here comes Fresh Cream to relax your inner inhabitions. Yes - the beginning of the power trio. And what a fine beginning it is! Eric Clapton (you know him?), Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker. Three extraordinary musicians. And this album only portends greater things yet to come.
Alot of this album is a hybrid of traditional American blues interpreted by quality British musicians. It is amazing, when you look back, that so many English artists of this era were so taken with the blues. But we are so much better for them putting their own spin, their own staple on this genre.
Jack Bruce, in the compostional sense, took the edge off a little with his original songs. But they somehow always had a sort of "bluesy" aura about them and some mystical rock thrown in. Listen to "I Feel Free" and you'll know what I mean. In fact, throughout this amazing debut, they expound that freedom and stretch the lines further than many conceived of at that time. Clapton (who was shy, I suppose, initially) did not contribute any songs and only arranged a Robert Johnson tune (Four Until Late). This left Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker to fill in the writing chores while relying on standards by the likes of Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. Quite a combination I would say.
The album moves from an uplifting vibration, to slower blues, to sweet harmonic grooves, to harmonica rough realizion. Such a mix. Listen to Jack Bruce's dreamy "Dreaming" and then the bluesy harmonica rave of "Rollin' and Tumblin'" and you get a firm idea of the diversity of this band. Clapton's leads are succint but essential. He grows from this point to masterful leads in later albums. Jack Bruce also uses the bass as an essential ingredient in the music. Matches Clapton note for note. And the undeniable talent of Ginger Baker cannot be questioned. Just listen to "Toad". Remarkable.
To conclude - this is a very respectable first album by giants of the trade. Surely to hear it, you too will be singing "I'm So Glad" as well.
I have really given it a 4 and a half rating. I am not exactly thrilled over the clarity - but it is a minor complaint when compared to the accomplishment.
Now I must go. You know that you're all invited over to have some coffee with Metamorpho. Just don't forget to bring some cream.....

Awesome!.......2007-08-04

I heard Micah performing "I Believe," during a telecast and was immediately impressed to buy the CD. I wanted to hear MORE. When I listened to the songs on this CD I was astounded at the level of musical creativity. The simple lyrics with appropriate background vocal treatments and very creative instrumental arrangements, makes this one of my favorite compilations. Each song is a gem...providing an album that is a true listening pleasure from the beginning to the end, with the exception of "Another Place," which for personal reasons, I did not find particularly universally appealing.

Micah Stampley's second CD leaves no question as to whether he is anointed to minister through music.

I'm blessed to live in the Houston area and have had the opportunity to hear this young warrior minister in person several times with a fresh anointing at each gathering.

Getting the two most personable voices in jazz to sing an hour's worth of George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess (Ella doing all the female parts, Satchmo all the male) was a good idea, but not quite as great as it sounded. Armstrong savors the down-and-dirty Charlestonisms that inspired the cadences of the music and lyrics, and they fit his happy rasp like an old shoe; Fitzgerald, conversely, sounds almost prissy every time she has to sing the word "ain't," though her melodic genius gets Gershwin's bold, supple tunes over. The arrangements are full-throttle Broadway, with a few leaps into Dixieland (including some fine Armstrong trumpet solos), but the disc works best when the vocalists break character and let their jazz side out. --Douglas Wolk

"Porgy and Bess" has just opened (with some controversy) in London's West End, though as a musical and not as an opera as it was originally conceived. Reviews have been promising and I aim to go down and see it soon. I decided to listen to this CD to put myself in the mood. I hadn't listened to it for years and I'd completely forgotten how good it actually is. Ella's voice blends with Louis' perfectly and Russell Garcia's orchestration gives them a dreamy landscape to perform against. I have one or two other CDs by Louis and Ella but this one is by far my favourite. The CD opens with "Overture" and its orchestral performance of classics like "Summertime", "I Wants To Stay Here", "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'" and "It Ain't Neccessarily So" set the tone nicely, leaving one ever so keen for the vocal versions. Louis Armstong has a very rough tone to his voice but the emotion he packs with it is moving, most especially on the mournful "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" And we get all this and Louis' wonderful trumpet playing too?

Gershwin and Gershwin must be among the top composers of the last century and this opera showcases their talents more than anything I've heard. Ella and Louis are peerless as a vocal duo and though I doubt the West End performance will capture the magic in the same way they did, I still remain very keen to go see it. Is it opera or is it a jazz performance? I don't really know. I just know that I love it. And strongly recommend it.

Two thousand five hundred musicians have recorded "Summertime" --- it's a classic. (I bet most Americans can name Janis Joplin and no other singer.) As for "Porgy and Bess," the folk opera from which "Summertime" springs, it's such a classic that it's hard to believe anyone ever had a harsh word to say about it.

But after its premiere in 1935, no less than Duke Ellington said, "It has grand music and a swell play, but the two didn't go together. It does not use the Negro musical idiom --- the times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms."

A quarter of a century later, the producers of the film version had trouble assembling a cast. Harry Belafonte rejected their offer to play Porgy. Sidney Poitier took the part --- and wished he hadn't. Poitier later wrote that the movie insulted black people; when he chose clips of his best performances for his tribute at the American Film Institute, he picked nothing from "Porgy and Bess."

And in 1985, when Grace Bumbry was a sensation as Bess in a Metropolitan Opera production, she slammed the opera: "I thought it beneath me, I felt I had worked far too hard, that we had come far too far to have to retrogress to 1935."

All that may be. All I know is that I have, in a long life, rarely been confronted with more genius than in the Fitzgerald/Armstrong recording of "Porgy & Bess." Set aside the achievement of George and Ira Gershwin in transforming DuBose Heyward's novel into a folk opera. Let's just focus on Armstrong and Fitzgerald, who were at the peak of their popularity when this record was made in 1957.

"Summertime" --- the first song --- sets the tone. A baleful horn figure, then violins. And then Armstrong's trumpet: slow, steady, dignified. But wait --- here comes a slurred note. And a cool little improvisation. Just enough of each. Very tasty.

Fitzgerald sings a verse. She is cool and formal. A lady. Not to be taken lightly. Now it's Armstrong's turn. Tender, but let's not kid ourselves --- this is not singing as others define it. This is melodic speech: rough, gutteral. And thus he is ideally cast: His Porgy may have his charms, but he'll have to stretch to keep Bess.

And so it goes throughout the CD. Trumpet mastery --- Armstrong has dazzling control. His tone is bright, but never shrill; there's a warmth in his playing no one else could produce. And Fitzgerald is just a study in inevitability; to hear her is to wonder how anyone could sing these songs any other way.

The queen of the jazz vocal.

There are no-brainers, and then there is this Ella Fitzgerald-Louis Armstrong collaboration --- music that imprints on your soul.

The fusion between the great two voices and the orchestra is just brilliant. Very good brass and violins that accompany Fitzeralds and Armstrongs magic voices leaves you with your mouth open.

Have to agree with the review saying that this is a superb collection but it is ridiculously overpriced. The solution: wait a bit and buy a second-hand one from Amazon, they are listed already at around 13 bucks.

Just too expensive!.......2007-05-05

This star rating is low because of the price. As of this writing, it's listed at over $50! I am a die-never James fan. I have all their CDs, plus their previous "Best of," plus some CD singles, live DVD, etc. I love their music, and have made numerous mix tapes and CDs introducing friends to this wonderful band's music. I was heart-broken when they broke up, and I was elated when they reunited. I couldn't wait until they released new music, but for only a couple new songs, I can't justify buying these same songs yet again. Twenty bucks, thirty - maybe. But over $50 is over the line. The single disc version is equally ridiculous at $35, and it doesn't have the new tracks.

Anyone encountering this who's new to James, I strongly encourage you check out either their masterpieces (Laid, Seven) or The Best of James, a much better value with basically the same songs (it just doesn't have the latter day stuff from the excellent Millionaires and Pleased to Meet You, but it's still a great overview).

I'm sure this collection is great - after all, the songs all are. But for this price, I have to pass. I'll have to find some other way to get my hands on the new tracks and continue waiting for their next proper album

I'm a big fan of seventies music. Among the tremendous musical diversity born in that period was funk. This is one of its finest examples. Most importantly it's just great, original music made extra special through the remastering process.

One of the greatest funk recordings ever.The above review has it right: the 'alternate mixes' are in fact alternate takes. This is my third CD copy of it and it sounds the best of all by far. BTW My first CD copy is signed by the drummer Andy Newmark who I was lucky enough to do a recording session with a few years back.

4 1/2 stars-- cooled off........2007-05-17

After the dark, claustrophobic masterpiece of "There's a Riot Goin' On" and following the departure of bassist Larry Graham, Sly Stone turned his band's attention to a bit of a cooled off sound. This could have been in response to the demise of the powerful rhythm section of Graham and drummer Gregg Errico, who had left prior to 'Riot', but I think in some ways it was a response to the overwhelming nature of its predecessor-- "There's a Riot Goin' On" is an experience to listen to, making it must have been extraordinary.

This isn't to say that "Fresh" is light pop fare. On the contrary, it's a fantastic record, dark in its own way, but it's really quite a bit less intense then its predecessor. At its best, it finds a midtempo, loping sound over which Stone can wail out full of passion and the band can form a swirl around him, single and standout "If You Want Me To Stay" is a fine example of this-- the bassline provides a graceful drive, Stone is passionate in his lead vocal, and the horns cascade around him. By and large, the album sticks to this midtempo funk, driven by the basslines and at times angular guitars ("In Time") or swanky horns ("Skin I'm In"). Stone does develop a tendency to mumble and ramble here and there ("Frisky"), but by and large the great on this one manages to blindingly overshadow the bad and Stone proves stunningly inventive, even taking a schlock Doris Day pop song and making it into a fantastic soul/gospel number ("Que Sera Sera") and survives a remake of hit "Dance to the Music" as a chilled funk number ("Keep on Dancin'", which proves to be quite engaging).

This reissue has been remastered and adds a handful of alternate mixes as bonus tracks as well as including new liner notes. The bonus tracks here are interesting-- Sly Stone had tinkered substantially with the mix on "Fresh" before settling on its released version, although at some point in its early CD release history, alternate mixes for some of the record leaked out (and were quickly recalled by the label). Some of these are actually quite superior to the original mix, illustrating significantly more space and occasionally benefitting from a lack of overdubs-- "Let Me Have it All" is the best example of this, without the layers of vocal overdubs, Sly's vocal really shines. The remastering on this is equally top notch, the record sounds great throughout.

"Fresh" is always going to be thought of as the album that followed "There's a Riot Goin' On"-- it's not quite as good as its predecessor (or as "Stand!" before that), but truthfully this came at the end of a window where Sly Stone could do no wrong. "Fresh" is a fine record in its own right. Highly recommended.

In Time Fresh Just Gets Fresher.......2007-04-14

'Fresh' is a Sly album that is always in an awkward possition because it comes as the follow up to Stand! and
There's a Riot Goin' On ,both of which are considered classics.But trying to judge any Sly & The Family Stone did in the late 60's and early 70's is like trying to debate which chocolate you like best.If you love chocolate,you love it all.One thing 'Fresh' really helps you understand about Sly Stone is that he's a slick producer.Not in the sense of over doing it but how he takes,for example the first song "In Time" with it's gritty organ/guitar sound and get it all to sound smooth as melted caramel all at the same time.The best part about that song is the use of the rhythm box beat;unlike like drumming it gives the music a very exotic,modern feel and a lot of emotion rather then sound cold and artificial.Even more interesting to note is that "Let Me Have It All","Skin I'm In' and "Keep On Dancin",something of a reprise of "Dance To The Music" from six years earlier all share the same style-deep,brooding but funky and never at a slow crawl as the music on the previous album was.On the hit "If You Want Me To Stay" the absense of Larry Graham comes to the surface as newcomer Rusty Allen takes a more timid bassline but the song itself showcases an important theme;'Fresh' is an album about Sly letting go of the past and creating a new future;Sly tells us that if we "want to him stay" he'll be around but we should let him be himself in the meantime.The same theme extends into Sly's version of "Que Sera Sera",which takes the frothy meloncaughly of the Doris Day original into pure gospel/blues passion (plus primetime drama lovers will note it was featured in an episode of 'Judging Amy').The "old" Sly & The Family Stone is best represented on "If It Were Left Up To Me" with that perky horn style of "Everyday People" and,lyrically is matches up very well with the mildly claustraphobic funk of "Babies Makin' Babies",a flat out terrific funk tune that really does the impossible;it's funky and cool at the same time,two things that seldom go together.All five of the bonus cuts being alternate takes you get to see 'Fresh' in the trial and error stages with echo plexed vocals on "Frisky" and the music on "Babies Makin' Babies" kept even further in the backround.As for this CD the remaster of 'Fresh' is excellent,especially the stereo seperation which makes the album sound more genuine then even the first CD reissue.Plus the fact you get very good liner notes that actually enhance the listening experience rather then detract from it.So as an album (if you never heard it before this) 'Fresh' lives up to it's title by being an ear catching musical experience that will draw you right into it's grooves and melodies.And even if you've already heard it a million times this will make you love it all over again.

This is a band that actually tried to change things.Biafra ran for mayor, Cops came to their shows beacause of the smart lyrics the cops had to be on guard . DK burst on the scene in the late 70's with an innovative and extremely funny sound. Blending elements of punk, hardcore and rockabilly with lyrical content based souly on political awareness the Dead Kennedys were leading the charge on the movement of getting the word out. Lead by master lyricist Jello Biafra (who was a man on a mission), surf rock guitarist East Bay Ray, bass player extraordinaire Klaus Flouride and Ted on drums. The Dead Kennedys were embarking on a dangerous and untraveled road against all odds. This reissue of their debut is a perfect starting point for all those revolutionaries out there who truly want to listen to something important.Many great songs here. There are a few fillers on the album but those tracks don't take away from the intensity of 'Fresh Fruit'. As a bonus with this reissue you get a 55 minute documentary dvd which offers insight into the beginnings of DK. Early performances of the band which are out of this world, interviews and Jello's short run for Mayor of San Francisco. Incredible to say the least.

Doug E. Fresh is definitely one of the pioneers of hip hop but also of party hip hop. From that Genre with the exception of Biz Markie and Heavy D and Kid and Play, nobody had dance floors packed like Doug E. Fresh.

The Show & La Di Da Di (with Slick Rick) has to be one of the top 5 greatest rap/party singles ever release on wax hands down. And just when you think there was no way Doug E. Fresh could ever top "The Show" then the single "Keep Rising To The Top" came later on and had the Summer of 88 on pure lockdown.

This album is particularly memorable for me being that I live in the D.C. area and Doug E. Fresh was one of the first, if not the first hip hop artist to record live with a D.C. Go-Go Band when he recorded "I'm Getting Ready" w/D.C.'s own Rare Essence which was a smash in the Choco City and the rest of East Coast. That single is also on this album along with one of my favorite Doug E Fresh joints, "D.E.F.=Doug E. Fresh". "Cut That Zero" was a head knocker in which he sample Levert's "Cassanova" and reportedly got in a lot of legal trouble for sampling it without permission. I still think the "All The Way To Heaven" Lp is slightly better but there isn't a bad Doug E Fresh Album from back then anyway so it's all good. I'd wish they'd release a real Doug E. Fresh greatest hits joint and give him his just due like they do all the other artist who helped pave the way cuz Doug E. definitely put his work in and paid his dues.

Takes me back!.......2007-01-11

This CD is special because it was when rap music was easily understood. The lyrics were telling a story about something most people could relate to and repeat without anyone getting offended. At the time of its release I was a college student and I only had the cassette tape. I played it all the time before my basketball games to get me hyped to play my games. This CD is also a friendly reminder of when I first got out college, bought my first car and my own apartment. After tape players became ancient, I couldn't find this on CD and I was devastated. All record stores told me it was out of print. Thanks to Amazon, I'm able to revisit the beginning of my adult life when things were simple and I didn't have a lot of responsibilities. Even to this day I use the lyrics of this CD in my everyday conversations and it is unreal how many people have never heard of the phrases (like "cut that zero"). This a probably Doug E. Fresh's best CD he ever made.

I first heard this album was in 88 when it fist came out I was like 12 or 13 at the time. I dubbed a copy from my cousin and I played it so much that the taped poped. The last time I can remember hearing it was in late 89 early 90. I feel the same way about this album now as I did then. Doug was on point with his ryming for the era of this album and is a MUST BUY every Old School Hip Hop artafacts library.This album got much respect on the streets back then, and it still does from me

I bought this CD before Amazon listed the tracks and was disappointed it did not contain the song "The Show". I did locate "The Show" on Old School Jams Volume 3 in case others are looking for that song.

Maynard Ferguson had a long recording career for many different labels and availability of his various albums has been spotty at best -- they have gone in and out of print over the past few years, so it's worth getting them while they are available.

This CD is interesting as it contains two albums Maynard recorded for the Camden label in 1964. It fills an interesting gap in the Maynard works available as I write this -- you can buy the "Birdland Dream Band" album from 1956, but most of his work from 1957 through early 1964 was on the Roulette label and those albums aren't current available (there was a Mosaic box set issued several years ago; used copies sell for many hundreds of dollars today). Likewise, his other mid-60's albums -- which were recorded on Mainstream -- appear to be available only in digital version.

So -- if you want to hear Maynard in his mid-60's form -- this album (which appears to be imported from Spain) is worth getting while you can. it's good, "small" big band jazz, and similar to what you get on the other Maynard albums of the time. For the most part it's swinging, straight-ahead jazz, with a number of high-note trumpet features for Maynard and some tasty solos by some of his talented sidemen.

If you only know Maynard's later work (from the 70's, 80's or 90's), which had more jazz/rock and pop stuff mixed into it, you owe it to yourself to get this and/or "Birdland Dream Band" to sample his earlier work.

The New Sounds Of The Maynard Ferguson Orchestra is a very tasty album. The CD release actually features two of Maynard's original LP's all on one CD. The first is called "Come Blow Your Horn." The Second is called "The New Sounds Of Maynard Ferguson." The best tracks that stick out are "Danny Boy", and "Bossa Nova De Funk." I also like Alex North's, "Theme from Antony and Cleopatra." I loved the original album cover, the one with Ferguson sitting under the tree playing his horn with the dog standing by him!! These are originally released on the old Cameo Parkway label, which is now defunct. A very worthy purchase!!!!!

We should be sick of Ralph Covert--the lone inhabitant of Ralph's World--by now. In only five years, he's put out six discs' worth of mostly the same hoot-worthy, hand-clappy, good-time, anytime, play-it-loud stuff. But here's the thing: Ralph never gets it wrong. As kids' musicians go, he's as close to the Beatles as they get, both in terms of sound and sheer brilliance. Which makes it almost tedious to report that Green Gorilla, Monster & Me is, within its genre, a minor masterpiece. "Monster," a monster of a party song about an adopted mutt who's both "the softest snuggler on the couch" and "the wettest kisser on the mouth," manages to sketch out Ralph's mojo in the span of three minutes; "I Don't Wanna" reinforces it by way of a whip-smart lesson in Punk 101; and "Old Red Number 7" brings it home with a classic, thoughtfully sung slice of nostalgia. As redundant as it is to spread the word that Ralph rules, then, he leaves us little choice--parents of preschoolers from Shreveport to Saskatchewan will never be so eager to welcome a green gorilla into their play basements. --Tammy La Gorce

(Warning, this review is a template for all my Ralph's World reviews, but strewn throughout are specific comments pertaing to this specific album)

Ralph's World is music performed by an adult, but in the voice of a child. Of course, this is the goal for all children's artists, but sadly, much of what is on the market is simplistic and condescending. Ralph's World is childlike through and through. His music looks at the world from a child's perspective, and delivers in songs both children and adults find so appealing. This is one of those rare artists who would be enjoyed by most generations if he were to, say, perform in a park or community theater. Kids, adults, even grandparents would get lost in the feel good music world of wonder, excitement, imagination, and goofiness children live in (and need). We played this album, along with happy Lemons and Kid Astro at a b-day party, and the adults had no problems listening to the discs all day.

I initially tried to compose a list of songs my two sons enjoyed the most, but it turns out they like just about every one. But unlike clothes, books and toys they will outgrow, and do not interest adults, this album is simply good music even for adults. More than once I found myself listening to this music (and hitting replay after songs like Old #7, and River Flow) after the kids have long left the car or room.

But don't get me wrong: this album is deservedly 100% for children. Our children deserve good songs, positive and realistic themes, and good musicianship. They get it all here, and we get to enjoy some of the benefits as well. I'm sure my boys will "outgrow" this album some time, but I know this CD will remain in my collection. And I know I can make a greatest hits compilation strictly for myself using songs from this and other albums, filling the CD to its 80 minute capacity.

For parents searching for a good way to introduce great music to their children, without worrying about content being unacceptable, this CD is amazing. We are music aficionados and wanted to introduce our 2-year old daughter to rock and roll without exposing her to mature themes. Green Gorilla, Monster & Me is perfect for that!

We love this CD, and it's recently released brother, Welcome to Ralph's World. Our 2.5 year old requests this CD in the car every time we get in! We can actually use it as a way to get him moving if we are in a hurry! The songs are all light hearted and silly enough to keep a kid involved, but can even captivate the imagination of the grown-ups in the car! My son and I sing all the songs together, and my husband and I will even hear the tunes from the monitor as he sings himself to sleep at night, he loves them that much. Our son is a huge music lover, so this was a great match!
