Banjo player Bela Fleck has a world-class set of chops and a willingness to follow his muse wherever it takes him. The band ranges far and wide once again on the The Hidden Land it opens with a Bach Fugue, delves into swing, has a bit of bluegrass, does progressive rock, and jets to several other locales. But the everything-and-the-kitchen sink concept is still considerable more streamlined than 2003's Little Worlds, an overproduced and under-focused three-CD set. Highlights here include Fleck's pickin' on a progressive country stomp called "Weed Whacker" and the playful "Couch Potato," which has a hyper edge that doesn't match the sedentary implications of the title. The band's telepathic interaction is highlighted on the Middle East-influenced "Chennai," where musical lines are played in unison or tossed back and forth, making the song crackle with energy. The broad aesthetic and restless sonic changes might be a bit much for some, but a patient survey of this album will be rewarded. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of their best and most well-rounded offerings.......2007-08-03

What more can be said about this extraordinary group of musicians? Having seen the band perform much of this album live, I rushed quickly to get my copy. I was absolutely blown away by this disc. Every track is gorgeous and lush. "The Whistle Tune" gripped me with its beautiful, tender melody and Celtic undertones. "Weedwacker" is a non-stop assault, which twists, turns, and evolves, before it plops breathlessly into the laid-back "Couch Potato". "Misunderstood" and "Rococo" are some of my favorite tracks with their detached beauty and subtlety. The whole album makes for a very pleasant, groovy, and breathtaking experience.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, Innovative, Fleck.......2007-02-21

The band started to get carried away with guest appearances (Outbound, Little Worlds, etc.) that it was almost unbearable and overwhelming. Their compositions suffered because instead of something designed for specifically the Flecktones, other things came out of the woodworks (not to say that all of it or any of it was bad, but it was almost too much).

When I listen to this album, not only does it feel more original and fresher than anything I have heard Bela and the Flecktones do (at least after listening to their older albums for long spans of time), but this album just has a more intimate and naturally revealing side of the Flecktones. This is an album that will make you think, "Wow I was not expecting that! I kind of like it! Give me more!" and the more you listen to it, the more you feel like you are on the same page as them. This is a more mature album, not one for someone who does not already know how Bela Fleck speaks, so please do not listen to this as a novice listener, it sends a false first impression. The music is more jazz-like than before, and all of the songs flow together. The Flecktones take the listener on an epic adventure like none of the albums have really done before. With the major peaks (in my opinion) being the transition from Fugue to P'lod, Labyrinth, Weed Wacker>Couch Potato>Chennai, this album hits hard from the getgo.

I have always wondered, what will they do next? Bela plays guitar on here, Futureman plays a lot more acoustic drums (which is soooo refreshing), Jeff plays the flute quite a bit, and Victor is always amazing. This album keeps the Flecktones in my top five best bands of all time; The Hidden Land is indeed another album that leaves the listener wanting much more, just like the others. Although, I really like this style the most, I hope they produce more of this gold.

-Aaron

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable listening........2006-12-09

After several Flecktones albums (including 2003's ambitious triple CD Little Worlds that found the act collaborating with all-star guests including Derek Trucks, Branford Marsalis, and Bobby McFerrin), the group chose a back-to-basics approach for its latest release "The Hidden Land".
The disc solely features the Flecktones quartet, comprised of bassist Victor Wooten, percussionist Roy "Future Man" Wooten, and saxophonist Jeff Coffin. Together, the band expertly hones its trademark combination of bluegrass, jazz, funk, and rock influences within a more spacious and stripped-down environment.
The band has been together for 17 years, always trying to find the right next thing to do and not repeat themselves.
Having a lot of guests playing with them was an incredible amount of fun, but if they were to continue along that path, they would become very predictable.
Banjoist Bela Fleck hooks back up with his longtime backing group The Flecktones featuring longtime electric bass stalwart Victor Wooten. Their music is a mix of Americana, funk grooves and jazz and makes for pleasant if unchallenging listening. After opening with a brief Bach classical composition, the group moves into "P'lod in the House" which kicks the tempo up with pulsating electric bass and funky drum breaks. Wooten's bass is an active presence in almost every performance on this disc, especially on "Labyrinth" where it underpins pensive sounding flute and saxophone solos while scatted vocals bubble just underneath the surface.
There's a brief acoustic interlude on "Who's Got Three" with unamplified banjo (fingers scraping quite audibly on the fretboard) and clarinet taking center stage. Funky bass moves back into the forefront with the upbeat "Weed Whacker" with some quick pickin' and bouncy saxophone. "Subterfuge" gets a little more adventurous as the band jumps the rails of its comfort zone with an electric guitar solo, before ending things on a back-porch note, pickin' the banjo and tootin' on the flute for "The Whistle Song." Jam band fans will find a lit of grooves to like here, and while I found myself wishing that they took a few more chances, the album does make for pleasant if unchallenging background music.

1 out of 5 stars A Great Imitation of Their Own Style.......2006-11-18

Reading between the grooves, it sounds like there was a contractual obligation to produce a new album. Great playing. Innovative compositions. It's hard to pinpoint why these great musicians somehow just didn't manage to get this bird in the air. However, nothing about it really inspires, entertains or surprises.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant (newly defined) mix of genres.......2006-11-02

This was my introduction to Béla Fleck and it served me very well. It's supposed to be very different than previous albums (more jazzy) and this is absolutely well done. I find it magnificient! You should have a (at least small) taste for jazz sounds, otherwise, "Hidden Land" won't work for you.

Not all songs are good, but what do you expect? I like most: Rococco, Kaleidoscope, Weed Whacker and The Whistle Tune.

Buttom line: In my view, Béla Fleck's sound and melodies have evolved for the better in the past years. It's getting more unique every time. I like it!

English composer Robert Prizeman has taken a conventional English boy's choir--usually a haven for sweet songs and ecclesiastical renderings--and made them contemporary without selling out any of their intrinsic charm. Their stacked choral voices and lead sopranos, dressed up with electronica rhythms, synthesizers, and strings still sound like they could be coming from the church balcony, even while they exude an Enya-like appeal. While there are adaptations of Gregorian chants and Sibelius hymns, most of the songs are Prizeman originals based on those styles, with texts often drawn from Latin Liturgy. Except for the chilled romanticism of "Stay With Me," and the rhythm driven "Adoramus," whose chorus sounds like a Harry Potter incantation, few of the songs on Free have the anthemic pop appeal of "Salva Me" or "Vespera" from previous albums. Instead, Prizeman has opted for a more serene sound on Free, even with their first video from the disc, the yearning "I Am the Day." Some of it, like Prizeman's setting of a Walter de la Mare poem on "A Song of Enchantment," gets lugubrious. But most of Free floats on gentle soprano breezes, intrinsically innocent, even if the boys might be smoking cigarettes behind the altar. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars HEAVENLY.......2007-06-19

This cd is like listening to a heavenly choir. "Free" is an awesome audio experience. It can turn a stressful day into a calm evening.

5 out of 5 stars Sweetest voices ever!.......2007-06-16

I happened across this CD at Borders and was able to listen to it! One of the sweetest and heavenly CDs ever! I bought two: one for myself and one as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-01-04

I never knew that young boys could have such wonderful voices, almost angelic. The music is very relaxing and haunting at times, but that's what makes it a good album to hear to. The harmonies were so beautiful. To all choir fans, this is a must-have album.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing and thought provoking.......2006-02-23

Libera is an amazing group of boys and Robert Prizeman really knows how to put everything together. My favorite songs on "Free" are Voca Me, Stay With Me, Adoramus, I Am the Day and Twilight. Each time I listen to this disc, another song seems to start growing on me. This was my first Libera CD (I have since bought Luminosa, Libera and Visions) and at first I liked the faster more upbeat songs but as time went on I started to really love the softer ones like Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep (beautifully done by Ben Crawley and Joseph Platt). The soloists are lovely with clear and pure voices, and the chorus just swells with harmonies. This is choir music for people who hate choir music.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Crystal.......2006-02-20

Like Luminosa, this is incredible. I can only compare it to the beautiful, pristine, classical pieces of antiquity, such as Vivaldi's Spring and Bach's many ethereal melodies. It's beautiful.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Who Classic Masterpiece AS YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE.......2007-06-12

The Album is a masterpiece of all time rock n roll, even if this is "the less Who album" of the Who... but nevermind!
The Sound in both Stereo (from the original master tape discovered in the vault of UMG) and 5.1 (mixed by Pete Townshend himself) is great...
As you put the disc in your player you'll hear the great differences from the 1996 reissue even if you have only a "simple" CD player..
If You're a great Who fan and you a have SACD player buy ABSOLUTELY this album and enjoy it 'til the laser of your player won't work anymore...
The second disc is clearly for fans only but the quality of some track even if are demos or outtakes is very very good!!

5 out of 5 stars A Landmark Classic Now Made Even Better........2006-12-26

One of the most important, groundbreaking amd influential albums in the history of rock and roll, The Who's 1969 magnum opus "Tommy", a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure plays a mean pinball, is now better than ever thanks to the brilliance of SACD and DSD remastering techniques.

Every song on the cd sounds like it was recorded just yesterday. It is 100 % crystal clear, perfectly remixed and remastered. It gives you a clearer view of the story as well as a more pleasurable than ever listening experience. Pete Townshend and the people involved in this truly put their hearts into making "Tommy" better than ever.

The bonus disc is also worth it. A lot of awesome raritis. The liner notes are an interesting read, and the album itself is of course a masterpiece nobody should be without.

5 out of 5 stars A Milestone of Early Rock!.......2006-09-29

"Tommy" is beyond question one of the big milestones of early rock. Musically the band were at the peak of their creativity.

All band members were obviously extremely talented musicians and both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were/are great singers. Apart from few exceptions like "Cousin Kevin" all songs are outstanding; and it's really great to have the whole story on one CD - compared to the old double vinyl album.

Though the storyline may seem a little weird today ( to me it always did ), there is so much great music on this album.

The second bonus CD gives a very interesting insight in the developement of some of the songs. Though the sound quality is exellent CD 2 will mainly be of interest to hard-core Who fans. None of these alternate versions are better than the ones chosen for the album, though a few come close. The studio version of "Young Man Blues" which did not appear on the original album is a nice addition too!

5 out of 5 stars I Love it !.......2006-09-06

I was so blind-sided by this reissue - really. I have looked at this for a few years now, but I never picked it up. My impression of this was that it had some very good music along with some dated sounding tracks, so it wasn't a high priority. I'd been having very good luck buying hybrid SACD's even though I don't own a SACD player; the CD layers benefit greatly from the DSD mastering, making them stand head and shoulders above the latest PCM remasters (there are a few exceptions), so I decided to take the plunge.

The CD layer is stunning. I must have been sitting there with my mouth open after "Overture" began. I experienced emotion that wasn't there on previous listens to this on CD and vinyl. Yes, some of the tracks still sound dated, but most of this album is very good indeed, and this remaster is so incredible. If you own a great stereo rig, I highly recommend buying this - in fact, even if you don't have a great rig, I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Who's classic rock opera gets a 35th birthday celebration fit for a king!.......2006-08-13

The Who's fourth studio(and fifth overall) album Tommy was released in May of 1969.
The Tommy album by The Who was the make or break for the group because if Tommy had failed, The Who would have probably disbanded due to lack of funds despite their concerts selling out based on Pete Townshend's guitar smashing and Keith Moon's drum kit demolishing at the end of each gig.
Guitarist Pete Townshend, under the gun after I Can See For Miles failed as a single in the UK(although it was their biggest ever hit here in the US) came up with a rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind kid named Tommy whom becomes those aforementioned things after witnessing an event as a child that traumatized him(his father killing his step-father whom he considered his father).
Originally considered to be a single length album, the band felt it didn't make sense so they expanded it into a double album and the result is one of rock's Top 10 greatest double studio albums in history(alongside other classic double albums like the then-already released Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland and The Beatles' White album and would help pave the way for more classics like The Rolling Stones' 1972 masterwork Exile on Main Street, The Who's 1973 release Quadrophenia, Elton John's 1973 classic Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Genesis' 1974 masterwork The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Led Zeppelin's 1975 classic Physical Graffiti, Pink Floyd's 1979 masterpiece The Wall and Bruce Springsteen's 1980 classic The River among many others).
Alot of classics appear on this album like the Overture, the classic Top 20 hit Pinball Wizard, Amazing Journey, the Underture(best instrumental on here which is basically a repeat of the album's other instrumental Sparks), Go to the Mirror, I'm Free, Cousin Kevin(one of bass player John Entwistle's greatest compositions), Fiddle About(about the perverted Uncle Ernie), Tommy's Holiday Camp(another excellent ditty written by drummer Keith Moon whom did an excellent rendition in the film version of Tommy in 1975) and the classic finale We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me Feel Me.
The other tracks on the album It's a Boy, 1921(You Didn't Hear It), Eyesight to the Blind, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Do You Think It's Alright, There's a Doctor I've Found, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, Smash the Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson and Welcome are all great pieces as well though tend to be overlooked.
The album made The Who legends for good and peaked at #4 on the Billboard chart and was their first Gold seller(eventually Platinum).
In 1996, the album was re-released as a remastered CD but used different masters for the remixed reissue.
In October of 2003(just in time for Tommy's 35th Anniversary), Geffen Records(formerly known as MCA) re-released the album as a 2-disc Hybrid SACD with the original mix on the CD layer and a killer 5.1 mix on the SACD layer and this version uses the very original tapes that were found in Universal's vault after being said that the original tapes were destroyed by Kit Lambert in a fire. As a result of the discovery of the original tapes, the sound quality is amazing on here.
Disc two has great outtakes and demos like I Was, The Who trying to record Sally Simpson with hilarious results and instrumental versions of Tommy Can You Hear Me and Tommy's Holiday Camp among many other rarities plus a cool booklet with rare photos.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic "FREE SOUL" .......2007-07-24

The new Japanese import "FREE SOUL" by Diana Ross is wonderfully eclectic and oddly selected. This CD compiled by Toru Hashimoto contains 24 oddly selected tracks from various album sources. Songs such as "Bah-Bah-Bah", "I'm A Winner", "He's All I Got", "Smile", and "Baby It's Love" are delightfully peppered along side monster hits like "I'm coming Out", "The Boss", and "Love Child." Despite the eclectic grouping of songs the collection is charming and shows a broad range for Diana Ross. The packaging however lacks luster. The cover photo is a dark faded imagine from the "Touch Me In The Morning" photo session.

4 out of 5 stars Little Richard on "I Feel Pretty" alone is worth the price........2007-06-08

Bought the CD through Amazon after hearing the Little Richard cut, "I Feel Pretty". Playing to type, LR gives one of his all time best performances. This cut alone is worth the price of CD.

The rest of the CD - fair (Tevin Campbell - poor song choice for his otherwise cooool voice) to good (Selena - expected better) to outstanding (Aretha)

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-12-17

Hearing Little Richard sing "I feel Pretty" is worth the price alone!
I found this to be a really neat way to introduce younger generations to this classic Broadway show.

I would love to see more R&B versions of Broadway hits.

5 out of 5 stars A contemporary , edgy version worth buying!.......2005-09-19

This is a welcome, edgy adaptation of the classic songs of West Side Story. While the original version brought the concept of inner-city gangs to the consciousness of middle America, it was necessarily sterilized to make the message more palatable.

THESE versions of the familiar songs help us imagine the reality... the tension, the passion, the despair, and the love.

Fresh sounds for a new audience, this will be enjoyed by long-time West Side champions, as well.

2 out of 5 stars Self-indulgent crap.......2004-05-07

There are a few high points to this disc which I suppose make it worth owning, but on the whole I find it extemely off-putting. "Somewhere" will bring tears to your eyes, but, alas, the producer seemingly didn't have the balls to tell AF to wrap it up--and so it becomes tedious, the opposite of tasteful self-restraint. And Patti LaBelle? Well, she is the patron saint of masturbatory yammering. On the other hand, Brian Setzer cuts loose on "Jet Song" in a way that'd be certain to put a smile on the face of Mr. Bernstein. There are some nice interpretations, but all in all, it has an inorganic, overproduced, Yamaha DX7'y sound.

5 out of 5 stars This is a real gem!.......2004-01-19

What a fabulous collection of re-interpretations of these classic songs!
I take my hat off to David Pack for doing such a fantastic job on the arrangements. I just can't praise this CD enough! I wish the label had done more to promote this recording! All the artists did an amazing job on their vocals and instrumentation.
My favorites are : Selena, Michael McDonald/ James Ingram, Kenny Loggins/Wynonna, Patti Austin, Aretha Franklin,Tevin Campbell and Trisha Yearwood.
This is a great CD for any collection. It's a terrific way to expose your children to real music!

Album Description

The legendary second album (1970) from Funkadelic - remastered from original tapes for the first time in 15 years. This album's title track is the sort of spaced-out acid-funk that is a big influence with artists such as Spiritualized and Primal Scream. This 2005 CD features the original six track album plus the non-album B-side "Fish Chips And Sweat", "Free Your Mind Radio Advert", and the radically different single versions - vocal and instrumental - of "I Wanna Know If It's Good To You". The booklet includes in-depth sleeve notes by funk expert Dean Rudland, with details of the history of the band and this recording, and an interview with eyewitnesses to their 1971 UK tour. The booklet includes lots of pictures, memorabilia and adverts related to this release. Westbound U.S.

5 out of 5 stars Free your mind!.......2007-07-25

I know George and company had to been blowed out of their mind when they recorded this album back in 70. But you still can't take away the fact that it was a very good recording. Not to mention, there was a message in Funkadelic's music even if it did sound somewhat bizarre. George Clinton was quite politically aware of what was going on during that era, which was why a lot of their music along with his other group Parliament was so great. I'm proud to have this title along with all of the others in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars The kingdom of heaven is within..........2007-04-21

This album broke some barriers between rock and soul music that Jimi Hendrix had only begun to break down before his untimely death. No worries, Eddie Hazel was doing similar things on the guitar, though with another approach, and the vision of George Clinton to play through. If you think Neil Young's 'Tonight's the Night' captured a mood of drug/alcohol-addled redemption, you really should listen to this song cycle [song-psycho?]. Clinton nails acid-rock and the band bursts through it, full of raw power, humor, and divinely-inspired re-alignment of the planets. This stuff can be enjoyed in one long monster jam, or song-by-song, and the desired effect is what you'll find when you improve your interplanetary funksmanship. Dig!

5 out of 5 stars Pharmecutical Explanation........2006-10-20

When i first heard this album, i was hypnotized by the funk. Honestly, this album was recorded while the fellas was all high on acid. (That's what George Clinton said). My fav is "Some More" with Bernie rockin' the Hammond B3. It's a bluesy type of song, but oh so funky! The late Eddie Hazel in my opinion was the greatest guitarist (other than the late Jimi Hendricks. If you like rock, and I mean acid rock, cop this peice here. The title cut is also a good song to just listen to ...as a matter of fact, put ur headset on and I guarentee, you will think you're trippin on some stuff! I can't believe how far these guys have come. Tiki Fullwood (Drums)(RIP) Eddie Hazel (Guitar) (Rip), Tawl Ross (Guitar), Bernie Worrell (Keyboards), George Clinton, Calvin Simon, Grady Thomas, Ray Davis. 5 out of 5 stars I Know That It Must Have Been Good To You Baby.......2006-09-15

"cause you're still buying Funkadelic albums! This album was out there!! "Friday Night" is a hard jam as well as "Free Your Mind". this is all rock baby! "I Wanna Know If It's Good" the "Funkadeletts" give you a taste of their sensual yet strong voices--George really knows how how to pic 'em. This album I did not appreciate when i first heard it but, as I grew up I was like wow! This stuff is tight!! The funk is in your face and these musicians really rock a house--The original Funkadelics should be inducted again into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Very excellent work for some very young musicians. The Parliaments are truly doing their thing with the vocals and this album has a lot of energy. Funkadelic set a tone and my hat's off to Bernie Worrell! He rocked those keys like Eddie and Tawl rocked those guitars! There is no other keyboard player like Bernie Worrell in rock music ---probably never will be. These are very innovative people who moved a world--they are still rockin' and funkin' all over the planet.

I love Bad Co. and Paul Rodgers other work, but didn't know much about Free. This great blues!!! I'm surprised Free wasn't bigger that it was. Amazing stuff. A must have if you like Paul Rodgers or Bad Co. Either that or get all the albums. Some of the best blues I've heard.

Really amazed this is out of print in the US. Still available new on Island in Europe.

5 out of 5 stars All the energy and power of THE BLOOZ--.......2006-05-27

Listen, did I hear someone say "lack of energy?"

Get this album, as my lovely wife did for me last Christmas, from Amazon, BTW, and listen to this lineup: Fire & Water, Mr. Big, I'm A Mover, Woman, All Right Now, Oh I Wept, Stealer, Walk in My Shadow... Oh, get up off the floor, amigo... see, it's you that's having a lack of energy... I know, this music is like a workout, emotionally, aurally, and in the old pleasure zone too. Rodgers & the late great Paul Kossoff surely knew how to sell a song, didn't they? Perhaps these fellows were near the best, not only at the time, but in any century of Rock/blues/git-down-kick in-the-mud blooz music. Yowzah!

4 out of 5 stars A cross between Cream and Humble Pie..........2004-10-27

Double CD covering all eight of their albums with an informative booklet from John McDermott. A cross between Cream and Humble Pie this band was a major stepping stone to the commercial success to some of your favorite '70's bands like Foghat, Foreigner and of course Bad Company. They had more talent than any of those bands (with the late Paul Kossoff, Paul Rodgers, Simon Kirke, John Martyn, Rabbit Bundrick, Andy Fraser, and Tetsu Yamauchi) but I think the thing that kept them from being more successful was their lack of energy, "All Right Now" (with perhaps the greatest rock riff ever) and one or two other songs being the exception.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value for the very best of Free.......2004-10-02

The short and troubled history of the band Free is well known, but suffice to say that they probably did not last long enough to really fulfill their potential (this was particularly true of the tragic Paul Kossoff, who died at 25 and could have become one of Britain's most memorable blues guitarists). However, in the band's five years, through six studio albums and one live one, they established an instantly recognizable sound and created some lasting, classic music in a blues-rock vein. This double CD set of remastered recordings includes approximately half the contents of all these albums, and includes the very best known Free album tracks and singles. The sound of the band was, for most of their career, a simple, stripped-down formula of drums, guitar, bass and vocals (all delivered at near-maximum volume), with modest amounts of keyboards; this raw, basic sound does not date and retains the same powerful, visceral appeal now that it did 30 years ago (the only difference being that with the remastering for CD it sounds even louder and more immediate than ever). The passion of the playing and singing pulls the listener into the music - background music it is not! - and despite the rock style, there is a tangible and touching melancholy in some of the songs, for example Kossoff's heartfelt solos on `Heavy load' and `Come together in the morning'. Very welcome additions are two tracks from Kossoff's first solo album, on which he is accompanied by members of Free and also the distinctive guitar sound of John Martyn.

This is undoubtedly the best compilation of Free's studio recordings currently available (there are several too superficial single CD collections, and the box set `Songs of yesterday', though excellent, includes much rare, unreleased material in place of the original versions) and is excellent value. My only slight complaint is that more was not included; there is sufficient room on each CD for several more tracks to have been added, which would have made the collection even better. The album also includes a larger than normal size booklet which includes a brief history of the band and high quality black and white archive photos. An essential album for aficionados of British blues-rock.

If Jimmy Buffet grew up in Detroit it might sound like this!! Sounds like Ray is sitting on a tropical island somewhere thinking about life! He wonderfully blends his pop/r&b melodies with some blues, smooth jazz, and even reggae on this CD.! Ive always wanted to make a record with no restrictions on my creativity. One that would allow me to play my nylon, acoustic, and electric guitars. One that would allow me to lyrically express what life holds for me and my friends at this moment in time. Im Free represents a lot more than just a song or project title. For the first time in a long time, I feel Im Free to express myself the way I used to when I first started! After raising my arms, shouting it out loud a few times and looking at my happy face in the mirror, I knew I was ready!

4 out of 5 stars Ray Parker Jr. beyond "Ghostbusters".......2007-04-06

Most people know Ray Parker Jr as the guy who did the theme from the fright comedy "Ghostbusters", but this album puts him in a much different light. First off, his instrumental "Mismaloya Beach" is a breezy jazz guitar tune that suits him well in the smooth jazz realm. His vocalized tunes put his views on life and love in a more realistic vibe. It is different from anything Ray ever did before. Parker is in the smooth jazz realm to stay, so don't expect him to be chasing anymore ghosts.

5 out of 5 stars Tropical Raydio!.......2007-03-07

Detroit native Ray Parker Jr. seldom charted since 1985 and now with this album,he performs in a whole new tropical-themed style. I recently heard one of the tracks [...] and it was awesome! Parker put out this album in 2006,a quarter-century after he disbanded Raydio(he later continued his career as a solo artist). However,he reunites, musically, with his longtime buddy Ollie Brown, who was one of Parker's Raydio fellow members. Parker and Brown have been friends since grade school and they're both also reunited with some other childhood friends on this project. Parker, who has written almost every song he recorded, with or without Raydio, does a wonderful cover of David Gates' GUITAR MAN,which was a hit in 1972 for Gates' now-extinct band Bread. I guess we can say that, with the exception of Brown,he and Parker have a new "Raydio". The other songs are fantastic! I would love to sit by my pool while listening to this CD!

3 out of 5 stars Below expectations.......2007-01-28

I have to admit that I really like Ray Parker Jr. He's one of those session musicians that certainly delivers top performance given the circunstances. Ray Parker Jr caught my attention besides his heydays with Raydio when he recorded "After Dark", his last work before this new release. He proved himself to be one of the pioneers in what nowadays we come to know as "smooth jazz". The song "After Midnite" is a true classic of this genre and that particular album unfortunately remains unavailable in cd (a few vynil copies can be found in here). Said all this, I was wondering why he wouldn't release a newer and polished smooth jazz album. When I knew he would have a new album I was very enthusiastic about it. Well, "I'm free" falls below my expectations because Ray decided to do something to express his freedom feelings (which there's nothing wrong with it) instead of doing what he does best: fine smooth jazz. The only song cut to that standard is "Mismaloya Beach" which is by far the only one I really enjoy. The rest is a mix that ranges from a Marc Antoine-esque song to a weak cover of David Gate's "The Guitar Man" with bland vocals in between. Don't get me wrong, I still believe he's an outstanding musician and probably this cd is for the fan at heart of Ray Parker Jr, but not for me. I'll look forward for a genuine smooth jazz album. Without a trace of a doubt I'm pretty sure he'll come up with something like that in the near future.

4 out of 5 stars I'M FREE.......2006-11-10

I THINK WE FORGET WHAT A GOOD GUITAR PLAYER RAY PARKER JR IS..THIS NEW CD REMIND US THAT HE WAS A MUSICAN BEFORE "GHOST BUSTER" AND RADIO... I DONT LIKE THE SINGING ON THE CD BUT I LOVE THE INSTRUMENTALS..

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic!.......2006-09-07

I couldn't wait to get this album. I'm a "young, old head" and I've loved Ray's music every since I was a toddler when my parents used to play his 45's. I saw him perform a couple of weeks ago in DC and it was such a blessing to be able to see one of my favorite musicians... and I even got a hug! The album is great from beginning to end. It takes you to another place and he makes his guitars sing. I highly recommend this album to anyone. The CD didn't have to grow on me... when I heard the CD the first time through, I loved every single song. If you want to hear some REAL music, show Ray some love and buy this album... it's the best album of the year, so far, for me.

Although introduced as a protégé of John Coltrane and touted by many as his heir apparent, reedman Pharoah Sanders quickly proved his own man. His shared interest in the "cosmic" music of Coltrane's final period belies the fact that Sanders frequently plays with an unhurried sense of peace and satisfaction rarely found in his mentor's music. His use of space, African and Asian motifs and instruments, and simple, repetitive melodies also pointed the way for jazz, rock, and new age musicians in the '70s and '80s, while his sometimes raucous use of harsh, shrieking runs influenced many of jazz's most adventurous saxophonists.

The centerpiece of Karma is the marathon half-hour octet recording "The Creator Has a Master Plan." Although the track features a warm vocal by Leon Thomas, its true feature artist for almost the entire length is Sanders, who carries the melody, feel, and improvisation firmly on his shoulders. All of Sanders's key elements--Afro-centric spiritualism, sweeping use of mood from long, relaxed intervals to frenetic cacophony, and a deep sense of melody and rhythm--are in evidence. The album's religious feeling is cemented by the album's closer, "Colors," which serves as a deeply felt invocation. --Fred Goodman

5 out of 5 stars Long song worth the over half an hour.......2006-09-11

I agree with almost everything said in the other 5 star reviews, so I will not repeat it. There is one thing that I think needs to be stressed further, and that is that even though the first peice is very long, it does pay off to listen to it all the way through. At the end, you'll exclaim, wow, that was amazing, i can't wait to listen to it again. So my advice to you is, start listening!

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece........2005-08-06

Pharoah Sanders' 1969 album, "Karma", is generally (and rightfully) acknowledged as one of the masterpieces in the free jazz movement of the '60s. The majority of the album is absorbed by the lengthy "The Creator Has a Masterplan", with a brief second piece, "Colors" also on the record. "The Creator Has a Masterplan" has worked its way into jazz consciounsess, becoming a standard of sorts performed by everyone from Louis Armstrong to Don Cherry to Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Composed by Sanders and vocalist Leon Thomas, it receives on this album a sprawling treatement (extending nearly 33 minutes) that is something to be heard.

Beginning with a swelling theme by Sanders (on tenor exclusively), with a nimble rhythm section including Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Richard Davis and Reggie Workman on bass, William Hart on drums, and Nataniel Bettis and Thomas contributing percussion, Sanders evokes a mood-- mysterious, spiritual and haunting in his blistering playing with falutist James Spaulding and french hornist Julius Watkins countering him ably. After a couple minutes, the piece bleeds into a relaxed tempo with one bassist plucking the familiar bass theme and one by one instruments joining-- swiping piano, flute doubling the main theme, and Sanders at his most lyrical and emotional until finally Thomas intones the chorus to the piece (oddly enough, the verses are not included in this recording).

What follows is the beginning of an explosive improv-- Thomas in his odd yodelling style, Sanders ferocious on tenor, and Smith at the piano all take turns, with the rest supporting-- increases in tempos signal increases in the power of the improv and the preceedings rise and fall repeatedly-- the opening theme is reprised, the main theme is reprised, and it builds one last time until Sanders doubles the main bass line towards the end (about 28 minutes in) and plays one of his loveliest and most powerful solos to bring the piece to its conclusion.

When it's done, "Colors" almost seems like a waste of time-- a reasonable song with some nice playing and a pretty goofy lyric about the colors of nature, its altogether a fairly pointless piece, inoffensive, but not terribly inspired after 'Creator'.

The CD reissue includes lyrics for both pieces (including the unsung verses of 'Creator') but sadly no essay in the liner notes. Sonically, the remastering on this recording is superb and it sounds crisp and clear.

Interested parties after hearing this should dig up Leon Thomas's "Spirits Known and Unknown", he performs "The Creator Has a Masterplan" (among other cuts) in a briefer version with its full lyrics intact and an ensemble that includes several of the players here. Both recordings are highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, Awe-inspiring & Utterly unique.............2005-04-12

Although a protege of "John Coltrane", Pharoah Sanders, unquestionably remains one of the most distinctive tenor saxophonist's of his generation, Pharoah's style of passionate, Exuberant jazz is Harmonically rich and heavy in sound & tone, and although his music is largely considered to be expressionistic, spiritual free jazz, into a ultra-dense flurry of sound that relied heavily on the non-specific pitches and timbral distortions. (although his later music would inhibit a sense of gentler tones and more cerebral tones, without sacrificing any of the intensity that he was known for).

His 1969 landmark album "Karma", was his third album as band leader, and was probably not only his most distinctive album, but also the album that truly encapsulated his considerable talents onto one studio recording. If you've ever heard people refer to music as 'Spiritual', this arguably could be a form/level of music that is, in parts, impeccably performed & arranged performances largely due to the stunning line-up: (Reggie Workman - Bass, Pharoah Sanders - Sax (Tenor), Freddie Waits / Billy Hart - Drums, Nat Bettis - Percussion, Ron Carter/ Richard Davis - Bass, Lonnie Liston Smith - Piano, James Spaulding - Flute, Leon Thomas - Percussion /Vocals, Julius Watkins - French Horn).

The album is broken down into two tracks (??), the main meat of the album, is the first track "Creator has a Master Plan", which runs at a staggering 32 minutes. Most musicians would struggle to fill even half of that running time with a track that'll retain the listeners attention, but such is the confidence and creative ability of the musicians involved here, that Pharoah and his band easily creative a completely jaw-dropping track, that is the musical equivalent of a huge multi-threaded story, in which sounds, arrangements, solo performances and deep commitment to a constantly evolving sound, all work alongside each other fleshing out the sound, producing something incredibly organic, and spiritually freewheeling at the same time. Think of this as cosmic music, with a heavy influence of time & space augmenting the sound, with African and Indian instruments adding extra substance to the track. The Flute features heavily throughout the track, softening the edges of between the introduction of Drums & Percussion. With simple music repetition giving way that gradual shifts in sound & mood.

The music is heavily textured throughout the track, with the occasional vocal, "The creator has a master plan--peace and happiness for every man.", repeated throughout certain keypoints of the track, although Pharoah's contribution here really shouldn't be underestimated, he frequently features, for almost the entire length of the track carrying melody wherever appropriate, and empowering the music with a Avant-Garde / Free Jazz feel, with a lot of the improvisation firmly on his shoulders. The mood and gradual musical exploration of the track is partly due to his stunning direction, and all of Sander's key elements are fully utilised here. Be it, the Afro-centric spiritualism, sweeping use of mood from long, relaxed intervals to frenetic cacophony, and a deep sense of melody and rhythm. Its far beyond conventional jazz structures and the composition is amongst the most adventurous & organically created / improvised tracks created.

The second track "Colors" which runs at a mere 5 1/2 minutes, was always going to struggle in comparison to the centre piece track, but its inclusion is no less diminished. Sure, as a track, it can't hope to compete with the magnificent undertaking that is the "Creator has a masterplan", but it is a piece recognising the divinity and harmony of life through the simplest of messages. And the tracks religious feeling is cemented by the fact that it feels deeply engaging, and a sound that through Pharoah's dynamics and leadership pushes irrepressibly forward, with Sanders shifting between spiritual peace and violent outbursts in his tenor solos.

If you are prepared to give Pharoah's music a try, then other than possibly buying a 'Best of / Compilation', this is largely considered to be the best of his studio album output. But be warned if you haven't sampled his work before, this isn't Jazz music in the conventional sense, and if the idea of very open-ended music that gradually unfolds over long arrangements doesn't appeal to you, its advisable that you download or hear a track first before you purchase this. Or even if you're relatively new to Jazz, hearing this first before buying, is most definitely advisable, as it's a little bit like being thrown in the deep end of a musical genre. But if you are well adversed with the many facets of Jazz music, or your feeling particularly adventurous (& Patient), this has to be easily amongst some of the most awe-inspiring jazz out there.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2004-09-18

This album is brilliant. Only two tracks, the first, called "The Creator Has a Master Plan" lasting over 30 minutes, Karma is awesome. Slowly building, "The Creator Has a Master Plan" gets grooving almost 9 minutes into it and features a repetition of "The creator has a master plan, peace and happiness for every man." This is really one of those albums that I plan on listening to over and over.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars is not enough!.......2004-07-22

4 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I EXPECTED.......2007-03-15

This is a very good cd. I bought this cd after hearing the single, "Get away". I didn't think it would be so spirtually inclined but that wasn't a negative. Ms. LaShell has a beautiful voice and her songs are positive and uplifting.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational ! It's a blessing........2007-03-08

I really enjoyed this CD. I bought it specifically for the version of "I can only imagine" It is great! This song has been recorded numerous times in all kinds of music styles and languages. This is my favorite to date (and I have listed to quite a few). Man from Galilee is touching too. And Rise is inspirational, uplifting and full of hope and faith. LaShell has a beautiful voice and this CD is really a blessing.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Star Struck!.......2006-04-18

Lashell has that BIG voice that you naturally look to hear from a singer. This album is so inspirational but not overly gospel. It leads you into the message without overwhelming you. I am trully impressed by her vocal style, range and power and her apparent humbleness. Props to Oprah and the audience for recognizing her gifts and much success to Lashell. All the tracks are my favorites but Free rings in my head most anytime of the day.

This CD is a diamond in the rough. It seems to be an injustice
that Lashell Griffin is getting little or no air time on the
radio for this CD.Every song on this CD with the exception of
cut ten is a four or five star song.with other CD's you are fortunate if 7 out of 10 are good songs. There has to be a marketing problem with her marketing agency. How can you sing
on Oprah and not be heard on the Gospel stations? This is an
annointed CD and it's unfortunate that many are missing out on
it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful.......2004-11-12

I ordered this as an extra just to complete an order. Now, I can't stop listening to it. LaShell, thank you for sharing your blessed voice with the rest of us. I love every last song on this CD. My favorite songs are Get Away (I have 2 small ones), I Can Only Imagine (my heart pounds with this song), He's Coming Again (I hold my breath, too). I love them all, REALLY. Please do another CD, although I'm sure I'll still be listening to this one even when the 2nd one comes.
