Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Two of the soul great's albums paired together, 1971's top 30 'Curtis/ Live!' and 1973's 'Curtis In Chicago'. The latter title is the soundtrack to the special musical show that Chicago TV station WTTW aired in 1973 & it features live performances by Mayfield with members of various line-ups of his previous group, The Impressions, plus Jerry Butler, Gene Chandler & others. It includes the hit single 'If I Were Only A Child Again' and the Impressions rendition of 'Amen'. Both albums were first released on Mayfield's Curtom label. A combined total of 22 tracks. Also features the original cover art of each. Double slimline jewel case. 1999 release.

Magic......Pure aural pleasure!.......2007-03-05
From the moment I put on this recording, I was captivated. Six minutes into 'Memphis Soul Stew' listners are treated to an explosion of sound that wraps up in it the genres of soul, rock, jazz, and most likely some unearthly sound millions of light years away. From beginning to end, King Curtis and the incredible musicians brought together on this recording groove and interact in a manner that few bands achieve. If you own three live recordings in your life, this should be .333333.
The Tops.......2006-12-22
As in the very best. King Curtis and everyone here cooks up the finest Memphis Soul Stew. Whiter Shade of Pale is lovely. Everything surges with a funky pull. Billy Preston shines on organ, but the others rise to the occasion too. If you like soul, get this, you'll love it.
The Original 'Kingpin' of Southern Soul.......2006-07-29
Six months after this recording was made, `King' Curtis Ousley would be stabbed to death while standing in front of his New York City apartment building. This tragic violence brought a premature close to a career that had recently projected to new heights, and seemed poised to go just about anywhere. Active since the early fifties, King Curtis moved easily from jazz to soul to rock and roll. To put things in perspective, you should know that when Sam Cooke sings "Play that one called `Soul Twist'" in "Having a Party," he's referring to a King Curtis tune. The man was ubiquitous, but usually stayed behind the scenes, serving as a bandleader, producer or back-up musician for an endless number of performers, including the Coasters, the Isley Brothers, Bobby Darin and John Lennon. In 1971, he was acting as bandleader for Aretha Franklin (see my review for "Aretha Franklin Live at the Fillmore West") and racking up a few hits of his own. "King Curtis Live at the Fillmore West" culls the highlights from his own sets at this venue, and it also marks a high point of his recording career.
The band alone justifies the price of admission. Billy Preston plays keyboards and Cornell Dupree plays guitar, while Jerry Jemmott and Bernard Purdie make up the rhythm section. Fattening out the rich sound of Curtis' own baritone saxophone are the Memphis Horns, making this ensemble a dream team of funky soul-music brethren. Even when the material is lacking, the band manages to transcend mundanity with spirited interpretations. Would you expect "Ode to Billie Joe" to have a fatback groove? I wouldn't have. Could you even imagine a baritone sax handling Robert Plant's vocal line for "Whole Lotta Love"? I didn't think so. This version in particular brings the song full circle, taking it closer to its roots as a Willie Dixon composition. The best tune here, though, is "Memphis Soul Stew," a gorgeous eight-minute rhythmic workout that virtually defines the funky/loose and yet stop-on-a-dime/tight spirit of contemporary soul music. It is a virtual primer in everything anyone would need to know about cooking up a hot rhythm and letting it simmer until it boils over with intense energy. Throw in a bonus track that features Billy Preston molding "My Sweet Lord" into something uniquely his own, and you will have to wonder how on Earth anybody could claim George Harrison's composition as a derivative of "He's So Fine."
King Curtis had a lengthy career, but it still ended much too soon. Catch this set and you're also bound to wonder how soul music would have progressed had we not lost such a talented force at the peak of his powers. A- Tom Ryan

certainly the greatest live soul recording ever..........2007-05-20
Another reviewer wrote that they think this is one of the best live albums ever, and I would be inclined to agree. This is Curtis at the top of his game- the songs, the band, everything is in place on this recording- the venue is intimate and the crowd is pumped, reponding positively to Curtis' politically-charged lyrics and pushing him deeper into the music. The Impressions songs are updated to a sleek, funky sound and the 70's material is delivered in a righteous, soulful style. This album is the bomb.
Saltine Like Me (Whitey's Review).......2005-12-04
'Curtis Live' is often heralded as one of the finest live performances ever recorded. I think that's a bit of a streatch, even though it is a fine disc, and even allowing for my Cracker roots. I do believe Curtis had the capacity to produce an elite disc, but the track selection would certainly have to include some of his choice compositions which are omitted here, such as 'Keep On Pushin' and 'I'm So Proud'. There is ample room in the setlist for these gems, considering the inclusion of numbers such as 'Stare and Stare' and 'The Makings of You'. Nevertheless, I thank Rhino Records and Curtis and Crew for taking me back on a nostalgic trip to Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan in the early 1970's, where the black student union held beer bashes in the Student Center every other Friday (I was in the first high school class allowed to drink at age 18), and always supplied a Curtis Mayfield or Funkadelic sound-alike band for our impaired enjoyment.
I prefer the stipped down band Curtis brought to The Bitter End in New York's Greenwich Village in January of 1971. Sans strings and horns, it's easy to groove to Curtis' funky wah-pedal rhythm guitar, and Henry Gibson's (NOT the "verrrrrryyyy interesssting..." Henry Gibson from 'Laugh-In') wonderfully understated percussion sounds throughout the concert. Joseph 'Lucky' Scott doesn't turn up the volume on his bass until Curtis kicks into the Constitutional sounding 'We the People..." on track 14, but when he does it cranks the concert into high gear. Aside from 'Check Out Your Mind' and 'Gypsy Woman', the previous tracks really wouldn't benefit from a thundering bass anyway. The excellent trio of 'We're a Winner' (with its sweet aside of, "Lordy, mercy, we're movin' on up"), the unlikely but thoroughly perfect 'We've Only Just Begun' (Curtis can almost make you forget Karen Carpenter's smooth delivery with his own silken strains), and the evangelizing 'People Get Ready' benefit most from subdued support for Mayfield's soulful vocals.
Lacking the black consciousness and experience with the ghetto and serious drug abuse, I have trouble identifying with some of the tracks, and much of it just seems way too dependent upon racial awareness for a white guy. At times, especially on the more laid back tracks such as 'People Get Ready', there is a bit too much crowd noise generated in the intimate confines of this club-like atmosphere. Unlike many white concertgoers, however, at least our black brothers and sisters know when to kick in with a "That's right", or "Tell It" from the front row.
My favorite track on the disc is '(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Gonna Go', with Curtis delivering the chorus in a manner all but screaming RAP MUSIC! Scott's prominent bass lines are now joined by some slick lead guitar by Craig McCullen as the concert hits a peak. Rhino wisely added the bonus track 'Superfly' from a 1973 performance in Chicago, this time with a horn section present. This last track was recorded by radio station WTTW and sounds distant in contrast to the intimate feel one gets from The Bitter End recordings.
The 2000 Rhino remastered reissue of this recording comes nicely packaged with extensive liner notes detailing Mayfield's career, dating back to the 1950's, and culminating with his passing in 1999. Despite listing the tracks three times, however, Rhino fails to offer the running times, something many CD producers have apparently decided is superfluous information. Another curious aspect of the disc is assigning Curtis' between song monologues with the audience 'track status'. This disc really only contains 13 seperate songs (the second bonus track is simply the edited version of track one which was released as a single for AM radio), but it's listed as 18 tracks. The term 'rap' of course meant 'to discuss openly' in the 1970's, but Rhino's treatment of these asides makes one at least expect some Muhammad Ali-like rhythmic rhyming. Not. Nevertheless, a choice disc from a choice artist, even for Saltines like me.
Lacking.......2005-10-13
ONLY(guitars, congas, bass, drums. PERIOD)It would be a fantastic CD if the band would've had some horns..e.g. there are no saxaphones or trumpets..The REAL Curtis Mayfield fan will recognize this because Mayfield is not only NOTED for his LYRICS, but for Particular MUSIC SOUND..I'm still a huge MAYFIELD fan, but was disappointed on this one.
He's A Winner!.......2005-01-25
If there's a better live album out there I'm not familiar with it. While Live at Leeds, How the West was Won, and probably a lot of Phish shows compare, for my money I'll take Curtis. Forget about his stellar songwriting and singing, his rhythym section on this album bests anything I've heard from Bonzo and Jonsey, Fishman and Gordon or Enwistle and Moon, who are all some pretty bad motherfunkers if you didn't already know. From the opening notes of "Mighty Mighty" through the last ones of "Stone Junkie" we are treated to funky baselines, killer congas, Curtis' often imitated but never duplicated guitar style and best of all his inspirational voice- it really does get no better. One of the few cd's I always listen to front to back, there's no need to skip songs. My favorite songs are "gypsy woman", "mighty mighty", "we're a winner", and "don't worry", the live versions here even better than the originals. Even though the album is the second set from a 1971 show in NYC it plays like Curtis' greatist hits live. That's a testament to his extremely consistent library.
Curtis/Live is one of the best albums I've heard.......2004-10-14
Curtis Mayfield is a legend, if you didn't know that you probably wouldn't be interested in this album. His career featured many highlights; this is only one of them.
The music quality on here is pure genius. Mayfield covers a variety of topics, certainly never shying away from the current state of politics during this time. He also dives into some of his hits with the Impressions, giving a new light on these songs with the live performance.
What really makes Curtis/Live! Worth owning for fans and new comers is how well it comes off as a live album. The recording is crystal clear, from every drum and guitar to Mayfield's vocals. In addition, there's just enough audience noise to give you the live feel without becoming overwhelming. The audience itself only adds to the music played, as they chant along the chorus with Mayfield in "Stone Junky" as well as their emphatic responses to Curtis's preaching.
The album is also structured so that the interludes are separated as tracks (noted as Rap) allowing the listener to skip directly to the music while not taking away the concert feel from a full listen.
The Deluxe version also includes two tracks not recorded with the original set "Superfly" (live) which sounds like it was performed in a concert hall as apposed to the rest of the album & the single version for "Mighty Mighty." Although both of these tracks are really unnecessary they certainly do not take away from the original album.
This is defiantly one of the best live recordings I've ever heard and certainly is on the top of all soul live recordings I've herd along with Sam Cooke's "Live at the Harlem Square Club". While Cooke's live performance made you feel like he was in a party amongst the crowd, Curtis/Live will take you to the front row of a small club in New York City, where you hear a legend jam out to some of the most prolific music recorded.

Is music for a good cause a good cause for music? Not really, if you expect artistry. But this smorgasbord of popular international musical stars brings together extreme musical genres for an excellent purpose, and is enjoyable enough for almost anyone. Pavarotti's relaxed and buoyant leadership and still gorgeous tenor add beauty to the rock/pop selections. Trisha Yearwood, Celine Dion, and Stevie Wonder impressively hold their own against Opera Spice; but the other artists pale against the master's presence. The Spice Girls will never be confused with Anonymous 4; Zucchero's growling is scary; Florent Pagny exemplifies French rock; and Pino Daniele's breathy tenor is mellow and soothing. Best for those wanting to experience Pavarotti's vocal beauty in a more popular idiom. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
A Superb Collection of Music.......2002-11-14
As a musician, I first ran into this disk as a PBS broadcast. What caught my ear was that every song in the concert has "the groove." Other than a children's choral cut, not a single song in the entire collection has a flaw. You'd think the Spice Girls would be a silly addition to the concert, but they do a tremendous job. Each artist appears twice, usually with Pavaotti in one of their songs, sometimes twice. Vanessa Williams is Hot! and does an incredible dance number. The engineering is excellent, with solid side-to-side separation for a really "big" sound. All in all, this is one of the favorite CDs in my music library.
This is a delightful combination of music talents to enjoy!.......1999-04-01
We first saw Pavarotti and Friends on Public Television as a fundraising event. We found the CD and especially love to listen to this CD in our car which has a great sound system. Each vocalist is so special and you will be singing along with them after a couple of plays!
This will tenderize your heart........1999-03-07
Brilliant talent for needy children, that touches the soul, and sets it on fire. Your tears will soak your socks. James
Phenomenal !! A must have for any music library........1998-12-29
A most wonderful gathering of some of the world's greatest vocalists. Such a unique blend of international Modern & Classical. If one were to put to test the ability of a vocalist to adapt to a variety of melodies, this is it. Grab your lover and take a trip in their arms with this CD!!
Outstanding Music, bringing Pavarotti to new heights........1998-12-06
Easily the best in the Pavarotti & Friends series. Always an artist on the cutting edge, with this album, Pavarotti's work will have great appeal to his fans and to scores of new enthusiasts. His duets with the Spice Girls, Vanessa Williams, Zucchero, and Stevie Wonder make it obvious that his voice has adaptability and a passion that takes it into many musical genres with ease. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. Sting once commented that great music occurs in the "synaptic gaps" where many different styles come together - this is an album that epitomizes the concept. Neopolitan music is a folk music in Italy, with overtones of American folk/country/jazz/rock, and Pavarotti is the Neopolitan master. This is a perfect fit of artists and selected titles. Earlier combinations of artists in this series were often much too somber, much less fun. Give this one to your teens or your great grandmother ... they'll find they have more musical tastes in common than they'd have ever imagined.

too early in his career for a live album.......2004-10-21
Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to like about this album. I've maintained for years that studio albums do not do justice to what SCC can really do. He tends to really open up and shine when he performs live. That's probably what prompted this release.
Looking back, though, this was much too early in his career to put out a live album. Since it was released so early, it only scratches the surface of the depth of his live music. Still, it shows us his heart, especially in his interaction with the audience. We begin to see the man behind the songs and capture his energy and passion. I'm definitely looking forward to his next live release!

Great CD...buy yourself one.......2004-06-02
I got this CD a long time ago (11 years), when it came out. The concert was awesome. Anyway, you should get your own copy, and not download it illegally off the internet. It's worth it. I've been a constant fan of Steven Curtis Chapman, and will continue to. Family talk is hilarious, and shows the honesty (or lack of) of childhood. My favorite song is Busy Man...you should have seen it...ah the styles of the 90s. Haha. Get this CD...get it now. CDnow.
Great vocalist!.......2002-11-02
Steven Curtis Chapman sings wonderfully! On this live CD, it sounds as if he were singin in a studio! True talent that's God-given!
My ultimate favorite song on the CD is "For the Sake of the Call." You truly feel the soul in this song.
He is a very versatile artist. His journey through the music biz is a treat on this live album.

His live version of "No Better Place" is not to be missed. Same goes for Family Talk, this man is a laugh a second! His comments about his kids in that trak should be the standard for all comedians. I am especially honored that he came up here to Seattle for this lovely bit of entertainment. Wish I could have been there. Notice how the audience's enthusiasm for the sing-alongs slowly wanes as time goes on? Poor Steve....My only complaints are a) he didn't do "In This Little Room", and b) he only did part of "When You Are a Soldier". Other than that, this is da bomb! Die-hard SCC fans (like myself), especially, will find this a real treat. Two thumbs up.
5 stars in 1993, 4 stars in 1999.......1999-11-11
When this came out over 5 years ago, this was a great live album showcasing where Steven was at that point. The amazing thing is he has become so much more of an artist since then. A newer and better compilation, "Greatest Hits" which came out in 1997 includes two Abbey Road versions of material from "Signs of Life" ("The Walk" and "Lord of the Dance") as well as two great new songs ("Not Home Yet" and "I am Found in You"). The parts in this live album where Steven talks are very personal and touching, and the overall energy in the album is tremendous. However, the "sound" is really not as crisp and clean as his usual studio efforts, which loses something especially for all the guitar work. All of the really great tracks on this album are on "Greatest Hits" which I believe is a much better introduction to his music.

A fantastic session.......2006-07-10
This is one of those albums and artists that is constantly shuffled away and almost forgotten. King Curtis was one of the great sidemen of R&B, and this cd will testify to it. The selection of tunes was obviously geared for the Filmore crowd. I still think his version of "Whiter Shade of Pale" one of the finest covers ever. The sax technique on it obviously reveals his earlier career as a "serious" jazz man (if you can find it, check out those early jazz lps). Check out this "back up" and warm up act/band with Curtis with an appearance by the late Billy Preston and others. Mighty fine music here.
there are better purchases.......2005-08-02
Check out the king/aretha disc set instead. Better sound quality for what I imagine are the same shows. Otherwise stick to some of his studio work. Playing this in multiple cars it just sounds muddy where the aretha set (4 cds) has much better if not fantastic sound.

This is the master that Dave Sanborn stole from.......2004-06-21
This is one of the best albums I own out of 2000+ records. The magic is there! This album should be studied in every music school for feel, groove, communication w/ listeners and musicality. If you play sax, keys, bass, conga, drums, guitar, trumpet, organ...this is a MUST CD.
I thought this album was lost as I hadn't seen it anywhere for 20+ yrs. The only thing I ever saw, which made me mad as hell, was one night back in the 80's Dave Sanborn was on Late Night w/ Letterman and introduced a copy of the first cut of this album as "his song HE wrote" as "Love stew" or something like that...Never saying that the whole arrangment and even most all of Daves solo was just a copy of Memphis Soul Stew. Another case of the white man stealing the blackman's ideas...and making a ton of money off it!

Driven by equal amounts marketing savvy and American pride, the rousing efforts of these three young winners of a national talent search were introduced to the world via a well-received PBS television special. Its companion CD release variously showcases the young voices of Nathan Granner, Daniel Montenegro, and Mauricio O'Reilly (and has there ever been a more quintessentially American name than Mauricio O'Reilly?) in solo turns and bracing harmony, meets the challenge of its more renowned Neopolitan elder statesman with aplomb and offers up a concise argument for the nation's own neo-operatic vocal traditions. While many of the Broadway standards and hoary traditionals break little ground, the trio's energized "West Side Story" medley argues that Broadway can offer up music as bracing as La Scala. Their takes on "Torna a Surriento," "Granada," the medley "O Sole Mio"/"It's Now or Never," and "Funiculi, Funicula" range from savory to playful, offering both a tip of the hat to that other trio and a welcome reminder of how these Italian and Latin rooted songs have become an essential ingredient of America's musical melting pot. --Jerry McCulley

Nathan Granner Fan.......2006-08-04
No offense to the other two great singers on this album, but I'd like to talk about my best friend Nathan who is one of "The American Tenors" and continues to tour and promote this show.
I remember the buzz in the air when they filmed this at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles and the place was standing room only. Critics who were there loved it. Just a few weeks after recording the dvd SONY CLASSICAL (their label) was getting huge marketing projects under way to make "The American Tenors" popular in the States. Unfortunately, all the gigs that were lined up-Jay Leno, The Today Show, and many others got scrapped because the US went to war with Iraq - literally THAT week. Ouch.
That was really too bad because there were some great songs here. The show was buried before it even got a chance because of the war. You might argue that it was buried because the singers were "no names", but let me tell you something, that's crap. There are some songs here that are REALLY GREAT, and the musical arrangments are extraordinary. Nathan's version of "If I Loved YOU" is the best recording of that song you will ever find. I challenge you to find one better.
Whether it be singing on stage at Carnegie Hall, performing on an aircraft carrier in New York Harbor, opening NASDAQ, or a Kareoke Bar in Kansas City, Nathan is a star. He may not be the guy in the headlines today in America, but he has fans in the thousands, and has enormous talent and he can sing any song...ANY SONG and make it sound amazing.
Do yourself a favor and spend the [..] to get this DVD. Or better yet, the [..] for a new copy. Then go visit Nathan Granner's website and find out what he's up to next. If you are lucky someday you may get to hear him sing in person, and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
Chubby tenors.......2006-02-23
Chubby American Tenors. Nothing exceptional in the album, but a certain standart does exist -as is the case with most American products.
The album is little above mediocre when compared to its counterparts (IL DIVO, Mario Frangoulis, Celtic Tenors, etc.)
Worth listening to, but look for it in the library or used.......2005-07-07
OK, I know, these are young, up and coming singers. It's probably not fair to compare them to the likes of Domingo, Pavarotti, etc. yet. But, If you are a fan of "The Three Tenors", and you get this CD expecting a similar listening experience, you will probably be disappointed. The American Tenors are all talented, Nathan Granner particularly so, but they are not yet on the same level as *The* Three Tenors. Of course, they are also probably a few of decades younger; it will be interesting to hear them after they have gained some experience.
Still, even allowing for the singers' relative inexperience, the main reason I didn't rate the CD higher is that it suffers seriously from over-orchestration. Often the instruments were way too loud - sometimes overpowering all but the most powerful of the three voices and forcing me lower the overall volume. At first I thought I was just being picky until I listened to some tracks from "The Three Tenors" again. The difference is obvious; understated, balanced orchestration supports the performers and lets the voices shine through.
Good Overall.......2005-06-21
I enjoyed the presentation, and I enjoyed Natan Granner the most. He has a strong clear voice that deals with this material well. Daniel Montenegro is also strong, but Mauricio O'Reilly's voice comes across as thin and not very powerful. He would do better with softer, more intimate songs, with fewer instruments as accompanyment.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this DVD and would recommend it.
money better spent.......2004-05-12
I really applaud Frank McNamara for attempting this, since I think he is one of our best composers/conductors. However, if you want to spend your hard earned cash, I would use it on the Frank's former colleagues, the Irish Tenors. In particular, I think Anthony Kearns has emerged as possibly the finest tenor voice in the world today. As a big fan of American Musical theater as well as a regular at the opera, I think he could emerge as a superstar.
Time (and his interests) will tell.

Great Music...Need I say more?.......1999-09-16
It is wonderful and just very good; quality music at it's best
one of the best CDs I own.......1999-03-20
I love this CD. I can listen to it in any mood because it is the perfect mix of upbeat and soft, sad songs. "The Christians and the Pagans" offers an unusual, much-needed social message, but none of the songs are preachy; some stand out less than others, but there are no poorly sung songs on this album. "I Always Told You the Truth" and "75 Septembers" are two of the best; my favorite song is "Solitary Hero." This CD is a definite must-buy.
