Amazon.com essential recording
In the mid-'60s, a distinctive postbop style evolved among the younger musicians associated with Blue Note, a new synthesis that managed to blend the cool spaciousness of Miles Davis's modal period, some of the fire of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and touches of the avant-garde's group interaction. Maiden Voyage is a masterpiece of the school, with Hancock's enduring compositions like "Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" mingling creative tension and calm repose with strong melodies and airy, suspended harmonies that give form to his evocative sea imagery. Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard was at a creative peak, stretching his extraordinary technique to the limits in search of a Coltrane-like fluency on the heated "Eye of the Storm," while the underrated tenor saxophonist George Coleman adds a developed lyricism to the session. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Great jazz album.......2007-07-11
Great jazz album from the '60s. This one belongs high up in the pantheon of jazz albums that include Miles Davis's Kind of Blue, John Coltrane's Blue Train, and Speak No Evil by Wayne Shorter. If you feel that these other albums are essiential jazz listening, then you will certainly enjoy 'Maiden Voyage' by Herbie Hancock, and you will see why people still rave about this album today.
If you are an experienced jazz fan then you will most definately already have an opinion on this album, but if you are just getting into jazz then this album should certainly be on your 'to buy' list. Firm five stars from me!
Good, but Empyrean Isles is so much better..........2007-05-26
What we have here is an album that fails to live up to the standards that the first two and last tracks set. I'd rather hear Miles Davis' version of Little One found on E.S.P. - this one just plods along for a seeming eternity. So does Survival of the Fittest. Both okay songs - neither of them are bad, that's for sure - but they could've seen to be shorter. That's why I don't see Maiden Voyage as being on the same level of Empyrean Isles. It's just not.
Now for the good news. The three well-known pieces on this album make it worth the buy. The title track is the token easygoing blues groover (i.e. Watermelon Man and Canteloupe Island) with a simple theme that's hard to get out of your head nonetheless. Next up is the frenetic Eye of the Hurricane, which provides a perfect contrast. Third and final is the quiet ballad Dolphin Dance, a gorgeous thing that rules as much as the other two I mentioned. And that Hancock covers such a wide range of emotions on this record is another point towards it.
So I like this album, and like many others this was my first exposure to Herbie Hancock. But he's put out at least one better record, arguably two (Headhunters also makes the list).
Fantastic Voyage would be closer to the truth.........2006-11-06
I feel the salty smell of the sea when I listen to this album.
My family and myself heard an interpretation of the title
track in a cafe, in a small town on the "Pacific Coast Frontier".
The wave of the melody swept over me like the evening fog.
Absolutely amazing..
Review is simple GET IT!!.......2006-09-06
Why go to a lot of trouble to discuss in depth one of the greatest jazz albums ever crafted?
Well, let me just say:
If you consider yourself a Jazz Fan. . .then you NEED this album.
It is not the ONLY ALBUM . . .or anything like that. . .but this continues to be an influence on anyone serious about jazz.
It is one of the twenty greatest jazz albums of all time.

I Can't Help Myself..........2006-08-30
"The emperor has no clothes!" There, I said it - finally. I have been wanting to say that about Rudy Van Gelder's stereo recordings for quite some time now. His stereo recordings lack ambiance and have very small soundstages with no depth. This should come as no surprise since most were recorded in his parents living room, but even those that were recorded in a proper studio are no better. Of all the jazz available on CD today, the Blue Note label represents the bottom of the sonic barrel. That's too bad since Blue Note owns most of the greatest jazz performances ever put to tape.
This album was recorded in a real studio, but it suffers the same problems as most of Rudy's other stereo recordings. To make matters worse, it has distortion that isn't normally present in RVG's work, perhaps it's due to problems related to the tape's magnetic coating flaking off. Suffice it to say this is no audiophile quality CD.
All ranting about the sound quality aside, this is an excellent jazz performance. I don't need to tell you how good it is - just read all the other reviews.

Got me up and running.......2000-12-27
I'm an intermediate level bass player backing up a praise band at church and a company sponsored big band, but I'd never soloed or played a melody till I took a jazz class that used this book.
Melody lines in the tunes are very readable, even though I did not know most of the songs, and had never played any of them. Tempos are moderate for a productive learning experience--our jazz band performs "Impressions" a lot faster than Aebersold teaches it. And his improv technique got me up and playing pretty quickly. Now I know what in improv solo is and how to get there. It improved my backup skills as well, and overall improved my confidence to step out more even in the backup role. Had a great time, and I'm headed back for another class with another Aebersold book.
A First Class Learning Aid.......2000-05-26
This is a terrific purchase for intermediate level players. The selections are in relatively slow tempos and there is a wealth of information if you are a multi-instrumentalist. The CD recording is good and allows you to mute either the bass or piano acoompaniment as they are recorded on separate channels. There is a recommended discography for each track. My only criticism is that it would be better to have the tracks recorded twice, once with just piano, bass and drums (what you get now) and recorded again with a lead instrument playing the notated themes in the supplied booklet.
FABULOUS-.......1999-11-10
Professional backup for you to solo in whatever key- c, bflat, eflat, your instrument is in. really fun to improvise and learn the "art" of jazz. This is a must for anyone wanting to learn how jazz musicans improvise.

Great moder day Jazz singer.......2007-05-10
Not too many singers are like this today. This album features her at her best. Singing loose and freely. its one I play from first track to last. The jazz is excellent and the vocals are too.
Bought sight unheard.......1999-08-12
I just saw her at the Telluride Jazz Celebration and Herb Wong introduced her as the next great jazz diva, likening her to Billie Holiday. I thought, "Hmmm," and tucked in for the ride. She was amazing. Incredibly expressive, great phrasing and nuance, she's got the goods. Very connected to women's energy. Her "Four Women" by Nina Simone is what is making me buy this CD right now. Don't miss her live. She's very appreciative of those who attend live music. She thanked us for being there but it was all of us in Telluride who should be thanking her.
Excellent CD, Nnenna has grown as an artist........1999-01-07
I saw Nnenna perform selections from her CD at Yoshi's in San Fransico. She was excellent. All the tracks are by female artists and performs them with passion, especially Nina Simone's Four Women.

Customer Reviews:
Great Debut Cool Jazz Album but Needs Remastering!.......2005-11-26
This is a wonderful debut for Herbie and clearly shows the influence of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" as well as provides hints of "Bitches Brew" in a couple of tracks as well i.e. modal work plus hints of the avant-garde. Freddie Hubbard does some great work here and so does Coleman on sax with Herbie expertly supporting on piano. The first and last tracks are the strongest although there really isn't a weak track here. However, this version, unlike the clearly inaccurate product description, is not the Japanese mini-lp sleeve remastered version and hence could use this very treatment. My recommendation is to get the remastered version of this worthy addition to any jazz lover's cd collection.
Like A Cool Breeze.......2005-06-07
Maiden Voyage was one of only about 10 albums I had in college (student budget), and I don't regret it. This is the most cool jazz album I've heard other than Kind of Blue which must have played a great influence on this creative nexus of Hancock, Hubbard, George Coleman, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. My favorite two songs are "Maiden Voyage" (the trumpet notes flutter around like swirling water or air) and the ballad "Dolphin Dance".
uuaaauu sound.......2003-05-21
I'm just discovering jazz, but "Little one" is one of the most relaxing songs I've ever heard. The sensation of peaceful and the relaxatation I've experimented while I've been hearing it, is like being alone on the beach at the end of the day with the red sky over the quite sea.
A JAZZ CLASSIC.......2002-03-07
THIS IS ONE OF THE 3 OR 4 ALBUMS THAT EMERGED DURING THE MID 1960'S THAT SOMEHOW MANAGED TO CHANGE THE WHOLE COURSE OF JAZZ.
IT HELPED TO TRANSFORM JAZZ FROM THE MAINLY BOP, SWING FORMAT,
AND TOOK INTO ANOTHER DIRECTION.FOR EXAMPLE, THE PIECE CALLED-
MAIDEN VOYAGE COULD AND HAS BEEN PLAYED ON SMOOTHE JAZZ RADIO
STATIONS TO THIS VERY DAY AND COULD STILL HANG WITH THE LIKES OF DAVE KOZE,SANBORNE,AND MANY, MANY MORE OF TODAYS ARTISTS.
Finding Fault.......2000-06-07
with this album boggles my mind. It is one of the best jazz records ever made, and still sounds fresh and hip nearly 40 years after it was recorded.
If for nothing else, listen to Tony Williams on the drums-amazing playing that ushered in a whole new era of jazz drumming.

from what i heard
in 1977 just when iron maiden ((the 80's heavy metal famous band) start to earn some good rep someone wlked into the backstage of one show and told steve harris (founder bassist) that he'll get suied because there's another iron maiden
steve didn't care and countinue doin' his thing and thank god they didn't change thier name
ps: i'm a big fan of both iron maidens ;)
Iron Maiden - 'Maiden Voyage' (Audio Archives).......2006-04-21
First off,for many of you who may not know, this isn't THE Iron Maiden with vocalist Bruce Dickinson, bassist Steve Harris,Eddy the zombie mascot, etc. This was the sole 1969 album by a short-lived UK 'progressive heavy rock' outfit. Some might consider it to be an early doom metal effort.Nice CD reissue, with the original lp's eight rocking cuts. The better tracks being the twelve-minute "Liar","Ritual" and "Ballad Of Martha Kent".See how you like it.Line-up:Steve Drewett-vocals,Trevor Thoms(later to join Nik Turner's Inner City Unit)-guitar,Barry Skeels-bass and Paul Reynolds-drums.Was tough to seek out much info on this band.Guess the internet can't have it ALL.

Ditto to the previous reviewer, and when can we have "Spring High"?.......2007-06-15
In the late 60s, my "Maiden Voyage" LP was the most worn-out vinyl I owned. "Les Fleur" and "Ode" were my theme songs.
I searched for years for a CD version of it and its "sister" LP, "Mother Nature's Son," full of Beatles songs elaborately arranged by the pre-Earth, Wind & Fire Charles Stepney.
This collection, compiling the two LPs, was a wish come true.
At the time I ordered "Maiden Voyage and More" the price was $20 higher than it is now. Why is that?
I agree with William Stout, and that's why I'm giving it 4 stars, too (notwithstanding the exorbitant price I paid for this collection): "In the Heat of the Night" belongs on this collection.
Now, when can we expect Ramsey's early 80s "Love Notes" with Maestro Lewis' "Spring High" on it?
Maiden Voyage (And Less).......2006-04-23
Maiden Voyage is my favorite Ramsey Lewis LP and one of my favorite LPs of all time. "Les Fleurs" is a masterpiece of trippy and exotic sensuality with great ethereal vocals by Minnie Ripperton (she recorded a slightly harsher vocal version around the same time --- with back-up by the Ramsey Lewis Trio --- for her own debut LP). Charles Stepney's production and arrangements are sophisticated yet earthy: simply stunning. So why just 4 stars and not 5? Although the CD added some Beatles songs it deleted two fine songs that appeared on the original LP: "In the Heat of the Night" and "Afro-Boogaloo Twist". Why?! There is no good reason for this. There is still plenty of room on that CD for those two songs even with the added Beatles tracks.
The CD is still available by the way (at least it is in shops here in Los Angeles), so there's no reason to pay premium prices for this readily available (and apparently in-print) disc.
I sure wish they'd release the other Charles Stepney-produced Ramsey Lewis LPs on CD....
DARN!!!!.......2005-10-26
DARN!!!! Why does this item cost so much??? It's almost as old as I am. I started listening to Ramsey Lewis when I was about 8 years old; I'm 50!! WHY DOES THIS CD COST SO MUCH!!!! I gave it a 5 star rating because I have loved this album since I was a little girl. I would love to buy it, BUT IT COST TOO MUCH!!!
My favorite Ramsey Lewis CD!.......2003-03-04
A lot of jazz "purists" probably take exception to this CD, but the music is just great music, period. I bought the vinyl album when it first came out and have always considered it a favorite. The voices and strings on the title track give the music an "otherworldly" quality that fits wonderfully with the excellent pianisms of Mr. Lewis. "Ode" "Only when I'm Dreaming", and "Le Fleur" are very beautiful, haunting pieces of music that stay with you long after you have turned off the CD player. The cover tunes, including "the Mighty Quinn" and "San Jose" are also very good. This CD is a terrific buy!

Album Description
As I returned from my maiden voyage from the land of Britain full of awe, unspeakable joy and deep reservoirs of inspiration, slowly the music started to speak. From the high craggy cliffs where the ruins of Tintagel castle lay overlooking the dark waters off Cornwall's shore, to the ancient majestic ruins of Glastonbury Abbey and the dark mysteries of the Tower of London, the swirling maze of the city's streets and the magic of the standing stones on Salisbury Plain, I swam deep in the waters of imagination. Shortly after returning home and embarking on creating "At the Edge of the Cornish Sea", I soon shared with the world, dark grief and immense sadness as the two towers crumbled to the earth creating it's deep grave of shattered lives and dreams. What once seemed important became insignificant against the dark clouds of sorrow. Over the long months of searching for meaning and reasons to keep faith alive in the simple and profound moments in our lives, the realms of purpose slowly unfolded and once again music quietly spoke through the silence to deliver it's unworldly sense of beauty and hope. Remembering what an honor it is to be here in this world and cherishing the mystery of our lives humbly opened once again a door and gave me courage to dream.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent recording........1999-03-22
I cannot think of anything better to say than the caption on the album itself: "A tender soiree, a romantic tete-a-tete, the anticipation of a jour fixe are what come to mind when listening to this album of fond reminiscences from a vanished but perhaps more colourful and intimate era. As an expression of a quite definite spirit of an epoch, the music on this recording is romantic without being sentimental, colourful but never flamboyant, and intimate whilst avoiding excessive stylisation."
The music is beautifully played, and the recording quality is of the highest. It is definately a bargain at the twelve or so dollars Amazon.com is charging.
