Hooray for Hollywood!.......2007-07-22
I bought this CD to go with an Academy Awards/Hollywood Walk-of-Fame theme party that I did for work. It really lent that dramatic mood that I was looking for to usher in the theme as people entered that room on the first day after it was decorated.
Please also see my review for the CD Beautiful Hollywood.
Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30
we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.
Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10
This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.

Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2007-04-17
This album is a must have if you are a fan of Omar's work in At The Drive-In, The Mars Volta, De Facto, and his other various works. It is very groovy and experimental. It features musical appearances from many popular and underground musicians. If you haven't looked into much of his work, then this would be one of the first to pick up.
The Best of the All the ATDI/Mars Volta Side Projects.......2006-04-02
It took me a year or so to appreciate all the places that this one goes, but after careful deliberation and a continuously ballooning obsession with Mars Volta, I have decided that this is better than DeFacto and Omar's newest solo album, the projects that have come outside ATDI and Volta. It goes all over the place, the highlight to this approach being the acid-soaked salsa freak-out "Deus Ex Machina." Really, this is true salsa, with a salsa singer singing about "la reina de [su] vida" or the queen of his heart. The whole time the traditional instruments are drenched in phaser and distortion, creating a salsa song like none you've ever heard.
There are some very intriguing guitar-noise experiments that differ from track to track, the whole thing being capped off with a song that sounds like Mars Volta since Cedric sings on it ("the palpitations form a limit"). The rest is pure instrumental esotericism. If you are curious to hear what Omar and Co. do outside of ATDI and Mars Volta, this is the place to start. I have a strong feeling that you will want to buy all the other side project material after this one, exposing you fully to the constant joy, wonder, and mind-blowing that goes with being a Mars Volta fanatic. I would love to describe all of these strange excursions on this album, but I am not going to mar with words the terrains that Omar plumbs with sounds. I am going to leave it up to your perception to discover them for yourself.
Charles in charge. .......2006-03-03
I really miss Charles Bronson. I'll bet OAR-L does too.
The brilliant Mars Volta guitarist completed this soundtrack for a film he's been working on the last few years. It's got a similar vibe to those 80's "Deathwish" scores Jimmy Page composed; lots of guitar squeals and synthesizer moans, conjuring images of a nighttime filled with dread and danger.
"Dyna Sark Arches" could be one of those creepy, calm before the storm moments, where Bronson examines his impressive collection of firearms, just before slaughtering various sneering, swarthy, evil men with greasy ponytails.
"Around Knuckle White Tile" is a cross between Floyd circa "Meddles" and "Puppets"-era Metallica. There's also the rock salsa of "Deus Ex Machina"; Santana crossed with 60's latin jazz albums from Blue Note and Verve.
Many great influences appear here. But the predominant one would seem to be that of an old man kicking some serious ass.
No Doubt That This Is Great.......2005-12-02
I like this kind of music in the first place so that was help already, wehn i frist lisented to it i thought it was great. The second time around i though it was mostly "garbage". I still listen to it and i do like it that one time was weird. It is mood music for sure no one can say it's not, most Mars Volya fans will like this. I am one of them.
Defenitly worth a good few listens in different places to set the mood
Mood Music.......2005-10-29
This album is one hundred percent mood music. It has very little actual structure to it, which should hardly surprise you if you think about the fact that its a soundtrack to what will probably be a very strange artsy movie.
I'll be honest, when I first heard it I was unimpressed. I skipped over half the tracks after a few minutes of listening to them. The one track that came recommended to me, Track 4, was the worst on the album.
I put the album away for about a year, then pulled it back out after exhausting the two Mars Volta and all the ATDI that I had. Turns out, I was wrong. The music is great for listening to when you are doing other things, like driving or playing a video game. It consists almost entirely of layered guitar tracks. The music is highly experimental and I can imagine that many people will not like it much.
The ambient noise on many tracks and the exceptionally low volume at the beginnings of most of the songs makes for a very inaccessible album. But once you've heard it a couple of times and your ears are accustomed to the sound, I can tell you that you will enjoy every moment.
The reason I gave this four stars: As an exception to my enjoy every moment comment above, you will probably hate track 4, I know I do. In addition, while the album is great on mood and layers, I find that it suffers somewhat from its lack of any kind of structure. If you are paying close attention to the songs, you will quite probably find them somewhat repetative. Not to say that it is totally without sections, but the sections tend to go on a long time without extreme variation.

Amazon.com essential recording
It's a measure of Roy Orbison's classics that even some of the uptempo songs that break up the dominant balladic mood of this 20-song collection are themselves fairly melancholic. Rarely does Orbison allow himself the outright celebration of something like "Mean Woman Blues," more often going for the shades of gray that slip into "Blue Angel" and "Leah." Few could do what he achieves on these singles, and not just because few are gifted with such a voice. The biggest achievement of all may be Orbison's ability to make a devastated cry like "Only the Lonely" sound somehow peaceful. --Rickey Wright

This CD brought back lots of good memories. Roy Orbison was one of the Greats, Saw him in person years ago and will never forget the great voice he had. I recommend buying this CD
Best 1 disc Orbison collection.......2007-05-27
This is the best single disc collection of Roy Orbison's Monument hits. It was originally released on 2 LPs in the early 80's. One thing I've always wondered about is that this 20 track CD has always been also available as 2 separate volumes with 10 tracks each & having the same cover artwork (you'd have to be careful to read the list of tracks on the back) Why?? If someone is an Orbison fan why would they want one volume & not the other? Why not just have all 20 tracks on one CD, as it is done here? Also, one reviewer asks why "You Got It" isn't here, well it's because that song wasn't even recorded yet when this album was released, and that song was on Virgin Records, not Monument.
It is Roy Orbison.......2007-03-29
What more can be said? Roy Orbison has a quality of voice that can't be duplicated. One of the few really original and great voices.
Sound is good.......2007-03-21
I would like to suggest, contrary to the review of Aug 2006, that the sound on this nice collection of Roy Orbison's Monument hits, is actually quite good.
With the puzzling exception of the song LOVE HURTS, which seems to have been mastered from a very muffled tape.
This Sony disk was issued in 1989, and has not been re-mastered since then, so you're getting a relatively unfutzed edition for a nominal price.
All time greatest Hits of Roy Orbison.......2007-01-10
Love this CD. Just what I ezpected and wanted. Would recommend it to my friends.

Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock & roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the Bend,""Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. This gold version of the title offers superior sound quality for a higher price than the standard-issue CD. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
One of the most essential CDs of all-time.......2007-04-22
Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Chronicle" is one of the first CDs any music fan should buy. It's a flawless collection of some of the greatest American music ever recorded.
CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL IS A REAL ROCK N' ROLL BAND PLAYING REAL ROCK N' ROLL MUSIC. .......2007-02-12
I will be writing a review on a band that needs no formal introduction. The world in general, to this very day, is still felt by their influence despite disbanding in July 1972. The roaring sixties would be the decade that would produce Rock's most elite bands. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL would be one of those bands that would be born in the mist of the sixties and deliver some of Rock's most sacred classic songs. The album I'm about to review is the result of some of CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL'S most sacred classic songs. This compilation album would be titled as "CHRONICLE, THE 20 GREATEST HITS." This legendary compilation album was originally released in 1976 on Vinyl/LP and cassette on the Fantasy Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL is for real. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL will always be remembered for being the peoples band and not just for the real tough and rugged sound that went through their amplifiers and microphones. When you hear their music, you know right off the bat that it is truly CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. There is nobody that can play real raw Rock n' Roll music like they can. What's even more fascinating is that CCR never used any synthesizers, gadgets or enhancements to improve their overall style of sound that the band would forever be remembered for. CCR played their music with such confidence and authority that they would play in your face with their motto "what you hear is what you get." What CCR also should have said is "you've already heard the rest, now come hear the best. CCR'S sound is so rare and unique that nobody has ever dared to copy or emulate them in anyway shape or form other than the tribute band named CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVISITED. When brothers John Fogerty on lead guitar, vocals and the late great Tom Fogerty on rhythm guitar met up and recruited Stu Cook on bass and Doug Clifford on drums, a rare band would be born with a rare sound that would forever identify them in a very unique way. CCR'S music is so bad a*s that their rugged tough music style will forever always be associated with all bikers and be labeled as biker music. In my opinion, "CHRONICLE, THE 20 GREATEST HITS" is a true testament of their most celebrated Rockers and is a fine tribute to a real band that was truly ahead of their time. CCR represented the people and the youth culture of the turbulent roaring sixties and it showed through their music.
In my opinion, every single Rocker listed on this album is nothing short of outstanding. All I will tell you is if you really want to hear some real Rock n' Roll, hear the following Rockers such as "Susie Q," Fogerty's composition Rocker that would later become Ike and Tina Turner's signature classic song "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Green River," "Commotion," "Down On The Corner," "Fortunate Son," the Rock band anthem "Travelin' Band," "Up Around The Bend," "Run Through The Jungle," "Lookin' Out My Back Door," the Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight and The Pips classic song "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," "Have You Ever Seen The Rain," "Hey Tonight" and "Sweet Hitch-Hiker." Believe me when I say that these Rockers kick a*s.
CCR also has a mellower side to their Rock style and it is evident in legendary classic songs such as "I Put A Spell On You," "Lodi," "Who'll Stop The Rain," the encouraging classic "Long As I Can See The Light" and the emotional hard hitting "Someday Never Comes."
Overall, this is one hell of a real a*s kicking album worth checking out. Hearing this whole collection might make one think that how can anybody record and put out great music like this constantly and consistently throughout their whole glorious career.
I would like to encourage and highly recommend that everyone purchase this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of their own personal music collection. This is not just any album, but a true rare unique piece of Rock n' Roll history. This legendary compilation album has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. What's more is that there is a Volume Two compilation album with more of CCR'S most sacred classic Rockers that I have to review at a later date so stay tuned.
In closing, with CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL already disbanded since 1972 due to management and record label conflicts and the untimely death of John Fogerty's brother Tom Fogerty on 6 September 1990, it now seems unlikely that a real CCR reunion would ever take place. However, there was a brief reunion with all of the remaining members and became CCR one more time. This historic reunion happened as a result of receiving the highest ultimate honor of being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in January 1993. With contract disputes and obligations resolved between John Fogerty and his old label Fantasy Records, Fogerty is now back recording on his old label again and bringing back the sound that made CCR the household name that they would forever be known for. With this in mind, Fogerty is adding more to the CCR legend with new tales and stories to make into new chapters in the life and storied career of one of the greatest Rock bands of all-time, CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL. So here's to you John, the late great Tom, Stu and Doug. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL LIVES. JOHN FOGERTY RULES. R.I.P. TOM FOGERTY, Born 9 November 1941, Died 6 September 1990. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
Rock 'n Roll, Blues and Country Influenced - and fun too!.......2006-06-28
My first introduction to CCR was "Cosmos Factory," released in the dark ages of 1970. What a great introduction to CCR. Fully 7 of the 11 songs from that album are represented on this collection of greatest hits. CCR released 7 original albums, and though "Chronicle" includes 20 songs from those albums, someone later decided to release a "Chronicle II" that included another 20 CCR songs, including two more of the "Cosmos Factory" songs.
CCR had a very unique sound, owing in part to John Fogerty's unusual, yet very listenable, voice. CCR has been called rockabilly by some, but I prefer to see CCR as part of the diversification of rock music that led to the popularity of groups such as The Eagles. Yes, there is some influence of what was once known as Hillbilly or bluegrass, but there is just as much influence from rock and roll and country. There may even be a flavor of folk music.
Sometimes the music sounds almost like classic rock and roll, as you listen to songs such as "Proud Mary." Other times the sound is almost contemporary with the early 70s in songs like "Who'll Stop the Rain." Other times the music seems to transcend all genres in songs like "Up Around the Bend," which starts out like a hard rock song, and then reveals a country base in the harmonies and the lyrics.
Then there are blues-influenced songs such as "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and "I Put a Spell on You." "Run through the Jungle" has influences that might remind you of Jimi Hendrix, yet blues are also evident. The lyrics will recall images of the Viet Nam war. Another Viet Nam war related song is "Fortunate Son."
Occasionally CCR's lyrics create odd mixtures. "Looking Out My Backdoor" has lyrics that would fit well with many of the psychedelic songs of the era, yet is played with a country-rock style. These contradictions are part of what made CCR a great and novel group.
There are a couple of versions of this CD available. This version is a gold CD that some fans prefer when available. You may want to survey the versions available before selectin the one that best meets your needs.
I enjoy music that creates a trend without trying to do so. A true artist is one who does what they want to do for themselves. When they become successful, that is fine, but they do so on their own terms. CCR was such a group. This CD collects some of their better known songs, and is a great addition to any collection. However, please keep going after you've bought this one. You will find that there is a lot of good music left on their albums. Enjoy!
so cool.......2004-01-23
this album is the best in this world for a man like me. i spend so mucht time on road and this album was my best friend in intro the years. i lost it(the album),and i miss it.
Hurrah for CCR.......2002-02-01
It's hard to believe how good this album sounds when it was recorded so long ago. A lot of the tracks are monaural. CCR was a very simple band with no big band sound yet they could rock it with guitars bass and a scattered sax solo. These were simpler time and the music reflects it. Three cheers for this great group who gave us so much enjoyment.

Early Lightnin'.......2005-11-02
Lightnin' Hopkins was one of the most prolific blues artists of all time, recording hundreds of songs for scores of labels. These early Gold Star recordings were made in Houston during the late 1940s and contain some of his greatest sides. Hopkins was always at his best on slow, down-home tunes where the verses just poured out of him like water from a faucet. (Hopkins composed blues verses at the drop of a hat; I bet he dreamed in the 12-bar form.) SHORT HAIRED WOMAN (a theme he sang about on numerous occasions), AUTOMOBILE BLUES, TRAVELER'S BLUES, and GOODBYE BLUES are just a small selection of the excellent examples of Hopkins's repertoire included here.
From the first chords he plays on his amplified guitar we know it's Lightnin', his style is distinct. Styles changed in blues while Hopkins was on the scene, but his never did - and that was totally fine by me. Anybody interested in the blues needs to check out Lightnin' Hopkins if they haven't done so already. And this is the best of his early stuff. Go for it! [There's a Volume 2 on Arhoolie of additional Gold Star sides that is just as good as this CD; in fact, the two CDs are a tandem. Get both.]
Lightnin' at his best.......2002-02-19
I have been a Lightnin' fan for almost 10 years and I have probably 20 of his discs. This, along with Autobiography in Blues is one of my favorites. Lightnin' has always been one of my favorite blues musicians because he sings and plays from the heart. Isn't that what the blues is really about? This album showcases Lightnin's guitar playing skills at his best and his singing at its most emotional. True, the sound quality is not great by today's standards, but Lightnin's mastery of the blues idiom comes across in every track. Personally I think the scratchiness of the tracks adds something to them. Nobody plays the blues like Lightnin'. This is truly an essential album for any blues fan.
Great blues can be rough.......2001-02-10
A previous reviewer found fault with the sound quality of this disc, which features some of the earliest recordings of Texas blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins. Well, no real argument there. Sound quality does vary, sometimes widely, and recordings made directly from old 78s (as most of these were) more than 50 years ago just are not going to be perfect. But marvelous music does not have to be pristine; anyone who rejects songs this great because of sound quality is going to miss out on incalculable treasures. Anyone who truly loves blues can look past the hisses (and the CD is not unlistenable). There is strong music here. Only a couple up-tempo boogies. It's mostly just Lightnin' and his guitar and the beautiful sound they make, although there is a cool track of Lightnin' playing his impression of zydeco on a sort of roller-rink sounding organ and one fun cut with a small combo. This would easily get 5 stars on basis of the music. It deserves 4 1/2 but I have to give it 4 in this ratings system, solely because of the sound. It might be fun if somebody tried to clean these up using the latest noise reduction equipment. Anyway, Volume 2 in this series is just as good, and for true perfection buy the better-sounding "The Complete Aladdin Recordings", cut at about the same time and featuring the same kind of stellar Texas country blues.
Nice songs but unsatisfactory sound quality.......2001-01-11
Mostly accompanied by himself on the electric guitar, this album has some nice songs in it, such as "Going Home Blues", "Seems Funny Baby", "Fast Life Woman", etc. The drawback, however, is the backgroud noise. You may feel bored after you finish playing the whole CD.

At last! Maud Powell's musicianship available again.......2002-01-03
This is a reissue of "The Art of Maud Powell, a 'Victor Immortal' - complete recordings 1904-1917" prepared by the Maud Powell Foundation (Arlington, VA) in 1989. The guiding spirit behind that foundation, and project director of this collection, is Powell's biographer Karen A. Shaffer.
These three CDs were available only from the Maud Powell Foundation. I managed to get volume 3 several years ago after hearing all three discs from a library, but volume 2 has not been available. So, I've waited for volumes 1 and 2 hoping they'd come back "someday." Well, here they are, and Naxos has also released volume 3 according to their January 2 2002 newsletter.
Maud Powell (1867-1920) was in 1904 the first solo instrumentalist to record for Victor's new celebrity artist series on their Red Seal label. Their promotional materials told us to "Listen to Maud Powell's violin...if you want to find out how much can be got out of a fiddle, go--listen to--Maud Powell." They were right.
Powell's performances are the type of playing that may bring tears to your eyes, going straight to the heart and soul of the music and resonating with whatever you find inside yourself. She starts with a remarkably intense tone and naturally easy phrasing, then adds a tastefully varied vibrato and portamento (as vocally-inspired ornaments to heighten the expressivity). She varies her intonation according to the keys and the directions of the phrases, as her younger contemporary Pablo Casals did on the cello. It is extraordinary, like the best singer one can imagine but going beyond words. It is the kind of performance where it doesn't even matter what music she's playing...classical bon-bons, excerpts, folk songs, whatever. The music becomes a living thing in performances this good: breathing and moving and dancing right in front of you, and commanding your attention. It will get to you and you will feel it. What more needs to be said?
Bravo to Naxos for making these recordings available. The sound is pretty good, too, considering that the recordings were made before the availability of electric microphones. I hardly notice the background noise of the record since the performances are so directly engaging. These discs would be a "must-have" even at three or four times the price that Naxos is asking for them....

Customer Reviews:
You gotta, gotta, gotta get this cd!.......2004-12-12
Never in the history of radio has there been anyone quite like Murray Saul. The heart and soul of the #1 rock station in america, WMMS Cleveland, for years, Murray was an icon with few peers. He wasn't a dj. He wasn't an artist. He was the 'GET DOWN' man. Every friday night at 6 o'clock,it seemed like every radio in the city tuned to WMMS to hear him. Young people, old people, white people, black people, rich people, poor people--- everyone listened to the 'GET DOWN' man. It was amazing! You'd hear him blasting from the radios in passing cars. You'd hear him in every electronics store and department store. I even remember walking in downtown Cleveland one friday evening and hearing him echoing between the buildings, the sound eminating from office windows above. It was our call-- our call to forget the troubles of the past week. Forget the hassles at school, at work, at home. Forget anything that was getting you down. It was friday! It was the weekend! It was time to party-- to let down your hair, cast aside your inhibitions and go nuts. Enjoy life, enjoy sex, drugs, rock and roll, or whatever made you happy. And we did... Buy this cd and listen to it. It will make you feel good. From his rants about the 'slavedriver' (your teacher, boss, mom, dad...), to his 'recipies' or turning your lover into everything from a tossed salad to an ice cream sundae ( "add a little whipped cream, mmm...and don't forget the nuts!" ) you'll find it at once entertaining and relevant. It isn't one of those things that 'you just had to be there'. You can be there now. Listen. Enjoy. And, above all else--" Get Down, Dammit!"
Spread the Word.......2003-06-22
There's still a buzzard hanging out my window, but I think he's waiting for me to kick now. I was caught up in those groovy wavy gravy kinda days, in Cleveburg, when the Get Down Man was raving and slathering the call to the weekend.
There was nothing like it then and still is nothing like it now. Five minutes of every Friday night was dedicated to the not-so-harp-like tones of the rabbi of rock, the cantor of cool. A classy verbal taunt unlike anything the great Wolfman or any other rock iconoclast has equalled. I was lucky enough to have a good friend, still employed in Downtown Cleveburg, who had Harmon Cardon reels of virtually every word. At the turn of the millenia, we listened to hours of this stuff and it was like a wake-up call. If you don't have the luck to know someone who had this kind of adulation to the supreme Friday theme of the 70's--pick this one up. Pop it in the CD-player on your drive home Friday--and let your soul fly free!
A Bacchanalian Call to Arms!!!!!.......1999-06-27
Fasten your seatbelts. Pack a lunch. We're going on a trip back through time. It's not so very long ago. However, if you're one of those who've forgotten how to live life full-tilt, it may as well be the last millenium. But wait. There's hope in the form of "Murray Saul, The Get Downs: Vol. 1". Read on.Throughout the '70s and beyond, WMMS-FM was the number one radio station in Cleveland, home of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Of far more importance, when it came to cutting-edge, groundbreaking programming, 'MMS was, arguably, the foremost station in the nation. The heart and soul of 'MMS was one Murray Saul, that by virtue of a mere few minutes on-air weekly. Here's how it worked:Every Friday at 6 p.m., Murray would launch into a combination rant/call to revelrie, ushering in the weekend with a fire-and-brimstone denunciation of the "slave driver" -- the bane of everyone who ever had to toil for a living. This would be followed by the "antidote": a Bacchanalian plea to live for the moment (or at least the weekend) before having to return to working-class hell come Monday morning. To read Saul's modus operandi is one thing. To hear him growl it from the very depths of his being is something no words can adequately describe. Veering wrecklessly from anger and righteous indignation at the state of the world, to the sort of frenzy known only to those who've re-written the record books in the quest for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (which back then of course meant "sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll"), Murray was controversial, you bet. But, man, did he ever strike one great, big, fat, philosophical power chord. And he didn't even need a Gibson Les Paul to do it. The only way to experience Saul in all his vessel-busting glory is via "The Get Downs...", a spoken-word, best-of collection named after Murray's weekly coda, "We gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta.....get down, damnit!!!!!" If the rap sounds familiar, that's because over the years, numerous stations around the country, Q-104 here in NYC for instance, have replayed Murray's chant without giving any credit. Shame on them. They'll get theirs. (Tip: In a showdown between karma and radio, always put your money on karma.)You've heard the expression, "You had to be there"? Not in this case. The message is as timeless now as it was then. Earlier in this review, the term "rant" was used. To the contemporary reader, this may conjure up Sam Kinison, Dennis Miller, Howard Stern.Hey, Murray beat 'em all to the punch. Whatever he upchucked over the airwaves, you can be sure he lived it, breathed it, owned it. The proof's in this CD -- a contact high if ever there was one. Teddy Roosevelt: Spoke softly. Carried a big stick. Murray Saul: Spoke loudly. Carried Thai sticks. But you gotta love him."The Get Downs". It's the thrill ride of the summer. And, ironically, it's legal. Raj BahadurNew York City

Give them a Little more time........2004-01-27
The Eigth Day,The Honey Cone, The Chairman of The Board,
Freida Payne all on one cd from one of the greatest soul
producing teams of all time. If you love 70's soul music,
you know these names. The Eigth day, while only having
2 memorable hits were Rose Royce before Rose Royce.
The could make you happy to be sad, because the voice
was smooth as silk. Honey Cone came alive, just as the
Supremes' music died. (much of the Supremes music was
written by these guys) Freida Payne's record of
"Bring The Boys Home" was so powerful it was banned
from Armed Forces radio stations. If you have ever
been in a place you wanted to leave far behind then
catch "Westbound No.9." Give these songs one more time
and you love for 70's music will surely grow.

Customer Reviews:
Good music, good fun.......2003-04-27
This is a very enjoyable CD. It does not include "serious" wind quintet repertoire (very underrated and ignored music, by the way), but many transcriptions of well know tunes, like Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, Bizet's Carmen, Strauss' pizzicato polka (yes) and so on, that they have been playing as bises in their concerts. This is one of the specialities of the Moraguès quintet (thanks to their oboist, David Walter), and the results are amazing. Forget your prejudices about the original scores (which are absolutely respectable, of course) and have a go. There is a lot of good humour all the way along, and a very very skillful playing from all of them, careful tuning and musical phrasing. At this price, it is a bargain, I only regret that the recordings of this group are so difficult to find. Definitely recommended.
