5 out of 5 stars Tranced Out-- and Liking It!.......2001-11-08

This album is great for movement, for a background for meditative action or ritual-- just don't try it while you're driving. Although it is not a quiet, reflective album, its mix of beats, instrumentation, and murmurs is helpful in getting energy flowing.

London's Outcaste Records continues to sate those in the know with some of the most intriguing fusionary sounds on either side of the Atlantic. Untouchable Outcaste Beats, Volume 1 will serve as the label's American calling card--an amalgam of tracks from its roster as well as from other seminal works in the genre. Dance Music Federation's essential "Cybersitar" stands out as a pioneering work, lacing a furious breakbeat with confused sitars and repetitive chant. Artists like Shri, with his serene "Meditations"; Nitin Sawnhey, who takes it to the lounge with "Bengali Song"; and Badmarsh, who abuses the hardsteppers on the dance floor with "Jungle Sitars" all take the music on divergent paths yet still find roots both in traditional Indian sounds and more frenetic U.K. club rhythms. The Outcaste sound fails to be monolithic, and precisely because of that, it paves the roads toward tomorrow. --Jon Caramanica

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Sample of Asian Underground genre.......2005-03-26

This super CD should wet your appetite for the richness of the so called asian underground music. The only caveat about CD, is you may want just go ahead and buy the cds of the artists, so you won't have extra versions of the tracks once you are hooked on their music. The mixture of eastern and mostly western rhythm is truly refreshing and uplifting. Who had it first? These guys or the theivery corporation?

5 out of 5 stars Great ! a must!!!!.......2004-08-04

Great cd. Tracks are awsome. track #3 cyber sitar - amazing!
outcaste has done it again

4 out of 5 stars CAREFULLY!!!.......2002-08-11

the breaks and rhythms in many tracks are *quite* repetetive, sterile, and boring - lightweight and not mental or cut-up enough (for me), although the other sampling, sounds and intruments are perfect. This maybe a bit wishy washy for hardcore Jungle & dNb heads but the Indian influence is well dealt with and the CD really is a must for anyone interested in the cross over.

5 out of 5 stars Th CD will open your eyes!.......2001-11-10

How good can a various artist Cd get? Is there a limit to a single CD's greatness? Can a Cd be so good that you cannot stop listning to it? Yes there is. This one. This CD is very unusual totally racy and expermental and is a true winner. Excillent tracks by some of the best artists to come out form the Asian Unnderground Movement. It also has some classics from the 60's and 70's flower prower era. Besides jungel standerds by the likes of Nitin Swahny, Shri and Barmarsh there are some excillent break beat hooks by Up, Bustel and Out and Pressur drop. In fact "the theam from outcaste" is probably the best electronic track i have ever heard period. Also T.J. Rehmi and Niraj Chag lend there fantastic expertiese to this already beautiful collection of stars and ofcourse there is the timeless classic Mathar....only song i have ever heard where electric guitar and a sitar actually work. I never review a Cd unless i am gonna give it 5 stars and trust me, I would give this one 20 if i could . Excillent cd.

5 out of 5 stars Exotic.......2001-10-31

This CD, while not nearly as well known, ranks up there with Sounds of the Asian Underground. I woudn't say that about many other indie mixes, except maybe Tabla Beat Science, and some of Badmarsh & Shri's best stuff.

Here's my breakdown:
1) The cover art is cool.
2) The title for the CD is pretty damn bold. I wondered if the music could hold up to a title like that. Happily, it does.
3) About the music: This CD moves in and out of traditional and modern techniques. We are presented with some of the ancient power instruments such as tablas and sitars, mixed with warm deep base, and electronic beats. The producers took care to let us enjoy each aspect fully. The past and the present are combined into something greater than the sum of its parts. In this way, we get a primordial sound that at once doesn't feel dated.

A must have addition to any indie collection.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH QUALITY WORLD MUSIC AT A GIVE AWAY PRICE!!!.......2004-06-22

I was shocked by the price of this CD and thought that this would be a bunch of recycled garbage or songs that were thrown together by some mixer just to make a CD. Contrary to my opinion, it wasn't! Palm Beats Volume 1 is an incredible compilation of world, dub, breakbeat and house music that is sure to satisfy all fans of those genre! This one will definitely be a hit for the summer and all those pool parties--and you really can't beat the price. Songs of note are from Polaris, Sidestepper and Baaba Mal! Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars cool groove international beats.......2004-06-11

A compilation of nicely remixed groove tracks from around the globe. From Jamaica's rhythm kings Sly & Robbie, to Algeria's Gigi, to Sidestepper (my personal favorite) from Columbia. Much more than "a sample of ethnicity" with break beats,
all tunes have an organic flow--difficult to achieve for basically computer generated electronica. All tracks feature mature musicianship and polish without being slick.
All in all, a good sample of hip World Beats.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars mediocre overall, but *does* have some "must have" tracks.......2005-10-29

The only reason to have this disc is if you have no other way to get the following must-have tracks:

      * Ode To Billy Joe - Lou Donaldson (used by Mary J. Blige)
      * Mystic Brew - Ronnie Foster (used by the Tribe Called Quest for Electric Relaxation)
      * It's Your Thing - Lou Donaldson
      * Dominoes - Donald Byrd
      * Get Out Of My Life Woman - Joe Williams (used by Biz I think)

I'd add Walk Tall by Cannonball Adderley, but it's *not* the version I think people have heard of, which was fantastically used in Brand Nubian's Concerto In X Minor. For this, you need Walk Tall/Mercy, Mercy, Mercy from Adderley's 1975 Phenix album.

I was really happy to get Mystic Brew, Ode To Billy Joe, and Get Out Of My Life Woman, as I had never had them before. The Lou Rawls is a good slow groove. The Shirley Bassey is a good soul groove.

The songs I haven't mentioned don't do anything for me; I'd never really heard them before this disc either.

5 out of 5 stars tasty and crunchy dolomite.......2004-07-13

if you are a Beastie Boys fan you'll hear some sources -- be sure and check and out "Put on Train" by the Three Sounds -- its pure dolomite!

4 out of 5 stars The least exciting volume of the series, but it's still dope.......2003-01-23

Blue Break Beats was compiled by Blue Note Records, giving any hip-hopper or R&B fan a crash course in songs where their favorite artist "got that beat from" (for example, many folks will recognize "It's Your Thing" as the "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down" groove by Brand Nubian). This volume has its standouts like "Dominoes" by Donald Byrd, "You've Made Me So Very Happy" by Lou Rawls, and a great rendition of "Light My Fire" by Shirley Bassey. But that song called, "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey", throws the album off course a little bit. Still get the album for the other songs, though, and once you listen to this volume, you're gonna want to get the other volumes, too.

3 out of 5 stars patchy, but some stone-cold classics in here.......1999-07-30

All the Blue Break Beats records are essential listening in my book. Sure, end to end listening can sometimes get a little afghan coat, but these albums have pure gold nuggets in amongst the beardy filler. Standout trax here are Gene Harris' funky, funky, funky version of "Don't Call Me Nigger Whitey" and Joe Williams utterly SMOKIN' "Get Out My Life Woman"....what an awesome groove, pool 'o' chocolate voice and a horn section that are so tight they must be underage. Alone , these two tunes are worth the price of admission. A wicked set.

Native Unit is an experimental project, fusing smokin' contemporary R&B and Hip Hop beats with some very serious World music, focusing on Spanish guitar, other world stringed instruments and a touch of acoustic piano. The project covers a wide range of emotions, from party to pretty. By any standard, it is intimate and sexy - good for restaurants, lounges and home listening - especially 'round midnight.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Tasty Licks.......2007-01-22

Eric Kamen's instrumental range and versility is truly a treat for the ears and soul. I listened to this CD for five hours straight the day it arrived. While I listened, I experienced a whole range of emotions, from sensual to cool and cocky, from sassy to warm and full, to downright titilated. This is adult music you can sink your emotions into. None of the cookie cutter stuff for Mr. Kamen. Bravo to you sir and I'm still listening.

5 out of 5 stars Barcelona Boo baby -.......2006-03-02

I bumped into this music by accident and sometimes those finds for me are the most thrilling. I'm elated when I feel like all my eclectic tastes are expressed in one unique and diverse way. This man obviously has traveled the world and has taken World Music, Flamenco, Urban and whatever else he could find and used his artistic imagination to combine it all seamlessly to make his mark. I highly recommend this listen to anyone who has an open mind about the aesthetic available from Independent artists with lots to give, guts and talent. (PS the artistic picture on the cover is Eric Kamen's wife not Eric Kamen)

5 out of 5 stars This Jazz fusion is a gift to world-weary travelers.......2006-02-19

It's steamy and seductive, hypnotic and haunting. Eric Kamen's Native Unit CD is filled with the ultra-lush sounds of Spanish guitar, acoustic piano, bass, drums, bazukis, sitar, strings, tubular bells, and Japanese Koto. Listening to this fused Jazz collection makes me feel less world-weary! It is like a beautiful musical oasis, where I can go and shut the door behind me! Produced as a series of "first takes" it has that raw here-and-now honesty and freshness that is lacking in so much of the current "spin" music... you must hear it! And then you are going to want to own it!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant New Artist and Album!.......2006-02-15

My friend recently introduced me to the music of Eric Kamen and I love it! She made me listen to his song "Moshi Moshi" that is on this album and I was hooked. The great percussion beats along with the guitar that has a latin/spanish feel were just a great mix that pulled me in. Now that I have the whole CD, I have to praise Kamen even more for his incredible musical talents and creativity. I have yet to hear any other CD that blends so many different instrumental and international sounds together to make something completely unique and beautiful.

If you like world, new age, fusion, instrumental, latin, r&b or international music, you will absolutely enjoy this album and quickly become an Eric Kamen fan as well.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A delicious set of some of the best Blue Note jazz........2000-01-17

Want some of the best jazz around--? Budget impaired, like myself? Fortunately, for us, there's this Blue Note Records collection of the best from favorites like Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, and Grant Green. Now, the powers that be at EMI-Capitol thought to get some sells of this great jazz by packaging it as a "sample this" offering to hip-hoppers/rap ranconteurs. It turns out that they needn't have done so. The various volumes and the box set with Vols 1-4 has some great work like Bobbi Humphrey's "Harlem River Drive" and Herbie Hancock's "Olilloqui Valley". The music, in other words, can really stand alone...I would urge those interested in sampling to listen to these greats not to lift a groove, but to help themselves in learning how to make their own groove....Dig?
