Try not to laugh while you are mortified!.......2007-03-22
If you haven't heard Stephen Lynch, prepare to be shocked, disgusted and laughing your butt off. Stephen's songs start out sweet and melodic and then turn on you like a rabid animal. The tunes are catchy and you may catch yourself singing them in public. Just be careful not to walk around singing "She Gotta a Smile" or you might get hit with a purse! "For the Ladies" is easily the most offensive song on this disc. Provided you have a soul, you will be offended the first time you hear it. After that, it's a song you can't quite get out of your head. All in all, this disc belongs in any comedy or music lovers collection.
another great piece of work.......2007-03-09
If you are a Stephen Lynch fan, this is another great piece of work of his. Just know that, inspite of his great singing voice, his songs wont appeal to everyone. He is talented, and his songs are funny, and look forward to getting more of his work as time goes on. As I said though his music wont appeal to everyone, he is sure to offend some people. I am just not one of those people..........Keith
Pretty Funny..........2007-01-23
I think this CD is pretty funny... I laughed at every track the first time I heard it and some of the tracks the second or third time I when I was playing it for friends.
hilarious!!!!.......2007-01-06
Stephen Lynch is just one of the most clever songwriters ever. From the first song on this album to the last, me and my boyfriend were laughing out loud, rewinding, and playing again. Not only are his songs funny but they are catchy and you want to sing along. Well worth my money.
Great Album - All the Better because it's Live!.......2006-08-17
Stephen Lynch has done several albums, and I purchased this and "A Little Bit Special" (his earlier album), as Amazon was bundling them for a special price.
Of the two, "Superhero" I feel is the superior album, mainly because of the fact that it's recorded live, which I think Comedy albums (regardless of the artist or style) need.
As has been mentioned earlier, this is pretty adult stuff, not because there is tons of swearing, even though it does have a Parental Advisory becuase of language, but rather because of the subject matter, which is funny even if it is a bit dark (grin).
If you want to get an introduction to Lynch, I would reommend this Album first, then move on to other pieces in his catalog.

A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06
Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D
Good overview.......2007-04-18
Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.
Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08
I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!
Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02
Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.
Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04
The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.
Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.
Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.
This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.
If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Brian McKnight still works his patented platinum midtempo grooves on his sixth album, but here he turns the beat around a bit and mixes it up with some new partners. For strange bedfellows, check out "My Kind of Girl," a collaboration with Justin Timberlake. The teaming of the Prince of Pimple Pop and the veteran R&B star is a head-scratcher on paper, but it sure sounds sweet as they wrap their voices around a gentle acoustic-tinged track that floats with effortless ease. McKnight, who handles most production, writing, and instrumental chores, rocks out on the title track and throws down with Nate Dogg on the pulsating "Don't Know Where to Start." It all proves that McKnight can create make-out music for housewives and homeboys alike. --Amy Linden
Customer Reviews:
A little weaker than the last but still good.......2006-12-17
Brian Mcknight returned with his sixth CD titled Superheo. The CD features more of the quiet storm balladary Mcknight is known for, however on this CD it begins to drag a little bit. The first single Love Of My Life may be one of the strongest songs, Brian has ever recorded vocally. Love Of My Life" is sung entirely in falsetto and he hits an E5; which is beyond the range of most tenors.) The transition between his falsetto and head voice is also smoother than most singer's in the game. The other two standout songs were My Kinda Girl feat. Justin Timberlake and What's Gonna Be. My Kinda Girl had Justin & Brian doing an excllent tag team R&B duet while What's Gonna Be gave us a smooth jazz cafe type feel. This wasn't Mcknight's best, however it is one of the weakest in his catlog.
Always loved Brian McKnight @}->---.......2006-09-10
Brian McKnight still remains one of my all time favourite male R&B singers. He's not only good to look at, but his voice is classy and beautiful and his music is romantic, cool and tight. He is so talented yet so underrated, but to his fans, he doesn't often disappoint.
While I've had this cd since it's release, it did take one or two listens to before I really decided I loved it. It's full of great songs and there is no bad one here. In particular I love, Don't Know Where To Start, Everything, For You and the title track Superhero. I never get tired of listening to him, and I never get tired of this cd. It's beautiful and a must for all Brian McKnight fans. I really love it and I feel that it's one of his best.
sounds smooth.......2004-04-23
Love the different song arrangements. The man is talented gotta admit it.
This cd grew on me.......2003-11-15
I remember when I first picked up this album I didn't think much of it. After listening to it a couple times it really started to get into my head.
This cd has a good mix of fast tunes (Groovin tonight, Don't know where to start) and vintage Brian mcknight ballads (Still, Everything).
His collaborations with Justin T, the St. Lunatics, and Nate Dogg were all really well done and are sure to get you up and dancing.
My kinda girl, Love of my life, Everything, and Biggest part of me were my favourite songs on this cd.
It may take a few listens but this cd is full of great songs.
A good release for Mr McKnight.......2003-05-07
his release is a step back i believe for Mr McKnight. Some songs are appealing while others aren't too shabby.
notable tracks:
-Superhero Prelude: okay its only an intro, but i liked it. Orchestration that builds up the suspense.
-What's It Gonna Be - Good jazzy intro that leads to good chorus
-Superhero - haha! now this is really really different song from most Brian McKnight songs.Strangly enough i found it pretty good
-still - a good ballad with good piano chords, what you'd expect on any Brian Mcknight album
- Biggest part of me - another good ballad to listen to.
-When Will I See you Again - Sad, dark ballad (ft Bebe Winans?) One Of my favourites
-For you - short song but it's pretty good, easy on the eardrum!
As an overall album, it lacks in some ways, but as a long time fan it was good see him release an album with good ballads as usual! :) The dance tracks Don't know where to start,
Groovin Tongiht and Superhero (even though i liked it) seem to be out of place. It's album that any Brian mcknight fan would want.

A Must For Superhero Fans.......2006-09-29
What more could you ask for than seventies rock anthems telling the story of Peter Parker/Spiderman complete with narration by Stan Lee. I would spend an evening listening to this, than watching either of the recent movies. Just don't make me choose between the 70's live action show and this. That my friends would be a tough call.
Two of my favorite tracks are "New Point of View," about Peter discovering his new powers and abilities, and "No One's Got A Crush On Peter," about the struggles of the superhero who still struggles with the problems of teenage life.
A true classic.......2005-12-02
Spider-Man: Rock Reflections Of A Superhero (1975)
INTRODUCTION:
From his origin in the sixties onward, Spider-Man has consistently been one of the most popular superheroes ever conceived. It was in the middle of the seventies that one of the most interesting Spider-Man items ever released hit the market. Marvel's Agile Ann Picardo offered Lifesong records the opportunity to record an album about the exploits of Spidey. Lifesong was still relatively unknown, but the label jumped at the chance to create the album. Among the players recruited for the album were members of Lifesong's up and coming classic progressive rock group, Crack The Sky, as well as the folk rock group Jonah, the folk rock duo Cashman And West, who had once produced recordings for Jim Croce, and Manhattan Transfer member Marty Nelson. Many other musicians also participated in this project. Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee also provided narration between the album's musical tracks. How did the end result measure up! Read on for my review of Spider-Man: Rock Reflections Of A Superhero.
OVERVIEW:
Spider-Man: Rock Reflections Of A Superhero was released in 1975 on Lifesong Records. The band who performed on the album, of various musicians, was dubbed Hero. The album's musicians include Joe Macre, Jerry Marotta, Joey D'Amico, Tom Rossetter, Michael Clemens, Jim Griffiths, Rob Stevens, Don Schloss, Terence P. Minogue, Rick Witkowski, David Sanborn, Paul Rolnick, Ray Dahrouge, Marty Nelson, Geni Sackson, Bob Gengo, Mike Gregorio, Tina Kaplan, William Kirkland, Vincent Lafata, and Tommy West. Stan Lee provided narration between the musical tracks, and Spider-Man comic book artist John Romita Sr. created the cover art.The album's tracklist consists of the songs High Wire, Peter Stays And Spider-Man Goes, Square Boy, New Point Of View, Spider-Man, No One's Got A Crush On Peter, Gwendolyn, Count On Me, Doctor Octopus Part One, Doctor Octopus Part Two, A Soldier Starts To Bleed, and Time Will Show Me The Way. Narration from Stan Lee comes between the musical tracks.
REVIEW:
As a Spider-Man fan, I was intrigued the moment I heard about this album's existence. Obviously, being born in 1984, I'm not one of those people who got to hear it back at the 1975 time of release. But I bought a copy on CD, eager to see what it would have to offer. And I must say, the end result is priceless. NO, this is not an album for everyone, as many of the other reviews will tell you. It's an acquired taste. But if you can get into it, this album will give you plenty of thrills, with its radically-diverse musical stylings. Stan Lee's narration also adds something to the album. Read on for a track-by-track analysis of the album's musical tracks.
-SIDE A-
-High Wire: The album starts off with an excellent, vintage seventies track. The sort of "theatrical rock" sound that the track has is timeless, sounding like something you'd expect from Meat Loaf, or something you'd expect to hear on the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack. Combine that with lyrics about the life of Spider-Man, and it's a win-win situation! This is a very good song, and it's definitely one of the strongest here. It was a good starting cut to use.
-Peter Stays And Spider-Man Goes: On this track, the band slows things way down, serving up a track that is mostly acoustic and melodic in its execution. Crack The Sky's members participated heavily on this album, and this song sounds like it could have just as easily been released as one of their songs. The melodic piece deals with Peter Parker's mixed feelings about his role as Spider-Man. Combine great lyrics and great melodies, and you've got another winner.
-Square Boy: Here's one of the more irregular cuts on the album. Essentially, it's an acapella, with backing piano being the only instrumentation. If you've ever listened to any sort of acapella music before, you'll know what to expect from this song. Essentially, this one tells the story about how Peter Parker goes from loser to superhero. Despite its irregularity, it's a true classic.
-New Point Of View: Distinctly seventies pop is the best way to describe this tune. Here, we have a song from the eyes of Peter Parker ever he gets his superpowers and discovers the joys of webslinging over the city. The classic seventies pop sound works great here. Definitely a worthwhile listen.
-Spider-Man: This is the only song on this album that was released as a single, and appropriately so, as it is one of the strongest songs present. It's a seventies-style pop-rocker with electronic-sounding synths thrown into the mix. It sounds like a mix of Jackson Browne's instrumentation and Warren Zevon style vocals. Mixed with the electronic synths, it's one of the catchiest things on the album. It was a fine choice to release this as the album's single.
-BONUS TRACK FOR CD EDITION-
-No One's Got A Crush On Peter: Do you know that seventies pop-rock sound? That distinctly seventies sound that never had existed before, and would never exist again? That's what the band does on this song, in their tale of the everyday hardships of Peter Parker's life. And they do a damn good job of it, too. It's definitely one of my favorite songs on here, and it's a shame on the original vinyl it was nothing more than background music (read the "EDITION NOTES" section at the bottom of the review for more info on that.)
-SIDE B-
-Gwendolyn: Here the album takes a dramatic turn into irregular territory. This is a fifties-style doo-wop tune! It actually sounds very similar to the Penguins classic, Earth Angel, from that era. Definitely a strange way to introduce the character of Gwen Stacy! It's a refreshing change from the seventies-flavored songs most of the albums consist of, but it may be too much of a chance for some of the listeners.
-Count On Me: Here we have melodic pop rock, with horns and keyboards thrown into the mix for good measure. It's essentially Peter Parker pledging himself to Gwen Stacy, letting her know how much he really cares. After that fifties-style misadventure of the previous song, this is a nice change back to the seventies form of music.
-Doctor Octopus Part One: This is part one of a two-part Doctor Octopus medley. Crack The Sky's members participated heavily in the creation of these tracks. The two were originally one big long song with narration sandwiched between on the vinyl, but they are separated on the CD, so you can easily skip where you want to go (smart move.) It has that vintage Crack The Sky progressive seventies rock sound that you know you love. Combine that with an awesome storyline - Peter Parker has a nightmare about Doctor Octopus taking over the world - and it makes things all the more interesting. One of my favorite songs here.
-Doctor Octopus Part Two: After some Stan Lee dialogue between the two tracks, the Doctor Octopus medley continues. Essentially, in this latter installment, Doctor Octopus is holding a rally after he conquers the world, uniting the population against the superheroes. Sound weird? It is, but that just makes me love the song all the more. On the reissue of Crack The Sky's debut album, this song was included as a bonus track - and rightfully so, since it's got that vintage Crack The Sky sound.
-A Soldier Starts To Bleed: This is a slow and somber tune, which beautifully illustrates Peter Parker's internal frustration. The Green Goblin had just murdered Gwen Stacy, pushing him over the edge and into newfound feelings of depression. The acoustic stylings of the songs show this well.
-Time Will Show Me The Way: A good way to end the album. Peter Parker realizes that he must go on as Spider-Man, no matter how rough things may get. Following the slow and depressing feelings of the previous song, this one has an optimistic, uplifting feeling to it. It's an excellent album closer, giving a cliffhanger feeling of sorts - much as the comics must have done for young readers every month back in those days.
OVERALL:
Overall, this album makes for an excellent novelty item for any fan of Spider-Man. If you're expecting something that's totally going to blow you away musically, though, you're not going to find it here. With its uneven and diverse musical styles explored here, this album stands as an acquired taste that not everyone is going to fall in love with instantly. But once it grows on you, it stays with you. Every song is excellent in its own way, and you've gotta love Stan Lee's narration. This here's a blast from the past, and it's worth experiencing at least once.
EDITION NOTES:
This album was out of print for years. And Lifesong did more than reissue it - they revamped it. No One's Got A Crush On Peter, a song that was only used as background music on the original LP due to space restrictions, is presented here in its original uncensored glory. Likewise, every track has been separated, making it easy to jump right where you want to go (this especially comes in handy with the Doctor Octopus track(s), which feature dialogue in between.) There are plenty of added liner notes as well, which make for an interesting read. It's tough to find, but worth checking out if you're a fan of Spider-Man, seventies music, or both.

My kids love it.......2004-02-27
My kids request this CD almost every day and just love it. My son was initially drawn to the songs because he's into Super heroes (batman, spiderman, superman, power rangers) and also thinks pokemon is pretty cool. I get a kick out of Speed Racer, Underdog and Spiderman. I don't know if they are the original songs from the TV shows, but they still bring back the memories.
Listen to samples first.......2000-12-19
I really should have listened to the samples before ordering this one. I was hoping for a compilation of original recordings (like TVT's Television's Greatest Hits), instead I got this really weirdly made "remix" list. Some remixes are better than others (right now I'm listening to the redone "Superman" theme by John Williams, and it doesn't sound too bad), but still, if you are looking for the originals, steer clear of this. I do applaud the people who put this together for trying -- it's just not my cup of tea. This *might* be good for someone 10 or under... just because they might not remember "exactly how it goes" -- but it mattered to me.

another great ska band goes punk.......2003-08-23
i don't know why all ska bands changes from ska to punk pop(for example subb, goldfinger, buck on ine) punk... i love the first record, and the second: solid state 14 and skateboard music. this album [is bad],punk is boring: no guitar catchy riffs, no fast and complex bass lines and no great lyrics as in the first album.
My Superhero...saves us again.......1999-12-30
excellent selection of music. This Ska/rock/punk/pop/ band lays down more yummy cuts! They even do their trademark first track. The first track on this one is channels on the tv being flipped through, where as in Solid State 14, its stations on the radio being flipped through. Excellent music, great fun. skank, rude kids, skank.
it sucked.......1999-10-04
I saw them at warp tour and bought the album.. and it was horrible. I guess live the crowed was so loud i could not hear how bad they were. Not punk, rock, or any thing cool... nothing about skateboarding culture or sound here. avoid it...
i am the king!.......1999-09-22
this cd is totaly awesome, i saw my superhero at a show a few weeks ago in redlands california, i hadn't heard of them up to that point, and all i can say is you've got to buy this cd man! hopefully they'll come play at my highschool since my friend dayna is seducing her favorite super hero, mike!!!! skank ryan skank!!!!

Fun and Funky.......2005-12-18
My whole family, from age 5 to 50, loves to listen to this album! "Jesus is God" is really in your face both musically and lyrically. It's probably my favorite song on the album. Another strong cut is "God is Good". This album isn't going to set the world on fire, but with it's funky music and funky lyrical imagery, it's a lot of fun to listen to.
Amazing!.......2002-04-24
Wow! I've never bought such an amazing album!! The originality and power of every one of Scarecrow and Tinmen's is amazing. If you normally never listen to Christian music, get this CD! (I'm usually not attracted to Christian music at all, but this music is way different.) The preview clips on Amazon don't really do the music justice - try to borrow it from someone if you want to hear what it's like. It's too bad that the CD went out of print - but I think you can still get copies from some websites (or you might get a used copy here.) I don't know why this one went out of print - it's so much better than No Place like Home!
Sound candy........2001-12-27
I'm not sure how to classify these guys: Techno-rap? Alternative-Groove? Technocore? Whatever . . . They're great, anyways. The songs sound good, albeit a little repetitive at times. (I'm thinking here of "The Reason Y".) The production is first rate, while the lyrics are some of the most explicitly Christian on any of my CD's. I mean, not even Bride has a song entitled, "Jesus Is God"! The music, like "God Is Good" and "Bionic Son" really rocks and pounds. The lyrical imagery is intriguing, too: "Batman and Robin, what a duo/y'know, but my God and me can defeat the enemy." COOL! Interestingly, two of the singers from S&T became Catholics a year or so ago which makes them even more intriguing, since 99.9% of CCM is born again, Pentecostal, non-denom, etc. This is a really good CD. My only complaint would be that S&C need to find a definitve sound; they can't sound like they're throwing in everything but the kitchen sink -- that's DC Talk's job!
I listened 10 times in a row !!.......2001-01-12
I heard this group interviewed on the radio and caught just a little of their music. When I purchased the CD I listened to it 8 times in my car and have not been able to stop listening in the last 2 days. I have owned it only 3 days and absolutely love it. It has far exceeded my expectations. I have not done this type of listening in 15 years. The production, writing, music, and lyrics are top rate. Inspirational music that rocks. These guys combine hard rock with melodic acousitcs and a small mix of hip-hop/rap. A unique combination that you can only enjoy. Kudos to Scarecrow and Tinmen. I could not recommned a CD more. When you purchase this CD (not if), ensure you crank up the volume.
This CD is AWSOME!.......2000-07-13
If you liked Scarecrow and Tinmen in concert, you'll love this CD. There are more songs like what they do in concert than No Place Like Home. My favorites are God is Good, Big Mouth (or The Big M), and Superhero. Of course, the rest of the CD is great, too. It all shares a good message with cool music. God has really blessed them with talent and us with great music.

This is a CD you really need for your ska collection.......1999-06-19
This CD is one of the best ska CD's I own. MSh puts together catchy guitar riffs with cool lyrics to make a great CD. It's horn-free and not to hard edged, but they have a sound all of their own. Even my Mom likes it, and if she likes it you will too! Also, this is a tough one to get a hold of, so either get it here or at mysuperhero.com!
These guys are so much fun and so full of talent..........1999-06-19

The best album from this Justice League of Swing!.......2004-03-09
Eight to the Bar is one the longest surviving of all swing bands. Pianist Cynthia Lyon founded the band in the mid-70s, and they've been going strong ever since, through the lean and fat years. Not only have they been going strong, they're better now than ever. This, their most recent album, is the best yet. The line-up is superb, the musicians play perfectly together, and just about every track is a swing dancer's dream. Swing lovers, or people who just love jazz, blues, and R&B, who haven't discovered Eight to the Bar should start right here.
The band (headquartered in Connecticut) plays a real variety of swing, with a strong focus on blues. Boogie woogie is a major part of their sound, but they can also play jazz and soul. Comedy is also a key part of the band's appeal: they have fun with their playing and many of their originals have a wicked sense of humor. Most of the band sings back-up vocals, creating a wonderful unified sound that recalls the Manhattan Transfer.
"Superhero Swinger Undercover" contains mostly originals written by various members of the band. The current line-up is Cynthia Lyon (piano), Collin Tilton (saxophone), Megan Keith (lead vocals), her brother David Keith (drums, percussion), Michael Corsini (bass), and Tommy Whalen (guitar). Most of the songs are written by Cynthia, Collin, Megan, and Tommy.
Here is the wonderful variety of songs you'll find here:
*"Superhero Swinger Undercover." The source of the awesome cover art! Megan Keith wrote and sings this fast-paced jump number guaranteed to exhaust most dancers. The lyrics are funny, and will speak to all those dancers, who (like me) seem to live ordinary lives during the day, but at night transform into oddly dressed swing machines! It's time to save the city with quality music!
*"My Boogie Woogie Hand." Eight to the Bar often performs songs about the business of running a band. This lyric-heavy piece charts the history of the band itself. Cynthia sings it herself, explaining how the band was started by her left hand, "her boogie woogie hand." Obviously, there's some rockin' boogie woogie piano going on here as well.
*"It's a Groove." One of the few covers, but it's one of the best performances on the album. This is a hot-stepping jump number with excellent back-up vocals. The Manhattan Transfer sound is very noticeable, and there's a great sax solo from Collin.
*"Maybe Someday." The songs written by guitarist Tommy Whalen are always very hard-driving blues numbers. This is a great sassy vocal duet between Tommy and Megan very much like the classic song "You're the Boss." Lots of guitar here.
*"Sugar High." Collin and Megan created this one, and it's the jazziest, smokiest piece on the album. It's the definition of `cool,' (but you sure can swing to it), and Collin's sax is some of his best work. Megan's vocal is silky and sexy.
*"My Old Flame." No, this isn't the old standard, but an original soulful ballad from Cynthia. Her vocal is perfectly heartbreaking. There's a bit of a country feel here also.
*"Reptile Man." A good example of the band's wacky, weird humor. Megan wrote and sings this Cajun and Latin-influenced love song about a woman who falls for a snake handler at the zoo. It's creepy and sexy at the same time. The poor girl in the song has some serious issues.
*"The Shelf." Another comic number, this one written by Cynthia. She and Megan sing about a woman whose...uhm...attributes are extremely distracting. ("At the wedding no one pays attention to the bride and groom.")
*"Troubles Drift Away." Another Tommy Whalen original, so it's pure hardcore blues. It's one of my favorites on the album, a slow tempo but very danceable number about sitting at the river to let your troubles drift away... Great organ and rhythm work on this one.
*"Romeo." Cynthia wrote this number, which has the strongest soul inspiration of any piece on the album. The tight vocal work from the whole band help make this a fun one.
*"Skeleton Key." My personal favorite piece, this original from Megan is an incredibly sexy and hypnotic blues dance number. Megan's voice is just a knock-out, and the beat is guaranteed to get a whole roomful of picky dancers swinging hard.
*"I'm My Own Grandpaw." Ah, we had to have a `novelty' number in here somewhere. This is a cover of Ray Stevens's fast-vocal comedy song. Drummer David Keith sings the complex lyrics and plays the spoons, backed by only piano and bass. Not a dance song, but funny nonetheless, and you really get to hear how good a pianist Cynthia is.
*"Set You Free." A live performance of Cynthia's original song. Appropriately enough for the band, the album ends on a song that combines everybody's talents and all the different styles they like to explore. Another of the highlights of the album.
So if you haven't heard them yet, what are you waiting for! A band that's been around for more than 25 years is obviously a group that knows what its doing. And they've never done it better than on this album.
Swingin' Superheroics.......2003-07-03
One of the things that make Eight To The Bar an ongoing ultra-presence in the Neo Swing scene is their complete and utter joy at being performers. Serious performers. Cynthia Lyon has weathered the changing nature of the scene, and various incarnations of this super talented troupe, and she's still having a good time. This idea is given the logical next spin (or should it be flight?) in their brand new CD release "Superhero Swingers Undercover."
The super heroic feat of being part of the swing scene and loving every minute of it (and they don't disguise it) gets its day in the aforementioned title track, and acts as an introduction for "My Boogie Woogie Hand," which gives an explanation for the how and why of the band with tongue in cheek frivolity. Don't pass up a nifty cover of "I'm My Own Grandpaw" and the storytelling mirth of tracks like "Romeo" and the slightly naughty "The Shelf."
Cynthia, whose mutant powers include piano, organ, and vocals, is joined by her own Justice League in the spectacular vocals of Michael Corsini (who plays bass), Megan Keith and Tom Whalen, the saxophonic styling of Collin Tilton, and the percussion mastery of David Keith. The CD case is just fun to look at, with its comic book layout and word ballooned lyrics, surrounded by pictures of a band having way too much fun for their own good. Eight to the Bar continues with the sort of stuff that made the band work in the first place, and if you're not just a fair weather friend to the swing scene, climb on in the phone booth and put on your costume, too.
Of comic books and addictions.......2003-06-23
Remember when you were young and you would wait, often impatiently and certainly with great anticipation, for the next issue of your favorite comic book to hit the newsstand (perhaps the Archie & Jughead crowd, or Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and the rest of the Justice League . . . or maybe it was Little
Dot, Nancy or the other characters in that group who spoke few words) . . . and when you finally got it (for all of what, 10 or 12 cents?) . . you'd joyfully take it home, all crisp and brand new and colorful . . . and you'd steal off to your special place, perhaps your bedroom or a tree-house or some other special hideaway . . . then crawl up in your own little world and dive totally into the world on those pages . . . I mean totally, devouring with your eyes everything - the art, the colors, the words (all the words - the "conversation" bubbles, the "thought" bubbles, the scene descriptions at the top of the panels . . . everything that was written on the page). We'd delight in the layout, the plot, the characters and all their little personal quirks, the entire package. And although each page was in itself a full sensory and visceral adventure, the turn to the next page brought something even better than the last and . . . well, it was a simple, singular experience that I think we all had when we were young . . . and it seems, as I remember, that we were never disappointed with a new issue. Never! In fact we would tell our friends that "This issue is the best one so far . . . . and then with the next month and the next issue . . . "No, wait, THIS one is the best so far". And it was often the case. But we still saved the old ones, under the bed, in the closet, in a box, in a drawer . . . and reread them often, because it was fun. . . and there was always the possibility of discovering something that we somehow might have missed the time before
Okay, now let's move that concept up a little to our being teenagers and the same thing with buying record albums instead of comic books. We couldn't wait for the next album by our favorite band. And sometimes we got a great one, a classic album . . . but sometimes, well . . . we didn't. Our expectations had changed as we got older. We'd become more critical. More demanding. Damn, if we were going to spend $2.99 on an album - the whole thing better be good. Often it took a half dozen or more times of listening (or tolerating) before we got "used" to some of the filler songs beyond the hits that were popular. Sometimes we just had to accept that there were maybe only two or three good songs on a particular album and the rest was crap that we would never listened to. I think the only bands who consistently put out albums filled with ALL good songs were the Beatles and the Moody Blues. But, I digress.
Here's my two cents about Eight-to-the-Bar: Their CDs are the closest thing that I've come across that mimic the experience I had in the early 1960s when I got a new comic book. (If you already own a previous CD from them you know that there is the sense of anticipation while waiting for the next in the series) An ETTB CD is something to delight in. Something that is special. Something that one intuitively knows will be good . . . no. great, even before pulling the plastic wrapper off! And, the extra bonus with their CDs is that all the songs, every single one of them, are good. There is no having to accept junk filler or substandard songs just to get one or two decent songs.
Superhero Swinger Undercover, their latest, is absolutely WONDERFUL! The band should be very proud of their accomplishment. I'm proud for them. The arrangements, the lyrics, the overall "mood", the chemistry between the band members, the sequencing of cuts, the artwork, the whole experience is SUPER. Like their previous CDs, it is a delightful compilation of traditional swing, some jazz, some R&B and some `hard` blues - all of which are incredibly tight and well delivered. Additionally, ETTB has a wonderful knack for writing what I consider to be some of the most clever and fun lyrics of any band . . . a lot of intelligent, witty or tongue-in-cheek lines that cause me to chuckle every time I hear them.
Like the other Eight-to-the-Bar CDs I already own (Hey Sailor, Beat me Rocking, Behind the Eight Ball), I know I will listen to "Superhero" over-and-over-and-over again . . . In fact, I have made compilation tapes from their previous CDs that I use when I workout or run. That swing tempo is absolutely perfect for maintaining a 5.5 - 6.5 mph running speed (as well as the motivation). There are a number of cuts on "Superhero" that I will now be adding to my mix.
Bottom Line:
This is a GREAT band, with a fabulous style, contagious energy and incredibly tight delivery. If you don't own any of their CDs yet, you should buy at least one (Superhero Swinger Undercover would be a good start). Trust me, you won't be sorry! And I would almost guarantee that once you own one of their CDs, it's just a matter of time before you will own all the others. Then, just like me, you will wait with impatience and anticipation for yet the next one.
