Sweet Soul Treasures.......2000-12-13

I was elated when I first ran across this CD some years ago. It contains songs, I thought, I would never hear again. I used to own many of these songs on vinyl back in the day, many of which are now rare collectables. Of the hundreds of CD's I own, this is still one of my favorites. Sweet Soul is my main music interest and this CD, in my opinion, is one of the sweetest. I encourage all sweet soul aficianados, definitely pick this one up. I gaurantee you will be just as elated.

this compilation of oldies, notations, dramatics, etc is fabulous i enjoyed every song on this cd. i would strongly urge serious listeners who enjoy oldies to make this their next purchase. if you enjoy oldies like, dells, temprees, manhattans, madlads, five stairsteps this is the one one cd that you will like that will impress you. happy listening.

Styles & Pharoahe Monch's collabration track the "Life" was one of my favourite songs of 2002. The Ayatollah produced single found on Style's album "Gangster & A Gentleman" (2002) is a memorable track. Originally this track came out on "Soundbombing 3". On Style's album its actually a bonus track found at the end. I like Pharoahe Monch as a lyricist on this track he sings rather then verses and delivers an impressive chorus: "My life is all I have My rhymes, my pen, my pad And I done made it through the struggle...", Styles lyrics are on point, and toghether they drop a track to remember. Recommend getting this single or the album if you have not yet copped it.

Perfectly comfortable on the street........2005-05-04

I found this by accident. Actually, make that "happy accident." It never ceases to amaze me how much of what I like has its roots in Barcelona, and this group is no exception. The whole time I was listening to it I was thinking "where have I heard this before..." Then I read the liner notes and realized "Barcelona." The CD captures the essence of what it is to walk through Barrio Gotico, down the Ramblas, or though barrio chino at night. A little edgy, a little out there. Perfectly comfortable on the street.

After a awesome debut album (2002), I wondered if they could keep up the same level of brilliance in their second CD. To my delight, they did! My record/CD collection is fast approaching 1,000 entires, and I would place anything Brazzaville easily into the top 100.

Fine wine and cigars at night.......2002-01-13

Perhaps best known to the public for their haunting ska-raggae piece "Old man Dub" currently being used by the Ford Motor Company for the 2002 Thunderbird commercial ("The race"), Brazzaville's music hits at many levels.
I was initially drawn to the piece used in the commercial, being a great fan of reggae that features a horn section and bought the CD expecting more of the same in the album. I actually was quite surprised at the breadth of the music. To call it jazz or ska or reggae doesn't quite capture the full richness of the music. "Air Mail" and "Foreign Disaster days" do have that jazzy feel to them - but a very hip modern jazzy feel - like it belongs in a South Beach Cafe on a Friday night. Precise guitar work that betrays a very Les Paul heritage. "Sandman" & "Casa Batllo" takes on a more samba or Cuban Jazz flow with crisp keyboard work. While "Boeing" & "4am Osaka" have heavier guitar work with a rock and roll edge. It is definately and interesting journey - song to song with enough variety to make the listener pay attention to the music.

A Sneak peak into the Music that influenced 4Hero.......2007-01-22

Primarily known for their `intelligent' take on Drum'N'Bass/Breakbeat....4-Hero have been asked to collate some of their musical influences & Inspirations. Rather surprisingly it eschews dance/breakbeat music & focuses on the Jazzier side of things. Moving smoothly via Funk ("Sly and the family Stone"), through to Hard bop, Fusion Jazz ("Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis"), and stopping off via smouldering ("Debbie Taylor, Nancy Wilson, Syreeta Wright")...there's nothing here for those expecting a continuation of 4-Hero's lively breakbeat albums. But there is something more important, in that there are some real nuggets of lost Soul & Jazz here, that will delight those knowing what to expect here.....and the mixing is unobtrusive & intelligently handled. But it should be carefully noted, that this is not a traditional 4 Hero album, and merely compiles a (admittedly stunning) collection of rare/obscure tracks that have influenced the band (if you listen carefully, you listen you can hear how some of these songs went on to influence their intelligent Drum n Bass/Breakbeat sound). And if you're prepared to hunt around for a copy of the mixed limited 2-Cd version, this makes for an album that's a very worthy purchase.

Try this on for size.......2003-09-03

For anyone considering Verve Remixed 2, I recommend this instead. Smashing stuff!
