Classic country - pure Patsy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Every song from the first half of her career.......2006-10-19

Please note that this is a re-issue of a long-out-of print double CD (Crazy dreams - the Four Star years) with exactly the same track listing but different packaging.

Patsy's recording career lasted from 1956 to 1963 and was divided between two record labels - Four Star and Decca, the switch occurring in 1960. Most of her success came with Decca but this collection focuses on the Four Star recordings, for which this is the best ever released, containing every song she ever recorded for the label, superbly re-mastered. There are extensive liner notes including session details for these recordings, even including an outline of her career with Decca. The style of Patsy's music on Four Star was solidly traditional country with none of the strings that were used on her Decca recordings.

Patsy's only hit during her time with Four Star was Walking after midnight, a song that Patsy later re-recorded for Decca. Part of the reason for Patsy's limited success (and the main reason that she eventually left Four Star) was that she was only allowed to record songs for which the record label held the publishing copyright. Despite this limitation, there are many excellent songs here.

Apart from Walking after midnight, the most famous original song here is the classic ballad, Just out of reach, a song that has often been covered by country, pop and soul singers. Now, why wasn't Patsy's recording a hit? Among the other great songs here are Pick me up on your way down, A poor man's roses (later covered by Reba McEntire, a huge fan of Patsy's music), In care of the blues and Come on in.

Towards the end of Patsy's contract with Four Star, the label relented and she was able to record some other songs including covers of Lovesick blues, Life's railway to heaven and Just a closer walk with thee. It was too late. Patsy moved to Decca and suddenly became a major star by recording some of the best original songs available.

If you are new to Patsy's music, I recommend that you should first look for a collection of her Decca music including such classics as I fall to pieces, Crazy and She's got you. If you want to explore further, you will enjoy this.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mommy, I'm scared..........2002-07-21

This is dark electro-dub, very noisy, very dark. If you like Scorn, Main, Ice and (of course) earlier Techno Animal stuff, this will be right up your alley. Fans of REAL industrial music (i.e. Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Esplendor Geometrico (hope I spelled that right)) and the Invisible Records crowd should also dig this. A horror soundtrack for late night S&M, perhaps?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Digital Hardcore done very well.......2003-02-05

Digital Hardcore is a funny genre: you either love it or hate it.

As a DHC enthusiast, I know it can be hit or miss sometimes, trying to find a great DHC CD. I started on ATR, moved on to Alec Empire and Bomb 20, and now I have found COTGV. This is a great album with some VERY awesome tracks. "Caucasian Deathmask" is the perfect opener and "Substance X" is a phenomenal track.

COTGV is great entry into the DHC universe and for those of you who like the musical stylings of ATR and Alec Empire but hate ATR's screeching female and Alec's vocals, COTGV has great music and no vocals.

3 out of 5 stars Chilled out deathbeats.......2001-09-19

Yeah, ATR... great. The whole reason I bought this cd was for the Techno Animal additional production, and boy, does it show. While his own efforts of illbient are a little hard to swallow due to total bleakness, the hardcore asthetic livens things up to at least a few degress above absolute zero. Sounds somewhat like icecubes being ground up in an enormous machine that tears them apart, and somehow reassembles them, leading one to suspect that they have more icecubes somewhere in the machine. To wit, the best parts of the album arrive on Low-Tech predator, when the crunchy guitars of ATR combine with a decaying siren effect, producing something you might actually remember after popping out the disk.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Something Special Passed This Way.......2005-03-27

This is a joyous collection of songs from the wonderful Deanna Durbin. Her golden voice saved Universal in the 1930's and as she grew into the lovely star of several fine light comedies in the early 1940's she only got better. Her voice was beautiful, a drink of cold water on a scorchingly hot day. This 20 track compilation has not only some of her best songs, but that beautiful shot of her on the cover, a face filled with joy and a flowing dress that reminds us of what was once great about music and movies, and spring.

Many fond film memories are represented here and while not every song we would love to hear Deanna sing is included, enough of them are to make it worth your while. There are light and fun songs and songs of love and nostalgia. The sound quality of this English import is good if not spectacular and a decent sound system will help tweek it to your liking. Every Durbin fan will have their favorites among these beautifully rendered popular and classical numbers.

My personal favorite here would be "My Own." But with songs like More and More, Love is All, Any Moment Now and Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year to choose from, it's much like dipping your hand into the candy jar; you're bound to pull out something good. My only complaint would be that "It's Dreamtime" from the film "I'll Be Yours" is missing from this one. Other than that, it's just a great CD to own.

Deanna Durbin was indeed The Last Rose of Summer, but fortunately for us, it is a rose that never fades.

3 out of 5 stars These are NOT their greatest hits...........2004-10-12

PLEASE don't buy this as a curious music lover just starting to explore their career. Their greatest hits album contains ACOUSTIC live versions of Radar Love and When The Lady Smiles, NOT the originals. What were they thinking? It also includes some painfully mediocre tracks from their cover album, Love Sweat. And if you're going to pick the best songs off of Face It, WHY would you choose Angel and Johnny Make Believe? What about Legalize Telepathy?? Bah. Gotta See Jane is a great cover, though.

4 out of 5 stars history of pop music on 1 cd.......2002-02-05

Formed in 1960 and still rollin' strong in 2002.this cd gives an excellent overview of their career and is particularly interesting 'cos you can see how the group's music style evovlves and changes over the years always setting a trend or trying to follow it. from mersey beat to acid rock to psychedelic songs, even sometimes jazzy ones, loads of straightforward hardrock:their No1 sellingpoint. including "When the Lady smiles" [...]
Even the other dinosaur band from the '60 ,Rolling Stones dig the Eaaring, you know? They sometimes soundcheck by playing"Radar Love" Thumbs up for this living legend group, who unfortunately are so succesfull back home (their acoustic theatretour sells out since 1993!)that they don't yet feel like touring the US They were asked to open for Deep Purple in 1996 but refused,we can only guess why.So visit Amsterdam, The Netherlands and see a show of one of the best livebands around.
