Where's Kind Of A Drag?.......2002-05-20
I bid on this one and purchased it based on the song listing provided. Kind Of A Drag by The Buckinghams is NOT ON THIS CD no matter what the song listing says! Even the photo of the CD cover does not have it listed. Only is the actual song listing on the sight the one that lists this missing song. Bummer!
it's a happening.......2001-12-04
all the original songs in stereo
Little bit of soul actually sounds dated for '67 should be like '64
Soul Man,the great screetching sound(the blues brothers did a version of soul man)
Incense and Peppermints-what do the words mean?groovy man, cool psychedelic tune
Gimme Some Lovin'-another 'soul' song i think its steve winwood in the band
I Think We're Alone Now-another tommy james hit, children behave!
Happy Together, the turtles big hit that everyone was singing that year, classic pop style harmonies
Windy i used to think it was wendy for years, but another fine harmony by the association
Groovin' the rascals slow summertime ballad
the Letter- i think the 1st song to have airplane sound effects
Respect hmmm aretha's sock it to me anthem
if you want to hear some songs from '67 this is a good way to know them for the year, they were all popular and had good pop crafted tunes that are easy to listen to ,you still hear them on oldies stations as a regular playlist.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent collection of songs........2006-02-01
Being that I was born in the mid-eighties, I did not have the priveledge of growing up listening to music of this sort. When I found this CD among my dad's collection I decided to give it a listen because I recognized some of the songs. I'm very glad I did!
I greatly enjoy almost all of the songs, in particular The Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" by the Tokens.
The rest of the songs are top-notch "oldies" as well, easily recognizable classics. The only song I don't really care for is "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" by Jan & Dean, though it is still an okay song.
Overall, I would certainly recommend this CD... when you find one both a father and a daughter can easily enjoy together, it must be good.
Shame on the KID who put this one together.......2002-11-18
This is one BAD example of the music of this decade. First, the 60s started on JAN.one but I guess that dosen't count!
If your looking to get a handle on where R+R (all) comes from this turkey an't it.
I know all of the songs!.......2002-01-23
I hate compilation CD's that are supposed to be the best of something but manage to be the best of whatever singles the producer had lying around in the backseat of his car. This CD, however, is what it claims to be. I've never seen a compilation album with so many hits and so many recognizeable tunes. All of these songs are fun to listen to and the few songs you may not recognize are catchy 60-ish sounding riffs anyway. This is, by far, the most versatile CD I own.
A gorgeous CD.......2000-06-23
Hello. It's a real nice collection most of all because it includes some artist i thought I never heard again. Some of them as The Kinks, The Vogues or Jan and Dean aren't easy to find in some other collections. The sound is excelent and the artists are well selected. Congratulations.

Customer Reviews:
Rock & Roll in 1969 course number 101--even if they were limited to ten songs.......2006-08-14
This CD has a great selection of ten songs that were really big in 1969. The sound is great; and there are great photos of some of the groups represented on this CD. The liner notes lack any extensive essay; but who cares? You'll be transported back in time to 1969 with some great rock nostalgia. My only gripe is that this CD series limits the CD tracks to ten.
Another reviewer writes that Tommy James & The Shondells shouldn't have been picked twice since there was only room for ten songs on this CD. I think he has a good point; but I liked both "Crimson And Clover" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion" anyway. They are somewhat laid back, quasi-psychedelic songs that you can still hear occasionally on certain radio stations playing '60s music.
There are several different types of songs on this CD; and that's really a great plus! "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" has an awesome beat and is still sometimes played at sports events. "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies represents that bubblegum type of '60s song that is very catchy even if it's not the greatest music ever written. "Build Me Up Buttercup" has a terrific, almost triumphant sounding musical arrangement this is completely infectious; and "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" has a certain dramatic element to it that starts the CD off on a very strong note.
In short, if you have to pick just one CD to cover the year 1969, this is a great choice. It's not as comprehensive as I would like it to be because Rhino limited the "Billboard Rock & Roll" series to ten songs each. I recommend this CD for fans of music from the late '60s and people who just want to know a little bit more about some of the great hits put out in 1969.
Billboard Top Rock'n' Roll Hits 1969.......2006-02-26
This series of discs are a nice addition to anyones 60s library. I don't know if I am the only one who's noticed but the 1969 disc has changed. I bought mine originally back in the early 1990's. Some of the songs on my edition are different. I bought mine at one of those record store chains back then. My tracks are 1. Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In (5th Dimension), 2. Sugar, Sugar (The Archies), 3. Dizzy (Tommy Roe), 4. I can't get next to you (The Temptations), 5. Crimson and Clover (Tommy James and the Shondells, 6. Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye (Steam), 7. Hair (The Cowsills), 8. Build me up Buttercup (The Foundations), 9. Time of the Season (The Zombies), and 10. Get Together (The Youngbloods). As you can see there are some different songs on mine. I don't know what happened but perhaps on the first editions of these CD's they had some of the chart information wrong and thats why they changed. Who knows. At any rate I would recommend buying these CD's. They make a wonderful collection.
1969 Top Rock rocks.......2005-09-23
This CD with the top pop hits of 1969 set the mood for our work on a 1969 Porsche 912. It's a lot of fun.
Billboard top hits of 1969.......2005-05-05
My mom loves this music, and when she introduced it to me, I really liked it, too. The best songs on here are Dizzy, Sugar Sugar, and Build Me Up Buttercup. Now my goal is to collect the whole 60's billboard series.
Oliver.......2005-04-12
We get to enjoy the late Oliver singing Good Morning Starshine enough to make this collection worth while. The little man with a lisp was perfect for this song.

Customer Reviews:
This is a KILLER collection.......2006-11-10
When you listen to this, you cannot help but say to yourself "how incredible the talent roster was for this record label". Not only did you have this very special array of vocalists but, for the most part, it was the same house band playing on all of these memorable songs.
Stax will always have their nemesis, Motown, but they should not be considered competitors. Both labels were great yet they were apples and oranges, completely different. Motown was pretty and melodic while Stax was funky and dirty. Stax also had a much more muscular sound, musically, so their house musicians got a lot more accolades. I enjoy Motown but I love Stax!
There is no need to talk about song highlights since these are all classic hits. The nice thing here is that Stax gave you variety. You have funk, you have duets, you have love gone bad, you have man hating female vocalists, you have bluesman, you have thumping bass and greasy guitar, you have killer horn sections, you got Jean Knight singing "Mr Big Shot"...this has everything...pretty, hard, loud, soft etc.
For the Stax fanatic, you will know all the songs but most people are not fanatics they are simply just loooking for a great compilation. If that is you, you will say to yourself "I did not know all of these great artists and songs came from the same label".
This cd works on many levels. It is a great compilation of classic soul songs, it satisfies the hard core collector who wants all of these tunes, it operates as a GREAT party cd/driving cd and lastly, it is a piece of history that showcases how the South interpreted soul.
If you like this then there is a part II with slightly more obscure tunes, a lot funkier and bluesier, yet just as satisfying.
DO NOT BE FOOLISH, BUY THIS!
Keep your Motown, I'll take Stax.......2005-10-29
When all my friends were digging Motown I was digging Otis and Johnny and Sam and Dave and Eddie and Carla and so on and so on.
Motown is good. It's black folks making music for white folks, but Stax was black folks and white folks making music for folks who like their R&B stripped down and basic and raw. There never was and never will be a singer better than Otis Redding. There will never be a back up band better than Booker T and the MGs or the Bar Kays.
Stax (an amalgam of Stewart and Axton the founders) and the affiliated Volt label put out the best ever music. It stands the test of time. It was a moment in time that was brief but golden. This album is just a sample but if it peeks your interest, and if you love soul music, it will, then go from here and appreciate Otis Redding and Johnnie Taylor and Eddie Floyd and all the great talents that passed through the Stax/Volt studios and came under the guiding inflence of the legendary Steve Cropper and company.
Funky R&B @ it's best.......2003-12-20
I love R&B music of the 60s and 70s. Although I live in Memphis, I have always enjoyed Motown music the most and never bothered to study the Stax music made right here in Memphis. Wow! The body of Stax records is incredible and it's interesting to listen to this music and compare to Motown's music. The sounds are both great but very different. I strongly recommend this album and encourage you to listen and compare to the writers and musicians from Motown. It competes very favorably.
GOLDEN YEARS OF SOUL.......2003-04-22
Immerse yourself in the gorgeous Stax sound from the golden years of soul! Every one of these 20 tracks is a gem, from Sam And Dave's opening number to Isaac Hayes' shimmering Theme from Shaft (1971). Eddie Floyd's Knock On Wood has been much covered, for example by Amii Stewart in the late 1970s, while Mr Big Stuff, also from 1971, is the only track of Jean Knight's besides her later 1980s hit My Toot Toot that I'm familiar with. And what a voice and attitude she has! The instrumental hit Green Onions is well known to all, as is Otis Redding's classic Dock Of The Bay. Little known classics include Mel & Tim's Starting All Over Again and In The Rain by The Dramatics, the latter with thunder and rain sound effects. My favourites on this essential album include The Staple Singers' addictive Respect Yourself and I'll Take You There, a delicious marriage of gospel and soul. The Stax sound was a bit more rootsy than Motown, but the melodies were just as beautiful. This precious music just improves with age.
Love (of Soul) Keeps Them Together.......2000-02-24
The Stax/Volt story has two acts: the first, when the label was run by Atlantic Records and featured the royalty of Southern soul (Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Carla Thomas, Booker T. & The MGs) and act two, when Atlantic took its share of the label's masters and, after a short period of continued success, the label faded away.
The reunion of one of popular music's richest libraries occurred some years later. "Top Of The Stax" becomes a one-disc, 20-year joyride of classic R&B from the label's first #1 (Booker T & The MG's groovin' "Green Onions") to its last (Issac Hayes' sweeping signature song, "Theme From Shaft.") Along the way, you hear from father Rufus Thomas (the salacious "Push and Pull") and daughter Carla (the sweet "B-A-B-Y"). Johnny Taylor shows up with two ceritified gold hits, the hard-hitting "Who's Making Love" and the bouncy "Cheaper To Keep Her." The Dramatics and the Soul Children chime in with two Quiet Storm ballads, and Little Milton slaps the blues with the R&B Top 10 "That's What Love Will Make You Do." You'll know these songs; they've been covered by every rock n' roll bad boy from Mick Jagger to Billy Idol to the Blues Brothers. But nothing beats the originals heard here. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
1962 one of the great years in rock .......2005-07-28
Billboard has many great rock n roll hit compilations, but this is one of my favorites. Green Onions is a great instrumental hit, Duke of Earl is a timeless classic from doo wop, and Peppermint Twist Part 1 and the Locomotion were two of the most popular dances that year. All in their original versions!
A good CD despite having only 10 songs - but BUYER BEWARE!.......2005-01-25
In 1988/9 Rhino introduced its superb "Top Rock'n'Roll Hits" (1955-1974) series featuring 20 years of music on 20 CDs at 10 songs per year / per disc. (Hey, neat-o!)
Then in 1993 Rhino reissued the discs in the subset spanning 1960-1969 thus creating two different versions of each in the process. Because these discs are available via Amazon Marketplace, who knows which ones you'll get if you buy them used! If this is important to you, be sure to ask the seller(s) before placing your order(s).
The most obvious visual differences between the two editions are the song titles on both the front covers and the actual CDs. The 1988/9 editions feature mixed-case titles. The 1993 editions feature uppercase titles.
The 1993 editions also have the songs listed on the covers in the same order in which they appear on the discs. The 1988/9 editions list the songs in an almost random order which can be very frustrating while the disc is being played.
The song selections are also different; some moreso than others. For 1962 only track 1 was changed.
1988 (1) The 4 Seasons, "Big Girls Don't Cry"
1993 (1) Booker T. & The MG's, "Green Onions"
In this case, I definitely prefer the 1993 edition because "Green Onions" is just so friggin' awesome! It's interesting that Rhino decided to swap out a song about crying with a song about onions. If it had been called "White Onions" there'd be no way those girls could hold back their tears no matter how big they are.
[Note: To my knowledge, the CDs spanning 1955-1959 and 1970-1974 have not been revised. One may also surmise that Rhino believes rock-n-roll died with the advent of disco since the title used for the discs spanning 1975-on-up is simply "Top Hits" - not to be confused, of course, with Rhino's other, similar series, "Top Pop Hits".]
Stingy, stringy, stingy.......2004-11-03
Once again, we have 10 measly songs, all good ones. They were hits in 1962; I remember them well; I was there. They touched me. If you care about the chronology of hit songs, the times they represent, buy this CD. I just don't know why they don't charge $2-$3 more and double the number of songs on the CD. I can name 10 more just like them from 1962 but I won't bore you further. Four stars this time for too few songs.
doo-wop doo-wop.......2002-06-30
Green Onions the cool hammond organ sound, one reason why i learned to play the keys
Duke Of Earl (before rap)
Soldier Boy the saxophone sendup harmony
Sheila tommy roe's buddy holly sound
Peppermint Twist-did you see joey d on the pbs doo-wop&pop special?
Locomotion written by carol king but i like the grand funk version better
The Wanderer hey its Dion's bad boy song
Breaking Up Is Hard to do, the 1st version by neil sedaka doo-wop style, great harmonies neil multi tracked
Johnny Angel a pleasing pop sound but does it try to hard for a dream?
Palisades Park a summer hit for the amusement park of that time
good listening in the car while driving
A Variety of Classics.......1998-06-30
All these hits appear in their original versions with great sound quality.

An Interesting Group of Songs.......2006-11-15
When you're looking for that one particlular 60's song, this series isn't too bad. I bought this CD for "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay", but was pleasantly surpised to get "Chain of Fools", "Green Tambourine" and "The Horse" which is a song my band used to play in the 70's.
1968 rock .......2005-07-28
this is another great billboard rock n roll CD. There were all different types of music that year, like soul and bubblegum. Here we have the tight instrumental the Horse, the wild song Mony Mony, and one hit wonder group the Lemon Pipers with Green Tambourine. All original versions!
Classic Pop Hits.......1998-06-30
All original versions of 1968 mega hits. Just try to find "Yummy Yummy Yummy" and "Green Tambourine" on another CD!

Review #1.......2006-03-15
This is a very good CD. I enjoy the music and I am glad I ordered it.
changing times.......2002-06-30
The Name Game-interesting when your a kid but kind of boring to hear now
Lovers Concerto a take off on a bach piano concerto
This Diamond Ring Gary Lewis big hit that year and fun to sing, even though its a sad song
Help Me Rhonda the beach boys ba ba ba song what does it mean?
You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' what can i say, its good, also sung in the top gun movie
Wooly Bully another hammond organ riff song
1-2-3 well this is heard even in commercials today and rallies at sport games for chants
Treat Her Right R&B soul
I got you babe-classic sonny&cher tune
Eve of Destruction wow its the end times with all the wars in this bob dylan-esc styled protest
U.S. musicians fighting back against the British invasion.......2002-01-31
In 1965 the British Rock Invasion was quickly becoming much more than the Beatles and this collection of hits shows that American music was starting to offer up something in the way of a meaningful response. Certainly the Beach Boys doing "Help Me Rhonda," The Righteous Brothers powering through "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" and Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction" are steps in the right direction. Opinion is more diverse regarding "Wooly Bully" and pretty much anything by Sonny & Cher. As every one in class knows, the rule of thumb when judging a greatest hits collection is whether you find five or more songs you would love to add to your music library. Depending on how extensive your personal collection happens to be right now, this one has got a good shot at passing that litmus test.
OMIT THE "NAME GAME" AND YOU HAVE A GOOD CD.......2000-09-18
On 2/12/2000, I had the pleasure of hearing Barry McGuire sing his 1965 social classic, "Eve of Destruction" with John Michael Talbot. That is a very powerful song with a very relevant message.
Ever since I was a very little child, I have had a strong, constitutional aversion for "the Name Game." As a child, I would run from the room or turn off the radio. I said at 3, "That's not a song. It's stupid and bad because those aren't REAL words. I'm glad MY name's not in it." I hate the "Name Game" as much today as I did then. It is intolerable, idiotic, highly annoying and has nothing in creation to recommend it. The "Name Game" has cost this otherwise good collection 2 stars.
More Original Versions of Pop Hits.......1998-06-30
You should know all of these songs by heart, and they're all classics of 1965 pop. The elusive "Eve of Destruction" alone is worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
Great Music but Overpriced!.......2007-03-10
"Billboard Top Rock 'n' Roll Hits: 1957-1961" offers up some fantastic music from the golden age of rock & roll.
The sound quality is great, as is the selection of hits.
My problem is that there are only 10 songs per disk!
Hey Billboard - this is the 21st Century - you're not selling vinyl anymore.
This set could have been released on 2 CDs and the price set accordingly.
So while I'd rate the music 5 "Stars", my overall rating is only a 3.
GREAT ROCK & ROLL GIFT.......2007-02-07
I got this for my parents for Christmas and they LOVE it. Great way to get your folks to boogie down and get their blood flowin'. They are having a blast with this CD collection.
Great gift.......2007-01-16
I bought this box set for my dad for Christmas - his favorite "oldies" station in his rural hometown just switched to party mix! He really enjoys playing these CD's, although he's not really a CD collecting kind of guy. I'll be getting the next series for his birthday.
The Real Thing.......2005-02-17
These are real hits from the years indicated and separated by disk into the separate years. If you were around in those years and listening to the radio, you don't have to be told this. If the price is right for you, then I highly recommend you buy.
Fantafabulous Album!!!!!!!.......2002-03-26
GREAT ALBUM, lots of variety. you will not be disappointed!!!
Lovely, Stellar, Sparkeling!!

Certainly the best one.......2004-09-07
This CD has the best compilation in all the Billboard collection. Another great thing is its low price, making it a hard to beat 'bang for the buck'!
What's on it?.......2001-12-16
One problem with the Billboard CD's is that they change the content. You can buy Top RnR Hits for 1966 with one set of titles on it and then when you go to buy another copy, it has different songs on it, but the same product number. You can't replace a lost CD.

Awesome collection with excellent sound quality........2000-07-10
Rock 'n' roll compilations are as numerous as shells and rocks on a Pacifica beach. It's difficult to decide which ones to buy. There are a rare few that are must own, usually the ones on TV. I've been trying to collect the BILLBOARD and OLDIES BUT GOODIES series, but process has been slow. There's no second guessing with this collection-it's awesome! The year 1966 was an explosive year in music. The Beach Boys-PET SOUND, The Beatles-REVOLVER, The Byrds-FIFTH DIMENSION were a few of the most valuable albums released. A small sampling of the top singles are collected here. "I'm A Believer" is a marvelous opening track, with crystal clear sound quality. All the songs are classic-"Wild Thing", "Soul And Inspiration", "Good Vibrations", "Good Lovin'", "When A Man Loves A Woman" just to name a few. Performed by top 1960s bands-The Lovin' Spoonful, The Beach Boys, Tommy James, The Righteous Brothers, The Mamas & The Papas. Though every song and band are noteworthy, I'd be here for hours describing them. Inside is a time capsule with the top headlines, fads, movies, TV shows, plays, books, and debuts. While BILLBOARD TOP ROCK 'N' ROLL HITS aren't the most comprehensive collections. This 1966 one is excellent, an inexpensive way to get terrific songs with great sound. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
THIS CD ROCKS.......1998-11-14
I bought this cd a while ago and it rules! The best songs on it are "I'm a Beliver" and "Wild Thing". If you like 60's music. This cd is for you.

For 1961 tracks 7 through 10 were changed!
1988 (7) Bobby Vee, "Take Good Care Of My Baby"
1993 (7) Chris Kenner, "I Like It Like That, Part 1"
1988 (8) The Marvelettes, "Please Mr. Postman"
1993 (8) Shep & The Limelites, "Daddy's Home"
1988 (9) Ernie K-Doe, "Mother-In-Law"
1993 (9) Ben E. King, "Stand By Me"
1988 (10) The Tokens, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
1993 (10) James Darren, "Goodbye Cruel World"
In this case, I prefer the 1988 edition because even though "Stand By Me" is conspicuously absent from it, "Mother-In-Law" is one of those classic, funny tunes that I frequently find myself singing around the house without even realizing it half-the-time when I'm busy. Also, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" belongs on a disc such as this moreso than does its replacement. When I think of the title, "Goodbye Cruel World," I think Pink Floyd, not James Darren! :)
It So IS The Top of The Crop (what there is).......2004-11-03
When you have 2 reviewers who spend more time than Stephen King typing and you get comments about how few songs are on the CD, something has to be wrong. To the compilers of this CD, can you spare it?! BUT I do remember checking the paper every Friday in 1961, Mr. Mathena, to see how my favorite songs were faring (NOT Billboard input either) and ALL of the songs on this CD were Top 10ers. It WAS however Billboard which reported "Tossin' and Turnin'" as the #1 single of the year. "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" early in the year was the follow-up to "Tonight's the Night". And as to Stephen King, the Rob Reiner movie represented "Stand By Me" as on the air in 1959. Wrong, but it WAS a Top 10 hit in 1961. "I Like it Like That" was a summer hit while "Daddy's Home" came in the fall as did "Goodbye Cruel World". I could go on. ALL TOP 10 HITS as to sales, jukebox plays and radio requests. But why so FEW on this CD? Time-Life has these pikers beat hands down. Buy the songs--they are ALL hits and memorable--just not this particular CD.
A Great Beginning for the Decade.......2001-10-25
The early 60's may have been the best years of the rock and roll era, and this album shows you why.
"Tossin' and Turnin'" became the number 1 song of the year and made Bobby Lewis a one-hit wonder. If you were ever young and in love you can easily relate to the lyrics about a guy who can't sleep for thinking about his new girl. Unless you are old enough to remember home delivered milk you may not understand the line "I heard the milkman at the door....". The rest of the lyrics, though, will probably bring back a memory or two.
"Runaway" was Del Shannon's first and biggest hit, and is one of my all time favorites. You can almost picture Del "... a walkin' in the rain, tear drops fall and I feel the pain...". A true classic from 1961.
"Blue Moon" was a hopped up remake of an old ballad and made the Marcels a household name,...at least for a few months. It was the juiced up beat that made this one a big hit.
"Runaround Sue" was probably Dion's biggest hit and the first of his "you done me wrong, girl" hits. (Remember "Donna, the Prima Donna" and "Little Diane"?) I can only imagine how many times "Here's my story, it's sad but true..." has been paraphrased over the years.
When "Quarter to Three" first hit the airwaves it caused a bit of a stir. The one review I can remember back then was by a reviewer who called it "150 seconds of raw, raucous rock and roll". And it cetainly was, turning out to be (Gary) U.S. Bonds' biggest hit.
"Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" was a nice ballad by The Shirelles that is easy on the ears and always sounds good.
"Please, Mr. Postman" launched the career of The Marvalettes. Another one of those heart breakers, about a girl waiting for a letter from her boyfriend every day that, sadly, never comes ("...you wouldn't stop to make me feel better, by leaving me a card or a letter...").
"Mother-In-Law" should appeal to every man who has had to put up with a mother-in-law. A one-hit wonder for Ernie K. Doe, it was probably a bigger hit than the subject matter of the song deserves. But it's a nice tune and easy to listen--and relate--to.
If you are compiling a library of 60's music, this one is an excellent starter.
