Album Details
Italian Soprano Renata Tebaldi was One of the Most Important Post-war Sopranos to Tackle a Wide Range of Puccini Roles, and During the 1950s She Recorded Several Complete Opera Recordings. Some of the Operas were Recorded Twice in Mono and Then in Stereo. Amongst Those which Tebaldi Committed to Disc in the Recording Studio on Two Occasions Must Be Included La Bohème and Madama Butterfly. It is the Earlier, Mono Recordings of These Two Operas which Are Included Here and They Reveal a Fresh-voiced Tebaldi in Recordings Which, Despite the Stereo Remakes, have Stood the Test of Time.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to Tebaldi's art.......2005-09-29
This set covers the entire productive years of Tebaldi's recording career. Turandot, Butterfly and Boheme are from her earlier career while Tosca is from her later career. Since this Tosca recording is now out of print and is somewhat hard to find, this recording itself almost worth the cost of the set. In Turandot, you will find Tebaldi at her fresher voice, lovely and melting. Eventhough I would still rate Callas' first recorded Tosca as my first choice, this Tosca comes very close. Enjoy.
Wonderfull.......2005-08-19
Fantastic recordings at a very good price. Tebaldi and Del Monaco rule. You should definetely own this set.
Classic Renata.......2005-03-16
To say that these 12 disks contain some of the finest singing ever committed to disk is no exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact. Historical fact. In the 100 years (more or less) that Puccini operas have been around, only a few sopranos in each generation have been the equal of Renata Tebaldi. One cannot objectively say that anyone has surpassed her. Some opera lovers find her peerless in many of these performances. Personal tastes in singers vary, but no one ever sang these roles better. Few anywhere nearly so well. There is not a single note on any of these recordings that is not heartfelt to the core of her being. Like Maria Callas and Franco Corelli, she was luminous, gargantuan in her talent that personified an age. This is one of the great compilations.

A fine recording of Howell's greatest work.......2001-06-02
Herbert Howells is best known for his church and organ music though he wrote some fine orchestral and chamber works too. Hymnus Paradisi had a long gestation and was completed in 1938 though the war delayed its first performance, at the Three Choirs Festival, until 1950. The chronology is rather confused but he was contemplating composing a requiem in the early 1930s and a first sketch was complete by 1932. His son, Michael, developed a fatal infection in late 1935. He was only nine years old. Howells was devastated and never really got over his loss. The Requiem became an intensely personal thing for him and he kept it in a drawer. It was not published until 1980. This piece for unaccompanied choir is very beautiful and has music in common with the Hymnus, so they are intimately connected.
Hymnus Paradisi is a work of incandescent beauty and Lux perpetua - Everlasting Light - sums up the nature of the music. Fiendishly difficult to sing, the vocal lines weave in and out of each other to produce harmonies I can only describe as intense white light as music. The orchestral writing is brilliant, underpinned by mighty organ pedals from time to time. This is one of the greatest choral works of the 20th century and one not to be missed. I was privileged to attend a performance in Hereford cathedral in the late 1970s in the presence of the composer. A diminutive but still handsome man in his eighties, he sat on the raised dias at the rear, both hands folded on top of his stick.
The performance by Richard Hickox and his forces is a very fine one and the recording is excellent. The 1970 recording under David Willcocks was transfered to CD and is still available at the time of writing (2001) and is just as good. I would hesitate to choose between them.
Hickox captures Howell's grief and precarious optimism.......2000-11-21
What a poignantly beautiful piece of music. From the very opening measures it's obvious that this is a committed performance--intense in fact. There are many delicate, and obviously intimate, moments in this music and all are caught beautifully by Hickox, soloists, and the BBC.
What does the music sound like? It's easier to say what it doesn't sound like. In mysterious sections, Howells colors material "touched by the breath of the eternal," predictably, with delicate harp filigree and rarefied chord progressions, but avoids the Holstian harp/vibraphone twos against threes sound, ("Saturn," of "The Planets" is a good example); reflective moments glow appropriately, but Howells maintains a contrapuntal rigor and forward motion even in times of repose, while Faure, Delius, and Durufle can make one feel as though time is standing still.
Vaughan Williams' is about the closest reference I could give--though only on occasion. Howells does not employ any folk-song elements as far as I can tell. The music is chromatic and the vocal writing often sounds declamatory rather than "smoothly melodic." Hymnus is a reworking of an earlier Requiem, and was written as a sort of therapy after the death of the composer's 9yr old son. It was VW who convinced Howells to offer the work for public performance.
The Chandos recording also contains a premiere recording of Howells' "A Kent Yeoman's Wooing Song." It's an extrovert piece with a very endearing love song as the 3rd mov't.
Solists include Joan Rogers, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, and Alan Opie.
Splendid British Choral Music.......2000-06-30
Although Herbert Howells might not be as popular as other British contemporaries, such as Vaughan Williams and William Walton, his music truly deserves to be widely heard. Being a fan of British music, I first got acquainted with Howells through this magnificent work. There is a great tradition of choral music among British composers. Just think of Vaughan Williams, Holst, Britten... Howells' "Hymnus Paradisi" must definitely be added to this distinguished list for it is an unquestionable masterpiece. At its core resonates a profound sense of loss. The work was composed to exteriorize deep feelings of mourning, following the death of the composer's six years old son, Michael. The feeling here is one of muted introspection. There are powerful tuttis, but the overall atmosphere is quite introspective. The orchestral prelude is arresting. It combines a sense of urgency and bitterness with a dramatic flourish of anger faced with life's cruel injustice. The "Requiem Aeternam" that immediately follows, is by contrast one of the most moving expressions of mourning I have ever heard in sacred music. Some parts bring to mind Gabriel Fauré's "Requiem"'s quiet intimacy. As with most Chandos releases, this recording is terrific with a rich, sensitive performance by the BBC Syphony orchestra and Chorus under Richard Hickox's baton. The recording is spacious. I have since acquired other Howells recordings. This is music with vision and a wide range of expressive feelings. The music is not all gloom and despair. Quite the contrary: I think it shimmers with a deep appreciation of life's beauty. Let us hope now that Chandos will bring us many more works by this most talented of composers.

Customer Reviews:
The best is wonderful, but there are a few duds.......2006-07-17
No portrait of a singer can satisfy all cmers, so EMI has shrugged its shoulders and tossed a bit of everything into the pot. (Without including any bonus tracks, one should note.) Hampson is without a doubt the successor to Fischer-Dieskau as the world's most famous operatic baritone. His strengths, like F-D's, are in song, especially American song. Seven of the 19 cuts here are American songs, which isn't enough. We don't really need Hampson's rather plodding and earnest Viennese operetta aria, nor his duet, "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better" with the shrill Kim Criswell (to tell the truth, neither does very well). Two small slivers from Schumann's Dichterlieve cycle seems rather silly, too.
But that leaves a lot that's wonderful--all the American selections, the Rossini and Liszt songs, the aria form Korngold's Die Tote Stadt, and above all Hampson's rollicking, let-'er-rip rendition of Figaro's aria form the Barber of Seville. If this omnium gatherum entices listeners to bu the complete recordings, it will serve a very good purpose.
Beautiful Voice, Bad Choices.......2003-11-25
Short and Sweet.
I love listening to this beautiful baritone's voice, but I really don't like his choice of songs on this album. Beautiful Dreamer is so hackneyed and I can't stand to listen to it (also why I didn't buy the Stephen Foster album). I did like is choice of two classic lieder by Schumann. I would have chosen more lieder for a different album, he does great things with it. The Live recording of Largo al factotum from Barber is distracting with audience claps and poor mics for the recording. You can hear him walking away from the mics (fading in and out). The absolute worst choice is "Anything You Can Do" from Annie Get Your Gun. It sounds nice but I hate this song. The rest of the songs swing from Sappy awful to beautifully sung.
Bottom Line: Inconsistent and Not worth your money. He can do much better
A Great Showcase of Hampson's Voice and Artistry.......2002-02-23
Thomas Hampson is definitely one of the greatest artists on today's musical scene. This CD displays the beauty of Hampson's voice and the intelligence and artistry that he brings to a great variety of musical styles (German, French and Italian Opera; Italian, French and German art song, and American music). Among the highlights are the first selection, the beautiful "Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen" from DIE TOTE STADT by Korngold, sung with great control and melting pianissimos. The same can be said of the aria from TANNHAUSER. His live "Largo al Factotum" from IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA is just virtuosistic, with effortless high notes (even a cadenza up to high C) and energetic vocal acting. In the art songs he is no less impressive, with total involvement in the style and mood of the songs, being particularly impressive "Oh, quand je dors" by Lizt. The American repertoire is also a delight. Hampson displays all kind of nuances for this repertoire, from the estatic quality of "Beautiful Dreamer" to the humor and bawdiness of "Where Is The Life that Late I Led". In summary, this is a delightful and eclectic souvenir from one of the most charismatic and intelligent singers of our time.
Comprehensive coverage of Hampson's range in song.......2001-11-01
This EMI disc, "Thomas Hampson, Portrait" is an excellent example of the wide range of this melliflous baritone. From the first German aria, Korngold's "Mein Sehnen, mein Wahnen" one of my personal favourites, to Jerome Kern's "The Last Time I saw Paris" you have great variety of opera, lieder and popular song offering you examples of Hampson's great talent. Buy and enjoy! Jill Whitburn

Consumate Candian Brass.......2000-08-12
This is another great Canadian Brass retrospective. It is a varied and very listenable cross section of their recordings as of 1988. The selections extend from Bach to ragtime and Gershwin, and just about everything in between. Many of the selections are not usual brass fare, but are given the special, superb Canadian Brass treatment.
absolutely great.......2000-08-05
this is a great cd, theres no two ways about it. i got this as a gift from my mother(both of us being trumpet players, we love brass stuff) and wore out my first copy. the range of music is wonderful, from classical to jazz and even gershwin, it has it all. a great cd to read by. it inspired me to buy the sheet music( its as much fun to play as to listen to). a fantastic addition to any music cllection.

A haunting and revealing musical collection.......2000-01-20
While I am an admirer of Mizrahi's voice, it is the variety and quality of the repertoire that struck me most about this recording. Mizrahi and the conductor and arranger, Matthew Lazar have collected a broad selection of fairly old Jewish music that reveals a strong connection to early Christian and middle eastern music. Mizrahi's powerful and flexible tenor is up to the challenge of shaping and reshaping the ancient melismatic music in a haunting and revealing manner. I was initially struck by the power of his voice and the intensity of his falsetto on Respondemos, a Sephardic-Ladino piece from the High Holyday repertoire. The overall sound of this recording, in terms of its production values adds to the mystical element. I understand there is a follow-up CD to this recording. I can only hope it is as moving.
Extremely fine performances of an eclectic collection........1999-05-03
Mizrahi's strong tenor makes for very exciting listening, with items ranging from gregorian-chant -like ancient melodies to more popular 20th century works. The disc makes for a remarkable tour of jewish liturgical music.

The Hyperion Schubert edition has moved into its final phase--surveys of songs not yet covered, arranged by period. The years 1817-21 were some of the most productive of Schubert's short life--he left home and lived with friends, possibly lovers, was briefly arrested by the secret police, and started to be recognized as a real force in Viennese music. Among the high points of this disc of songs, part songs, and a chamber cantata are Thomas Hampson's dangerous, dreamy performance of "Atys," a setting of a poem about sexual ambiguity and ambivalence by Schubert's roommate Mayrhofer and Christopher Maltman's delicate rendering of the well-known "Wanderer's Nightsong." Philip Langridge is charming in "Die Einsiedelei" with its sense of the need for pastoral retreat. The various part songs, in which singers as well-known as Ian Bostridge and John-Mark Ainsley put in guest appearances, make relaxing interludes between masterpieces. Graham Johnson's commentary in the accompanying booklet is as helpful and intelligent as his piano accompaniment. --Roz Kaveney

Customer Reviews:
A masterful album from two veterans.......2001-03-26
This album is a meeting of two of the great trombone players from the bop era. Both J.J. and Grey are Count Basie alumnus, and it is no surprise that the Count would have had these guys in his band. It is demonstrated on this album time and time again just how good J.J. and Grey are.
The CD opens with a classic Benny Goodman tune, Soft Winds. It is played at a frenetic break-neck speed and both the trombonists pull out great solos. There are a good mix of tracks on the CD; fast swinging numbers; slow ballads, such as track 3 and 4; and funky numbers, such as tracks 7 and 8. The diversity of the music played on this album demonstrates how versatile both the leaders are. The all-star rythm section are not over shadowed by the two horn men. Barron plays an especially brilliant solo on "Let Me See" and Ray Brown shows why he is considered a master of the upright bass on track 7.
Throughout the album Grey muted (his trademak) and J.J plays open, allowing his brilliant tone to be revealed. This variation in timbre provides a fantastic textured feeling on all tracks. It is easy to hear the two distinct personalities of the trombonists in their solos.
A must for any jazz fan.

Customer Reviews:
Christine Brewer Sings Schubert.......2005-10-26
Young and vital soprano Christine Brewer is now among the top Wagner and Strauss interpreters entering the arena of big voices on the operatic stage today. This recording, one volume (31) of the famed Hyperion Schubert Collection, finds her singing Schubert lieder, and given that this recording dates back to 1998, it is interesting to hear how her voice has developed.
Many of the sopranos who opt for careers in the operas of Wagner, Strauss, and the heavier weight Verdi/Puccini roles demonstrate less conviction when it comes to the communication required in the German lieder, especially Schubert. But here is Brewer eight years ago with all the promise of her soaring, rich voice addressing the smaller scale intimacies of Schubert and doing it quite successfully. Some of the vocal traits that seemed possibly problematic here (glottal attacks, a bit of pitch lurching) are happily not present in her current vocal estate!
This is an odd cluster of Schubert with Lieder combined with choral works (the Psalms), but given the overall context of Hyperion's venture, these all flow well. Certainly the artists perform them well - Graham Johnson is a superb accompanist - and the choral work is in keeping with the period. Not a great collection of works, but this early introduction to Christine Brewer will become a collector's item. She has a major career ahead! Grady Harp, October 05
Have no fear !.......2003-01-01
Of course we all demand a capable performance. Unfortunatly I am frequently dissapointed. Prepare yourself to be astonished. Christine Brewer delivers a powerful yet amazingly luscious & almost creamy sound. You will stand jaw-dropingly awed by this unique combination of powerful mastery & Soothing finesse. ENJOY

This has to be Mancini at his best.......2004-03-01
This CD contains contains Mancini's Beaver Valley Suite. In this Suite, he "writes" of his childhood in a steel town. Anyone who grew up in a mill town will immediately identify with the images created by the music. This has to be Mancini at his best. There are six more original pieces (tracks 6 through 11) that showcase Henry Mancini's unique ability of giving joy to others while doing something that he truly enjoys. I have all of these pieces on the LP, Debut. I have been looking for them on CD for years. I am listening to the CD as I write this review. As the sleeve says, it "presents a quality of sound superior to the original vinyl album."
