5 out of 5 stars Black Market Baby at their finest..........2006-01-12

It's the mid-80's and the Bayou is crowded. Nestled under the Whitehurst Freeway in Washington, D.C., the Bayou is one of the clubs in D.C. known for featuring punk acts. The club is packed, it's hot, and it smells of sweat and stale beer. The crowd anxiously waits for the concert to start; tonight's card features Black Market Baby and the Ramones. There is the standard assortment of suburban punks, hardcore punks, posers, freelance writers, hangers-on, and stinking drunk college kids. The bartenders are furiously serving Budweiser or Coors, the only drinks the Bayou serves and the lone waitress is far too busy chatting to even attempt to wade through the sea of unwashed humanity that has filled the club.

The lights dim, Black Market Baby is announced and they quietly file on stage; what follows is a tour de force from one of the finest punk acts to grace a stage. From start to finish the band is a volatile mix of passion and energy combined with raw guitars, gritty lyrics, and an unrelenting rhythm section. This is real punk rock. It is pure adrenaline dispensed in heavy doses by four expert musicians bent on saving their corner of the musical landscape.

Fast forward twenty some odd years later to the recently released "Coulda... Shoulda... Woulda..." from Black Market Baby on Dr. Strange Records. It's a collection of previously released material (which had become nearly impossible to find) along with unreleased material including a live version of "Nobody Wanted Us." This is old school punk that is furious and approachable; it is the essence of Black Market Baby. It was rare to find a band that could supply social commentary without falling into tabloid lyricism; both "Downward Christian Soldiers" and "This Year's Prophet" are edgy without preaching. "Drunk and Disorderly" and "Back Seat Sally" provide a snapshot of the raucous enthusiasm of punk in its heyday.

There were less talented punk bands that went on to the limited stardom that the genre offered. It is a cruel twist of fate that this band never made it as big as they deserved. "Coulda... Woulda... Shoulda..." is a magnum opus, a proud display of musical achievement that few could ever dream to reach. It is punk at its finest. It is Black Market Baby.

5 out of 5 stars The REAL DC Punks...........2006-01-12

Black Market Baby was DC's best punk band, period. For all the talk about the Dischord scene, Bad Brains, Scream, etc., BMB wrote the best songs, were the best musicians, and consistently put on the best live shows. Oh, and, for what it's worth, they also came the closest to living the punk/rock & roll lifestyle, getting banned from quite a few DC clubs in the process. This compilation is long overdue, even if it does share 16-17 songs with the '96 German CD comp, "Baby Takes". My only quibble here is that some of BMB's classic material is missing here - why, for example, no "Out Of My League", "Human Hurricane", or "Anal Face"? Why weren't the live cuts from their only LP, "Senseless Offerings" included here? This is a lengthy disk, clocking in at close to 80 minutes, and I guess Dr. Strange didn't want to (or didn't have quite enough material to) go to two disks. Whatever....I loudly applaud Dr. Strange for putting this out....and oh, by the way, it all sounds great! (remasterings or remixings maybe?) Now....if Boyd and Tommy and whoever wants to play bass (Myk, Mikey?) can only find the Geezer (AKA Keith C.), wherever he's been hiding for the past few years, maybe the band can play somewhere and support/plug this great CD!
