By 1969, black artists were following rock's lead and recording extended epics. At the forefront of such experimentation was big bad Isaac Hayes, coauthor of countless Stax classics and an artist in his own right. On this, his second album, Hayes takes two MOR-pop benchmarks, Burt Bacharach's "Walk On By" and Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," and spins them out into slow-building sermons lasting 12 and 18.5 minutes apiece. Heavily romantic, they predate by two years Barry White's symphonic adventures in the same style, revolutionizing soul music in the process. Meanwhile, on the album's third epic, the 10-minute "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic," Hayes and his backing band the Bar-Kays wind up sounding, bizarrely, like a black Crazy Horse. --Barney Hoskyns

5 out of 5 stars One of the best soul platters around!.......2007-07-22

One of the great masterpieces of 60s and 70s R&B (and still one of the genre's key standard-bearers), Hot Buttered Soul is an impeccably crafted album, a stunning showcase of music at its emotionally resonant best. The record's production is simply stunning, a dreamy and overwhelming combination of lush strings and refined horns with throbbing basses and raw, distorted guitars. Each song is an impossibly well-built soundscape, a work that gushes with emotion and unchecked power. Hayes' rough, warm voice rings with both devotion and sex, pain and sensuality. The man fills every lyric on this album with life and passion, transforms each sentence into a sermon. The result? Pure gold.

The album opens with an epic reworking of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Walk on By." Hayes' arrangement lends the song an incredible amount of tension, complimenting the dramatic lyrics with swirling horns, relentless rhythms, and cruel electric guitars. It may not be a Spector-esque "wall of sound," but it is some kind of musical architecture. The song slowly builds in intensity, finally exploding a thundering climax (or should I say catharsis?) of flailing strings, breathtaking melodies, and the hypnotic, relentless throb of an organ. The result sounds like some unprecedented combination of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "Down By the River." Brillinant!

Next up is "Hyperbolicsyllabicesquedalymistic," which has a lot more going for it than a great title. It's a stomping soul-funk stunner, with a nasty wah-wah guitars and some unstoppable stomping rhythms. Hayes' voice is pure attitude. He's like a laid-back, cooler-than-cool James Brown. The song's extended instrumental break is a sweaty, hypnotic jam, driven by a fantastic piano solo and a thudding bass line.

After that is "One Woman." At a "pitiful" five minutes and seven seconds long, it's the shortest song on the album. It's also the tamest, devoid of the grittier sounds faound elsewhere on Hot Buttered Soul. Still, it's a beautiful tune, thanks to its soaring melody, gorgeous orchestration, and Hayes' impassioned vocal.

Finally, there's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix." A classic example of an artist covering a song and making it entirely his own, this recording should (if there's any justice in this world) go down in history as one of the greatest soul performances, ever. Isaac takes his time with the song, unselfconciously stretching it across over eighteen minutes. Nearly half of the performance is spent on an incredible opening narration, in which Hayes relates the tune's backstory over a minimal accompaniment (a single, pounding cymbal, with a humming organ), slowly building up a sense of emotional anguish and escelating tension- before releasing all of it in the song's second half, a relentless rush of gushing orchestration and nuanced vocals. Like "Walk On By," the song goes out on a sky scraping instrumrental climax, putting the ideal cap on a great song (and a great album).

Great, great stuff. If you even vaguely like soul or R&B, you really should have this.

5 out of 5 stars Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic .......2007-05-09

When I was about 12 or 13, my father said the best album he ever owned was Isaac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul". I remembered this about 7 years ago and I see why my dad told me that. Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic is one of the baddest, funkiest track ever made. If you are a "true" fan of 70's R&B, this album is a must have in you collection.

5 out of 5 stars As important today as in 1969........2007-03-22

Isaac Hayes' "Hot Buttered Soul" was radically different from anything which Stax Records had previously released. Hayes' eclectic mix of Soul, Jazz and lush, symphonic orchestration was certainly revolutionary back in 1969...but it made him a superstar. In retrospect, Hayes' 1969-74 recordings laid the foundation for Disco and this album remains a pivotal release. Indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars Progressive soul from a master..........2007-03-13

Way before Isaac played Chef on the sometimes funny, mostly smug sitcom South Park, and before he flipped out on Scientology, he made some of the greatest soul albums of all time. This is the one I consider his best. It's only got 4 tracks on it, but they are all gorgeous. Isaac has a great sense of narrative, and this is demonstrated the best in the song By the Time I Get to Phoenix. It runs 18:40, but he needs every minute of that to tell the story behind the song. The actual song doesn't begin until about half way through it. A lot of people like Isaac's Shaft soundtrack, but I never really dug it. This album, Movement, and Joy are my favorites. Issac Hayes is a lot like the group War, in that he's what I call progressive soul music (who actually opened for him on some tours). Albums with long, complicated arrangements, but with a ton of soul. That's Isaac. That's War. And this is a great album....

5 out of 5 stars Hot Buttered Soul.......2007-02-03

Mr. Hayes shows us what he's made of on this CD. A true soul artist. It's amazing to me that he even was able to get this recorded, as songs over two minutes were regarded as 'long!' This music still sounds 'fresh' today! Five stars for Mr. Hayes

There's a long tradition of artists banding together for a noble cause, but--needless to say--good intentions are no guarantee of good art. Fortunately, the twain do meet and the project even succeeds with creative flair in this compilation. It kicked off the Red Hot AIDS Benefit series back in 1990 and in fact launched its own sort of minigenre, including theme albums devoted to George Gershwin and Duke Ellington. In fact, this eclectic mix of Cole Porter covers interpreted by a wide swath of contemporary artists unfurls a pretty ambitious agenda in addition to its message of AIDS awareness and compassion. Here, the legacy of this ultra-sophisticated, closeted master of the popular song from the era of the "lost generation" is presented as a source of rejuvenating inspiration. Porter's craft seems validated by the very flexibility of the original songs as they get retrofitted to encompass styles ranging from U2 and Tom Waits to Jungle Brothers. There's an occasional miscalculation (Debbie Harry and Iggy Pop's didactic "updating" of Porter's bon vivant wit doesn't compare well with the original), but moments of stunning fusion abound (Sinéad O'Connor and Annie Lenox contribute especially memorable gems). Instead of getting lost in translation, Red Hot + Blue adds a whole new dimension to the art of swellegance. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars Red Hot & Blue: A Tribute to Cole Porter.......2007-07-25

Awesome CD, used to have the cassette tape. We decided we had waited long enough to here this grouping of music again....so bought the CD. Especially as it was sold as a money raiser for AIDS. Wonderful songs, fab groups singing them. We love it.

4 out of 5 stars red hot and sometimes, not!.......2007-05-14

this is the red hot that started the whole affair. this collection of cole porter covers was recorded as a way to let the world know that the music industry cared about aids awareness and raising money to bring about a cure.

the representation of artists is a cross section of who was hot in 1990 with few exceptions (prince, janet jackson, madonna and cyndi lauper immediately comes to mind--madonna would pay her dues soon though). some of them are gloriously up to doing the cole porter songs justice.

for example, lisa stansfield's 'down in the depths' is elegantly jazzy and a perfect showcase for her sweet honeyed mezzo. and, kd lang can do wrong working her way through 'so in love'. it's brilliant. as is annie lennox's 'ev'ry time we say goodbye'.

others bring their stamp to the songs and make it happen for the pop market. u2's 'night and day' is a great success, david byrne takes 'don't fence me in' on a great romp and fine young cannibals take 'love for sale', which has an unshakeable identity with women from billie holiday to aretha franklin, and makes it a randy boy-toy cruise that porter would have loved!

now, while sinead o'connor and iggy pop made be the last two singers one would expect to take on cole porter, o'connor's whispery boop-a-doop approach to 'you do something to me' is a definite change of pace and pop just says 'so what!?' he and debbie harry give 'well, did you evah?' the punked out once over that again would have tickled porter to no end.

now, if he wouldn't lose his sense of humor on some of the rest, as a listener i do. jody watley has one of the toughest tunes to do in 'after you--who?'. and a sense of humor or a little help from elton john might have saved her. as is her apporach is too studied and careful. and i don't get salif keita's 'begin the beguine'. this is one of the songs that needed to be sung because of its lusicious melody. and i like rap as much as the next person but i have to concede the point that porter's lyrics don't need reconception as raps.

4 out of 5 stars A CD I still listen to regularly after years.......2007-02-19

This collection of Cole Porter songs performed by different contemporary artists came out in the early 90's as a fundraiser to benefit AIDS research.

The artists have different styles, so you'll probably like some tracks much more than others. I think they're uniformly good with some standouts, such as Annie Lennox's Everytime We Say Goodbye.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting tribute developing now it's own classic status........2006-07-18

The beautiful elements of all Porter's work are that the songs he penned are elegant, witty, refreshingly verbose, timeless and can, in effect, be sung by anyone to anyone. They are loving, sexy and sexless at once; which reveals much about the great man's character and genius.
The songs and artists here are a sound spread of genre. Sung in either classic form or as refreshing reworkings. On the whole it works well with a few unfortunate exceptions.
It is well worth adding to a discerning collection. My personal favourites are those which by and large retain their classic quality, Annie Lennox, K D Lang and Lisa Stansfield do beautiful interpretations of their chosen songs. Andy Bell and David Byrne add twists which work to great effect. It is a certainty that the album is developing it's own classic status as time moves on, it was origianlly released in 1990. The perfect tribute at the time and a mark of how far we have come in an effort to fight HIV. The songs howevr in my opinion need little tinkering or adjustment since they were and are beautiful, it is a shame some of the artists chose to rework certain songs so heavily.

4 out of 5 stars FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS THE BEST SONG.......2006-05-21

I BOUGHT THIS CD FOR ONE SONG AND ONE SONG ONLY.
LOVE FOR SALE BY THE FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS. THE CANNIBALS
NOT ONLY DO JUSTICE TO COLE PORTER'S LEGACY, THEIR PERFORMANCE
ILLUSTRATES PORTER'S SONGWRITING BRILLIANCE. ROLAND GIFT NAILS THE SONG'S MOODS AND THE ACCOUSTIC TOUCH IS ON TARGET FOR THIS SONG. IT IS A SHAME THAT THE CANNIBALS ONLY MADE A COUPLE ALBUMS, BUT LOVE FOR SALE IS ARGUABLY THEIR FINEST SONG, AND REASON ENOUGH TO BUY THIS CD.

Amazon.com essential recording

From "Surfin'" to "Kokomo," the first four discs of this box chart the Beach Boys' inimitable 30-year course. Here are all the hits and key album tracks, and an assortment of unreleased material that illuminates Brian Wilson and company's immense contribution to the development of pop music. (Especially fascinating are the assembled fragments from Wilson's abandoned 1966 masterwork, Smile.) A fifth disc features demos, radio spots, live tracks, and studio goodies for the hardcore fan. The set confirms Brian's hardworking genius, but also gives each member his due, especially the late Carl Wilson. Rock & roll music grew up with the Beach Boys, and this box is rock's best family album. --Ben Edmonds

3 out of 5 stars 30 yrs of B.B. review.......2007-03-25

First let me say that when they are doing well, I love the Beach Boys. The first time I saw them live was the summer of approx. 2000. I was so totally satisfied and blown away! I heard that they sometimes do sub-par shows but this must have been one of the great ones. Allentown, PA fairgrounds. This set has many good cuts but I must say that in the effort to build a compilation set, they included a bunch of ( to me) space taking junk. If you are into trivia and deep details, you might get into it but if you are into the music, you'll have to pick and choose your way thru the set and maybe burn to CD the ones you really want.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Worth Buying For the Smile Material Alone.......2007-03-05

I do agree with some of the criticsm here. There are MANY great songs not on this. "Salt Lake City" for example, or all of the Brian lead ballads on "Today!". And you can get better sound quality and stereo versions of songs like "California Girls" and "Heroes and Villains" on other albums. But because of the inclusion of the Smile work and the bonus disc containing some great material this is worth getting. If I am not mistaken Disc 5 is the only place you can hear "Good Vibrations" in stereo albeit as it is being recorded and mostly instrumental at that phase.

That said I reccomend getting all of their cd's if you really like the Beach Boys because there are TONS of non-hits that are INCREDIBLE!!! Go get "Today!" and listen to the whole album and you will see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys. MORE THAN JUST A GREATEST HITS, THIS BOX IS ALSO A BEACH BOYS HISTORY LESSON .......2007-02-16

Most of this box set was recorded in mono due to Brian Wilson being deaf in one ear and of course 1960s ancient recording technology. I beleive Capital did a fine job with the song selection of this Beach Boys box set. If your looking at this box set as a greatest hits collection you're looking in the wrong direction. "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys" is a greatest hits collection with a following of The Beach Boys through their illustrius history. The booklet is very informative, the outakes disc 5, is really interesting especially hearing "Good Vibrations" played live before it was even released. On disc 5, "God Only Knows" along with the "Good Vibrations" sessions is an incredible facinating look into the disection of two of the most argueably popular pop songs of all time. I don't look at this box set as a great Beach Boys Box Set, but there is something in it for every Beach Boys fan. Please Realize that The Beatles had Lennon and McCartney and the greatest record producer of all time in Sir George Martin. The Beach Boys had talented musicians, but the majority of Beach Boys output was that of Brian Wilson. Brian Wilson in reality had to go up against The Beatles all by himself.
Brian also produced 10 Beach Boys albums by the tender age of 23. The Beatles had George Martin producing all their Magnum Opuses. The Beatles were great, there is no argument from me there, but by (Pet Sounds) 1966 Sir George Martin and The Beatles soon realized that a man named Brian Wilson was just as talented musically, or far surpassed any of The Beatles in musical talent individually. If the missing songs are bothering you, buy all the "Capital Re-issue Twofers" with there expansive linear notes, extra and alternate tracks. Remember the limited sound quality of "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys" is due to Brian Wilson being deaf in one ear, as he could only hear in mono, not in stereo like the average person can. Anything that was recorded in mono and was put in stereo during the 1960s, was called Duo-Phonic, and beleive me as I tell you the original Mono recordings sound vastly superior to any Duo Phonic stereo remastering. Duo Phonic was just fake stereo and did not help the original vastly superior sounding mono recording. "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys" may seem overkill for casual Beach Boys fans, but as I listened to each cd from 1-5 the music plays the Beach Boys history right in front of your ears.
Bottom line: "Good Vibrations: Thirty Years Of The Beach Boys" is essential to any Beach Boys fan to learn their history and to realize they were more than beach and sun music. Ps. This box set is some really good listening, if you give it a chance..............

5 out of 5 stars Great Complimation.......2007-01-04

This boxed set does not disappoint. It has all the songs you love from back when the beach boys were all the rave. Great set would buy again.

This is a classic. I could listen to "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" all day long. One of the best songs ever.

5 out of 5 stars A TIMELESS DISCO CLASSIC... deserves to be rediscovered!.......2006-09-16

This was one of the best, most juicy latin-disco tracks EVER!!! DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD is a classic!!! That latin rhythm with that brass... and the guitars... ooohhhh so so sexy!!!

I bumped into this CD quite by accident. I never thought I'd ever see it re-released. My folks bought me the LP when I was a kid somewhere back in the 70's... and I rememeber I loved that song.

Years later, I found it in one of those Disco compilations CDs... but it was the short 3-minute version. And I always got the feeling the original track was much longer...

16 minutes, actually... split into two continuous tracks: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Esmeralda Suite".

Musical extravaganzas like this... only in the 70's. And here it is complete! With brass, strings, everything but the kitchen sink! :P

Now... the 4th track You're My Everything is also a great ballad. One of those slow songs strictly for hot moments (It's all oh so 70's!!!).

And the 5th track is also a great disco song.

This album is such a great experience... I'm really sorry I never thought of getting it before.

Great memories!

3 out of 5 stars 60's Rock goes 70's Latin Disco.......2005-09-13

I first heard this in the 70's. There are a couple great songs: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" & "Esmeralda Suite" which really get you going. Of course the required cover of "Gloria" is here too. The rest is so so at best, but I can listen to the first two over and over. And by the way...I HATE DISCO!

5 out of 5 stars REAL Disco.......2005-09-09

Considered an 'underground' disco track, the title track 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' and 'Esmarelda Suite' (which sigue together) with a total playing time of almost 16 minutes, just oozes class and sophistication. Boney M/Bee Gees it aint! This is REAL disco from the 70's. You won't be disappointed with adding this album to your collection. The other 3 tracks are so-so (and were never played in the clubs). However for the aforementioned tracks, the album is worth every cent. They don't make 'em like this anymore! Buy it now.

I love this CD, I have the original album so it's great that I was able to have it on CD

5 out of 5 stars Too Hot to Handle..........2005-09-17

Heatwave invaded the U.S. with this first album. "Boogie Nights" took America by storm! But, they showed us other songs like "Super Soul Sister" and "Lay it on me." "All you do is dial" was my secondary song on this collection, since it demonstrated the talents of the Wilder Brothers. I recommend this disc to anyone seeking good 70's music. And, in closing, where is the "Hot Property" disc by Heatwave? I've been waiting 15 years!!

4 out of 5 stars too hot to handle.......2005-08-25

Great cd if you like the 8o's R n B(i think that what its called)which is a time when artists used their head a bit more.

5 out of 5 stars THE NAME FITS LIKE A GLOVE.....................2004-11-28

If you are old enough to remember when the album first came out I don't need to say anything. If this is new to you you are in for a real treat. This is a mixture of great dance music and the prettiest ballads you will ever here. This group was half what's happening now and old school all wrapped in a rare package truly a one of a kind magic that will probably never come around again. TRUST ME YOU BUT THIS ONE AND YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. (IF ANYONE KNOWS HOW TO GET THE ALBUM HOT PROPERTY BY HEATWAVE LET US ALL KNOW FOR THAT IS A TRUE GEM)

4 out of 5 stars Sounds Like A Debut.......2004-10-05

Okay, okay now I am a STONE Heatwave fan.I have every studio
album they made and listen to them every chance I get.I have this CD too and here's what I think-this is Heatwave's debut.
It's probably the first time this hard core live band ever stepped into a recording studio and it features several of the
bands classics-the brooding dance-based "Boogie Nights",the
rhythm based funk of "Ain't No Half Steppin'",the unforgettable
sweet soul ballad "Always And Forever" and the chunky title cut.
What's interesting though is how much,on the rest of this
album,Heatwave are trying to copy KC & The Sunshine Band,Brass
Construction,Rufus and other funk and disco groups of the time.
It's not nearly as individual as as brilliant albums such as
'Central Heating' and 'Hot Property' were because Heatwave
downplay their jazzier leanings in favor of simple party music.
And while tunes like the slinky "Lay It On Me" and the mean funk
of "Super Soul Sister" are very good they're not as transcendant
as the sound this band would later develope, and I will point out
I'm highly biased in this opinion too!
And the album closer, the silly "Beat Your Booty" is just
plain embarrassing-the only real Heatwave clinker due to it's
unbelievably stupid lyrics. So I suggest to anyone interested
in Heatwave's music (and you should be) pick up 'Central Heating' first and then go chronologically from their until
1982's 'Current' (that is if you still own a turn table) and get
'Too Hot To Handle' last because it just isn't a complete portrait of Heatwave's dynamic dance-funk hybrid usually is.Not
terrible but not a classic either.

3 out of 5 stars I bought it for 3 songs.......2005-08-23

It's pretty good. I specifically bought it for only 3 songs - 'Rumors,' 'I can't wait,' and 'The rain.' The whole CD could've used a lot more bass in the recording. I don't know if that's a manufacturing thing or what. But I'm a "basshead" too. I have to have the beats!

4 out of 5 stars Great songs.......2005-08-03

These are some great songs on this CD. The 80's were great and this CD takes me back.

4 out of 5 stars Good, if slim, compilation of 80's R&B.......2005-03-09

I also provided a review for the 1985 CD in this series put out by Rhino back in 1995. As with that one, this CD contains some good R&B tunes from 1986. However, as is the problem with most Rhino releases, it only contains 10 tracks. They could have certainly included a few more tracks to beef it up a little. The versions here are all original recordings by the original artists. This CD is superior to the 1985 edition in that 9 of the 10 songs went to #1 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1986. Two gripes I have:
#1 The inclusion of "Shake You Down" by Gregory Abbott which seems to be on every 80's compilation CD that I own. I must have this song on 20 different CD's. If anything, why not include his other hit, "I Got the Feelin'(It's Over)".
#2 The inclusion of Nu Shooz "I Can't Wait". Yes, I know, it did hit the R&B chart. But to me, it is more of an example of 80's New Wave Dance Music than 80's R&B. There are many, many other obscure 80's R&B songs out there that I wish would have been represented here.

Other than the slim amount of music provided, it is a good CD and the songs here are good.

5 out of 5 stars "THE BEST OF THE 1980'S".......2004-06-07

THIS IS A NICE COMPILATION CD FROM THE 1980'S. I LOVE THIS CD IT CONTAINS: THE SIGNATURE HIT FROM "ORAN JUICE JONES"- THE RAIN, YOUR SMILE, DO ME BABY , TASTY LOVE-FREDDIE JACKSON, I CAN'T WAIT-NU SHOOZ,AND RUMORS-THE TIMEX EL SOCIAL CLUB. I ENJOY THIS ALBUM I LIKE COMPILATION CDS AND THIS IS A VERY NICE ONE I WOULD RECCOMEND THIS ALBUM TO ANYONE WHO LIKES CLASSIC R&B TO PURCHASE THIS ALBUM!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Ol' School party!!!.......2002-02-26

Yes, I'll admit, I was just a young pup when these songs were out, but still, they are the jams. "Shake You Down" by Gregory Abbott, who had to be the only man who ran out of words and sang..."Eeny, meeny, miney, mo...Come on girl, Let's rock the show."!!!! Melissa Morgan does a nice cover of Prince's "Do Me, Baby". Who could forget Nu Shooz's, "I Can't Wait"? Anndddd the best dis, this-relationship-is-over-so you-better-kick-rocks-song, would have to be "The Rain," by the Juice himself. Everyone remembers him telling that girl that his "first impulse was to run up on you and do a Rambo..." and "this is my world, you're just a squirrel trying to get a nut." This album has all the ol' school classics. This album is perfect if you want to just chill and reminisce on all the fun times of the good ole days.

5 out of 5 stars Remember Studio 54?.......2007-07-22

Boy, if this doesn't bring back old times...nothing will. Great sound, quite unique for their day.

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Nostalia.......2007-04-21

So many people scoff at Disco Music of the 70's (an anti-Christ of sorts to Rock music lovers) that it takes guts to admit that there were actually very decent singers, groups and composers around those days. The French Group Voyage comes to mind as one good example. Not that every song I hear on this CD is a gem, of course. But I still can't help enjoying the unpretentious upbeat quality of their catchier songs such as "Let's Fly Away" (I suspect that particular song has some suspicious parallels to Berlin's "There's No Business Like Show Business"), "Tahiti" and "Souvenirs". These songs are not only catchy, but sometimes carry complex and even daring harmonies. Granted, this CD brings back a lot of good memories. But since I studied music, I believe I can be fairly objective in saying that Voyage had some good stuff to offer.

4 out of 5 stars Disco Beat, of course, BUT...........2005-03-30

I really bought this for only one song, "Tahiti, Tahiti". I'm making my music collection and recollected this song many years ago. I called up several radio stations after I could not find this song on MusicMatch, Connect, or Tower Records.

One disc jockey remembered the tune I hummed to him and he mentioned the group's name. I took it from there. After ascertaining this was the song (30 second sample) I remembered, I bought it from Amazon!

This song has the wonderful harmony of Polynesians when they sing in groups, such as in Samoa. Slightly raucous, definitely mellifluous, and ultimately joyful! So Polynesian, so happy! If this song can't put a smile in your spirit, I don't know what will.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2004-11-06

These tracks take me back to 1978. I remember the DJ at Januaries in White Plain, NY blasting the finale of "From East to West". We would leave the club and our ears would be ringing. My favorite track is "Lady America" which got years of club play in NY. Definitely one of the "best of" collections.

5 out of 5 stars good for special efx for a movie-for those.......2003-01-28

this music souvenirs should be used as a movie scene, not just bringing back old memories, but old items that used to be thrown away. Maybe they should bring back what is old and made anew.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Believe It.......2005-12-21

Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts. It doesn't get better (or didn't) than these guys for college memories. My first night at Sewanee as a freshman, we all motored over to listen to a band that our fathers told us about. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, these songs live on after the death of the frontman, Doug Clark.

Long live the stories, the laughs, and the heritage.

If you went to school any time in the past 47 years, pick this up. It will take you back.

5 out of 5 stars Still A Fan.......2002-04-01

I first heard to the Hot Nuts (on a record) when I was in college some 35 years ago. I still find myself singing their songs and remembering the many laughs we all had listening to their "music." I was thrilled when I found this CD as the old record I had is long gone.

5 out of 5 stars Classic R&B Good Time Rauncy Party Band.......2001-10-03

I first heard these guys on record at SUNY Brockport in 1966. I knew we had to get them to play live on campus. We booked them but at the last minute, the uptight college admin said we couldn't have them on campus. We hired out the old roller-rink and packed in at least 700 people. The Hot Nuts arrived in town in a big old shocking pink tour bus and literally rocked the joint. They alternated sets with the "humor songs" followed by a ballsy R&B horn band rockin set. People were impressed by their musicianship and polish for a supposed "blue" group. What a blast. These guys could party. The CD covers all of the songs they played in concert plus my favorite "Baby, let me bang your box" which came out a few years later. What memories this CD brings back! I wish I could see them live one more time! 5 big stars in my book.

5 out of 5 stars This is one GREAT CD........2000-05-23

The Hot Nuts are a very good R&B band. I first got hooked on the 45 of "Baby Let Me Bang Your Box" and I've never looked back. This recording sounds remarkably well, considering the age and source of the tapes that were used to make this CD. I hope that more things are released by Doug Clark And The Hot Nuts.

5 out of 5 stars Still as funny today.......2000-04-23

I remember hearing these songs for the first time on 8 tracks. The songs are very humerous and they make me laugh as much today as they did back in the 60's. I recommend this C.D. to anyone who would like to hear a little ribald humor. If it doesn't make you laugh you're dead.

A FEW OF THE SONGS ARE GREAT, BUT I WAS TURNED OFF WITH SO MANY RAP TYPE SOUNDS THAT SOUND THE SAME, OVER AND OVER. THE WORST WAS THE HEAVY BREATHING AND MOANING SONG--WOULDN'T HE RATHER HEAR YOU? WE DON'T NEED THREE OF US. THE MOANING IS A DISTRACTION FROM THE MUSIC--HOW DO YOU DANCE TO MOANING?

1 out of 5 stars You call this strip club music?.......2004-02-13

Only 2 maybe 3 songs on this cd qualifies as strip club music. "B*Tch, Shake that A**" from dj Boss Pimp is REAL strip club music, this ain't.

This is a great compilation by all the original artists. It's great to find all these songs in one place...definetly a party favorite.

When I first brought this CD into the office, everybody thought I was nuts. After just one listen, it became everyone's favorite. The music is sexy, funny, and funky. It is traditional in the office that we play this CD in the late afternoon when everyone's tired and needs a little pep. Everyone sings along to "Superfreak", "Brick House", and "Strokin'".

When I bought "Strip Jointz 2", all the guys went crazy! That is now the office's second favorite CD. These CDs are highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars A LOVELY LISTEN, BUT I WAS NOT FEELING SOME OF THE 80S STUFF.......2007-03-11

this joint was bumpin' for the most part, however, for me, i would've focussed more on their 70s material and left out a great bit of that 80s stuff. YOU SEXY THING is one of the groovinest songs i have ever heard period. i also love EMMA, the original BROTHER LOUIE, DISCO QUEEN (sampled like crazy), and others i cannot think of, dang!!!!! if you that british thing in your funk/rock music, then you will dig this for sure. if you prefer their earlier material, then find a collection that focuses on that. the one i saw omits BROTHER LOUIE, which is a no no for me.

5 out of 5 stars Classic seventies soul.......2000-03-21

It has been a long long time since I had the chance to listen to anything by Hot Chocolate, since my vinyl is all stored away in a closet. I forgot how much I missed these guys. H.C. was everywhere on the radio in the seventies, with good reason. Happily, this collection has most of their best work.

The poignant "Emma", even leaving the 'message' aside shows their vocal abilities; deep and lush. But these fellas surely could burn down the house, and did so: "Every One's a Winner" is a classic, as is the now over-used "You Sexy Thing". They jam through "Don't Stop it Now", and "Could've Been a Lady" and even "Disco Queen". One of my personal favorites is "So You Win Again" for every one of us lucky guys who has been crushed by some gal (not to be confused with the similarly titled and messaged Hank Williams classic).

Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2000-02-27

Your sexy thing! My 20 year old son heard it on a commercial. I ordered the CD for him! Nice to know our young appreciate good music, such as Hot Chocolate!

5 out of 5 stars The music is a part of every listener's being, its fantastic.......1999-06-06

I have been listening to the Hot Chocolate since the late 70s, this is 1999 and the music is still very fresh in my whole Being. It is a Gold that everyone needs to have.
