This album is a blessing.......2007-07-22
I truly love this album. It is a blessing to hear old songs performed in new ways and the original songs sound great too. The ministry Selah has had is anointed.
Uplifting and Inspiring.......2007-07-05
Selah's final album with vocalist Nicol Sponberg is both inspiring and uplifting. I've listened to it so much, my family knows all the words. I've also bought several copies for friends. The voices of the brother sister team blend so beautifully, it is a shame that Nicol will be moving on. The new singer does not have the same soulful style; so enjoy this album and hope Nicol will be back for an encore.
God used this CD in my life!.......2007-01-27
I went through a tough time with health, and I was pretty discouraged. As I prayed each morning, I found myself turning on this CD and learning all the words to each song. Day after day for months, I listened to it and sang along. The lyrics speak of reverence for God, trust in Him, hope, joy, salvation. God used this CD to minister to me during this time, and I am going to give it to others. Thanks, Selah, for using your fabulous singing gifts for God's glory!
Awesome Album.......2007-01-16
Everything Selah does is great. Absolutely love this album. Can't play it enough!!
Awesome CD!!.......2007-01-12
I had no other Selah music when I purchased this "Hiding Place" CD, and I was very impressed when I first listened to it. I own many Christian music CDs and I would rate this CD in the top 2 or 3 of all the CDs I own. The vocals are beautiful and the accompanying music is also beautiful. The CD contains some neat original music and fantastic arrangements of old favorites like "I Need Thee Every Hour". "You Raise Me Up" and "You Are My Hiding Place" are wonderful. I would recommend this CD to anyone who is even remotely interested in Christian music!

Pleasantly Amazed.......2007-07-23
When I purchased this CD, I really wasn't expecting much. Before buying this CD, I had never heard any of their songs, and even moreso, have never even heard of the band. I purchased the CD expecting to hear another Fall Out Boy wannabe band, but I was pleasantly surprised. The Slow, Melodic tunes actually are very cheery and the songs are very well arranged. My favorite would be 'Tired and Uninspired'
Better than i expected........2007-07-15
I really, really dig this new album from my american heart... although after AP magazine absolutly ripped it in there review i was kinda skeptic, but i bought it anyways cause ive been a fan of the band for some time and i have to say i was pleasanlty surprised to find how good this album is! However i found it is quite a bit slower than the first album, but the blues undertones "which i love" are what does it for me... and you can also tell its the same band, no drastic changing "which is also a good thing"... if you liked the first album then youll like this one as well... its not gonna change the world but its one of those cds that just makes u feel good! go pick it up and youll see for yourself! its well worth the money.

Don Moen's huge contribution ...................2007-02-13
Don Moen's huge contribution to modern Christian music is undeniable. His discography has no less than 24 albums covering over 20 years and as an executive producer for Integrity Music he has rubberstamped numerous other albums. Personal sales alone surpass five million units and he has had a hand in some of the most sung worship songs in the global church over the past two decades. As a Praise &Worship leader, he is considered to be one of the main frontrunners.
Musically, Hiding Place, is a sonic masterpiece; the work of an old master with every brushstroke correct in texture and intent. Search in vain for audible flaws. However perfection can be a cold and distant friend at times, requiring time and effort to fully understand and embrace. For me Hiding Place is such. The songs, except `Fresh Fire', are of a similar worship tempo and delivery and Don Moen's vocal is without embellishment - while this is great for recording songs as the writer intends, it doesn't give to memorable performances, even more so for a studio-based album.
That saying, `All The Earth', `With A Thankful Heart', `Hear Us From Heaven' and `Breakthrough' are notable and, with the others, may well find their way onto projector slides in many churches.
Hiding Place features sincerely beautiful tracks worth hearing in their true form. Though erring towards technical merit than artistic performance, Hiding Place is still more than a `For Fans Only' album
A live worship album, without the audience.......2006-12-10
Oh, that Don Moen. Even when you take one of evangelical Christianity's best known worship leaders into a recording studio, it still sounds like he's in a church full of worshippers. Hiding Place, his first studio album (as far as I know) has Don still doing little monologues in the middle of songs and saying the words to the next line of lyrics before singing them. In other words, he's doing exactly what he does in concert. It's kinda amusing to hear.
But what about the material? I own (and reviewed on Amazon) his last three projects and each had at least one song that absolutely moved me into a place of tearful worship. I'm still hoping that happens with Hiding Place. So far, nothing's done that and I must admit, this album has a lot of unmemorable, slow to mid-tempo songs that lack in energy. But maybe I just have to hear the album some more.
Each Song Reminds You of God's Watchcare.......2006-11-02
If your spiritual life needs a boost, I highly recommend Don Moen's HIDING PLACE. The series of songs will gently lead you into God's presence. As the final song on the album, Still/ Be Still says, "When the oceans rise and thunders roar, I will soar with you above the storm. Father, you are king over the flood, and I will be still and know you are God."
No matter where you are on the journey of life, these words will strengthen you and guide you. Get HIDING PLACE.

Customer Reviews:
Too Much of a Good Thing?.......2003-10-24
I'm fairly familiar with two of the pianists in this collection - Jim Bajor, who is local, and Tom Barabas, to whom I have listened for several years. Until this album I haven't had the opportunity to listen to Stephen Jacob and Christine Brown. They all do their work in the styling of light jazz and easy listening that is often labeled incorrectly as New Age. Sometimes I feel that that phrase is used as a euphemism for anything that is pleasant, rather than its original definition, which had more to do with the meditative nature of the composition. In any case they are all accomplished at their art and worth listening to.
It is fair to report that all four musicians produce work that is melodic, technically interesting, and, yes, pleasant to here. None of the pieces demonstrate what I would call the technical brilliance of someone like Jordan Rudess, who drifts in and out of this genre but has a tendency towards keyboeard pyrotechnics. But neither is any of their work plodding or monotonic. 'Very listenable' may not be the highest compliment one can pay a musician, but it is way ahead of whatever is in third place.
If I have a complaint to make, it is that, despite different recording studios and instruments, the tonalities are so close that the entire album could have been the product of a single person. Barabas is slightly more adept, Bajor slightly more melodic, Jacob more controlled, etc., but there are no glaring contrasts. I'm not sure if this is a fault or not, since the result is certainly more than acceptable. Given all the overloads that life throws at us, I'm not sure complaining about too much goodness is entirely fair.
Outstanding collection of orginal piano work.......1998-10-22
This collection of original piano pieces is simply excellent. This instrumental is melodic, sweet, romantic, soothing and timeless. I find myself leaving this CD in my car day after day without tiring of the melodies. Beautiful!
Great CD for easy listening.......1998-08-24
I really find this music conducive to relaxation - I use it in my Shiatsu clinic.

This soundtrack has the best rendition of the song "Crying" that I have ever heard. K.D. Lang is not one of my favorites, but she outdid herself on this duet with Roy Orbison. This song makes this otherwise ho hum collection priceless.

Real dazzler.......2007-07-22
Albert Lee has been delighting me since his days with Heads Hands and Feet. I have always been a rock fan except for Albert Lee. His music is so well done and just plain pleasant to listen to that it draws me right in. His guitar skills are as good as anyone in the buisness. His guitar is always there but never overpowering. This CD contains material I originally bought on record more years ago than I'd care to admit. It still sounds as fresh and clean as it did all those years ago. I would recommend this CD to anyone with an ear for dazzling guitar work with a country flavor. His choice of material os first rate and the recording quality of the CD is also first rate. Buy this thing and you'll like it.
5 stars for the music, 1 star for the reissue.......2006-12-17
No doubt about the quality of the songs and Albert Lee's skills, but buyers should know that, in comparison to the original vinyl on A&M and Polydor, the stereo channels are swapped on all tracks on this CD reissue, thus being of no real interest to the serious collector. So 5 stars for the music and 1 star for those responsible for the remastering process.
Excellent.......2006-06-19
I have owned both these albums on vinyl since I saw Albert Lee playing with Eric Clapton on the "Money & Cigarettes" tour in the early '80's. Before that, Lee was a member of Emmylou Harris' Hot Band.
The guitar work on "Country Boy" is outstanding. Other favorites are "Sweet Little Lisa" and the John Hiatt-penned "Pink Bedroom".
This is highly recommended.
Finally in Print!.......2006-05-29
I had a cassette tape of a friend's version of these two albums. Even the vinyl was out of print and I have been waiting for their release on CD.
Hauntingly good tunes, and great early guitar work. Buy 'em.

Ah, can't blame Rankin for "Hiding Inside Himself".......2007-01-07
DOWN THE ROAD was likeable in a latter day James taylor kind of way.
For this effort Kenny welcomed back John Sebastian and David Crosby.
He is suported also by Lee Sklar, Robben Ford, Steve Lukather, and David Benoit,
And I liked his cover of TROUBLE MAN in particular.
A second Gaye cover (LET'S GET IT ON) was pretty tepid;
if this is how Kenny gets it on, he can't be much of a catch.
Reminded me of how Eric Clapton butchered LAYLA on his UNPLUGGED CD 25 yrs after shreading it with Derek & the Dominoes. CLAPTON turned a ripping cry of love about cuckling another man's wife (George Harrsion's)into a country ho-down on his own blasphomase live re-make. Yuck!
Overall Kenny Rankin's Hiding Inside Myself is directionless and sappy.
Um, Kenny, gee, can sound voacally like Boz Scaggs, but seems void of soul to these ears. File Rankin under "Smooth Jeez".
Like salsa with out the spice, i'll el paso on this one.
So glad I found you again!.......2005-10-23
Can't choose which track is my favorite! All of the songs that Kenny chose to record on this album are AMAZING! Probably not among his most popular - but by far and away his best! They cut to the bone! Owned the original album years ago, and couldn't find the cd until recently. Happily, with this album, I feel as though I've found a long lost friend!

Customer Reviews:
A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24
Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.
As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.
Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.
I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.
Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23
Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.
The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.
The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)
Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"
Final Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Customer Reviews:
Gold's Gold.......2007-06-04
Ernest Gold worked in Hollywood for several decades and was Stanley Kramer's composer of choice. While Kramer's films now seem heavyhanded and a trifle pompous (esp. "Inherit the Wind"), Gold always scored with a deft touch. "On the Beach" is, to my mind, his greatest achievement, a score that distills the tragedy and horror of the film's story of mankind's nuclear end without the melodramatic flourishes of Kramer's direction. Like the "Wind" score, which used "Give the Old-Time Religion" as a principal theme, this one famously is built on "Waltzing Matilda," and the range of emotions Gold's variations and the superb orchestrations create is amazing. I saw the movie in theater when I as 16 and bought the soundtrack in mono (on Roulette records) at the time. There was later a stereo issue which I was never able to find until this CD. It's fantastic and I highly recommend it. Frankly, I never listen to the score for "Santa Victoria," one of Kramer's waning 60s efforts.
On the Beach.......2005-09-27
The music that accompanies this profound story set in beautiful Melbourne literally at the end of the world is Ernest Gold's many variations of Waltzing Matilda, a tune that personifies a nation in a celebration of freedom and self esteem.
Stanley Kramer used Waltzing Matilda in a sequence set at a vacation area, sung raucously and then gently by a group of fishermen. He liked it so much that he directed Ernest Gould to make the tune a recurring theme throughout the film. Curiously, the original use of Waltzing Matilda is missing from the soundtrack album.
The liner notes on this CD are extensive and very interesting. They include the album covers from when these soundtracks were originally issued as LPs, On the Beach in 1959 and The Secret of Santa Vittoria in 1969 and 1986. This CD is clearly a labor of love for the producers. They've done a great job with material for which they obviously have tremendous respect.
Only 3000 copies of the CD were made, so get yours now.
The Wide Range of Ernest Gold.......2005-04-10
I firmly believe that one of the major criteria for a soundtrack is how well it plays apart from the film from which it is dervied. If that is the case, then we have a winner here with two different scores from two very different films. The score to the original film version of "On the Beach" (which I have desired for years) goes from romantic to frightening just like the film with its' message of nuclear doom. The themes for Peter and Mary and Moira are gentle pieces fillled with the sense of young love and a woman of the world. While it does seem that "Waltzing Matilda" is used too much, Gold's use of the song is very well done. The second film, "The Secret of Santa Vittoria" stands as well, too. The "Song of SV", again, is used quite a bit, but it is a nice, sweet, lyrical melody that doesn't grow dull with repetition. In short, if you liked the original "On the Beach" or "SSV", then these need to be in your collection. Well worth the price.
