Is there a rap fan out there who didn't like "The Message"? It took rap in an entirely new direction: while others were content to ride the "Double Dutch Bus" down to the disco, the Furious Five spoke out about social decay. The chorus of "The Message" ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head / Sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under") describes the effect of Reaganomics in ways that Dan Rather never could. Of course, Grandmaster Flash and company weren't against partying. In fact, they cut some of the best party tracks in the genre's history ("Freedom," "The Birthday Party"), along with some battle raps ("Step Off," "Showdown") to complete the package. Copyright restrictions probably kept the beat-edit classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" off the track listing. Still, one glaring omission isn't reason enough not to pick this up. --Todd Inoue

GRANDMASTER FLASH & FURIOUS FIVE.......2007-05-17
AN ABSOLUTE MUST FOR RAP OLD SCHOOLER'S. DELIVERY TIMEFRAME IS OUTSTANDING.
Sure-fire Collector's Item.......2007-03-12
I can't imagine a rap fan out there who would argue that Grandmaster Flash & Furious Five were not one of the best of all-time. Recognized as one of the pioneers of rap, particularly for turning rap into mainstream music, Grandmaster Flash should be respected for his work and ability to work with multitude of talents. "The Message" has to be regarded as one of the most popular rap songs of all time, and possibly in any type of music. That hit has been re-made, mixed, and sampled so much that even youngsters that were born after the hit was recorded will recognize the sounds. "Step Off" was also a hit during the break-dance era of the '80's, and many fans found that song more enjoyable than given credit for. Speaking of enjoyable hits, who didn't enjoy "Beat Street" (from the movie Beat Street) back in those days? It has to be regarded as one of the most fun rap songs to memorize, and "New York, New York" is another one that many enjoy rapping themselves. "White Lines" is a hit that many initially had no idea what the meaning of the song was supposed to be, but many figured it out after a while, once drug usage in urban areas of the country became heavily exposed to the mainstream audiences. Original lyrics, street-cred, hip beats/sounds, and strong social messages... Nothing seems to be missing in this compilation. If you like old school, make sure you add this one!
The Beginning of an Era .......2006-07-18
If you consider yourself a hip-hip fan (espically if you listen to most of todays garbage pop fake hip-hop, this is a must that you have this in your collection. Grandmaster Flash was one of the pioneers of hip-hop and even though this collection of songs was taken from the early 80's, it still holds up with its rawness. Its a shame that hip-hop has reached what it is today and the just arent enough hip-hop artist that do it just for the love of the music. Its a cruel world today in the music bizz, as most of the hip-hop artist of today are creations of some billion dollar record company and signs them to be the next MTV music hit. If you want raw, no nonsense hip-hop from the early days before artist cared about being #1 on TRL, this is a great place to start. ENJOY
Grandmaster cuts faster.......2005-11-01
Extraordinary music. Listen to what DJ GM Flash puts together: the grooves are so carefully fashioned and leap out at you time and again. In particular I've never heard a funkier slap bass sound - ever.
And let's talk MCs. Why don't rappers these days attack the mike anymore like these guys did? Are they afraid it's not cool to be energetic? Well no wonder no one dances to rap music anymore. But when you listen to this - the grooves and the punchy vocals - you will definitely move your body.
Only problem is: when you get hold of any other Hip Hop after this you'll be disappointed that the DJs don't cut as fast and clean as this Grandmaster.
The Quintessential 'Best Of' Collection.......2005-06-14
Like many of you, I've only heard "The Message" prior to purchasing this incredible 'best of' collection. As you probably know, Grandmaster Flash and company were recording the most popular rap songs in the early 80s. Most of these songs are stunningly wild and fun party jams. But in 1982, they released "The Message", which is considered to be the first rap song to be pushed from a novelty party jam, to a chilling prophecy, featuring effective social commentary. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five built a rock solid bridge for Run-D.M.C. to step in, and push their "Message" even further, which eventually brought the hardcore edge to hip-hop. Whether you know it or now, their presence is still felt to this day, since hip-hop hasn't made that drastic of a leap since Run-D.M.C. (that's quite debatable). It also helped that the production was flawlessly perfect. It featured dub, electro, and R&B that was sure to hook nearly every listener of urban radio.
So if you're in the same boat as me, you're probably asking yourself, "Are their any other good songs from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five?". Well, the answer is yes. This is probably the best single disc best of collection you'll find from these guys. These are long infectious party jams. Many of which include the artillery of a large emcee battle, such as the epic Furious Five / Sugarhill Gang collaboration of "Showdown". A song I didn't think I'd like given the title, "The Birthday Party", actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Although, "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" would have to be one of the most under-appreciated rap songs of all time. It's got one of the most clever attacks on the compilation, and will surely please any and all hip-hop lovers. They do tackle a bit more social commentary on tracks like "New York New York" and "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)". The latter features hard hitting lyrics about the dangers of drug use, and probably the most effective lyrics in it's time, given the subject matter. The only knock I have on the album is the first track, "Step Off Megamix". It's merely a "megamix" of their most popular songs thrown into one track (recorded in 1994). It would have been nicer if they would have thrown in a old-school jam up front, or at least put this track at the end, since the original versions shine much brighter throughout the remainder of the album.
Overall, if you're into old-school rap, this is a great listen. It's chalk-full of groundbreaking historical material. If you're at all interested in the evolution of rap, from the pre-Run-D.M.C. days, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. One could only be happier about the completeness of this collection.

old school for real.......2006-03-03
this cd brings back memories of how fun it was to go rollerskating and various parties back in the day also how music was at its purest form. super rymes the long version is the hard to get song. also my favorite is divine sounds what people do for money oh oh and don't forget request line. this cd is a must have if you love real rap untampered with........
A personal classic.......2005-10-23
I bought this album in 1995, when I was a senior in high school. Up until that time, my exposure to music made before 1985 was limited to my parents' classic rock. This album blew me away, and opened the floodgates to a whole new world of music to me.
At the time this came out, the hip-hop pioneers were sort of forgotten; the 'old-school' revolution in underground hip-hop hadn't yet occurred. In my point of view, the Rhino compilations had a big impact in ensuring the founders of hip-hop weren't lost.
Much thanks to the folks at Rhino for putting this together.
As to the music, if you're a fan of hip-hop, it's really imperative you know 'Rapper's Delight,' 'The Breaks,' and 'The Message.' There are also couple of obscure tracks that are really interesting to hear. The album cost is worth the education.
Check out these mic skills and deep lyrics.......2005-09-13
This what Rap is all about. Songs that actually make a difference in the world, performed by rappers who actually have talent. Don't we all wish "hip hop" artists of today possessed half the talent these OG's do? I'm hoping DJ Run's new CD that hits stores in October will inject some life into today's rap scene. It's bound to be light years ahead of the crap most young bucks are trying to pass off as mic skills today. This may be the perfect compilation to get in touch with rap's roots. I just wish they would have included It's Like That on it...then it would have been flawless. Man, how I miss Jay!
Should have been all 12" versions..........2005-08-13
Street Jams is a great series EXCEPT for the fact that it doesn't use all the 12" versions. 80s rap was just as heavily influenced by the 12" single as other genres of music. Track times on this volume are:
1. Skanless (4:27)
2. rapper's delight (14:25)
3. the breaks (6:29)
4. sucker DJs (3:27)
5. request line (4:47)
6. what people do for money (4:02)
7. adventures of super rhyme (10:55)
8. king of the beat (3:09)
9. the message (6:33)
10. friends (4:06)
11. one for the treble (6:30)
12. the pure (3:10)

Well, it rocks this babe.......2006-02-26
This is an amazing album. I think that even people who are unfamiliar or new to folk will love this disc. They love what they're doing, and it comes through in every song. Joyful. Excellent for dancing around while folding laundry. :)
Rockin'.......2005-08-30
This album rocks. I was lucky enough to catch the Mammals live with Arlo Guthrie and they were absolutely fantastic.
Bluegrass Blast.......2004-06-15
The Mammals' sophomore effort is a blast of bluegrass-flavored energy performed with gusto. From the opener "Fall On My Knees," they attack the music with energy as Ruth Ungar sings, "You've told me more lies than there are stars in the sky; you'll never get to heaven when you die." "The Bush Boys" is a bit risky for a band to take a strong political position since part of your audience is not going to agree. However, if you're part of the population who are not fans of President Bush, this will seem hilarious as Mammals apes part of the "Mockingbird" tune, "Hush little baby, don't you cry, daddy's going to buy you an alibi; If that alibi don't work, daddy's going to bribe the county clerk; If that county clerk don't bribe, daddy's got Congress on his side; If that Congress still don't budge, daddy's in tight with a Supreme Court judge." It's heady stuff and may only be timely for a limited time. If Bush wins in the fall, Bush critics can enjoy this one for the next 4 years. Tao Rodriguez is the grandson of folk legend Pete Seeger and plays banjo, guitar & mandolin in the best folk tradition as on the instrumental "Reel Du Bebe." "Father William" is a dark tune about sins of the clergy. "Bad Shoes Blues" is a great kitchen sink protest song that combines overseas labor abuses, genetically engineered vegetables and pro-choice causes. The traditional "John Henry" is a tune that Tao learned from his grandpa, performed in an energetic reading of this traditional tune. "Pearls" is a standout track with an interesting lyric & a Dylanesque vocal reading by Michael Merenda. Ruth Ungar's "Tinderbox" is a haunting mournful melody, "There's a spark inside my mind that contradicts all the sparks that burn around it; one day it might be a fire if that far-off feeling ever found it." Pete Seeger's "Quite Early Morning" is given a loving gentle recitation. Mammals' "Rock That Babe" is a good set of folk tunes filled with energy and sterling musicianship. Enjoy!
rock this cd.......2004-05-26
The Mammals play with an incredible amount of energy, and this cd does the best job yet of capturing their dynamic style on disc. Ruth Ungar's vocals really shine on several of the tracks (notably "Fall on My Knees" and "Tinderbox"), not to mention her fiery fiddle (esp. on "Hellgate"). The addition of bass and drums to the more traditional old-timey instruments works much better than you might think--each is complementary, neither overwhelms the rest of the band, and the effect fits well with their propulsive style.
While I highly recommend this cd, I even more highly recommend seeing The Mammals live (check their website for touring info). They give one of the best shows that I've seen in any genre of music--Michael Merenda is a first-rate songwriter and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger's energy really gets the crowd engaged. They obviously love to play together, which makes for a great time all round!
Wow!.......2004-05-21
What an amazing group! From the vocals to the instrumental, these kids can play!! Mixing old time music with a new time flare, The Mammals are sure to be heard.

Copland's Eight Songs of Emily Dickinson comprise one of the finest song cycles by an American composer, and a perfect meeting of minds between poet and composer. Dickinson's verses and Copland's music alternate plain-spun honesty and wry humor with sudden, unpredictable bursts of passion and pain and a complete lack of false sentimentality. The Old American Songs are simply a good time and you'll recognize many of the tunes even if you haven't remembered the words. Hampson and Upshaw are two of the finest American singers alive, and they perform this music as though they have a proprietary interest in it. A terrific record. --David Hurwitz

Upbeat American Music Sung with Impeccable Style.......2006-02-24
Thomas Hampson has an amazing artistic range and this CD compilation shows his lighter side. The first time I heard him sing the children's nursery rhyme Fiddle I Fee, I laughed out loud. Who knew he did animal noises too? My six year old daughter also loves this compilaton.
Ambassadors of American Song.......2005-10-25
Baritone Thomas Hampson, soprano Dawn Upshaw, and Hugh Wolff conducting the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra combine in this memorable CD to offer a program featuring songs of the American composer, Aaron Copland (1900 --1990). While American popular song has spread worldwide, too many listeners remain unaware of American achievement in the realm of the art song.
To remedy this situation, Thomas Hampson is currently on tour under the auspices of the Library of Congress in a project describing the history of creativity in the United States. He has been described as the "Ambassador of American Song", has founded the Hampsong Foundation to promote the American art song, and works tirelessly to bring American song to the attention of a wide audience. Dawn Upshaw has enjoyed wide renown as an opera singer as well as a singer of song. I became familiar with Hugh Wolff during his tenure as the associate conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra under Rostropovich. For many years, he has conducted the highly-regarded St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. The combination of Copland, Hampson, Upshaw and Wolff on this CD is irresistable.
The CD features two groups of orchestral songs. Hampson performs Copland's "Old American Songs," two sets of five songs each that Copland arranged for small orchestra in 1955. These songs consist of American tunes of various origins that Copland transformed and arranged peerlessly for orchestra. In their naivity and Americana, these songs capture something precious in the spirit of the United States. The songs include the famous "Simple Gifts" that became the centerpiece of Copland's "Appalachian Spring." The collection includes sentimental love songs, ("Long Time Ago"), a humorous and timely political campaign song ("The Dodger") that Hampson seems particularly to enjoy, spirituals ("At the River"), children's songs, and ministrel songs ( a lively "Boatman's Dance" initially composed by Daniel Emmett, the composer of "Dixie"). It is difficult to think of a more appealing and accessible introduction to American song than this collection. Hampson sings with gusto and enthusiasm. He is obviously enjoying himself and the music.
Copland's orchestral setting of eight poems by Emily Dickinson offers a different form of art song. Copland initially set 12 Dickinson poems for voice and piano and arranged 8 of these settings for orchestra. These songs are thorough-composed and follow closely Dickinson's shifting and unconventional poetic meter. Ms. Upshaw sings in a declamatory, intense way. In common with the setting of American songs, Copland's Dickinson songs show a transparent, light orchestration in which the wind instruments, in particular, are used to great effect to set the stage for the music. Copland's settings and Ms. Upshaw's singing capture the enigmatic character of this difficult but beloved American poet. Dickinson's poems are untitled, and Copland generally took the opening lines as the title of his settings. Of the eight songs, "Heart we will forget him", singing of a frustrated love, has deep poignancy. Dickinson's feelings and ambivalences towards religion are explored in "The World Feels Dusty", "Going to Heaven" and "The Chariot" which begins with the famous line, "Because I would not stop for Death, /He kindly stopped for me." Copland's setting of "Nature the Gentlest Mother" is for the most part in a pastoral mood with an opening solo for the flute. "There came a wind like a bugle" is dramatic and declamatory. Copland captures the angular, brisk character of a spring wind in "Dear March, Come In!" and the song "Sleep is supposed to be" features a moderatly paced melody with accompaniment in the winds. Copland's Dickinson settings are a high point in American art song.
The CD also includes two works for the St Chamber Orchestra alone. Copland's gentle "Down a Country Lane" is a work of under three minutes that has become one of the most famous of his compositions. The three selections from "Billy the Kid" with which the CD concludes show Copland integrating American folk tunes, in the manner of Charles Ives, with his own material and with masterful orchestration. Listen to the bassoon waltz theme in the opening "Waltz", the winds and brass exchanging themes in the plaintive "Prairie Night" and the big drum crashes and the use of the winds in the finale, "Celebration Dance".
The CD includes the texts of all the songs, together with French and German translations.
This CD will appeal to both new and experienced lovers of music. Hampson, together with Ms. Upshaw and Maestro Wolff, serve well as "Ambassadors of American Song" on this release.
This is one to share with friends.......2002-03-14
I've seen Thomas Hampson Live a couple of times, and I believe he has one of the most glorious voices in the world. If "Simple Gifts" doesn't make you a little weepy, your heart must be made of stone.
Two Cents from the English Teacher.......2001-12-05
I am a big fan of both Emily Dickinson and Dawn Upshaw, so I was really excited to see this CD with Dawn Upshaw singing arrangements (by Aaron Copland no less!) of eight super Emily Dickinson poems. Trying to interpret ED is no easy task (for an English teacher or a composer), and I think that Copland does a beautiful job of putting to music the thoughts and words of the recluse poet. Upshaw does a beautiful job of interpreting them vocally. Dickinson's poems have an energy and personal intensity that both Copland and Upshaw manage to capture. I use this CD every year with my juniors to show them a "classical" and musical side of literature. Quite frankly, I would rate it "five stars" just for these eight tracks--I rarely listen to the others, I'm sure to my loss. After reading the other reviews, I'll have to check them out. . . . I think Emily Dickinson would listen to these tracks, smile smirkily to herself, go back upstairs and write a poem about the experience. I think she would be pleased. . . .
A Parental Review -- Toddler Freindly American Songs.......2001-08-19
I have been thinking when is a good time to introduce Opera voice to my toddler daughter. I realized that it is not the timing issue, it is more a decision about the composition, melody and performance. And Thomas Hampson's American Songs is the hidden jewel. His interpretation of "Bought me a cat" (along with Hugh Wolff conducting Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra) is whimsical, sparkling, colorful, dynamic, delightful and toddler friendly. It is also a perfect exposure to fun and mighty part of American Music. However, I will wait a little bit longer before playing the other half of album, Dawn Upshaw's Dickinson poems, to my little one.

The rap continues-with edits..........2005-08-13
This third volume in an almost awesome series still doesn't bring us ALL the 12" versions of classic 80s rap tracks. Particularly frustrating to me is the long version of Step Off by the Furious Five. On my vinyl version, there's a break in which Melle Mel does a reprise of his "Chaka Kahn" rap from her hit "I Feel For You." But it's not on this version!!! Track times:
1. the show (6:39)
2. romeo (5:12)
3. step off (7:17)
4. jailhouse rap (8:31)
5. freaks come out at night (4:40)

DMC and DJ Run, Dum Ditty Dum Ditty Ditty Dum Dum!.......2005-08-09
If you can chant that title, then you should own this! This includes Run DMC's rare, classic non-album track HERE WE GO (Live at the Funhouse) which features our heroes rapping live off the soon-to-be famous Roxanne Roxanne beat (this cut was clearly inspired by the Cold Crush Bros. underground hit CC4 VS FANTASTIC FIVE, 1981). Another nonalbum smash at the time is Slick Rick and Dougie Fresh's classic THE SHOW with a slightly different ending than most fans of the time are familiar with (the famous flipside LA DI DA DI appears elsewhere). Other cuts, like BAD BOYS and UTFO's "Leader of the Pack" are just okay, but the above mentioned cuts make it worth the money.
Classic Roots.......2005-06-09
These are classic throw backs, this is where it all began people! Cuts like A.J. scratch, Marley scratch, and "Leaders of the pack" by U.T.F.O are priceless. I grew up on this music and at 31 I still enjoy it! This is the foundation of hip hop from the top!

Ok for Ol' Schoo' Listeners.......2007-05-29
Good stuff and nostalgic....however, I wish they would have had the extended version of everything (specifically Royal Cash's Radioactive). Oh well...
On a whole, a good list of stuff for the high side 30-somethings to remember their youth!
In some ways, the best of the worst.......2005-06-05
Anyone familiar with my postings knows that I am an absolute HATER of the high-tech drek and computerized synthesizer-banging garbage that flooded the airwaves and dancefloors as well as assaulting eardrums and good taste in the early 80s. But there are a few good tunes here. Royal Cash's "Radio Activity" was to me the best of this genre because as much as I despise synthesized music, this was a clever, catchy, and funky little tune filled with funny catch-phrases (who that-who that-who that trying to be bad) and comedy routines ("I have an electronic stereo..it has dolby noise reduction..." if you remember the tune from 1983-84, I need not say more). Some decent rap from Whodini is on "5 minutes of Funk" and a little bit of good R&b is on Skyy's "Call Me" and "Walking on Sunshine," but as far as "Shackles on My Feet," "Tour De France," etc. ad nauseum...YECCHH!!! They can keep that!
2 Thumbs Up.......2000-01-05
WOW! What a great CD! Bring back the 80's man! This CD has all of the songs from the earily 80's Break Dancing Era. I enjoyed Radioactivity and Tour De France the most. "Let's Jam, Let's Jam Radioactivity" and "Pal la vue misure, Tour De France Tour De France" (smile). I was a 3rd grade break dancing and pop locking when these songs were released back in 1983. Last, "Shackles" by R.J.'s Latest Arrival was the best break dance song ever written. This is the best CD I have ever purchased that has the 3 most popular break dance and pop locking songs from that time period. This is a must buy and I highly recommend this CD because it contains some of the songs and artist who pioneered Rap and Hip Hop with Electronic Beats, Drum machines, and Mixing and Scratching. "Shackles on my feet, won't let me dance, Shackles on my feet won't let me stand, turn up the music that has a nice beat, Turn it up loud and take these shackles off my feet." Can you see me break dancing I am so happy I finally found these song after years of searching for the lost 12 inch records and CDs(smile and jam with me)?

Album Description
On their self-titled debut disc, KAMCHATKA (an incredibly kool power trio "riff machine" from Sweden) deliver an awesome set (14 trax - 59 mins.) of heavy duty, get-down bluesy, cycodelic, authentic, retro-70's heavy guitar power trio "riffage" that is unbelievably killer. KAMCHATKA is brain-damaing beyond belief and the REAL deal when it comes down to outstanding killer power trio rock. KAMCHATKA features three amazing players in the form of Thomas Andersson on guitar & vocals, Rojer Ojersson on bass & vocals and Tobias Strandvik on drums. The band work together as a whole musical unit combining guitar-melting solos, slicked-up pseudo-Hendrix grooves with an incredibly powerful tight rhythm section to create a sound that is pure, convincing and all their own. Hitting hard with a fantastic, hard driving, raw, blistering, all-out musical assault and sounding like they landed from 1973, KAMCHATKA have legitimately created an authentic, classic retro-70's heavy guitar power trio vibe.
Thomas Andersson is an amazing gifted bluesy axeripper who makes a powerful musical statement on the guitar. His playing is right up there with the best of them. Serious heavy guitar freaks that are in tune with the Grooveyard know that we are heavily into and support outstanding Swedish axemasters like Clas Yngstrom (SKY HIGH), Emil Fredholm & Christian Neppenstrom of PLANKTON, Thomas Larsson, Janne Stark, etc. Thomas Andersson of KAMCHATKA is no exception and his killer guitarwork is in the same league as those awesome players. They take the guitar seriously in Sweden and stick to their guns (musical roots) without following the latest fads & musical trends. Swedish axerippers are all about the guitar and they know what time of day it is when it comes down to REAL guitar playing. There must be something in the water over there in Sweden!
The KAMCHATKA disc is HIGHLY recommeded to fans of HENDRIX (THE MAN!), TROWER, FRANK MARINO & MAHOGANY RUSH, CREAM, MOUNTAIN, JOHNNY WINTER, CACTUS, STRAY DOG, CAPTAIN BEYOND, BUDGIE and new school power trio players like ERIC GALES, WARREN HAYNES (GOV'T MULE) and FIREBIRD, to name a few. Imagine if FRANK MARINO & TROWER jammed with HENDRIX & CREAM in MAHOGANY RUSH-LAND and you start to get the "musical picture". Kamchatka are the REAL deal when it comes down to seventies guitar god rock and their awesome "live in the studio" version of "I Love Everybody" by JOHNNY WINTER is worth the price of admission alone and will make a true believer out of you.
The bottom line is that KAMCHATKA are the real deal when it comes down to classic, outstanding bluesy heavy guitar power trio rock and if you dig this super-sonic way-kool style of music, then look no further than the mega-awesome debut disc by KAMCHATKA. Exclusively released on GROOVEYARD RECORDS, a new label dedicated to outstanding TOTAL GUITAR music from around the world.

Very HENDRIX and very good.......2006-12-27
Not quite up to the standard of PLANKTON ( who is ), but not far behind. This is very much in the best tradition of CREAM / HENDRIX and other guitar 3 piece groups from the past. Saying that, these guys don't copy, they create. Although rooted in the classic bands from the past, their sound is more 2005 than 1970.
Getting better with every listen and should appeal to all fans of the aforementioned artists.
heavy blues 70s style.......2006-08-16
Another winner from my favorite record label. This band offers up some amazing hevy guitar playing and the bottom is down and dirty. If you like cream mountain or frank marino this is for you.

Odds and ends.......2007-07-26
As the other reviewer mentions, this CD is the last of the Ligeti Project and collects several miscellaneous works and arrangements (with a wide variety of performers as well). I would've much rather seen a new work on here, rather than the 20 minutes spent on Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures again - nevertheless, it's a good performance of a bizarre 'vocal' work sure to have you laughing out loud. The Sonata for Cello Solo is excellent, and contrary to the other reviewer, I find the ballroom dances delightful. Artikulation for tape is short and curious. It's nothing on Xenakis.
This certainly isn't a bad CD, it just isn't nearly as good as some of the other volumes. I'd get it just because I'm a completist - but I wouldn't regret buying it, either.
The last, and least, of the Ligeti Project.......2004-09-28
LIGETI PROJECT V marks the end of the collection--first started by Sony's "Gyorgy Ligeti Edition"--of Gyorgy Ligeti's works in performances overseen by the composer himself. This final installment contains new renditions of some material that has appeared before in the collection, as well as several early works, all performed as usual by the Asko and Schoenberg ensembles. I found it to be somewhat disappointing for what is present, since a lot of this has appeared before in only slightly different form, and even for for what was *not* included.
"Aventures" and "Nouvelles Aventures" are an evolution beyond Ligeti's early vocal works. Ligeti no longer uses a specific text to express emotion, instead inventing his own universal language. Though the words the singers are singing (written with IPA in the score) are nonsensical, the basic emotions come through quite clearly in this drama. As fascinating as the experiment is, however, it is somewhat frustrating to simply listen to a recording, as the visual element is lost. The baritone, Omar Ebrahim, may be familiar to some from his spoken-word performance in Peter Eotvos' "Sketches of a conversation". These two pieces have appeared before on "Gyorgy Ligeti Edition 4: Vocal Works", but this is a live recording and apparently it creates such a different ambience that the pieces are worth including again.
"Artikulation" is one of Ligeti's three forays into electronic music, composed in Cologne in 1958 after Ligeti had fled Hungary. The piece was realised under the patronship of Karlheinz Stockhausen and a young Cornelius Cardew, who would later go on to become England's first Maoist composer, served as recording engineer. This is the original recording from 1958, but it has been down-mixed from quadraphonic to stereo. It's interesting listening, though I would have liked to see the project try to create a new "performance."
I was eagerly awaiting the appearance of "Sonata for Cello Solo." It is one of Ligeti's earliest works, with a first Dialogo composed while he was a student at the conservatory in Cluj. It is one of the most beautiful things Ligeti has ever done. A Capriccio followed five years later, and foretells Ligeti's avant-garde string works. This forms, I think, the best piece on this disc. David Gerinas' performance is great, but check out the recent reissue on DG as well.
"Musica Ricercata", originally a piano sequence written in the 1950's, appears here in an arrangement by instrumentalist May Bonnay for bayan, a type of Russian accordian for which Sofia Gubaidulina also has composed. Only eight pieces from the original work are represented, "Mesto, rigide e cerimoniale" would be, I suppose, too challenging for an accordian arrangement. "Musica Ricercata" would have been just fine had Ligeti not gone on to write his stunning Piano Etudes, but I find the piece to be rather uninventive and this bayan arrangement unappealing.
"The Big Turtle Fanfare from the South China Sea" is a short (45-second) piece for solo trumpet, part of the score Ligeti had composed for a puppet opera in the early 1950's. It is merely a cute curiosity and adds little to the disc.
"Balada Si Joc" dates from Ligeti's brief return to his native Transylvania in 1950 for ethnomusical studies. Faux folk music, it contains much of the same material as "Concert Romanesc". The piece has appeared before on "Gyorgy Ligeti Edition 1: String Quartets and Duets", but the arrangement here is for school orchestra and sounds much richer and fuller.
I don't even know what to say about ""Regi Magyar Tarsas Tancok" (Old Hungarian Ballroom Dances). They are not even Ligeti's own work, but rather arrangements by him of the schmaltzy dancehall hits of the Biedermeier period (around 1800). This music is so very dull, not something I want to hear on a disc with Ligeti's name on it. Coming last, it leaves one with a bad impression of this final installment.
All in all, I'm unhappy that the series is over. There are still works yet to be collected, such as his electronic piece "Glissandi" supressed as juvenalia, Book Three of his Piano Etudes, and the variant arrangement of "Ramifications". Still, the entire Ligeti Project series is worth collecting (as is the earlier Gyorgy Ligeti Edition on Sony). The one gets a two-star rating mostly because of the lackluster ballroom dances and the missing Etudes, and the one thing that really saves it is the "Cello Sonata" and "Artikulation". Pick it up after you've got all the others.
