5 out of 5 stars Serious fun.......2002-11-09

"Cows With Guns" is one of the best humor-with-a-point songs I've heard since the days of Tom Lehrer. Perfectly paced, wonderfully witty, carefully self-aware ("Bad cow pun..."), and carrying a serious message wrapped in gentle and imaginative humor. Nicely done, Mr. Lyons -- and I'm glad to know that the chickens in choppers are on our side.

1 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2002-10-29

I don't get it. I've listened to as much of this guy's music as I could stomach. His voice is certainly nothing to write home about. The music is amateurish/boring as hell. I think I pretty much resonate with what he has to say -- but I don't find anything clever or engaging in the way he says it.
Maybe he's one of those artists you have to see live to really appreciate. I have to admit that from his pictures, he seems to have great hair (Dana, dude - who's your stylist?)
Even though it was written more than a generation ago,I find Tom Lehrer's stuff from the 60's (TWTWTW) to be far more clever, insightful, musically interesting (although he couldn't sing worth a damn either), and relevant.

5 out of 5 stars Share with all ages.......2001-05-20

I saw Dana perform last night to an small audience that spanned 3 years-old to 85. He absolutely captivated everyone. Small girls, chin on hands watched without moving. Teenaged boys stopped showing off. Older women clapped their hands. Every face had a smile. When it came to the sing-alongs, even the stuffiest old guys belowed out the words. This is fun music but with serious messages about how we live. Parents get this CD (or tape) and share with your kids, even the grown ones. The rest of you, share it with your friends. I bought this CD from Dana and played it all the way home. Oh yes, when I went into the show, I had no idea who this guy was.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Sing-a-long.......2000-11-30

Our entire family loved this tape. We played on an 8-hour car ride, coming and going, and it was super. Our kids (ages 6 and 8) are still singing these songs around the house. The adults appreciate the messages in the songs, and the kids love the tunes. Some of the lyrics may be considered "PG," but the humor and the message make them appropriate.

Product Description

This compilation of 13 patriotic and inspirational originals features a wide variety of styles, including Rock, Country, Christian, Pop and Easy Listening. These songs were collected from artists all over the USA from California to New York to Tennessee and Louisiana. The first single, originally a tribute to Ronald Regan, is “We Will Not Forget” written by Bud Tower and Buck Provosty and performed by Buddy Jewell and The Nashville Players. This track is a worthy tribute to the quiet dignity of those who have served our country and focuses on our nation’s newfound respect for veterans.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tribute Album!!!.......2003-05-31

Heard We Will Not Forget on the radio so I thought I would pick it up! What a great compilation of songs. I do alot of driving so I buy many compilation cd's and tapes because I don't have time to do it myself(or I'm just too lazy!). This CD has one great song after another. So if your feeling patriotic THIS IS THE DISC for you!! I checked out the label web site also, they have all the lyrics and artist Bios...great information. I'm a country fan so it was a great surprise to find 2 songs on this disc sung by Buddy Jewel that I just saw on TV for the Nashville Star contest!! Good job Frog & Scorpion I can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars The Complete CD.......2002-12-09

Well, a review of this material by me is probably unfair, but I am one of the writers that has a song on this CD and will remain anonymous. Originally.....I was a bit skeptical, when asked to be a part of this CD, my luck so far with music compilation ventures has been extremely unrewarding......to say the least! But when I put this album on my CD player and pushed number ONE, and then number TWO and so on and so on!! Boy, I was pleased as punch and so very proud to be a part of this assemblage of writers and artists of this caliber!! THANK YOU LORD for letting my song arrive on the doorsteps of Frog & Scorpion Records thru the listing at Taxi! And thank you to all the other songwriters, producers and singers on this project, I hope my song is as good as the rest that appear on this album........

Album Description

Though best known for his work in Town & Country, who have been experimenting in acoustic resonance, minimalist composition and world musics for the past seven years, Ben Vida has been a prominent player in the Chicago music scene, placing himself at the nexus between improvised and acoustic minimalist musics. He has played and recorded with Central Falls, Terminal 4, Pillow and Everyoned. Green Inferno is his second solo recording, a long-in-coming successor to Mpls., which was released on Brent Gutzeit's Boxmedia label in 1999. Boxmedia described Mpls. as "a record of delicate acoustic guitar compositions, soft melodic songs with hidden teeth." Green Inferno is a different beast, showing its teeth with dense percussive tracks and droning narcotic folk songs. Ben Vida describes it as an attempt to fuse all of his favorite aspects of the groups he has been playing in.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The real and most exciting janet jackson era.......2004-05-31

This era sums up the real janet jackson. Excellent album, excellent production, excellent vocals, excellent songwriting, excellent melodies, excellent harmonies, excellent beats, and excellent music videos, excellent choreography. Janet was indeed at her creative peak with this era and maintained it with janet and velvet rope, but after that, the albums and videos grew weak.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't know by now.......2002-12-02

I am the biggest Janet fan in the world. So naturally I would give this a five. There's nothing else I can say about it.

5 out of 5 stars Janet Jackson at the apex........2002-10-23

This edition of Janets creative apex, Rhythm Nation 1814, now comes with her collection of videos entitled "The Rhythm Nation" on DVD. I tell you, Janet has never been better than during this era that stretched from August of 1989 to well into 1991 and it's a classic that must always be available for the generations. Unfortunately she would sadly go downhill with the creative slide Janet, rebounding a bit with The Velvet Rope, before collapsing into musical limbo with the sorry All For You. I consider this Janets "Thriller".

The music is top-notch with sonic punch, loud slamming beats, strong vocals, both solo and chorus, and amazing and powerful songwriting and her first song she wrote all by herself "Black Cat" is truly angry and powerful especially with the loud crunchy heavy-metal guitars and sledgehammer beats. The albums theme, like we all know, is about how to counteract the wrongs in the world as the title track says. Not all of it is like this as some tracks are on the fun side. Alright fits into this category with it's stunning New Jack Swing beats, and cheering voices. Listening to this song, it makes me yearn so much for the Janet of this era again. Alright is Janet at the apex. The last three tracks are haunting ballads and far surpass almost every ballad she's done since(Not that they're all boring or bad). The first one, Lonely, is a dark haunting song with beautiful Spanish guitars and powerful lyrics and ambient atmosphere. The next one, Come Back To Me, continues the feel of Lonely but adding a bit of a more orchestral sound. There were two version both of which I like. The version on Design Of A Decade has dingling keyboards at the beginning, the parent album version has the haunting multilayered chorus at the beginning. I happen to like both but I like the multi-layered chorus version a little better. The last one, Someday Is Tonight, is Janets first true ... song by Janet. Where as they would get worse with each CD afterwards, SIT works perfectly and benifits by having a ominous stormy atmosphere, eerie melody, multi-layered chorus, drippy trancy beats, and also by not having any ridiculously graphic lyrics like All For You has(Would You Mind & Love Scene made me sick!). I love the muted trumpet playing by trumpeteer Herb Alpert.

....And now for the Rhythm Nation Compilation......

The DVD that comes with this edition of Rhythm Nation is a collection of Janets seven ground breaking videos and are absolutely amazing with the astounding choreography from Tina Landon and also I also loved her clad-in-black image too from this era in her career. In fact, while I might be recieving angry replies but I thought she looked alot prettier during this era than when she became a "...-kitten". My favorite videos are the dynamite Miss You Much with the classic chair routine, the dance army video of the title track, the carnival influenced Escapade, the 1920s Chicago style Alright, and Black Cat(Love those tight jeans and leather boots, Whew!). In fact, every video is classic. I watched the RN compilation in VHS and have worn out like two copies over the years and it's almost on the border of being an honor to have these amazing videos on DVD!

The next album, Janet, while good, was an artistic slide IMHO. The next one, The Velvet Rope, is a little better with some more creativity put into it. All For you on the other hand sounds like sorry excuse for record sales.

Her latter works are good but compared to Rhythm Nation 1814, I'm not nearly as impressed them like I am with this amazing, and unbelievable album. The only other album by Janet that comes close to being this good is Control and I hope they can re-release that album with a DVD of her videos from that era. Overall, while it may cost more with this edition, this CD/DVD set is a great buy. Even if you have Rhythm Nation 1814 already on it's older edition, this CD/DVD set should be bought as a companion to the other version. Don't throw out the older version of Rhythm Nation. Janet, we need more music like this from you again! And also get rid of the hip-hop dreck of All For You and make some more guitar based music. RN 1814, Control, Design Of A Decade, and The Velvet Rope are all you need to hear Janets strongest material. :)
