love this record.......2007-06-26
Cornelius is BAD!!! This CD is so beautiful-- always inventive and sonically striking. You'll hear something new everytime you listen to it. A true pioneer-- dig this record.
Good Content, Bad format.......2007-06-08
I'm a big Cornelius fan. His album Point is one of my all time top 10 cds. Sensuous is a good album too. Not quite at Point's level, but enjoyable all the same. However, this CD and the replacement that Amazon has sent me has a formatting error between tracks 8 (Omstart) and 9 (Beep It) where the crossfade between tracks gets cut out and goes to silence for approx .5 seconds. This is really annoying. Since Amazon sells a few different versions of this CD online, I'll mention that the 2 sent to me are "imports" and were manufactured by the label "EverLoving" (note: "Import", as I am located in U.S.) I don't know if this same problem occurs with other label printings or versions of Sensuous. My overall rating of this CD is a 3 (i.e. 4 for Cornelius' tracks, 2 for formatting problem).
Sensuality.......2007-04-24
It must be overwhelming for an artist like Cornelius to make a mega-masterpiece like "Point," and be expected to follow it up with something just as good, if not better.
And Cornelius manages to do pretty well with "Sensuous," his third full-length album, and his first in five long years. While it doesn't measure up to his last album, "Sensuous" does manage to be a charming, atmospheric little collection of quirky pop music.
It opens with the title track, an ambient little guitar melody that never goes anywhere much -- but it's redeemed by the staccato guitar and colourful sampling patchwork of "Fit Song." I suppose it's called that because Cornelius "fits" dozens of odd little sounds into the song, over the sputtery guitar and manic drums. It's wonderfully eccentric.
From there, Cornelius mingles electronic experimentation with sparkling sound effects and charming, almost childlike melodies. Hiccuping piano melodies and folky guitar, interrupted by digital blips and a CD spinning. Funky electronica that sparkles like a gem. Revving guitars that tumble into a heart-racing melody. Unstoppable "tick... tock" electropop. And a shimmering, soaring "Like A Rolling Stone," which sounds like wind chimes being diddled.
It takes a little while to listen to "Sensuous" objectively. The ghost of "Point" keeps looming over this album, and at first listen it's easy to think, "Oh, this isn't nearly as good as 'Point' was."
But as the album winds through soundscapes of the bizarre and beautiful, the real intent of "Sensuous" starts to come out. There are almost too many musical ideas crammed in here, with brief sparks of typical pop. Then Cornelius's offbeat jams move on and continue taking themselves apart.
The backbone of the music itself is plucked guitar, like a two-fingered street musician, but wrapped in heavy cocoons of shimmering synth, avant-garde stylings, and odd samples here and there. Cornelius's soft vocals bob in occasionally, usually singing some particular phrase ("Muuuuuu-siiiiiic...").
But let it be established that this isn't a GREAT album; the songs have little structure, and there's some songs that are definitely filler. It rides through on atmosphere and avant-garde beauty, and the complexities that begin to emerge after more than one listen -- feelings of drowsiness, sadness, complacency, and exuberance.
But even lesser Cornelius is better than most music, and while "Sensuous" may be his weakest work, it's still a beautiful piece of work. Definitely worth listening to -- just don't compare it to "Point."

"If you need a compilation to hold you over until the next installment in Sequoia's "Buddha-Lounge" series gets released, HOTEL TARA is the perfect place to take up residence. Like that series, the album features a luscious non-stop mix of ethnic-flavored grooves, spiritual essence and intoxicating beats compiled and mixed by the Gordon brothers. HOTEL TARA ups the "dreamy" quotient, creating an atmosphere that is at once peaceful and soulful. The beats are low-tempo and many of the songs have a touch of Indian instrumentation as well as a subtle retro-lounge flair. Artists include David and Steve Gordon, Gingko Garden, Althea W., Jaya Lakshmi, Artemisia and others. This is a great album for anyone looking for music that is mellow and cerebral - it is perfect for chilling out to."

Unwind with this..........2007-03-26
Smooth, sensous, soothing, and sultry. A couple of cuts a little on the "loungy" side but overall this is an excellent CD that delivers exactly what you would expect from the title. The quality of this stuff is definitely a cut above a lot of the other budda-lounge wannabes.
A maverick New Age/Eastern hybrid classic!.......2005-03-25
I am absolutely taken into the beauty and harmony that is the album "Hotel Tara". I first heard this at an independent CD store recently and after finding out who it was, I instantly bought the new album and I am proud of my choice of buying it. This album reminds me very strongly of the Earthtone collection series from years ago. After the apparent and unfortunate demise of the Earthtone label, Sequoia Records seems to have taken the torch and "Hotel Tara" is a powerful CD. "Apollo 13" is a highly eclectic track that incorporates voice effects of a NASA space mission with a gorgeous jazz/New Age groove. "Govinda Hari" is an electrifying song with haunting Eastern Indian voices and a very entrancing melody. This is such a wonderful CD and I highly recommend this.
Blissful Eastern Chill.......2005-03-10
Nothing less than superb ! This new titles from Sequoia Groove is a blissful voyage into the very best of Eastern influenced downtempo chill-out music. A provacative follow up to Sequoia's Buddha Lounge series. This album really transports the listener into some very exoctic and sensuous musical landscapes. I especially love the Jaya Lakshmi track "Govinda Hari" and "Apollo 13" by Joe Werineck which incorporates actual original recordings from the space mission into a lushly textured background of slow and sultry electonica. This is a great addition to any downtempo musical collection. If you like, Buddha Bar or Hotel De Costa you will love Hotel Tara.
The Ultimate Music for Sacred Lovers.......2005-02-10
David & Steve Gordon have done it again ! Just when you thought it could'nt get any better, these musical visionaries deepen the mix even further. Hotel Tara bills itself as "The Intimate Side of Buddha Lounge" and it certainly delivers on that promise. This is an exotic and enticing blend of traditional Eastern music with the very best that Western downtempo-electronica has to offer, featuring an superlative assortment of the very best Sequoia artists and some absolutely alluring new artists. Likely the most noteable being the lead track "L'Heure Verte/The Green Hour"from Artemisia, the new Steve Gordon solo project with it's distinctive tabla beat, exquisite tamboura, sensuous guitar and luminous vocals provided by Jaya Lakshmi whose "Govinda Hari" also graces the album. David Gordon's new solo track "Floating" is also fantastic, melding chill-out and smooth jazz effortlessly into this delightfully transcendent tune. My wife and I have now found our new favorite CD for our intimate encounters and Tantra sessions. These Sequoia Groove titles just keep getting better and better and this one is perfect suited for the the Sacred Lover. Keep them coming. Absolutely delightful.

Buddha Lounge Vol 4.......2007-01-15
Good chill tracks. I have all the other Buddha lounge CDs as well as Arabic Lounge, whe something works stick with it. Ilike this CD for warm up, Yoga, Pilates, stretching. Also good to chill to very calming rythems.
Chillin' With The Buddha.......2006-10-16
This is an interesting one, that is sort of outside my normal frame of reference. My girlfriend and I were in a "new-agey" store while on a road trip, and we were both sort of intrigued in the music that was playing, which turned out to be this album. I would consider this disc a combination of two genres of music which I am actually rather unfamiliar with-techno and world music. It actually comes together quite well; most of the selections on this compilation are somewhat obscure(to me, anyway) european trance or house DJs (again, I'm going to have to cite unfamiliarity with the current "hip" slang on this subject(*snicker*)which incorporate world music and chanting (in Arabic?) into undeniably modern drum beats and synth programming. There is also a fair amount of briefly-phrased but very melodic electric guitar reminiscent of Buckethead's "Electric Tears" or "Colma" albums...quite a soothing combination, although I could have done without one track, which is sung in French. Excellent music for just relaxing with friends or a glass of wine.
Keep it up Gordon Brothers, your Buddha series is perfect!.......2006-03-09
I was so pleased to see this top compilation series continue with even more great selections. Helen Horlyck's atmospheric vocals and J. Gad of Enigma fame on their track Cape Porcupine, is a great way to introduce this excellent collection of mood music. TYA shares an exotic atmosphere on Why. One And Twain by Ginkgo Garden is spatial and measured as Mueller-Key adds a melodic story. Touche' by TAU adds an inspired French groove. Samah livens up the grouping with Kilada's Arabic/Afro beat & vocals. Bhajya Sahita by Hands Upon the Black Earth has gentle vocals by Renee Petry along with a light-hearted beat by Bobby Cochran. The Gordon Brothers added one of my favorite tracks of theirs, with a club-remix of Empowered, giving a North American contemporary beat; as well with Descent to the Lowerworld, where the brothers always take me on a rewarding venture into deep Shamanic landscapes. Mangoville by David Gordon brings a gentle and instrumental track, which lends a joyful, lazy summer-like feel. With Northern Lights by Stella Maris, this obviously multi-talented group demonstrates their special brand of mystery-pop in both their vocals and melodies. The entrancing American group, the Moontrane Conductors, brings a wide multiplicity of soothing sounds with their In for the Night. Jaya Lakshmi & Deva Priyo hook up to weave together a Sanskrit chant into a rhythmic sway with a contemporary reward in Hamana Nale. And last but not least, Abraham Schenk wields a way among the electric in Sky Walk, which graces the end of this entrancing and soothing album. All together, this album has provided me with many soothing hours of aural enjoyment, and served as easy background music, when I have entertained friends. Keep it up Gordon Brothers, your Buddha series is perfect!
World Class Chill-out.......2006-03-06
Each Buddha-Lounge just keeps getting better. While I love them all, number four is by far my fav! It opens with a track from ACHILLEA which is the new project from Jens Gad, co-producer and guitarist from ENIGMA, then continues with fantastic tracks from many top European artists such as Tya, Stella Maris and gems from underground US beatmasters such as The Moontrane Conductors and Hands Upon Black Earth plus world artists such as renowned Egyptian vocalist Nassar Kilada. The level of quality on this set is among the highest out there. I love putting this on for late night rendezvous!
ummm.....wallpaper music .......2006-03-04
not sure what this volume 4 is trying to achieve, but me thinks that if you take all 4 volumes and actually pick through the songs you might salvage one decent record...ughhhhh listen at your own risk!

Light the candles and the incense~.......2003-09-14
Then close your eyes and go beyond your wildest dreams and fantasies. This music will make love to you as none other. I anxiously await a new release, and have done so for two years.
This CD ( my fave ) and their first one, "Beneath the Veil" will transcend you.
A music lover and collector, for years, these are my two top picks, for exotic and sensual. Beyond Deepak,Enigma and Rasa and any others in this New Age field, which has been my musical life for several years.
Join the Dance.......2003-02-18
I absolutely loved Zigaia's first album, "Beneathe The Veil", so when I discovered their second album, I was thrilled to get it. The music is hypnotic, the vocals are sensual, the the beat makes you want to dance. It's perfect for bellydancers, but even if you don't own a coin belt, you can't help but move your hips to the drums. It's an amazing blend of seductive energy that truly celebrates the goddess in us all.
Check out their other album, too!
Trance While Ya' Dance!!!.......2001-08-01
Both of their albums are great. They are one of my favorite Witchy discoveries!
The music is secuctive and richly sensual. Lush is a good word to describe it!
Allow yourself to become a Dancer of Twilight!!!
Sensuous, Earthy, and Heavenly.......2001-07-17
With the common thread of love songs to the soul, this collection of global, world beat sounds acknowledges every level and every chakra in unabashed celebration. Sensuous, earthy, and heavenly, in a breathtaking mood of wonder and awe, these love-based pieces resonate deeply through body and mind, kissing the soul with un apologetic affection. I was surprised at the wide range of moods. Rich with bass tones and interwoven percussion alongside astounding vocals, this album will find a variety of uses, from wooing a potential mate to comfort in times of distress to energetic housecleaning. It conveys a feeling of knowing the listener to a depth that can be disconcerting, and is sure to be popular with both young and - well, those not quite so young.
Hypnotic and Seductive.......2001-02-26
Dancers of Twilight is definitely a "keeper" CD. Recently, I used several songs (#1 "Ondine" and #5 "Shape Shifter") as a soundtrack while shooting a stupendous storm of wildly dancing snowflakes and glittering ice crystals swirling on the wind currents blasting across the American River Canyon and transformed a winter wonderland home video into a magical moment on film. For this, among many other reasons, I love New Age music passionately because of the sense of creative freedom that it inspires within a person. Especially those moments when the "inner muse" that cannot be denied whispers "create your own reality" as the music lifts your spirit into a seemingly transcendant space where a song, a picture, a poem, a dance flows from one's heart, soul, body, imagination. Michael Breene is a terrifically gifted artist whose work is lush and inventive with his inspired use of percussive instruments and other FX that keep the listener engaged in his musical storyline. I particularly love the smooth synthesizer washes that he uses as a backdrop for the other dazzling effects in his aural palette. In addition to the two listed above, my favorite songs are "Magus" chanted by Jeff McBride, and the deeply moving "Dark Eros" which reaches within the shadow self and urges the physical passions to surrender to the moment.
To this listener, there is but one flaw in this album. It is the over use of singing mantras and seemingly endless whispery voice-overs that bury the magic of the instrumental layering and distract the ear from the subtle nuances as well as the depth of meaning within Breene's music. I would have loved to hear the title song "Dancers of Twilight" as an instrumental-only version. This is, for me, also true of their first release "Beneath the Veil" which is quite gorgeous and trancelike, but again way too much vocal involvement interferred with the majesty of the music itself. In my view, the "less is more" approach to vocal tracks would have enhanced their impact overall, especially when the message is manifestly religious/spiritual in context. At these times a Light touch is more palatable and easier to assimilate. Personally, I would adore listening to a totally instrumental CD by this artist and I hope that in the future he will produce one. One final note of appreciation is for the artist who designed the graphics of both their albums. Wonderful!

Sylvia Robinson..........2005-09-17
For all interested parties, "Sweet Stuff" and then "The Next time that I see you" are worth the purchase alone! I was lucky enough to find this disk at a local record store and purchased it at the domestic price of $11.99. I would suggest that you at least try to go that way before plunking down major money for it. For me, I play this music, I close my eyes and it's 1974..1975..1976. Music of my life, and I very much appreciate Sylvia, she gave me a picture of what love could be (evil smile and a wink!). I'll always appreciate her music! 5+ stars!!
Finally, The Super Bad Sexy Funk Soul of Sylvia ! ! !.......2001-02-14
Sweet and Funky Soul Fans... move over... Sylvia's back...
Finally a compilation of Sylvia's sweet 'n spicy soul hard hitters.
This is the type of stuff you expect to find on those pricey non-domestically available imports - - in fact, that's how I got back into Sylvia... hearing Private Performance, Next Time That I See You and If You Get The Notion on various Japanese '70s funk and soul compilations. On one, one of the tracks was actually lifted off an old beat up crackly 45, but it was soooooooooo good, them tingly li'l crackles didn't matter ! ! ! Now finally, Sylvia's freaky "Millie Jackson move over" funky love makin' tracks are back. - - What's so wild about her tracks is you REALLY feal like you're back in the '70s (remember those old K-Tel joints ?) - - some of the tracks have this low budget quality to them at the outset, but between Sylvia and the orchestrations they're bumping mad ! ! !
Check out the freaky fuzzy guitar solo on Next Time, or the funky bass solo in Sweet Stuff, and the way Sylvia comes back in with that sexy, "Now that ain't so bad after all !" (Word of advice guys incidentally... if you're listening to this stuff while riding the subway and prone to singing out loud, watch gittin into those ffffffff... ooomph Daddy, Aiii yaiii yaiii yaiii's out loud, or well... interesting folk might decide to accompany you !)

Mildly interesting..........2005-08-15
This disc turned out to be a Higher Octave Music sampler. It's
approx. 43min length is kind of skimpy to make a claim of being a
major source for keyboard reference. The juicey liner notes make
you think your listening to a gift for the senses; when in fact there is nothing that stands out here. The first track "Body Language" performed by Jonathan Cain is truly the only mememorable one. While there are 12 tracks listed but there are only
actually nine, as three are more like preludes to the other selections ranging 32sec. to just over a minute and a half. Still
the over all mood is mellow and ideal for late night listening or while reading. There surely is nothing that will break your
concentration! Listen to the samples above, get it only for a cheap price!

Midnight Star fans get ready to be disappointed.......2006-07-24
when I first saw this new CD I couldn't get to listening quick enough. If your looking for the Classic style of dance cuts, the melodic mid tempo movers, or the melting ballads that these guys produced over most of their LPs, even after the departure of calloway brother, then think again!
The only track to my mind that is worth any kind of praise, is the title track, but only on the (OLD SCHOOL MIX).
Like many, on seeing the name of a band that I grew up enjoying, I was so, so looking forward to at least a touch of that former glory, but no. I know things have moved on over the years, but surely the repetitive dull ballads here are not gonna help sell this CD. Sorry guys!!
Da Shizzzznitttt????.......2003-02-25
Like the review above this one, Midnight Star hasn't lost a step at all..., Belinda and the guys bring the heat. Uptempo cuts like "15th Avenue, I Like(When You Dance with Me?, and VIP", are off the chain.., And the ballads, "Movin'On, Hooked on You, and Just Because I Love You", are those red light, belly-rubbin', house party smokers...., This cd is complete, tracks 1 through 15, bottom line, vintage soul at it's best, no cameos from rappers to appeal to the teen audience.., like the intro track says..,"M.S. in the House", and only Midnight Star...., This is the best cd I have heard in the last 5 years..., finally a cd with substance, no weak tracks here..., Just put it in the deck and let it play..., so don't sleep on this....., believe me..., Midnight Star has another No Parking on the Dance Floor here, and we all remember how tight that album was...., Pick it up!!!
15th Ave........2002-12-17
This new CD is smooth, mellow and funky..A great stress reliever..Perfect for cruising down the highway. Its got these mellow funky grooves that mixes the old school with the new... I love all the songs but special favorites are "I Like", "VIP", "15th Ave." "Out Tonight" and a classic!! "Caught Up".
Belinda's got the lyrics, delivery, and arrangements thats Grammy potential. For a so called old school act, Midnight Star has broken the rules..and has not lost a step..This CD's a sleeper.

Album Description
Don who? Donald E. Ralke worked in the music system in Los Angeles in the 1950's with small labels as a procurer of musicians and arranger initially for small indie labels. He later became a house arranger for Warner Bros. where he produced recordings with the stars of "77 Sunset Strip" and this album features the very 'Best Of The Best" rhythm and percussion-meisters of the day. The recording's original release in 1960 itself had, at the time, a serious intent as well, as these were early days for stereophonic recordings and Warners' aim was to demonstrate their recording capabilities to a winder public. The sound on these recordings (now, for the first time in a brilliant digital transfer) is absolutely astonishing and is still a test for the most demanding audiophile and his sound system! The meaning of the musical genre - that of 'Exotica' has today lost much of its impact, but it has its roots in the fascination Americans had for all things at the end of the fifties African and, at the same time, Caribbean and South American. Mixing it all up into an acceptable fusion style, Ralke proved he was a worthy challenger in conveying the musical illusion of steamy forests and strange ritual as you will hear! Notes by Darrell Brogden of Kansas University's nationally syndicated radio programme 'The Retro Cocktail Hour' accompany the CD in a deluxe presentation. The track "Headhunter" is a great club favourite.Harkit.2006

Neither Savage or Sensuous.......2007-03-13
I must admit that the title caught my attention. Sad to say the music won't. It reminded me of being in a department store elevator stuck in the mezzanine and unable to get out. You can save yourself. If you want good exotica buy a Les Baxter CD.
