If you a) already have an extensive collection of doo wop on CD and b) favour bright, uptempo numbers rather than aching ballads and c) are't too picky about sound quality, then this compilation could be for you, but I certainly wouldn't start a collection here: Ace's Golden Age of American Rock'n'Roll Doo Wop Edition or Sony's 2CD Very Best of Doo Wop are safer bets; these sound as though they're dubbed from well-worn, crackly vinyl and the sound can be murky or trebly.

But if you have already taken a few steps down the road to streetcorner fanaticism, then these amateurish (ie even by doo wop standards) groups will have a strange appeal. There are a few warped ballads, like a great, wonky arrangement of Begin the Beguine and the touching yet ridiculous There'll be no Goodbye, but not nearly enough for my taste; the rockers seem more dated and corny. But hey, doo wop is a broad church and at least you can be fairly sure you won't come across many of these numbers on other compilations.

4 out of 5 stars Not The Usual Stuff On Oldies Radio.......2005-09-27

DOO WOP UNDERGROUND collects some of the obscure songs of a musical genre which has come to define the sound of late fifties-early sixties urban America.

Somewhat raw and unpolished, these tracks show how widespread was the enthusiasm for doo wop; not only as entertainment but also as expression for working class youth, white as well as black.

This was the original DIY music, before garage rock, punk or rap. Four to five teenagers, with the barest knowledge of harmony and the most basic (if any) backup band, could go into the studio and cut a single that was catchy to the ear. The song might tell a story or just be plain gibberish. But, once heard, that song could last within a listener's musical memory for a lifetime. That was the magic and beauty of doo wop.

Some of the better tracks on this 2 CD set include: The Shields' "Nature Boy," The Hi-Lutes' "Walking My Baby Back Home," the smooth "Lola" by the Chessmen, and the opening cut from the Metrotones, "Skitter Skatter." The chorus of which goes like this...

"Skitter skatter, witter, watter, baby all night long.
Whippy, whoppy,
Slippy, sloppy, baby all night long."

So Lieber-Stolleresque. It epitomises the spirit of this anthology.

You will find no well known hits or classic standards here. This is for the serious lover of doo wop music.
