Wonderful!!!.......2007-05-14

I bought this for my husband but fell in love with it myself. I had never heard of it but now consider Edvard Grieg my favorite composer. It is magnificent.

Relaxes your mind........2005-12-30

The peer gynt suite is very delicate and it relaxes me. Whenever I hear the first movement of Peer Gynt, I feel as if I am walking along the forest at dawn with sunshine passing through the tall trees. It calms me and I usually close my eyes to imagine Grieg's creative masterpiece. What also interests me the fourth movement. It starts with slow and quiet and then slowly the music accelerates with power. Like the title, "Mountain King," says itself, you can feel the grandness of the music toward the end.

The piano concerto in a minor is my favorite. This music seem to convey the full spectrum from quiet and delicate or gracious feel of music to more powerful and magnificent all proportionally adequately. It is very enjoyable. Whenever I listen to this music, I feel as if I am resting in the high mountainn looking at the full panorama. Anyway, that's just my imagination I feel from his music and of course, yours can be very different from mine.

As for the CD quality, I hear no distraction sound and it is recorded well, I think. The little cover booklet can be informative about Grieg. Also nice price from Amazon.

Relaxing music from a great composer.......2005-08-02

I absolutely loved the string music on Track 3. I remembered it from an old PC RPG called Quest for Glory IV. I was disappointed to find out that Track 4 was only a minute and a half long, because I grew up loving that song from the various places I heard it (Fantasia and a kid Detective PC game from the late 80's).
Overall, though, Grieg's greatest hits is a must-have for collectors of classical music. Grieg is revered as Norway's greatest composer of all time and he certainly has a knack for creating imagery of bustling fjords and majestic mountainsides with interlaced river ravines.

Better than just an introduction.......2004-04-28

This CD goes beyond just introducing Grieg. It is a truly beautiful and for me, invaluable collection of this excellent composer. Grieg had an inimitable gift for exploring emotion, often sadness and nostalgia. However, he also had a large touch of the virtuoso, as demonstrated by the famous Piano Concerto. True, the last 2 movements are not included here; however, the first is still stunning. The Peer Gynt Suites are wonderfully played, and Ase's Death and Heartwounds are especially noteworthy - the lush orchestral sounds of these gorgeous pieces unfold exquisitely. Homage March is a nice change of pace, upbeat and with a memorable theme, and Leonard Bernstein moves at a devilish pace in March of the Trolls. This CD will not disappoint you - buy it today!

For an intro to Greig, this is great. The "hall of the mountain king" is done very well.

More like Three and a Half Stars.......2006-02-05

When I think of the piano, the first composer that comes to my mind is Chopin. Chopin was a composer who excelled in small form writing for the piano. He wrote beautiful melodies with complex accompaniment that was both challenging for the performer and enlightening for the listener. Chopin did not write many multi-movement pieces and what he did write is generally not as good as his solo piano pieces anyway (this is my opinion, not a fact).
When buying recordings of Chopin's music, there are basically two options. You can either go with a "Greatest Hits" type collection, which works very well with Chopin, or you can buy collections that assemble all he wrote for a certain form (preludes, nocturnes, etudes, etc...). If you are new to Chopin, I suggest buying a "Greatest Hits" collection, though not necessarily this one, even though this is the CD in my car right now. The playing is okay but it's nothing really that special. Considering all the masterful Chopin interpreters out there, such as Rubinstein, Ashkenazy, Argerich, Pollini, and Perahia, it seems silly not to start with a pianist that you really love, since almost every great pianist has recorded works by Chopin. Having said that, this collection contains almost all my favorite works by Chopin, my only complaint being I wish it had more than one nocturne. Thus it serves as a good introduction to Chopin's music. I would recommend the Favorite Chopin collection by Ashkenazy over this collection because not only is he an amazing pianist and a masterful interpreter of Chopin, but it's two discs for the price of one.

Good, not Great.......2002-03-02

Revolutionary Etude and many other performers are good. However, Fanastie Impromptu I've heard performed much better. Raindrop Prelude is played okay, but the song is so low in volume that I can hardly hear it. Good deal though.

What can I say! This is a wonderful collection of music. I highly recommend it for anyone who loves his music.

Not a good version of Les Sylphides (#17); which is only a 5 minute excerpt. Any other Les Sylphides pieces are sprinkled throughout the CD as piano.

Selection of Songs?.......2006-07-02

Perlman is a man of extraordinary clarity and tonality also one of my favorite violinists. After I finish practicing a piece I usually find a recording to listen to different interpretations. Most of them are by Perlman and Heifetz. Unfortunately this album has some obscure songs and the songs itself do not do justice to Perlman what some other songs may have done. Still it is important to broaden the scope, so I would recommend this to all music connoisseurs :). btw i'm only 16 so...don't take this review too literal huh?

Perlam is already a great player like the whole world knows. But the music selection couldn't better! I espacily like the piano accomplimant. Perlman pays the pieces with true style. The working realtionship between Perlman and the Pianist is truly incredible. Before geting any of Perlman's other greatest hits albums, get this one!

This collection of familiar tunes will provide a relaxing hour with one of the world's premier violinists. However, the combination of "The Old Folks at Home" and "Motto perpetuo" is somewhat difficult to assimilate. At any rate, Perlman is a listener's joy!

Until the mother-daughter team the Judds came along in the early '80s, this late-'70s father-daughter tandem specializing in cheating songs probably raised more arched eyebrows than any duet in country history. But they sure sounded great, and they still do. Jeannie's crystalline soprano was all innocence on songs like "Heaven's Just a Sin Away," "Sweet Desire," "Teach Me to Cheat," and "Pittsburgh Stealers," and Royce's stirring harmonies were all worry, creating an incredible tension beneath the glossy surface. It just wasn't the same when, after three years out of the Top 10, they came back in 1984 with one last No. 1: the innocuous "Thank God for the Radio." They were the last commercial-country duet rooted wholly in traditional harmony styles, and that alone makes this one a long-overdue keeper. --John Morthland

This was a good compilation by one of country music's all-time great duos. "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" and "Thank God for the Radio" are my two favorite songs on it, though the rest of the album isn't bad. I recomment this to anyone who likes the Kendalls.

Traditional country at its finest.......2004-10-24

Lead singer Jeannie Kendall has a piercing voice that you either love or hate - I love it. Her father, Royce, provided harmony vocals - there were very few genuine duets and none of them are on this collection.

Heaven's just a sin away is the song they are best known for. It was a number one country hit and made a creditable showing on the American pop charts. It was their only pop hit but they had many more successes on the country charts. Of the other original songs here, Sweet desire, I'm already blue, You'd make an angel wanna cheat, Pittsburgh stealers. and Heart of the matter are my favorites. This collection also includes great covers of Put it off until tomorrow (Dolly Parton), Making believe (Kitty Wells) and Never my love (Association). All these tracks (indeed all the first thirteen here) were originally recorded for the Ovation label.

The album is completed by three tracks that they recorded for Mercury - Teach me to cheat, If you're waiting on me and Thank God for the radio.

With 20 greatest hits now apparently out of print and other compilations often containing re-recordings, this is (as I write this) the only compilation of original Kendalls music available. However it contains all the essentials (if not all their best work) so it's certainly worth buying if you enjoy Jeannie's unmistakeable voice.

Very important release.......2003-10-09

There are a lot of deceiving collection out there that mis represent the Kendalls. Most of them feature re-recorded versions of their biggest hits. At one time the originals were in the hands of a record company that went bankrupt, so almost every cheap record company out there had them remake their songs and then tried to make some money on a lie.

The songs here are the original recordings. And guess what, every one of their top ten hits are here. And this also includes three hits from their time on Mercury records.

The notes are very imformative. For the almost budget price, this is a steal!!!!

Excellent collection of father-daughter country duo.......1999-12-17

The Kendalls' father-daughter harmonies struck paydirt in 1977 with the breakout hit, "Heaven's Just a Sin Away." The gospel-laced country chart-topper even found moderate success as a pop-crossover. Two additional releases topped the charts, 1978's "Sweet Desire" and 1984's "Thank God for the Radio." All three featured Jeannie on lead vocals, singing in her fetching, high voice that blended magically with her father's baritone.

The generous 16 tracks of this collection, arranged in chronological order, are an excellent overview of their career. In addition to all three #1's, it includes nearly a dozen top-20's, including the cheatin' hearts of "Pittsburgh Stealers," moving ballads like "I'm Already Blue" and "Just Like Real People," and a cover of Dolly Parton's "Put it Off Until Tomorrow." The only real omission is their self-produced debut single, "Leaving on a Jet Plane," recorded a full seven years before their chart run. Still, what's here is quite sweet, with pristine remastered sound from the original Ovation and Mercury tapes.

The Kendalls continued to tour after the hits slowed down, leaving the road only when father Royce suffered a stroke and passed away in 1998. Like many, the Kendalls are reduced by the programming shorthand of oldies radio to a single hit. But their catalog goes a lot deeper, and this collection tells the story of their artistic and commercial successes, and helps fill out the 1970s history of country family harmony.

Had all the hit tunes I was looking for. Only a couple of ones I wasn't thrilled with but for the price I paid, well worth the money for the rest.
(and without "For the Love Of Ivy" which I personally think is one of their worst songs!)

Totally Evocative of our Youth........2006-02-18

'The Mamas & The Papas, 16 of Their Greatest Hits' does not have quite the cachet of their 1960s' 'Farewell to the Last Golden Era', but it succeeds in bringing back so many memories anyway.

For some reason, I vividly remember my first encounter with 'The Mamas and the Papas', as it was while I was watching a Dick Clark special televised from Atlantic City, and the group performed 'Monday, Monday'. I believe this was in my relatively unsophisticated pre-infatuation with the Beatles, so I was scornful of a group with such a contrived name and what seemed to be such a saccarine style. I am not quite sure exactly when my perception of 'The Mamas and the Papas' changed, except that it was probably just after they broke up and I started realizing what we lost.

The sense of loss was exasperated when Mama Cass went the way of Janis and Jim and Jimi.

This album has every performance I recall so well from my car radio of the time and every one evokes feelings as strong as the very best of the Beatles and far stronger than any American contemporaries.

As I sat at work on another "MONDAY, MONDAY," I started to "LOOK THROUGH MY WINDOW, thinking about how "I SAW HER AGAIN LAST NIGHT." I decided to compose a little poem "DEDICATED TO THE ONE I LOVE." It was easy to create "WORDS OF LOVE" as I told the pen to "GO WHERE YOU WANNA GO."

I sent it special delivery to "MY GIRL" who began to "TWIST AND SHOUT" with glee upon receipt of the testimony to our love. She hurried to my apartment without making a single "TRIP, STUMBLE, & FALL."
So elated were we that we decided to go "DANCING IN THE STREET."

Then I awoke from my slumbers, looked over at her to which she responded, "Did you "DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME"?

So, I didn't use all sixteen. Buy the CD and enjoy the songs and the memories.

The only Mamas & Papas album you will ever need to own.......2002-01-28

"The Mamas & The Papas: 16 of Their Greatest Hits" is one of those hits collections that pretty much includes all of the best of a particular group. Go ahead and listen to the four albums The Mamas & The Papas put out and dollars to donuts you will end up rather listening to this one. What is always interesting to me is to see what someone's favorite songs are on this album, because once you get past their biggest hits, "Monday, Monday" and "California Dreamin'," everybody seems to pick different songs; my two are "I Call Your Name" and "Twelve-Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming To The Canyon). All of these songs were produced between 1965 and 1968 by Lou Adler and they do indeed represent the very best of the group's unique four-part harmonies. I happen to be deaf in one ear and so when I listen to this album on a head set I switch around the headphones from time to time; this allows me to hear the break down of the harmonies, which is quite interesting. I wish I could explain it musically, but that sort of things is way beyond me, I am afraid. However, Cass Elliot is one of those singers you could listen to all night long, even without the rest of the group. More than the Beach Boys, CSN&Y or the Mike Curb Congregation, it is The Mamas & The Papas who represents the best of pop harmonies in the Sixties.

dont get me wrong!.......2001-07-18

This particular compilation is the reason that The Mamas and the Papas 2nd album has never been released on C.D! The Mamas and the Papas released 4 albums originally (not including "Live at Monterey Pop" or "people Like Us"). They were>(1) "If you can belive your eyes and ears"(2)"Cass,John,Dennie,Michelle-A.k.A self titled"(3)"Deliver"(4)"The Papas and The Mamas". Now, their 2nd album Cass,John,Etc. (self titled) was never released on cd because the picture on this compilation was originally the picture of their 2nd album except on the top border of the original their names appear in red letters and it doesn't say "20 greatest hits" on it. MCA made a bad call and decided to use the cover picture of the original second for a compilation probably never thinking that the original albums were ever going to be released on cd. the other 3 are on cd, have been for years, Live at monterey and people like us are also on cd.

NOT re-mastered originals .......2006-06-02

I bought this thinking that these WERE the ORIGINAL recordings of my favorite Brenda Lee's songs. After the first song, I realized that these were recorded when she was older, and not the spunky little numbers I was used to....she sings them well, but they show a little bit of aging in her voice, although she still does sing a great tune. I LOVE the songs, but her voice has some years in it. She's still Little Miss Dynamite!!

A good sample of her re-recorded hits.......2005-05-14

So far this is my favorite budget collection of the Owen Bradley re-recordings she did of her hits around 1996 (this is mentioned in her autobiography) Since she owns these recordings she can lisence them to any label and there seem to be a lot of collections floating around containing these newer recordings. I think the quality of these redone songs are great and I am happy to have these. Just long as the consumer is aware that they are not getting the original hits. This is a good cd if you want a casual overview of some of her biggest hits. Of course there is a lot missing, but this is a cheap way to start.
p.s the cd "Sings Her Greatest Hits" is also a good one, 20 songs over two discs (could have fit in one) but same price.

Susan Raye-an American Treasure.......2006-05-30

I have been an admirer and a fan of Susan Raye ever since I first saw her perform on the TV show, Hee Haw, back in the 1970's. It is a shame she never got the complete recognition she deserved for her musical style, beauty and grace. I have many of her albums, and I was hoping that at least SOME of them would make it to CD. Sadly, that has yet to happen. Until more of her priceless songs are released to CD, "Susan Raye-16 Greatest Hits" is well worth investing any amount of money to own and enjoy. Buy it; you will not regret it.

What A Pleasant Surprise-2........2005-08-29

Susan Raye, from Eugene Oregon, had 19 Billboard hits from 1970-1975. 13 of the 16 tracks on "Greatest Hits" made the charts. Favorites are always subjective but this reviewer liked "One Night Stand", "Cheating Game", "Stop the World (And Let Me Off"), and "When You Get Back From Nashville". That was one of the 3 tracks which failed to make the charts but each are of Billboard quality. The only selection this reviewer didn't like was a cover of Jackie DeShannon's "Put A Little Love in Your Heart", but SR presents fine versions of "My Heart Has A Mind Of Its' Own" and "Wheel of Fortune". Those were originally done by Connie Francis in '60 and Kay Starr in '52. SR's best-known hit, "L.A. International Airport" is here but overshadowed by other tracks. SR sings in a notably strong but very pleasant feminine voice, which stands out from the familiar, comfortable, Southern tones of Tammy, Loretta and Dotty. All 16 tracks here were produced by SRs mentor, Buck Owens and backed by his band, the Buckaroos. This guarantees a solidly professional setting. The informative inside jacket informs us that Susan married one of Owen's drummers, walked away from the business, got her degree at Cal State Bakersfield, and got a straight job! That makes SR multitalented. More power to her.
This listener completed a recent review of Billy Jo Spear's "Country Legends" by labeling it a "pleasant surprise" and urging amazoners to take a chance by considering some lesser -known country ladies. That advice holds true here: Give SR a try! There is another pleasant surprise awaiting.

Susan Raye was definately one of the biggest female country stars in the early 70's, almost everything she released went top 10 or top 20 and her big Capitol hits from the period are all here. Her albums did fantastic on the charts as well, Susan had more top 10 BILLBOARD albums than later CMA Female Vocalists of the Years Janie Fricke, Pam Tillis, and K. T. Oslin but her big years were the really big years for Tammy and Loretta, Dolly, Lynn Anderson, and Donna Fargo so she got shut out in the awards unfortunately. She certainly sings as good as any of these ladies and much of her song material is superb: LA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, CHEATING GAME, STOP THE WORLD, PITTY PITTY PATTER, LOVE SURE FEELS GOOD IN MY HEART etc. these are wonderful songs I will never forget nor will many country fans from the era. I have only one thing to add : MORE SUSAN RAYE REISSUES PLEASE!! It's a crime she has only one full-length CD out on the market and has had only one other one issued. There are a lot of people who remember and still love the beautiful and talented Susan Raye despite her being essentially retired from the business for 25 years and completely retired for over 15 years.

Susan Raye is a par singer excellance!!! Her unique and beautiful voice enhanced any song she sang and I own several of her Vinyl Lps and of course, this compilation of all her greatest hits! Any song she sang could have been a hit because her voice is so pure and unaffected. She also doesn't sound like anyone else! Her voice is gorgeous!!! She is also gorgeous as well, unlike performers today like Reba, Faith, Martina and Shania who have the looks but don't have even half the talent in their little pinky that Susan has in hers. Why she never made it bigger than she did is a one of the HUGE mysteries of Country Music. But what she did is absolutely beautiful. I just wish they would release her individual Lps on CDs. Nevertheless, this CD compilation is fantastic and includes all of her major hits as well as some minor ones. They are all outstanding!! My favorites are of course: LA International Airport (her biggest hit), Whatcha Gonna Do With a Dog Like That (A hilarious catchy ditty with a great hook), Pitty, Pitty Patter, The Cheating Game and Wheel of Fortune. It is very difficult to pick out a favorite of this bunch. Meanwhile, its time for Susan to make a comeback!!

Good Sample of one of the First "Heavy Metal" Bands.......2007-03-11

Arguably, in fact, Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" (topped out at #2 on the charts, under some Rascals song i can just barely remember) brought the term "heavy metal" into use.

While today Steppenwolf is mostly remembered for the crunching guitar-powered raver "Born to be Wild", there was a lot more to them than that.

This collection is a good place to start if you're not familiar with the band.

I've listened to this sixteen track collection of key Steppenwolf cuts many,many times.My two Steppenwolf favorites are on here,being "It's Never Too Late" and the deep album cut "Ride With Me".As for the great tunes of theirs,MOST are on this domestic release,like "Born To Be Wild",the jammin' "Rock Me"(get out the revolving psychedelic lights),"Hey Lawdy Mama","Magic Carpet Ride",the controversial "The Pusher","Monster" and "Sookie Sookie".Sure,you could get a lot more material by purchasing a copy of their 'actual' lp reissues on CD,but THIS way,one takes a short cut.A must-have.

I really liked this album. Steppenwolf were the first band I really liked when I was growing up. I listened to all their albums, and liked each one. BUY this album. You won't be dissapointed!

Killer 60s semi-psycidelic rock n' roll!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-01-31

This album is the absolute best! My dad bought it when I was in first grade, and enjoyed listening to Born to Be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride, and never gave a second thought to the rest of the album. Now six years later, I found it lying in my garage, listened to the other tracks, and fell in love with it. If you are a hippy-surfer/skateboarder you will find this album to be a real treat. That's all.

Great Compilation of Classical Music.......2007-08-05

the is a beautiful album with some of the best music ever written on it
it's also a really nice cd to listen to

mozart,beethove,chopin,bach are just a few of the composers who's music is featured on here,i would highly recommend this for anyone who likes classical as it has a wide range of styles and it is a greatest hits of sorts in that alot of the songs will be familiar to anyone who has either studied the piano or just likes this type of music

I love this album. Besides the familiar theme song, there are many pieces which we all learn to play as children studying piano. It's great to hear them. A great gift for young people studying piano.

Best cd of its kind. Beautiful piano music........2006-02-25

I did not know what to expect when I ordered this cd. I ordered it primarily for the Lucy & Linus song but was pleasantly surprised with all the other selections of piano music. It is a cd of piano music that one would believe Schroeder would play. Classics from of course Beethovan and many other familiar favorites. I listen to this cd in the car and it is one of my favorite cd's.

Wonderful music to live by. I play this in my car instead of listening to annoying radio chatter. It is a great collection that ends with the Charlie Brown theme that brings back great childhood memories

I had this cassette when I was a little girl...mom garage saled it accidentally and I had been missing it for a long time. Amazon was the only place I was able to find a copy of the CD and I was SOOO happy to see it in my mailbox. Just plain old piano classics...if you enjoy solo piano, this is a great one. Love it!
