Not to be mistaken with Bill Withers's Greatest Hits or even the 1994 best-of with which it shares its name, Lean on Me nevertheless shares much with those two earlier retrospectives--notably the likes of such '70s soul-pop gems as the title track, "Ain't No Sunshine," "Lovely Day," and "Use Me." Like the earlier Lean on Me, this remastered selection includes 18 tracks, 13 of which overlap with the '94 set. Withers's oeuvre is something less than expansive: he recorded 10 albums for Sussex and Columbia between 1971 and 1985, then gracefully exited the business with three top 10 hits to his credit. The singer's warm vocals and wise lyrics have held up splendidly through the years, making him a likely candidate for periodic rediscovery. This anthology stands as the title of choice for the next wave of soul fans Withers wins over. --Steven Stolder

Best-kept secret in popular music.......2007-07-09
Bill Withers must be the best-kept secret in popular music in the last 50 years. You've heard virtually every song on this album -- many are absolute classics -- even if you've never heard of Bill Withers. This is a must-have addition to your music collection. Uplifting, moving rhythms with harmonious lyrics. From blues to jazz to R&B to mellow ballads -- great music, beautifully delivered.
Decent pick.......2007-03-15
I got the CD for one song, but there are several nice songs on the CD.

Review of Lean on Me-Best of Bill Withers.......2007-01-04
Wanted the classic track "Ain't no sunshine" and hoped naively for more of the same on this album but got only dated soul as honestly expected. 5 Stars are deserved just for that one track.

Great Stuff.......2007-07-22
The sound quality of this disc is surprisingly good, very good for an ADD. All the selections captured each singer in his/her top form. It is a real treat that this disc contains many work that were not normally in certain singer's repertoire. Gedda's Aida, Moffo's Rossini-Rosina and Cherobino, for example, all were superbly sung. Even Moffo's Lucia sounds much better than I have ever heard in other places.
A Great Introduction to Italian Opera.......2005-05-01
The artists on this CD succeed in their goal to create a CD that displays great Italian opera. Carlo del Monte and Victoria de los Angeles open the disc with the Brindisi from La Traviata. Victoria de los Angeles is not the best Violetta, but she does the job, along with her parner Carlo del Monte, an underappreciated tenor. Victoria de los Angeles also appears on the CD in "Un bel di vedremo" from Madama Butterfly, a role she was well known for. Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda appears on the disc twice. His first appearence is a superb rendition of "La donna e mobile" from Rigoletto. His final performance on this disc is in the heroric aria "Celeste Aida", a performance in a role that was not in his voice range. Anna Moffo is the star on this CD, appearing three times in three very different roles. First is her beautiful "Una voce poco fa", normally a role that calls for a mezzo-soprano. Her second is "Voi che sapete" from Le Nozze di Figaro, another mezzo-soprano role. Her final appearence is her best, "The Mad Scene" from Lucia di Lammermoor. Underrated tenor Giuseppe Campora performs "Che gelida manina" with a great tenor voice. Soprano Reri Girst is excellent in her performance of "Caro nome" from Rigoletto. One of my favorite baritones appears on this CD. Robert Merrill is a perfect Count di Luna, and it is evident in his rendition of "Il balen del suo sorriso". Another baritone appears on this CD: mario Sereni. He is not a world famous baritone, but he should have been. Overall, this is an excellent introduction to the world of Italian opera.
Best of the best!.......2003-01-11
The performers, the selections, the quality... almost divine!
Fabulous bargain for anyone.......2002-11-24
I would recommend this CD to anyone, from opera novice to experienced listener...
These are older recordings -- I would guess mostly from the 1960's. The recording quality is exceptional for the day and, while not the equivalent of modern engineering, is sufficient to allow sheer physical pleasure from the music and an immediate appreciation of the vocal qualities of the artists. The sound quality is the only mild drawback...
The performances are magnificent! The voices are almost entirely lighter and more agile than the great voices of the 80's and 90's. In fact, the ear of the editor is apparent in his preference for lighter and more agile voices.
For example, there is a beautiful rendition of "Che Gelida Manina" from someone I had never heard before, Guiseppe Campora. He does not have the weight or volume of Pavarotti or Domingo, but has more elegance and a pure, charming tone. A connoisseur performance, but nevertheless a true operatic rendition by a tenor who can hit the high C with authority -- as good for a newcomer to opera who wants to hear the real thing, as for an opera lover who would like to hear something a bit different.
Some of the artists were among the most famous singers of their day: Moffo, de los Angeles, Gedda.
Anna Moffo, one of the greatest sopranos of her day (and all time), is in magnificent voice in famous blockbusters from Rossini's Barber of Seville, Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, and the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor.
De Los Angeles is at her best in "Libiamo" from La Traviata, but the recording quality (the one inadequately engineered track on the CD) and her lack of oomph make for a second-rate version of "Un bel di".
In keeping with the light and lyrical orientation of the selections, Moffo -- a famous Gilda and hardly a dramatic voice -- is bypassed for the even lighter, sweeter and more agile colatura Reri Grist (while she still had her voice), in a lovely "Caro Nome".
Another nice selection is Mario Sereni performing "Di provenza, il mar". Both this and "Libiamo" are taken from one of my favorite recordings of Traviata -- also a great chance to hear Serafin at the helm of the Rome Opera House orchestra. (The 2-CD version of this is still available from EMI, I think.) Newcomers will love this pretty tune, and Sereni's archtypal Verdi baritone is good, although hardly the best ever.
Franco Corelli has never been a favorite of mine, but he sounds the best I've ever heard him in his rendition of "Cielo et mar".
Anyway, I didn't intend to list every cut. Whether you are an opera lover who would like to hear some of opera's most famous arias performed in a new light, or an opera lover who would like to hear great performances at a cut-rate price, this CD gets my unqualified approval.
Great songs for a low price........2001-08-16
Ranging from selections of La Traviata, Il Trovatore and other popular Italian operas, this is a great cd for under four bucks. The singers may not be well recognized, but they do possess powerful voices.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07
Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.
Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18
I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.
Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21
I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!
Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11
This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....
The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!
The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!
The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother
The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt
The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!
This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."
I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.
There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.
The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.
In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.
One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07
What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!
Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16
Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

THE TROLLEY SONG - Judy Garland & MGM Studio Chorus (1944)
WUNDERBAR - Kathryn Grayson & Howard Keel (two of MGM's favorite singing duos) (1953)
It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.
This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

Customer Reviews:
TAKES ME BACK FANTASTIC .......2007-05-13
I REALLY ENJOY THIS CD. IT TAKES ME RIGHT BACK TO WHEN THESE SONGS CAME OUT.ORLEANS IS SUCH A REFRESHING SOUND.
Solid Seventies Sounds!.......2007-01-19
I always liked the hits Orleans had back in the seventies, especially "Still The One" and "Dance With Me" of course. I really wasn't familiar with their other music except for hearing a couple of their albums that friends of mine had. But after sampling other tracks online, I decided this was the best collection of Orleans music for me. I think there are more comprehensive collections available, but for the casual fan who recalls the hits and not much else, this is a very good place to start getting to know their music. The hits are here, and the other tracks are all good at least, some being very good and on a par with their best-known songs.
The sound quality is nothing special, but not bad either. Some tracks sound better than others but it is all very listenable, not getting in the way of the music.
Like one of their better songs says: "Let There Be Music"!
Pleasant.......2006-11-30
At this late point in my life I'm darned if I'm going to wax TOO nostalgic for Orleans; they were part of a vanguard of "soft" rock that helped bury rock radio in an avalanche of pablum (along with, among others, Pablo Cruise, The Outlaws and everything Stevie Nicks did for Fleetwood Mac). But, yeah, I like some of their stuff, and "Dance With Me" always makes a tiny smile come to my face. Plus, as others have said, I'm delighted John Hall got elected and look forward to his being one of the folks to turn the Congress around.
John Hall rocks!.......2006-11-11
I learned about Orleans on the Colbert Report's "better know a challenger" when Stephen Colbert interviewed John Hall, who was just elected to congress! I am suprised that I actually recognize some of these songs, but I just ordered this CD and am looking forward to hearing more of John Hall's music.
I actually watched John Halls' victory party live on a local news program, and he broke into song during his victory speech- he has an incredible voice! Then, after the election, he returned to the Colbert Report and performed the national anthem with Stephen Colbert. truly impressive! I expect his congressional career will be equally impressive!
Congressman John Hall.......2006-11-10
For those who don't know, John Hall, one of the founders of Orleans, has just been elected to the U.S.Congress. Congratulations!! As Stevie Ray Vaughan would say, "the House is rocking."

If Bryan Adams's no-frills, blue-collar image evokes a Canadian take on Springsteen, his voice--and especially his pop sensibility--recalls Rod Stewart during his post-Faces Top 40 years. There's a deceptively effortless sincerity that masks the sometimes mundane themes of the infectious hits (the cheap nostalgia of "Summer of '69" and the various romantic concerns of "Run to You," "The Best of Me," and "Please Forgive Me") gathered on this updated hits collection. (Just five of the tracks appear on his previous So Far, So Good anthology.) It's hardly surprising to learn that Adams began his career as a tunesmith covered by everyone from BTO and Loverboy to Kiss and Bonnie Tyler. That eclecticism bubbles up throughout this modern compilation, from the flamenco flavors of Don Juan De Marco's "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" to the MTV Unplugged classical-strings-backed rendition of "I'm Ready" and the surprisingly effective electronica of "Cloud Number Nine." This collection chronicles Adams's rise from '80s AOR (album-oriented-rock) contender to '90s MOR (middle-of-the-road) superstar, thanks to his Grammy- and Oscar-winning hit "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" from Robin Hood and harmonizing with Sting and Stewart on Three Musketeers' "All for Love." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Best of Me - Bryan Adams.......2007-06-01
I had been looking for 4 specific songs and they are on this CD. The rest of the CD is also great....
LOVE IT!.......2007-03-19
Well, I'll admit that I'm not the BIGGEST Bryan Adams fan. I bought this cd solely for the "have you ever really loved a woman" song... but found that I like just about every song on this cd! Its great for cleaning the house, or every once in awhile my fiance turns it on to slow dance in the kitchen... I highly recommend this cd!
Great CD But The Best It's Not.......2007-02-12
How is it possible to give Bryan Adams' previous greatest hits package a 5 star perfect review and the follow up a 3 star average review ? Simple, the rocking guy next door who belted out 'Cuts Like A Knife' and 'It's Only Love' is nowhere to be found on this one (except on 'Summer Of '69')
instead,I'm reminded of Michael Bolton and that is not a good thing
Don't get me wrong,Bryan is still an expert at great songwriting but when you put this many ballads on a single CD you're just asking the listener to fall asleep. Not quite sure what the reasoning was here. All the songs on their own are fantastic but packaged together side by side it's just too much of one style.
'The Best Of Me' - ballad
'Can't Stop This Thing We Started' - extremely overplayed but good song
'I'm Ready' - painfully slow ballad
'Summer Of '69' - absolute perfection in songwriting, his best song ever!
'Let's Make A Night To Remember' - ballad but my favorite song on this CD
'All For Love' - (ballad)I would have bet this was Michael Bolton with friends
'Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman - yet another ballad, nice one though
'Run To You' - great rocking song,I love this one
'Cloud Number Nine' - pretty good song
'Everything I do ' - ummm another ballad
'Back To You - a pretty good song
'When You're Gone '- A nice duet with ex spice girl mel c
'Please Forgive Me' and yet another ballad
'The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You - Great rocking tune
'Inside Out' - are you kidding me,end with yet one more ballad
I would recommend buying this if you are a fan or simply enjoy most of these songs and want to listen to them one at a time....but seriously run out and buy 'So Far So Good' that is MUCH MUCH Better...Bryan Adams is great and has a romantic soft side but also has a rocking side that you would just never know from this release
The Upside - packed full of great, well thought out songs, great production and great singing and performances, plus includes some gems that were not included on the previous greatest hits package
The Downside - (snooring) It literally puts me to sleep, never listen to this while driving a vehicle, far too many slow songs on one CD
The Bottom Line - As a huge Bryan Adams fan I had to buy this because I love every song,I just wish he would have either released a double album with more upbeat songs or left off some of these ballads...you should check this out because the songs really are good but definitely buy 'So Far So Good' from Bryan Adams first to really get a taste of what this songwriting genius is capable of....or if you have insomnia and need some helping getting to sleep this is a perfect prescription...donutman says so!!!
Best of Me by Bryan Adams.......2007-01-09
I enjoy this CD as it has my favorites that he has done.
Love This Cd.......2007-01-03
This Cd has all the songs i have been wanting to listen specially Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman it's a great song it reminds me of love every time i listen to it, I just enjoy listening to it alot, The rest of the songs are just great, I also own So Far So Good another great cd, i think Bryan Adams is the best artist i have ever had in my cd collection, Just buy this cd.

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin
Customer Reviews:
Irish at it's best........2007-05-07
This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.
Irish Magic.......2006-08-21
This is my first CD of the Irish Tenors. And what a joy! I played it as soon as it arrived. I like the blend of their voices, the passion and enthusiasm they bring to this CD. What I find is a real treat is the words to all the songs are in the booklet.I love this CD.
Just got your Kleenex.......2005-12-25
I suggest a box of Kleenex for each person in the room when you play this CD or VHS recording. Mom won't let me play it anymore because she...well, you know what I mean.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-12
When it's cold and frightful here, I play The BOYZ!
So wonderful. So much fun.
Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.
Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!
The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22
This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!
Well worth buying.

Latter-day also-rans.......2007-05-28
There will always be arguments for this or that singer, but this title is absurd. I didn't see a single Jussi Bjoerling, George London, Leonard Warren, or Zinka Milanov, and only one mention of Del Monaco. These were singers. Bjoerling and London were in a class by themselves. I saw all of these folks live on stage. London and Del Monaco had stage presence you don't get now. Di Stefano, Kirsten, de los Angeles should be on any best list. Play any tenor aria by any tenor; then play Bjoerling's. Play any bass/baritone aria by any singer; then play London's. Jussi and George will knock your socks off. They sang everything in every language. Tebaldi and Pavarotti sang only Italian, much easier.
A well-sung compilation.......2003-09-15
Compilations usually receive negative feedback from experienced opera listeners. However, this compilation by no means should be only welcomed by opera listeners, it should be welcomed by all music listeners. This CD is a great one to own for a first time opera listener. Also, for the person who wants to listen to opera once in a while and who does not want to buy a myriad of CD's in order to have the same amount of arias as this CD has. Eighty-percent of the singers are high-quality singers in this CD and the orchestras along with their respective conductors, do justice to the songs. All of the arias in this CD are what we in the field call, standard repertoire, and therefore are a good source for a beginning musician to help him or her listen to phrasing, colour, dynamics, language etc. I certainly recommend it, without a doubt.
This cant be the best.......2003-04-20
Elisa from Italy is absolutely right--well, the present generation may not be able to listen the golden oldies and the grand masters in person but it is still true that the past masters far surpassed the new. De Stefano had a magnetic voice, but listen to Gigli singing Puccini's La boheme and you will melt away, though it is v v v difficult to get hold of his mono recordings, even in CD. I disagree with Elisa only on one point: Tebaldi is good, but Victoria de Los angeles' Mimi is better. And the indulgent Thomas Beecham is my favourite conductor of this opera, way ahead of Toscannini, but De Stefano's Boheme is worth keeping and listening to again and again....
TRUE OPERA LOVERS CANNOT POSSIBLY LIKE THIS!.......2002-11-27
True opera lovers (I won't say "experts" 'cos I dislike the word) cannot possibly like this ... ! Apart from Callas, here there is none of the greatest artists! Callas may be great in Carmen but nobody can beat RENATA TEBALDI and her angel-like voice in all of Puccini's operas or in GIORDANO's Andrea Chénier. No Carreras can beat MARIO DEL MONACO in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, or Verdi's Otello. And finally, NO ALAGNA, or PAVAROTTI, or LICITRA, or whatever CHEAP TENOR or CROOK can ever beat the greatest tenor of all times: GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Come on! You can't like crook Pavarotti once you have heard Giuseppe Di Stefano!! You can't like ... connductor Riccardo Muti if you have listened to Arturo Toscanini!!
True opera lovers, especially lovers of Puccini, go for the Immortal, the Sublime, the Beautiful in opera: GO FOR GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Go hear his performance of "E lucevan le stelle" as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "Tosca" or "Che Gelida manina" always as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "La Boéme" and you'll know what I mean.
Even if you Hate Complilations, Get This One.......2002-06-21
This is a marvelous collection of better known arias and duets in Opera. The singers are those famous for setting, and raising, the bar in their field and for their times: Renata Scotto, Maria Callas, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti. If you are only somewhat familiar with opera, these recordings give you the highest feeling of what an aria or duet can sound like when sung and interpreted at its best. If you are already familiar with these songs, then you will appreciate this collection all the more for having gathered them in one place. I play both discs all the time. I've especially appreciated being able to compare vocal qualities side by side, so to speak, as Maria Callas can be heard next to Mirella Freni and Victoria de los Angeles. Even if you are not familiar with these singers, this is the way to meet them. Maria Callas has a much darker, back of the throat tone. Mirella Freni is pure, clear and light floating up in the higher notes. You can almost visualize the singers as they place the notes in their throats and set them out in the air to vibrate.

Album Description
If you've never heard of Todd Snider, then That Was Me: Todd Snider 1994-1998 is an introduction. If you're already a fan, then his first compilation, following seven critically acclaimed albums, is a tribute to the wry, honest, brutal and yet funny Snider. Featuring 17 tracks culled from his first three albums plus a previously unreleased cover of Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville"--all digitally remastered from the original master tapes--That Was Me was created with Snider's full participation and includes his own liner notes and detailed songography.
An iconoclastic hero of alt-country, Americana, college radio and modern folk, Snider's influences are the likes of Randy Newman, Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Born in Portland, OR, he moved to Santa Rosa, CA, after high school and learned to play the harmonica. His brother, living in Austin, TX, figured Todd might find a job in a band there so he sent him a plane ticket. After seeing Jerry Jeff play in a local bar, Snider indeed decided that was what he wanted to do with his life.
During a mid-'80s stint in Memphis where he established a residency at the Daily Planet club, he was discovered by Keith Sykes, a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band. John Prine then hired Snider as an assistant and eventually had him open shows. When Buffett heard Snider's demos, he signed him to his MCA imprint Margaritaville Records. His debut album, 1994's Songs for the Daily Planet, starred "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues" as well as "Alright Guy," "Trouble," "You Think You Know Somebody," "Easy Money" and "That Was Me."
For 1996's Step Right Up, Snider and his band, the Nervous Wrecks, continued blending bluegrass, blues, folk-rock and country-rock to forge their own distinctive sound. That Was Me reprises its "Enough," "Hey Hey," "Moon Dawg's Tavern," "Horseshoe Lake," "Tension," "Better Than Ever Blues (Part Two)," "Late Last Night" and "Side Show Blues." 1998's Viva Satellite contributes "Can't Complain," "Guaranteed" and "Doublewide Blues." Snider has since issued four albums on Prine's indie Oh Boy Records, including 2004's East Nashville Skyline, and he continues to tour across the country.
Customer Reviews:
He's an Allright Guy.......2007-02-02
This is a nice collection of songs and styles. I really like all of it. It is my first Todd Snider album but it won't be my last!
Todd Snider - That Was Me.......2006-08-24
Todd Snider is a great folky singer/songwriter hippie who sounds like he'd have been perfect for the 1960's. He's definitely unique in today's music scene. He writes really good songs and this CD gives a nice brief overview of some of his best songs over the 5 years. And at a great price too!
For the most part, these are good roots-y Americana folk/country songs for the modern times. He's hilarious as far as writers go. If he were an author, he'd be one of those quirky guys who have a cult following. I enjoyed most of the songs on here a lot. There were only one or two which I didn't care for - and that's pretty good at 18 songs.
If you like cool, unique, weird, talented singer/songwriters, Todd Snider's the guy for you. This is a good introduction to some of his earlier stuff. I would definitely recommend picking up his more recent stuff too.
Just a clarification..........2006-04-06
Another reviewer complained that this wasn't really "the best of" Todd Snider's work, since it doesn't include songs such as "Vinyl Records" and "Statistician's Blues," et al. I agree that those are great songs, but they were released on John Prine's independently owned Oh Boy! label, not on the MCA-Universal mega-conglomerate, which is the company that put out this particular collection. Yeah, it would be great to have all of Snider's "best" work on one collection, but I for one am rather glad that Universal doesn't own Oh Boy! so that that is not possible... But if you want to check out Snider's early work, from the albums he put out in the mid-to-late 1990s, this is a fine single-CD option.
NOT the very best of collection.......2005-11-17
If you are like me, any artist that you really really love, chances are you have every cd/album that this artist ever realeased. And say 10 years or so down the road, this artist comes out with a "Best of" or "greatest hits" cd. You are curious to see what selections were put on it, and except for the one or two cover songs, or maybe a NEW song,(they do that in the hopes of that big fan will buy it for that one or two songs he/she may not have)you say to yourself "THAT IS NOT THE BEST OF" ! Well, when I saw Todd's selections on his "BEST OF CD", I was disapointed. Just to name a few songs that were left off are as follows: "I believe"-"broke"-"vinyl records"-"beer run"-"alot more"-"new connection"-"statistician's blues"- and one that I found online was a song he did called "Plastic girl". If you can find that one or any of the above mentioned songs you will see what I mean. If you like todd's music, don't skimp on this guy. Get all his cd's, you won't ever regret it. Thanks for listening.
Good Summary Of Old Stuff But Should Have More New Stuff For Long Time Fans.......2005-10-19
I significantly agree with the previous review. If you've bought Todd Snider's later CDs, this would be a good introduction to his earlier material (especially since it contains cuts from his "Viva Satellite" CD which is hard to find). Of course, I would suggest that you get his "Songs From the Daily Planet" CD as that is a classic. This CD contains songs from his first three CDs plus a previously unreleased cover version of Jimmy Buffett's "Margartaville" (sung significantly different than how the Parrothead does it).
I'm only disappointed because the above cover version is the only new thing for the fans who have all of his CDs. I'm sure there had to be some more unreleased material out there that could have been added as Todd is known for his cover versions in his live shows. Even if it meant removing a studio track or two, I think you could have a perfect mix of introducing newbies while satisfying the "oldbies".
Another nit is that the liner notes are extremely hard to read that I actually scanned a few of the pages to blow them up to read (no joke). But all-in-all, it is a decent purchase to make.
