Non-Stop Funk, Vol. 2

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
John Luongo put together this selection of mid-'70s and early-'80s funk as a real-time mix, meaning that intros and outros tend to get snipped out in the interest of keeping the beat going. He includes a couple of well-known and much-sampled grooves--"Machine Gun," "Funky President"--but leavens them with nifty little-heard tracks (when was the last time you checked out the Brothers Johnson's "Get the Funk Out Ma Face"?). The disc is generally a lot more effective when he's drawing on the clipped, tense snap of '73 and '74 than when the rhythms drift into disco bombast, though closing with the creepy, suffocating bounce of the Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" is an inspired idea. --Douglas Wolk
