Singer Anastacia is definitely prone to no-frills caveats: "I'm a freak of nature," she declares on her sophomore album's opening title track, "You better beware of danger." And so begins the journey into this Taylor Dayne doppelgänger's musical world, a place populated with overblown rock-funk-R&B tracks signed, sealed, and delivered with the sole intent of freakifying the Chicago-based songstress stateside (she's sold over 7 million albums worldwide). Replete with melismatic wails (on power ballads like "I Dreamed You" and "You'll Never Be Alone"), hard-edged, don't-mess-with-me manifestos ("Paid My Dues," "Why'd You Lie to Me"), and a requisite superstar cameo (Faith Evans sits in on "I Thought I Told You That"), Anastacia works the funky-white-girl thing with all she's got. And though most of her material is fairly schlocky, this onetime contestant from MTV's The Cut has a thick creamy purr of voice that carries the run-of-the-mill material and prevents the entire affair from invoking a caveat emptor. --Sylvia W. Chan

01. Freak Of Nature-9.8/10, The title track is really just a good dance song. The lyrics are great. Anastacia just really lets loose with her voice. Its about how she isn't gonna be what everybody wants. She's gonna be herself no "Ooh La La Baby" I'm surprised this wasnt single. Its certainly good enough to be.

02. Paid My Dues-10/10, A song they shows that Anastacia just doesn't care. You can't stop Anastacia. A nice beat. The first single off of the album. Talks about how shes paid her dues and can't be held down. Great choice for a single. But i wouldn't have released it first.

03. Overdue Goodbye-9/10, A slower track. She is saying good bye to someone. She tells him if love was a season he would be her winter. So shes telling him "Goodbye" Its her overdue goodbye.

4 out of 5 stars Freak of Nature "outtakes" released independently.......2004-01-06

Although you may think that Outcasts is Freak of Nature's third album, it is important to note that vocalist Mike Tramp released this compilation CD after his debut solo CD. Outcasts, which would be wise to title "Outtakes", came out when Mike Tramp made an effort to have it released Stateside after his first two FON albums never seeing the light of day. Too bad cause those two albums (s/t and Gathering of Freaks) were the highpoints of his career. Unfortunately they did not get the support they deserved and FON broke up in 1996. Mike released his solo album Capricorn and then this Outcasts CD in 1998. But because the songs on it weren't composed as an album, there is no real sense of unity between them. It was still cool to read Mike's liner notes about the history of FON, which he called "the best band of his life", and the intrepretations of his songs.

Some of the songs on this CD are the rough demo versions recorded with original guitarist Oliver Steffensen, who would later co-write some songs with Mike on his first and third solo albums. Three of these songs would also make it to the debut FON album because they were too strong leave out Mike himself would admit years later. "Possessed" is perhaps one of the heaviest songs Mike ever wrote, especially lyrically. "Are You Ready" features different vocals from Mike compared to the bonus track on the s/t with guitarists Kenny Korade and Dennis Chick (ex-House of Lords). It is cool to have different versions of these tracks as they are among the most metal and powerful songs in Mike Tramp's career.

"Blame it on the Fool" kicks off the CD, which was one of the songs that didn't make it on the first CD. Lyrically it's quite self-explanatory but musically it might have needed some more work. "Where You Belong" and "Wartime" are both heavy songs where Mike Tramp explores with new lyrical ideas. Mike definitely wrote his best and most cerebral lyrics in his short-lived band FON. The second album Gathering of Freaks, in my opinion, features his best vocal performance plus most thought provoking lyric work to date, and is still by far my favourite Mike Tramp related album along with White Lion's Pride. "Dead and Gone" is one of the better songs on the album and I think it's a shame it didn't make it on the studio albums. It would have been a great fit. The unplugged versions of "What Am I" and especially "Turn the Other Way", while good in their own right, make you want to hear the studio versions on the debut CD. I think "Turn the Other Way" is an excellent song and a great album opener. Very fast and energetic compared to everything else Tramp has written before and after FON.

The two semi-ballads "I Regret" and "Can't Find My Way" are both killer works. I can't believe they were left out and I am thankful to Mike for making the effort to get them released in one form or another. Because they're too good to be left gathering dust in some vault. Tramp wrote "I Regret" about his (then) new-born son and explains he understood his dad's feelings with a son of his own. Also it's a pity FON never did this song live. Tramp would finally cover it years later as a solo artist. "Can't Find My Way" is, as Tramp puts it, "the song he enjoyed singing the most" but again it's a shame it didn't make it on the albums. This song is a true METAL song from structure to attitude to the lyrics to the music to the vocals. It is also one of the best, most emotional, and most devastasting songs of Mike ever. Lyrically it destroys me. The part where he goes "I've tried before to unlock the door..." gives me chills every time! The song slowly builds up and gains tempo and heaviness as it reaches a height where you might want to freeze forever. It's a song Mike wrote about his brother. The guitar work towards the end to this day boggles my mind. Why didn't Korade and Chick play stuff like this on the studio albums? Easily my favourite song on this CD.

Songs like "If" and "Disturbing the Peace" keep you going, especially the latter with its never-ending riffing and clocking it at over 12 minutes! It was just Oliver and his drum machine but you can feel that him and Mike were really into whatever they were doing. It's a shame this band didn't last cause there was something magical about them and they had all the potential there was to have. The reason I am rating it 4 stars is the lack of unity and somewhat raw production even though it serves the purpose of the CD quite well at times. I highly recommend you to check out the two FON albums. They are both tragically underrated and might surprise you a lot if you've never heard Mike's "darker" and "metal" sides before.

    Album Description

After nearly a century, blues music, as an art form, continues to thrive and evolve. The musicians who live and play the blues have changed and have grown along with the music. W.C. Spencer is one of these people. The bluescat has amazed audiences in the U.S. and abroad with his own brand of rhythm & blues and this second album for Catscan picks up where the first album Bluescat leaves off. Spencer has accomplished what has been called impossible for singing and playing all of these instruments at one time. Take equal parts of bassist, guitarist, harmonicist, drummer, vocalist, inventor, writer and arranger; add a lot of hard work and you get...Over Time. A collection of blues from old to new, this album traces the journey from acoustic to electric blues and beyond with style and poise. From W.C. Handy's Atlanta Blues (1915) to Arthur Pettis' Goodboy Blues (1930) to Bell & Jones's Born Under A Bad Sign (1967) to W.C.'s own Some of the Things I've Been Meaning To Do, Talk To Me, The Country Minstrel and I'm Your Monkey (1998); Spencer charts old and new territory alike with his live ensemble renditions of uptown, country, jazzy and original blues. In a genre inhabited by so many fine players, check out a real originator and intrepreter.

Like the man said, go ahead and drown yourself - in the blues.

4 out of 5 stars W.C. Spencer Does It Again!!!.......2002-12-22

W.C. Spencer is a one-man Blues band who has been entertaining audiences on the East Coast for several years now. His first CD, "Bluescat", was a great premiere effort that showed the talent of Mr. Spencer and should dispel the myth that One-man Blues bands are a thing of the past.

On this recording He again treats us to a nice selection of Blues standards as well as a few gems that he wrote himself. With very few exceptions, Spencers plays the drums, bass, guitar, harmonica and sings, (all at once), and does it with the authority of a fully-manned Blues band. The results are genuinely fun to listen to and I'm hoping that we will hear more from this gifted artist in the future.

i definitely recommend you give this recording a listen.

ringtone88.com , the song topped the chart in 17 countries around Europe! Out of all Anastacia's single releases, I definitely consider One Day In Your Life to be the best - the beat is so funky and Anastacia's voice is so strong. Track 6 is How Come The World Won't Stop (9/10). This song is another superb mid-tempo track with some beautiful lyrics and memorable beats. The song is more indie-oriented with its acoustic guitar rather than the traditional Anastacia style (pop/rock/ballad). Track 7 is Why'd You Lie To Me (10/10). This was the third single to be taken from Freak Of Nature in September 2002. The song didn't even peak inside the UK Top 20 - probably through lack of promotion, which is a great shame because that amazing video looked very expensive!

The album continues with the funky Don'tcha Wanna (10/10). This amazing slice of pop funk adds that much-needed drop of R'n'B to Freak Of Nature. The song has an amazingly heavy bassline - it's very slow and seems like a some huge ship trying to slowly make its way through the water using all the force it can. The song also has that dab of rock and Anastacia's voice is wacky beyond belief (in a good way). Track 9 is Secrets (10/10). After all that grooving around to Don'tcha Wanna, Secrets provides that relaxing safety net for all the fans of Anastacia's soothing and soft voice. She gives the booming vocals a rest for this mid-tempo ballad about her childhood. Track 10 is Don't Stop (Doin' It) (10/10). Anastacia speeds things up with this catchy (and camp) disco pop number that will get any party-goer up on their feet! Definitely an album highlight. Track 11 is I Dreamed You (8/10). This is an average ballad about a man that Anastacia dreamt about - not very interesting and lacking in music ability. The song starts off good, but Anastacia goes a little OTT as she continues her warble-fest towards the end. Track 12 is Overdue Goodbye (Reprise) (10/10). This superb reprise to track 3 has some superb and exotic instruments while Anastacia's vocals echo around your room. "Goodbye..." she booms as it echoes for a few seconds at least. This gives the song a more epic feel. Overall, a superb end to an even more superb album!

    OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

Anastacia is one of the most exciting female artists to arrive on the pop scene for quite some time - and Freak Of Nature should see her around for quite some time to come, too! If you have ever been interested in Anastacia's music, you should not hesitate to buy this phenomenal album. Her unique vocal ability, trademark songs and signature fashion-style is so original and she's eventually getting the praise she rightly deserves - buy Freak Of Nature from Amazon.com now!

    1 out of 5 stars Anastacia Overshoots.......2002-06-04

This artist gets a lot of exposure so I picked up the album to see what was the deely-o. Honestly, don't waste the money. Whip out your old Taylor Dane CD and clip out a picture of Carmen Electra - and you are covered. Cliched lyrics aren't helped by Anastacia's quirky voice.

5 out of 5 stars This Lady has got it ALL!!!!.......2002-05-26

Well, i dont really know where to start! When i first listened to this CD i was in shock! The mix of raw talent, style and overall power blew me away!! Lyrically this Album is great...and vocally...well, AMAZING! 'You'll Never Be Alone' is one of the most beautiful songs iv ever heard. This womans vocal range is super and so her the range of songs on this CD. Whatever ur mood, whatever ur taste...theres something in this for everyone. A strong recommendation to people who appreciate REAL talent and inspiring music. Best album of the year...By FAR!

5 out of 5 stars Blue Eyed Soul for the Gay Set -.......2002-04-15

...Anastacia successfully combines Pop, Funk, Dance and R&B into one rather slim and drop dead gorgeous package. The opening title track acts as Anastacia's mantra "look at me and see a little girl inside my skin / It's supernatural / I'm a freak of Nature" and "just cause I like sipping on champagne / doesn't mean that I'm afraid of the rain." Anastacia stakes her claim as the one to resist the cookie cutter mold. Gotta love the 'tude. Stellar numbers with rather cliche titles shine. "OverDue Goodbye" and "How Come the World Won't Stop" capture the girl with the greek name's vulnerable side. The shining tune "Why'd You Lie to Me" treads Deborah and Whitney territory, but with a fresh slant. Anastacia's been there with a boy and is bitter,..
The single slated for U.S. release, "One Day in Your Life," picks up where "I'm Outta Love" left off... Destined for club success, this high energy R&B thumper is hot, but the real struggle is whether Anastacia's intense vocal prowess can translate to radio airplay.
In an environment dominated by Ja Rule collaborations and Timbaland remixes, can Anastacia find her niche in the pop market? She's got the look, she's got the chords and she's got the substance to shine... One minute hip hop, the next soul with a house flare, Ms. Blige can take on any number and thrill her fans. It's truly about talent in the end. Passion and dedication are undercurrents saavy listeners can easily pick up on. Perhaps the U.K. ladies and gents are a bit more forgiving of labels. If only we were as sophisticated.
"She who will rise again" - the Greek translation of Anastacia. So what if success isn't around the corner for this fiesty blonde? I'll be okay with that, at least she stuck to her guns and defied being attached to one genre. She tells us what it's like to be a girl with a little drama thrown in for fun. Being a fan, I'd feel obligated to purchase whatever she releases...
