nothing new, but fun nonetheless.......2007-07-21
Confession time: I'm a child of the '80s, but I never listened to Madonna, Prince or even the Talking Heads. I like to think I came of age with Gwen Stefani, Tori Amos and, well, Ani Difranco. Even when I was younger, lyrics took precedence over sound, substance or production, and I think these are the reasons why the first riff of The Dollyrots new album, Because I'm Awesome, was instantly appealing.
With quick guitars, a girl singer and short, snappy songs, I was immediately hooked. The Dollyrots call themselves a punk band, but I hear similarities to Liz Phair, Sleater-Kinney and, of course, Joan Jett, especially when these three artists were at the pinnacle of their success. There is a formula here, but there is nothing watered down about The Dollyrots. These are very radio-friendly songs about dangerous crushes, best friends, heartache and leaving town (specifically L.A.).
Speaking of L.A., The Dollyrots hail from the City of Angels. This is their second album, and it's distributed by Blackheart Records, the label owned by Joan Jett. I don't hear anything new here, but I'm okay with that. Working within the pop punk genre, The Dollyrots have mastered the call-and-response chorus, and I love singing along hoping their next album will channel Liz Phair. Don't miss the title track!
Toothless.......2007-05-07
Joan Jett has taken the vicious, snarling debut album Dollyrots and turned them into an anonymous power pop band. Yes, Because I'm Awesome is entertaining and fun to listen to. But the raw spirit and conviction present on the first album is missing. BIA is way too smooth and polished.
Great for corporate radio and perfect for Warped Tour, but miserable for fans of the original band. The spunky cover of Melanie's Brand New Key makes you realize what could have been.
Joan, you were a pioneer and we will always love you. But please stop turning great bands into Clear Channel fodder.
Because they really are!.......2007-04-05
"Because I'm Awesome" is a well produced, fabulous album(CD ?). I'f you're into to power pop/punk, then this is the group for you.
The Dollyrots Are "Awesome!".......2007-03-27
The Dollyrots play fun alternative music with an upbeat tempo that can fill even the most cynical with joy. The lead singer/bassist Kelly is amazing, full of spunk and vigor. Their guitarist Luis plays amazing riffs and their drummer Chris Black set a powerful backbeat. Like Gwen Stefani in her early NO DOUBT days, The Dollyrots are a fun band guaranteed to brighten your spirits on a rainy day - Because we're all awesome!
Five Stars For "Because I'm Awesome"? That's Right!.......2007-03-25
"Because I'm Awesome" is more than enough proof that The Dollyrots are one of the best sounding power pop/punk bands in America today. As the follow up to their very enjoyable first cd "Eat My Heart Out", it brings with it a slightly harder edge, and a not quite so sweet aftertaste. But then something had to be up when I noticed the happy maniacal bunny of cover art past replaced with a stressed, emaciated, and gas mask donning one! "BIA" gives returning Dollyrots fans plenty of what they'll be looking for; Kelly Ogden's one of a kind vox which can range from adorably sweet to brash and gutsy, Luis Cabezas's grainy punk guitar riffs, and songs that you'll be liking before the first verse is finished. Production quality is high too making for an awesome (ok, sorry) listening experience. These guys really know how to rock and create memorable songs with excellent arrangements. Here's a brief take on some tracks:
Because I'm Awesome - Excellent song that really gets the cd off and rocking. I can picture kids singing with the chorus of this song while the derision and sarcasm of the lyrics goes completely over their heads.
My Best Friend's Hot - This song sounds very much like it could have come off their first cd and it's just incredibly good! I doubt anyone could walk away after hearing it and not be its' tune slave for the rest of the day.
Out Of L.A. - The rock 'n roll life on the road is always an adventure and The Dollys create a good song here by drawing from their reflections about it. - See them live on tour 5.12.07 at "The Abbey Lounge in Boston" .
Brand New Key - As first done by Melanie this is a fine little tune, but in the hands of The Dollyrots it becomes a jacked-up rock mosh while still retaining the carefree charm of the original. It's pretty amazing to listen to and one of this cd's best songs.
Hysteria - A good, solid rock song and one of Kelly Ogden's sultrier vocal performances. The chorus background vocal harmonies sound very cool.
A Desperate S.O.S. - Punk energized ventings about the downside of techno-society and the post 9/11 era. Take that George W.!
Watch Me Go - An excellent foot stomping, finger snapping, kiss-off that's sure to resonate with alot of women. Nice bass.
This Crush - Sixties girl group sound that's a can't miss with Kelly O's singing voice. I don't think The Angels or Shangri-Las ever contemplated doing a guy in while he's sleeping though.
Nobody Wants U, Turn You Down, and Tummy Tum Tum are each very good too. Cat Calling and 17 are ok and are starting to grow on me. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that former Dollyrots drummer Amy Wood's work on this entire album is excellent.
In order to hear sound clips of these songs you'll have to go to The Dollyrots website, myspace site, or their label's website due to Amazon not currently having any sound samples available. Trust me you won't regret buying this cd.

Appropriate Album Title for a Terrific Album.......2007-04-16
When it comes to Tiffany (and several other 1980's singers) the problem is that fans, critics and people who aren't fans won't let the singer "grow up" so to speak. They label each new album the artist puts out after 1990 as a "comeback", but really, how many times can someone make a comeback? Well, Tiffany has done it at least three times, and "Dust off and Dance" is another great album by the former teen-queen, far superior to any of the present so-called teen-queens. It should be noted, that Tiffany's album prior to this one, "The Color of Silence" is another superpb album, but with an entire different feel to it.
"Dust off and Dance", is quite likely to be a reference to Tiffany herself dusting off the past (be it harsh reviewes, haters, or the mood of "The Color of Silence"), and quite literally just dancing. At least "Dust off and Dance" doesn't try to be anything more than a dance / disco / Hi NRG album - and a fantastic one at that. Production blends the best of modern day sounds with a bit of the 80's, combined with Tiffany's powerful voice and some great lyrics, most of which are written by her, resulting in an album that is easy to listen to over and over again.
The songs may not seem as deep on the surface as those from her previous album, but they all tell a story and do have important meanings to them, like enjoying life as it is so short. Some of the songs and lyrics are a bit suggestive, but the album was written, according to Tiffany, with her gay fans in mind. It's also appropriate for the dance floor (obviously). While the overall mood of the album is upbeat, there are a couple of ballads, but even they are upbeat. It's great to see that the album has been getting some play on the hit TV series "Ugly Betty". The biggest problem with the album though is that it is too short - only eleven songs, two of which are remixes. But hey, quality over quantity anyday.
Highlights: Be With U Tonite, Ride It, Na Na Na
Low Points: Kama Sutra, I Think We're Alone Now (remix)
kids point of view.......2007-04-04
cd was for my daughter and she thought it was excellent.
A good attempt to comeback.......2007-01-11
Not one of Tiffany's best work. This disco-ish CD is ok, not the Tiffany that we're all familiar with. It's nice to see she's still recording, but it doesn't measure up to her earlier work. Her last CD "Color of Silence" was excellent, the songs were great. Had more feeling in it. If you're a Tiffany fan like me, then add this to your collection.
2 and half - Not Quite What I've been Expected..........2007-01-10
Well, I have to say I only start to know and love Tiffany from her come back 6 years ago, with some amazing songs like "Open My Eyes" and the exceptionally heart melting "If Only". I have absolute no idea what sort of her music in the 90s or 80s and have no intention of exploring it since the pop music from those period is a bit odd for me. Since this album was rather new and the review said it relflects her best in the past, I decided to buy it. There are some songs that quite upbeat, with lots of catchy tunes but I still prefer her previous work. This album is a bit blend, lack of emotion and there are some songs just sound alike. It's unavoidable since Trance and House just got a limited sound effect to play around with in the arragement, I think you know what I mean. Anyway, if you looking for a feel good family or even birthday party, you can go with this one. But if you fond of flowing with emotion and smooth melodies, then the last album would be the best choice.
High Energy Club Music.......2006-08-14
Well U have to be a fan of pop or club music to really enjoy this latest CD of Tiffany's .Her latetest effort is a complete 180 from her last cd THE COLOR OF SILENCE but I luv both due to the fact u get to listen to her great vocals but with that said Dust Off And Dance is the correct title for this So Get This if U WANNA DANCE! There is a basic formula in making a successful children's music CD: it's gotta be cool enough for the kids while staying tolerable enough to withstand repeated listens by the parent. Songs 4 Worship Kids: Awesome God passes the test and is a worthwhile buy for any parent seeking to expose their child to safe and quality music. Well recorded and arranged, the CD offers standard contemporary worship fare like "Give Thanks," "Change My Heart, O God," "More Precious Than Silver," and "Thy Word." The release also features a creative reworking of Rich Mullins's "Awesome God," intersplicing choruses with Bible verses read by the children artists. "Jesus Sees" is another track that will speak to children in their own voice and language. The upbeat "Every Move I Make" is also a winner. There are a few dull moments that fall flat, like the too-adult "Open the Eyes of My Heart." But for the most part, parents will be relieved to know that the CD is lively enough to keep kids' interest before they start wanting the latest Britney Spears, N'Sync, or Nelly release. --Michael Lyttle

Fun, playful, and engaging.......2006-10-23
I first heard this cd when I walked into our living room one afternoon and saw my wife and our two children practicing the hand gestures and dance steps for Every Move I Make. My wife had learned them at VBS and was teaching them to the kids. They were having laughing together, playing joyfully and having great fun. Since then I've listened to this CD many times and really enjoy it. Every Move I Make is my wifes favorite, I like Open the Eyes of My Heart Lord, my daughter likes Hallelujah Heart, and my son likes too many to list.
This cd will hook your kids, and you, in for an upbeat, uplifting and utterly enjoyable musical experience. I highly recommend it.

This album is beautiful..........2003-02-24
I honestly never thought that there could ever be a way to top or even come close to the last album "No One Else", but this new album "Awesome Wonder" is running neck-in-neck. In the three year hiatus between albums the Kurt Carr singers have made a few minor cast changes. After the disbanding of Kesha Ealy, LA Mass Choir veteran, Nicole Potts ["Jesus Never Fails"] took her place and after the disbanding of Corey Briggs, New Jersey import, Troy Bright, a former CD Hawkins Singer, takes his place. Despite the cast changes, the sound remains the same.
Backed by West Angeles COGIC's Choir Of Life, the recording starts off with "In The Sanctuary", a rousing worship and praise song, which modulates into the heavens. Then there's the forceful yet fun praise song "We Declare War", led by Kurt Carr and Jackie Boyd-De Raat, after that is "O My Soul Loves Jesus" , a beautiful praise song led by Nicole Potts. Then there's the rousing "I Almost Let Go", led by Sherron Bennett along with Choir Of Life member Tisa Wills. Then there's the hot, salsa flavored "We Offer You Praise", led by Carr and the proclaimed "First Lady of Worship and Praise", Judy McAllister the song is played by Alberto Salas and his band. Then there's the down home Charles G. Hayes meets Kurt Carr flavored "Jesus Can Work It Out" with Shervonne Wells leading with spectacular ad-libs on the drive. After this is the "Worship Medley", beautifully led by Yvette Williams. Then there's something we wouldn't expect from Kurt Carr, an urban song. The title track. "Awesome Wonder" thought it has a worship and praise feel to it has a hot urban beat and edge mixed with the Kurt Carr singers vocals, the song is hot! After that is the beautiful "The Blood Still Has Miraculous Power", lead by Yvette Williams and then there's the sizzling hot jam "At All Times", lead by Jackie Boyd-De Raat and Nicole Potts. Then the most beautiful song on the entire album "That's Just The Way The Father Is", smoothly led by Kurt Carr's newest singer, native New Jersean, Troy Bright and to end the album the singers do exactly what the titles says, they "Set The Atmosphere" for a blessing from the Lord.
I was blessed by this album and I'm sure you will be to. This album is beautiful and indeed a must have!
AWESOME INDEED!.......2002-10-29
God has truly anointed Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr singers. I listen to this CD at least once a day at work, and it lifts me up and helps keep my spirit high. The tracks are great - contemporary, yet traditional. The music will speak to your soul. Bill Engvall is Awesome.......2007-03-12
Bill Engvall is Awesome! That's all you need to know...ok he's full of good boy humor.
Now that's awesome!.......2006-03-11
From the moment I first heard Dorkfish at a friend of my dad's, I was an instant fan. I loved the Here's your Sign routine, not memerly because it made me laugh so hard that my ribs ached, but also because now that I've heard it, I realize that I agree wholeheartedly with it. I myself have had encounters with quite a few people who would've gotten signs if I'd had them to give. An example was the time I was bell ringing for the Salvation army, and a woman walked up to me and asked if I was with the Salvation Army. "No," I said, "I'm with the FBI." But that's getting off track. Some of my favorite bits on this CD are Snake in the Toilet, Pads, Smoker Aquarium and the requisite Here's your Sign. Of course the Shoulda Shut Up song at the end is another favorite of mine since I firmly believe that most guys, yes myself included, don't know when to shut up when we're talking to women.
Bad, bad, bad.......2004-10-12
Bill Engvall is one of the funniest stand-up comedians out there today; his "Dorkfish" CD is my favorite standup comedy CD ever. However, for some reason his jokes here are lame, predictable and old. His main focus here seems to be on private parts of the human body and farts. He overenunciates and uses the modern time too much. There are also too many jokes about his daughter on here; they are just not funny. "First we bodysurfed... in Texas, we call that drowning. So we drowned for a little while." That is a stupid joke. Although it is true that the word "awesome" is overused his son saying "my compliments to the chef" after farting at his mother isn't awesome, it's just stupid. No question about it; pass up this CD and buy Ron White's "Drunk in Public" CD. It is one of the funniest CDs in the world.
Now, this CD IS AWESOME!!!!!!!.......2004-09-07
Bill engvall is almost as good as Jeff Foxworthy. I mean, it's very very close, if there not the same. He talks about hating the 90's, Bars, and does a bit about overuse of the word awesome. He hates his neighbors dog, and pound puppies. One of the best bits was the "Smokers Aquiaruim." The BEST bit was "pads." He is mostly clean, though. "My compliments to the chef," by the CD and you'll get it. He talks about white trash, snakes in his toilet, surfing, and of course does here's your sign.
Some of Engvall's best.......2004-01-22
I became a fan of Bill Engvall upon hearing his segment of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour album. Since I like to listen to stand-up albums while I drive, within a month I'd purchased all four of his full-length albums -- this one, I think, is my favorite. The title routine, "Now That's Awesome," delves into a topic that bugs me (the misuse of language) and then goes on into some typical Engvall wacky examples. The stories about his kids (the son making him laugh, the daughter taking surfing lessons) are all great and bring the humor into a real universal context. Engvall is a real "everyman" comedian, except he's funnier than most of us.
And lest we forget, this album does include the requisite "Here's Your Sign" routine and comedy/country musical tracks. These won't particularly stand out from the similar bits on his other albums, but they're still just as good here. All in all, a great CD that I listen to often.

Album Description
About this CD (notes from the artist )
Topanga Dreams
Since 1988, I've lived in Topanga, California. This small mountain town has taught me the true meaning of community. By being there for each other, we can make dreams come true. May all your dreams come true...
Katyia's Dance
This song has evolved from being a solo dance performance piece in our Mystic Journey shows into a passionate tango...for two. So grab someone you love and enjoy the dance!
China Lily
This flute was a gift from my Dize (rhymes with pizza) teacher and is one of my favorites. Whenever I play it, I am transported to a place of inner peace and stillness.
Lhasa Love
I found this melody in a book of traditional Chinese folk songs, It was called Tibetan Dance before we transformed it into a lively multicultural boogie!
Aduman
Although there are many dialects spoken in the West African region of Guinea and Mali, the universal word for "sweet" amongst all the tribes is aduman.
Darjeeling Sunrise
Inspired by an Indian sunrise raga, this song reflects the experience that I had when I was on top of Tiger Hill in Darjeeling, India, witnessing a magical sunrise illuminating the awesome Himalayan mountains.

A Poetic Journey..........2004-05-05
I fell in love with the music of The Angels of Venice years ago, and thus when I learned that Suzanne Teng (a former "Angel") had produced a solo work, I was very excited. But the music on this CD easily surpasses anything Teng had done with the Angels of Venice. Lyrical melodies, accompanied by enthnic rhythms on traditional percussion instruments, overlaid with Teng's own haunting performances on Asian flute, transport the listener to another time and another place -- both in this world, and in the "otherworld" created by Teng's mystical music edge. Tibetan singing bowls, Middle-Eastern bells, Celtic strings and a vast assortment of drums and wind instruments create a musical whirlwind that will leave the listener breathlessly awaiting Teng's next musical offering.
Nice!.......2004-01-01
Suzanne Teng, the original flutist with the group "Angels of Venice", breaks out on her own in this playful and exotic 1999 release. Teng shows herself a master of flutistry, not only the playing the standard western "C" flute, but also piccolo, alto and bass flutes, dize (Chinese bamboo flute), ney (Turkish flute) and panpipes. Her tone is rich and liquid, and her improvisations range from jazzy to sinuous to ephemeral depending on the style of the piece. Many of the selections have a strong Near- or Far Eastern flavor, but the mood remains gentle and cheerful throughout the album, without any of the dark intensity that characterizes some of the "Angels'" work. Teng is not alone in "Mystic Journey" either; many guest artists lend their well-established talents to the mix to create ever-varied layers of texture. Gilbert Levy provides intricate world percussion accompaniments, while cellist Martin Tillman, Prince Diabate, Hans Christiansen of Rasa and Greg Ellis of Vas (among others) also pop in to lend a hand, making for a richly orchestrated album that is full of apt and interesting surprises. Occasionally the flute melodies seem a little trite and meandering, qualities that are at odds with the earthy, percussive background, but overall this album is appealing. Teng's simultaneously light and down-to-earth compositions find ways to be relaxing without being boring--a common pitfall for many New Age artists. The music of "Mystic Journey" would be great for warm-ups and slow-dancing for belly dancers, as well as just pleasant listening after a mundane and stressful day at work. Other recordings featuring Suzanne Teng's flute-playing include "Awake Inside a Dream" and "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello" by the Angels of Venice. For more bamboo and metal flute improvisations, in this case without accompaniment, check out also Richard Warner's "Quiet Heart / Spirit Wind".
Fabulous!.......2002-07-05
I ordered this CD after only hearing two songs which I "accidentally" heard while flipping the channels of the television. There was a performance done on Public Access and I was surprised to see that a CD was available. I ordered one for myself and a friend who is a yoga instructor. I love this CD! It is perfect for yoga or meditation or even just in the background while working. The music is heartfelt and joyous and everyone who hears it immediately loves it. I would definitly recommend it, especially if you are looking to expand your collection of instrumental music. Personally, I love flute pieces, so this was a perfect choice for me.
Fabulous.......2001-06-28
I caught Suzanne Teng & Mystic Journey on vacation at this year's Topanga Days festival, but didn't buy the CD. I thought about their music the whole rest of the trip and ordered the CD as soon as I got home. It's truly magnificent and beautiful music, and I could listen to the CD over and over. Perfect background for anything - reading, meditating, special dinners, yoga, whatever. I find myself getting up just to move to the music. They're all very talented and the CD is a real stress-melter.
Makes you want to listen and dance at the same time.......2000-08-31
This is really an excellent independently-produced CD. Some of the tunes are fairly straight-forward, rhythmic wonders with Ms. Teng's incredible flute playing polishing them off. Others are more "world" sounding incorporating thraot singing and chanting. There is not a bad cut on the CD. Listen to Katiya's Waltz, and try to concentrate on the beautiful music while your feet waltz across the floor.

Awesome Wonder is what you get when you combine a charismatic worship enthusiast, a flawlessly tight band, and a knockdown-dragout choir. Complete with soaring soloists, an interactive congregation, and the heaven-sparked Kurt Carr presiding over the festivities, the Kurt Carr Singers do church in a praisin'-God-forever-and-stompin'-on-the-Devil kind of way. Although the music is done up with all of the pomp and flare imaginable, its content has a simplicity that penetrates the heart to inspire childlike praise. This third project from singer, composer, and producer Kurt Carr has set the standard for declaration of God's power. Even the more intimate moments have heart-rending qualities in their unfolding of God's goodness. But, putting the "Hallelujah!" back into the praise, several of these songs turn up the heat, until the easy-going celebration turns into ecstatic jubilation; this offers the most memorable draw of the disc. The intensity will cause a longing to be at the live show, which is the only thing that possibly could be better. --Israel Button

You will love this!!!.......2005-08-14
I've bought 3-4 copies of this CD because everytime someone borrows it, I never get it back! It is that good. You will enjoy the lush harmonies and intricate parts. It is definately gospel music at it's best. Kurt Carr has done it again.
A must-have for all Christian music listeners.......2001-08-17
i listened to this cd once and wasn't quite interested. however there was one song that caught my interet "set the atmosphere" #14. i began to listen to the cd more and more and now its in my player all the time. kurt carr is like fred hammond with a touch of marvin sapp and a sprinkle of donnie mcclurkin. his songs have powerful messages. no. 9 will defintely make your head bop, but the words will definitely minister to your soul. as well as his other songs, especially no. 1. this cd will make you wanna get up and shout!
EXCELLENT!!! EXCELLENT!!! EXCELLENT!!!.......2001-08-15
Having forged a friendship with Carr when he was a musician at our church in Hartford and when he was a fellow student at the University of Connecticut, I was certain that he had THAT special, God-given gift that is SOOOO evident in this project. Awesome Wonder is simply awesome!!! The vocals, in true "Kurt Carr" style, are phenomenal. The intracacy of the music is refreshing. The album as a whole is creativity at its pinnacle. "In the Sanctuary" pierces the heart spiritually and satisfies ones need for pleasing rhythms. The project is unique and well worth the investment.
Off The Hook.......2001-08-09
This CD will Tremedously Bless anyone anywhere. The track I almost let go, Has ministered to my heart, my mind, and my soul day in and out. Cause there have been plenty of times "the the devil thought he had me, but Jesus came and grabbed me so I wouldn't let go." I would encourage anyone who dosen't already have this CD to go out and get it you will not be disappointed. I promise, The CD is a Blessing from Beginning to End.
Totally Awesome.......2001-04-21
Praise GOD Kurt Carr is blessed, better than blessed. I can feel why he wrote each piece. I love the entire CD. I'm a gospel singer, trust and know that I know good vocals when I hear them. The Kurt Carr singers are talent in pure form. Not only does the group have talent but they feel what they are singing. The reason why I know is, I can feel what they are singing. The annointing passes thru this CD to the listener. Kurt Carr keep pressing towards the mark of the prize of the high calling in Jesus Christ.
God Bless

True Hi-NRG.......2002-11-09
If you like Hi-NRG this CD is a good one to start. It has some favourite tracks and some songs, who were hits but not as succesfull than other tracks of the same singers. The Vol.1 of this collection is better, but this one still no failure! I also highly recommend the series Gay Classics Vol. 1-12. Great Hi-NRG.
Too bad.......2000-03-10
The title has only three songs that worth the acquisition: -Street Dance - Break Machine -Hold on to my love - Jimmy Ruffin -Sky High - Jigsaw The rest of the tracks is the same if are included or not in the CD: they are too bad.
