Album Description
The sixth release on Melissa's own Right On Records, this disc maintains all of the passion of previous Ferrick albums, yet is infused with a new invigorated sense of urgency. Produced by Ethan Allen (Throwing Muses, Patty Griffin) the album's all-star cast of musicians include Daren Hahn, Julie Wolf, Tegan Quin, Erin McKeown, Natalia Zukerman and Rachael Davis. The emotional honesty of her lyrics, the force of her vocal delivery and the disciplined fury of her musicianship all come together on this disc to create her strongest release to date.
Customer Reviews:
New territory for Melissa.......2007-01-11
This is not the old Melissa Ferrick...but change is not a bad thing. After all, who wants the same thing for dinner every night? Her talent as a guitarist and singer still shines through on every song. The songs are richer in musical depth than past efforts, with the same insightful lyrics Melissa always delivers.
Ferrick comes roaring back with a winner.......2006-10-27
After a two-year hiatus of touring and falling in love, Melissa has returned with an album which rivals "Freedom" for passion and intensity. But guess what, fans? This time she's got a band! Yep, that's right, on In The Eyes of Strangers, Melissa has fully developed her inner rock stars and expanded her usual folk-rock sound to include the keyboards of Julie Wolf and the pulsing drums of Daren Hahn. To me, each Ferrick album sounds like shadowy blueprints for her impassioned live sound, but with this record, she created something which truly stands on its own with, dare I say, a pop rock sound. I'll take you through it, track by track.
Never Give Up: In a perfect world, this would be a single for Melissa; it's got a very catchy rhythm. This track is light, peppy and free, and beautifully sets the tone for the record. Natalia Zukerman accompanies on dobro and Tegan (of Tegan and Sara) provides backup vocals. 5/5
Inside: Formerly a charged but acoustic song, this song is fully reinvented with organ and that marvelous drumming. Listen to the brief organ interlude near the end of the track and prepare to be enraptured.
Everything You Get: Erin McKeown provides a fun electric guitar part on this track, but Melissa's vocals are at the forefront. Julie provides "poolymoog keyboard bass" and "clavinet, grand piano". I have no idea what a polymoog keyboard bass but it sure sounds cool. The chorus is joyous, with Melissa questioning "nothing is wrong, maybe that's what it is."
Closer: This one also would fit beautifully on radio. The guitar part is catchy and carefree; I think of this song as "Everything I Need" but more grown up. Backing up Melissa's guitar is Julie Wolf on piano. Remember in "E-mail" how Melissa sang "the journey is the destination"? Well, with this track, you actually believe she means it as she sings "with every little bang i get closer" to success, to happiness, whatever; it's up to you judge. The point is that this song reveals a peace within Melissa, a renewed confidence and motivation.
One Year: A beautifully, purely happy song celebrating her one year anniversary with her girlfriend. Melissa sings her own backup vocals on this song. Another happy chorus (I'm sensing a pattern here) as she sings "you have my heart and nothing is gonna get in our way". This is the most pure love song I've ever heard from Melissa. Gorgeous.
Stuck: Julie's hammond B3 provides flavor to this song. Stuck actually remains pretty close to its live acoustic version, but she sings it with renewed focus. Julie's hammond lends extra emphasis to the chorus that the guitar alone couldn't give.
Rest Now: This is probably my favorite song after Inside. It's a beautiful tribute to Chris Whitley and also provides the album title in the lyrics "In the eyes of strangers we will recognize our own hotel vast horizons". Again, drums and hammond give weight and drive to this song. Melissa's feelings shine through beautifully here, given more pizazz by the added instrumentation.
Miss Liberty: Wow. Just wow. A searing cover of Dayna Kurtz's song, Melissa's version is a full on jazz/blues rock sensation. It starts soft, and by the middle she's almost screaming as she says "you leave me broken like a spine / split open like a melon that's been dropped from a high high place". The lyrics are superbly fitting as Melissa completely inhabits this song. Julie's organ and Daren Hahn's drums provide a truly thrilling dramatic conclusion to this intense, wonderful song.
Easy: Here the guitar is at the forefront, as Melissa sings with the lyrics with that same sense of inner peace. Live, this song used to sound a little bitter; now it appears she's accepted the past and moved on.
Come On Life: A songlet without a chorus, this song somehow sounds complete now, as Melissa has fleshed out the lyrics. This one pulls back on all the instruments, which leads perfectly into the acoustic It's Been a Long Time.
It's Been a Long Time: As the last track and the only solely acoustic track, this song provides a telling insight into Melissa's state of mind as she suffered from exhaustation earlier in the year and was forced to take a break from touring. In concert, she said, "This is for me, but it's also for you. Thanks for waiting." It's only fitting that the track is last, as it is the most insightful glimpse into Melissa's journey as an independent artist. Particularly insightful are the lyrics, "I can't remember when all this running started/ But it took about 8 years for something in me to slip / I gave all I could give / And then I just kept giving ... my body had up and left". If you listen closely, you can hear a faint tapping in the background, as I assume Melissa keeps time as she sings this song seated. It annoyed me at first, but is now oddly endearing.
To sum up my novel, if you've never experienced Melissa Ferrick, this is the perfect introduction. It's the rockiest album she's ever made, and, in my opinion, it's the best.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show.
The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.
From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Just what I wanted.......2006-11-06
I saw the making of the CD on TV. The cast does a great job. I have the CD in my car stereo and listen to it often.
I Want to be a producer.......2006-03-06
This recording is great! I saw the play in november and loved the music. I bought the CD a little later and i am still listing to it. The cast are all great singers and did a great job. The songs are witty and catchy and never get old. You should listin to this.(Warning:See the movie or the play before you listin to this, you might hate it if you've have not.)
Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13
While I'll abmit that Nazi regemes and Hitler are probably some of the least funny thing in the world...i have to admit that the words to Springtime for Hitler are hilarious, just like the rest of the songs on this cast recording.
While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.
As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!
I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.
Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12
My theatre group went to New York two years ago, adn we did a marathon 4 shows in 3 days. Each show got progressively better, finally culminating in seeing Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick's final performance of "The Producers." I have been a fan of Brooks' since I saw "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" 5 years ago. Naturally, I was beyond excited to see the show he made of his most brilliant film.
I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.
Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.
Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.
it won 11 (if im correct) TONY awards for a reason!.......2005-12-08
This is by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I got the chance to see it on broadway with Lane (unfortunatly not Broderick) and most of the original cast. For some reason, certain people seem to think this play is racist. First off, the whole thing is pure 100% SATIRE. I'm 15 and I can realize that. Also, are you aware that Mel Brooks is jewish? Yeah, so lighten up. I realize what Hitler did, and it will never be forgotten. But my God, get a sense of humor. In case you never saw the play, the Bavarian guy breaks his leg (making "It's bad luck to say good luck on opening night funny) and is replaced by the gay director for the song "Springtime for Hitler". ITS HILARIOUS! BROOKS MADE HITLER A GAY GUY! And why do you think he did that? Geeze... just lighten up!
So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

Louis and George Johnson formed the Brothers Johnson under the auspices of Quincy Jones in 1975, releasing this second album in 1977. With Quincy at the helm as producer, the duo quickly broke wide open with its debut album Looking Out for #1, which contained the No. 1 R&B smash "I'll Be Good to You" as well as the funk jam "Get the Funk Out My Face." The album's standout is "Strawberry Letter #23," their second No. 1 R&B hit, but it also contains "Runnin' for Your Lovin'," a Top 10 in R&B. Remaining tracks prove spottier, however, with significant filler between the two hits. --Tom Vickers
Customer Reviews:
Right On Time.......2007-02-03
The album is good. "Strawberry Letter 23" however, blows everything else away! For once, I'm rating a entire disc on one song! Five stars...
P.S., I didn't know that the song "Strawberry Letter 23" was a cover. The song was originally done by someone named "Shuggie Otis?" I've gotta find the original and check that out for myself!
An Essential Slice Of West Coast Funk.......2007-01-11
One of the more underrated releases of the 1970s - Brothers Johnson, and this disc in particular - have aged very, very well, which is more than you can say about 95% of their contemporaries. At the time, I know everyone noticed how great of a funk/r&b album it was - I had the album as a kid, and the magnificent cover of Shuggie Otis' "Strawberry Letter 23" was one of THE car radio hits of '77.
But I don't know if everyone noticed how THOUGHTFUL this stuff is, and the subtle sonic diversity underneath the grooves: fluid shifts from jazzy to danceable to folk/pastoral on the last tune, and through this broad musical range, the sense of rhythm and melody never fails. To pull this off and not come across as trendy, or pretentious is quite an accomplishment. These guys talent is never in question, but their musical and imaginative sense of adventure, combined with a genuine charm and sense of really enjoying what they were doing is what makes this disc sound fresh going on 30 years after it's original release.
It should be noted how specific the lyrical imagery is as well - at the time this disc was being made, times were getting a little weird, and the rather precise romanticism that emerges in the words here was - I think - another calculated move (and a good one): what might have seemed a little hippy-dippy in 1970 was a statement of calm, quiet defiance seven years later, at a time when cynicism or nihilism would have been the easier or more expected path to take - witness punk and disco - two contemporary musical movements that both produced some very interesting stuff, but also often got very soulless. All around - in words, music, groove and ambition, RIGHT ON TIME is a definite, late classic of the kind of West Coast r&b pioneered by Shuggie, Sly and Graham Central Station.
I don't know if Brothers Johnson's other releases quite hit the heights of this one, but with this release, they still accomplished far more than most.
-David Alston
This Is Real Music.......2006-12-29
8 tracks, 32 minutes and no filler in sight. This funk/soul/pop gem was released at the height of the disco era but doesn't sound dated, trite or embarrassing as so many LP's from that period do. Quincy Jones' pristine production along with top-notch studio players ensure consistent quality and some of the deepest, funkiest grooves on record. The incomparable Louis Johnson never ceases to amaze the listener with his brilliant bass playing (the dominant instrument here) and the Shuggie Otis classic, "Strawberry Letter 23" is remade here in a sublime, jazzy fashion with a fine vocal by George Johnson and a classic guitar break by Lee Ritenour. This is the second in a string of essential LP's The Brothers released in the 70's and is a testament to thier lasting popularity and influence. Essential.
¿CAN I SAY AGAIN?.......2006-06-12
"It was the era of the FUNK (Part II) with the smooth assistance of 'The God Father of Record Production,' Mr. Quincy Jones... I will never forget my one chance meeting with "Q" back in the '90's, in an elevator at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center based in Los Angeles, California the largest nonprofit hospital in the western United States. I believe he was visiting his ill mother at the time or maybe it was for personal reason...if my memory services me well... "AnyWay," for me it was a moment frozen in time and he was very cool and so was I too (careful not to freak him out...), so I took the one and only opportunity after our friendly encounter and greeting and asked him so what really is the key to music? He kindly replied, as he held the elevator doors for a second before exiting... "Melody my friend, Melody is KING!""
--A. David Burleigh (aka: "Big Dave") an 'AmeriCanadian' Record Producre/ Artist/ Singer-Songwritre.
Well Produced Funk.......2006-03-14
This cd still holds up I'm happy to say. I give 5 stars to Strawberry Letter 23 and the whole cd is strong. Compares to Earth Wind and Fire. Quincy Jones produced this album and it shows. It's like jumping into a timemachine back to the late 70's, early 80's. If you like smooth, funky R&B then you should check this out. Unfortunately, they didn't do a lot more. They have one other release of new material and then a greatest hits package. Too bad. These guys seemed to have a lot of potential. Great fun. Buy and enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Customer Reviews:
The Elders get better and better..........2007-03-02
This is a fantastic CD. The Elders are different than The Pogues, or Flogging Molly, but have a style that fans of those great bands will enjoy. Standouts include Bad Irish Boy, Send a Prayer, Racing the Tide, Gonna Take a Miracle, and Saint Brendan Had a Boat. One of my missions for the next year or two is to travel to see The Elders, since it doesn't look like they'll be in California in the near future. Check out earlier CD's as well, you can't go wrong.
Fantastic New Release from The Elders.......2007-02-17
Racing the Tide, the newest release from The Elders, shows off all the immaculate musicianship, strong songwriting and story telling skills of this Kansas City based Celtic rock band. Formed in 1998 The Elders have been rocking Kansas City and Celtic festivals across the country for the last 7 years. County Wicklow native Ian Byrne fronts the band, lead singer, bohdran and battle drum, with Steve Phillips, guitar (formerly of The Rainmakers), Brent Hoad on fiddle, Norm Dahlor on bass, Tommy Sutherland - drums, and relative newcomer to the band, Joe Miquelon on keys.
Foot tapping, sing-along beckons as the Cd opens with Send a Prayer. The band are well known for telling "true stories" at their live shows, and the first track is followed by some of these true stories... Uncle Charlie, Story of a Fish and Bad Little Irish Boy (could this bad little irish boy be Ian we wonder?). The title track Racing the Tide is my favourite cut on this CD, wonderful harmonies. Brent Hoad's incredible lyrics are showcased in Dear God, St Brendan Had a Boat (another true story if legends are to be believed). The track Australia is a departure from the majority of the Elders tunes, putting one in mind of a 1920's speakeasy. You'll rock out with Gonna Take a Miracle, and Right with the World.
I strongly encourage you to buy this CD.... and see The Elders live if you ever get the chance - you won't be sorry.
Excellent.......2007-02-12
The Elders are an excellent Celtic band. They have songs with energy and meaning along with fun. Ian is a great lead singer and the band has awesome harmony as well. Their songs DO stick in you head long after the last track. Well done...CHEERS!
Racing the Tide, by the Elders.......2007-02-12
A truly remarkable CD. The music is original and ranges from driving, up-tempo pieces that make the listener want to "crank it up" to a couple of tunes that slow things down just enough to help you get into the story that the song tells. Lyrics are creative and compelling. Some are just for fun, some tell important stories, and they stay in your head long after you turn the CD off. This is good stuff! D Schaal

Right Stuff? More like "Other People's Stuff.".......2006-02-27
This CD is great for dinner parties. Not as background music, but as the basis of an after-dinner quiz for all the guests. The guest who spots the biggest number of stolen themes in Conti's Right Stuff score wins the game.
Several reviewers below have listed many of Conti's rip-offs already.
But no-one has pointed out his remarkable heist of Tchaikovski's Violin Concerto .
I rate this an even worst score than the one for which he stole Miklos Rozsa's themes from Ben-Hur. Now there's another good quiz question.... Which fantasy movie did Conti decide would be best served if he didn't write his own music, but used Miklos Roza's instead and signed his own name to it?
Bill Conti, The great composer .......2005-09-13
Magnificent music from a composer who really knows how to please our ears: superb melodies, rich orchestration with a variety of strings, wind instruments and percussion and the perfect use of acoustic instruments. It always sounds good. When we hear the grandiose music of the North and the South, we are carried away by the lyricism and interpretations of the musicians. This is an essential CD for those who like symphonic music and who listen with no bounds - either on waking up in the morning, to be cheered up and given the energy for the day, or in the evening when counting the stars. Good film music becomes inseparable from the images we see. Press "on" and you'll see the pioneers emerging from the sky, then in the country and then in the settings in the south. You'll feel the presence of the characters in these two excellent film and television productions. You can even play the role of the hero yourself! It's magic! Yes, of course, this is Bill Conti's music. Bill Conti, one of the best composers that the American (and international) cinema has been lucky enough to have.
Too expensive for what you get from "The Right Stuff.".......2005-08-14
The music from "The Right Stuff" on this CD isn't even from the original soundtrack -- it's re-arranged and performed by a different orchestra, and, as noted in other reviews, includes alternate music that's not in the film. I agree with the reviewer who suggested simply recording the end title music from the DVD. The "North and South" music is quite ordinary, and for fans of that mini-series only. Maybe this is worth it if you can find it for $3 used, but it's a major rip-off at its normal selling price. Meanwhile, shame on Warner Brothers for not giving us a Music Only track on the great DVD Special Edition.
A Complete and Un-original Score.......2004-07-11
The music heard in "The Right Stuff" is monumental, exciting and mostly NOT Bill Conti. As another reviewer has pointed out... THIS CD IS THE COMPLETE CONTI MUSIC. Conti had very limited time to score the already-completed film. He generously borrowed the main theme from "Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto", and other compositions such as "Holst's Planets" and "Debussy's Claire D'Lune" are heard in the film. For these reasons, there will probably never be a "complete original soundtrack" of "The Right Stuff" since so much of the music in the film was not original to Conti. Unfortunately, some of the classical music is not even credited to the classical composers, so it appears the score is entirely Conti's own.
This is all that Conti wrote for "The Right Stuff".......2004-06-14
The music that Bill Conti wrote for "The Right Stuff" is all here... the rest of the score heard in the movie was not written by Conti, but was mostly classical music. Thats why there is only about 15 minutes of original Conti music on this soundtrack for that film.
North and South shows more originality and the actual London Symphony does a great job on this CD.... unfortunately, the entire 2 scores are less than 40 minutes. I gave this to a friend who is a Civil War buff.
Conti is a far better conductor and arranger than a composer and he is also a champion of film music, so I give this recording 2 stars.

Sound Track to your summer.......2007-07-24
Hepcat is a great American ska band. These guys have it going on and this albums grooves from the openning intro right through the closing number 'Open Season is closed'. The band is tight, the vocal harmonies are great, and they mix of styles from ska to rock steady to Carribean whatever is just good, good fun. Sound quality on this album is excellent. This will be on of those CD's that will note leave your player for weaks. Buy it and enjoy.
Brilliant.......2004-02-13
Having had the pleasure of seeing the band live in Amsterdam I can honestly say they are the best ska band in the world and deserve worldwide recognition.
Uplifting & Fun.......2003-11-26
Great music to listen to any time and anywhere!!!
Late Night Video.......2002-01-26
I was flipping through the channels one night and flipped past a Music Video. Something about it made me switch back. It was the Video for Hepcat's "No Worries". By the end of the Video I was hooked on the song. I spent the next several days trying to find the CD. I finally found a record shop in Redbank New Jersey that had the CD.
I was shocked they even knew who Hepcat was. I soon found out that this was one great band. I'm still addicted to "No Worries", and can't help dancing and singing when I hear it, but the rest of the CD is excellent also. This is one Cd that is well worth it's price.
Never leaves the CD deck.......2001-03-04
This album is definitely my favorite out of my collection. Its soulful melodies, talented instrumentals and lighthearted lyrics will brighten up your day. This album also has many instrumentals, which is my favorite aspect of Hepcat's music. Tommy's Song, Pharoahs Dream, and Baby Blues are the ultimate relaxation songs! So go and get this album, play it on a sunny day and drift away to the shores of Kingston and Montego Bay!

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-03-31
If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.
It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22
It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.
Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.
Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11
Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?
Highly recommended.......2005-10-23
I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!
A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.
Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.
just a warning..........2005-10-14
Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.
