Album Details
Digitally Remastered Double Anthology of the Pop and Soundtrack Composer from the 50's and 60's. Perhaps his Best Counterpart of Today Would Be John Williams. A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Like his good friend Esquivel, Henry Mancini mixed some mean orchestral Christmas cocktails. But where Esquivel was possessed by wackiness and whimsy, Mancini played things fairly straight and still managed to create a sound that defined his career and an era. Sadly, the selections here are pedestrian, even by the well-trodden holiday boulevard standards. "White Christmas," "The Little Drummer Boy," and "The Christmas Song" all benefit nonetheless from Mancini's genius for timing and dynamics. Even the mundane "Frosty the Snowman" gets some new life breathed into him thanks to Mancini's arrangement, and "Carols for Another Christmas" is a good example of Mancini's hip restraint. Merry Mancini Christmas, while not the maestro at his best, still imparts some of that madcap, martini-era holiday spirit as only Mancini knew. --Steve Gdula
Customer Reviews:
Not worth the effort.......2007-01-27
I just love Christmas music and I love Mancini's Pink Panther and others. I thought this might be a good addition to my collection and it turned out to be a dud. Nothing special at all.
Fabulous.......2006-02-23
This is the Christmas album you are always saying "who is this" when listening on the radio. Perfect for all ages.
Classic Christmas as you remember it.......2005-10-04
This album is for all those baby boomers out there who grew up listening to the great Mancini. Someone said this album was pedestrian. They couldn't have been farther from the truth! This will rekindle childhood memories of Christmas like it used to be. Pull up a chair by the fire, grab that warm apple cider, turn the Christmas lights on and enjoy!
Mancini is Magical.......2004-12-15
I come from a very large family and since the mid-sixties when my parents bought it we'd play this album during the holidays. We played it until you could hardly hear some of the songs without the crackling and skipping the LP's were notorious for. By the time it was totally inaudible the LP wasn't being made any longer. We were all crushed because our Christmas mainstay album was gone. (Particularly because we lost both parents some years ago within 2 months of each other and we always listened as a family to this album.) When the CD came out we were overjoyed to say the least. I ALWAYS cry as do all of us in my family when "Carol for Another Christmas" plays because it holds such dear memories of my parents listening to us massacre that song on our instruments EVERY SINGLE CHRISTMAS!!! But they always swore we played beautifully.
A Classic.......2002-07-13
Tasteful, traditional orchestral Christmas music. More importantly, "Carol for Another Christmas" may be the most beautiful Christmas composition of the 20th Century.

Nice Touch!.......2007-05-26
Midnight Lounge is unquestionably a more sophisticated JW with a sound played easily anywhere. The tracks are a smooth blend of jazz, R&B, and house boasting sensual melodies sure to please many of the fans.
A great choice; you won't be disappointed.
Tres Magnifique.......2006-11-02
What a marvelous achievement. My unexpected encounter with this album has been one of my great musical pleasures of 2006. The synthesis Watley achieves here is simultaneously thoughtful, relaxed, pleasant, warm, and yes, timeless. This record is THAT good.
Midnight Lounge, indeed. This is sophisticated modern music that not only showcases Watley well, but many of her influences too. Los Angeles never sounded so good. And Watley's iconic historical knowledge of thirty years of dance/R&B music is not just put to good use here, but fulfills much of the emotional promise of that music for so many of us. Hhhhhhmm, so good!
Jody's 'Midnight' Tonic.......2006-08-21
Fans of downtempo electronica would do well to pick this album up. 'Midnight Lounge' takes the beats of house, trip-hop, breakbeat and drum-and-bass and blends them with the warm melodies and arrangements of jazzy soul-pop. Producers Dave Warren, Masters At Work, and Rodney Lee (who does the bulk of the album) never allow the rhythms to overwhelm--they're just one part of the cozy soundscapes. And floating above it all is Jody Watley's smokey, velvety voice, which has never sounded better.
The album's theme seems to be about finding that positive "chill" place, whether literal (the title track) or within one's self ("The Essence"). Simple enough, but it also leads to some surprisingly reflective moments like the smoldering drum-and-bass track, "More." When she asks plaintively "Is the love gone?/Cause things have changed," she could be addressing a distant lover, but the line could also be applied to the record-buying public who lost track of her after her first two albums.
'Midnight Lounge' reaches it's emotional peak with a poignant cover of Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up." Dave Warren concocts a moody swirl of weeping synths and gently pulsing beats to compliment Watley's nuanced, been-through-it-all vocals. It's the album's melancholically resonant moment.
For the most part, though, 'Midnight Lounge' tends to look at the bright side of things. "Skin" embraces a sultry irony: it's lyrics talk about "searching for a kind of love that goes beyond the beautiful" but the creamy arrangement achieves the melt-in-your-mouth sensuality of Sade's 'Love Deluxe'-era. Friendships have ended in "Photographs," but Jody's only "thinking 'bout the good times." She says "everybody needs someone to love, someone to care" (the cushiony,Naked Music-esque "Whenever"), even the people who "cast shadows, trying to bring you down" in "Clouds." And the 8-minute-plus jazz-house remix of "Saturday Night Experience," courtesy of Ron Trent, is a blissed-out ode to "just groovin'" on a romantic Saturday night.
'Midnight Lounge' makes the perfect soundtrack to a night at your house with a few friends, conversation, cocktails and good times
Midnight lounge is addictive.......2006-04-07
I just thought about the Jody Watley marathon I had today while spring cleaning. I went from the first CD Jody Watley upstairs to Intimacy, which I just got last week to finally replace my tape. Then, I blasted some Affairs Of The Heart and Larger than Life downstairs. Midnight Lounge has been in heavy rotation since 2002, plus last week. Your music has a feel good quality to it, and bring back good vibes and memories. I mentioned in a previous email on how my friend damaged her Midnight Lounge last year, and panicked when she couldn't find it in her town. Your music never gets old, which is a sign of great writing. Besides, people tend to say that Jody haven't gotten the recognition deserved. Yet, those that hear her older stuff for the first time are pleasantly surprised. Many flocked to the new trends after "Larger Than Life" her sophomore release. I let a few co-workers hear midnight lounge in 2004 RI and 2005 NC. They all had great responses. One even thought it was Sade. Again, they all wanted to add it to their collection. We played it at one of many parties around 2003, and family from out of town responded by popping their fingers and swaying to the great sounds. They were feeling it!!! Plus, they knew who it was right away. Some of the best music out there is not included among the seven or so songs rotated on radio day after day. We are being deprived of some of the best songs that tell a great story, and can even add some wisdom to our lives. This CD does just that. I am so glad a co-worker alerted me that Midnight Lounge was in the Import section at Tower Records 2002!!! Miss Watley thanks for continually surprising us CD after CD. Now it's time to make us over with the upcoming release "The Makeover" this spring 2006.
killer hit.......2006-03-24
This is an all around good album. I particularly recommend it as background music while working.

This CD has become instantly one of my favorites.......2005-11-14
The Three Suns, an instrumental trio of the 1940's and 1950's, performed easy listening music that usually featured an unusual combination of accordion, electric jazz guitar, and organ. They honed their skills in the 1940's playing night clubs and hotel lounges, mostly on the east coast from Washington, D.C., up to Boston. In 1944, their recording of "Twilight Time" sold in the millions and pushed them to national prominence and into the ears of future first lady Mamie Eisenhower, who is said to have counted them as her all-time favorite music group.
The Three Suns were a family affair, founded by brothers Al and Morty Nevins on guitar and accordion, respectively, and cousin Artie Dunn on organ. In 1944, their recording of Morty's original song, "Twilight Time" (later a hit for the Platters), sold in the millions and pushed them to national prominence and also into the ears of future first lady Mamie Eisenhower, who is said to have counted them as her all-time favorite music group. In 1954, Al retired from touring with the group and began producing the group's recordings. Brother Morty followed soon after, and this signalled a change in the sound of the groups recordings. Compared to their earlier efforts, which were rather lean and stripped-down arrangements, the Suns' work as the 1950's progressed showed more experimentation, sometimes lush and beautiful, sometimes more quirky and comical, with various offbeat sound effects, slight chordal dissonance, and nearly pre-psychedelic organ and accordian.
In the late 1950's, Al and Don Kirshner went on to form Aldon Music, a publishing company based in the famous Brill Building. In the 1960's, Aldon published hundreds of hits by the likes of Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and others. Al died in 1965 after a few years of heart problems that had forced him to retire from even producing the Three Suns. Morty died in 1990 and Artie in 1996.
I myself love both albums featured in this twofer CD. First off, audiophiles should not be disappointed by the sonic clarity on this CD. The CD booklet contains some background information on the band written for the CD release, and although that information does not state whether or not the original master tapes were used in the making of the CD, for all practical purposes, the quality of the recordings here make it seem as if they were. The original liner notes from each album are also included. I also love the cover to 1955's SOFT AND SWEET, featuring a soft and sweet living doll reclining on a lavishly expensive sofa with Fido nearby, and the back cover to 1957's MIDNIGHT FOR TWO, showing a nattily-dressed couple flying in tandem through a starry midnight blue sky on what looks like a rocket-powered flying broom.
As for the musical selections, being a big fan of beautiful orchestral music, I prefer SOFT AND SWEET, which is more the romantic mood music album of the two. It contains several of my favorite standards, such as "Flamingo", "Moonlight in Vermont", "Stars Fell On Alabama", and "Skylark", all with gorgeous strings complementing the Suns' unique combination of accordion, organ, and guitar. One track, "A Sinner Kissed An Angel", was co-written by Hal David, later the lyricist of Bacharach-David fame. This is no doubt one of his earliest efforts, although of course, no lyrics are sung here in this recording.
MIDNIGHT FOR TWO was no doubt recorded more with dancing in mind, as several tracks are lively and upbeat. "I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You" begins with appropriately eerie ethereal organ and bells. The lone original song on the CD, Morty Nevins' "Intermission Time", contains cartoon-like sound effects and not surprisingly, what reminds one of an old theater organ. The CD ends with a bouncy rendition of the old Rimsky-Korsakoff composition, "Song of India", which is one of two bonus tracks, the other being a fairly romantic and dreamy version of "April In Portugal".
This is not very lush orchestral music, and I would suggest looking to Percy Faith or Mantovani if you prefer your instrumental standards drowned in string arrangements. I myself sometimes do, and therefore I also own almost all of the Percy Faith CD twofers thankfully reissued over the last ten years. It's just that the organ and accordion are the hallmarks of the sound of the Three Suns and are not to everyone's taste. But for me, this CD has become an instant favorite of mine, especially SOFT AND SWEET.
So this long and windy review concludes with my overwhelming recommendation to buy this CD if you are a fan of mood music from its golden era, the 1950's.

Interesting........2006-03-17
This could be background music the to any movie, television series or commercial from the 50's and early 60's. It grows on you. A "Baby Boomer's" delight.
the seminal cocktail culture composer.......2004-07-05
Finally, a stateside reissue of the seminal cocktail culture composer Bob Thompson's landmark lounge album, The Sound of Speed, has been released on CD courtesy of those pop culture archeologists at Dionysus, and the tireless efforts of Thompson's son, Spenser. The brilliant Thompson, a contemporary of such celebrated and better known RCA mood music magicians like Juan Garcia Esquivel and Henry Mancini, is long overdue for popular and critical re-discovery, and this crucially cool LP is a perfect launching pad for this revival.
Recorded in Rome in 1960, The Sound of Speed may seem relatively syrupy in our current culture of hyper-frenetic bass beats and pulse-pounding urban rhythms, but this music hails from a totally different context and era: The Space Age, when rest and relaxation were as much a part of our perceived future as electronically enhanced convenience. While Bob Thompson was at the peak of his powers, a lifestyle of luxury was promised for all, from the stay-at-home mom to the working stiff to the corporate climber. The soothing, stirring orchestration on this collection conveys both inspiration and intoxication. Each track is devoted to a different mode of transportation, most incorporating (or "sampling") the actual mechanical sounds of the object in musical question.
The soaring rhapsody of "Star Fire" (Jet Plane) and the bouncy lushness of "Early-Bird Whirly-Bird" (Helicopter) have been heard before on lounge compilations, but the rest of the dozen tunes here will be beautiful new music to the lucky listener's ears. From the continental coolness of "La Vespa" (Motor Scooter) to the dreamy drama of "Sub-Manhattan Blues" (Subway Train) to the aquatic aural atmosphere of "Sea-Spray" (Speed Boats) to the cosmic blast of "Count Down" (Missile), Bob Thompson will take you for one wild, wondrous ride. The destination for each traveler is the same: the sanctuary of your own sonically soused soul.
Along with the original cover and liner notes, the CD package also includes excerpts from an interview yours truly did with Bob for the Fall 2002 issue of ATOMIC Magazine, in which he humbly acknowledges the resurgence of interest in his music with bemused appreciation. Here's to you, Mr. Thompson: cheers, and thanks for the bright, shiny, brand new musical memories. The 21st Century welcomes you!

At Last...A LIVE Performance!!!!!!.......2005-11-01
I have been waiting years to hear the voices of Ferrante & Teicher!! I do realize this CD is comprised of various performances from their tours....great selections....and just hearing the monologues is worth the price. The symphonic performances presented...considering the sources available to them...are totally awesome! Two very talented men, very funny...although they are retired I am glad they saved these performances. Sound quality varies...but that is easily overlooked! More please!!!!!!!!!
not even for fans.......2005-10-29
Shockingly bad sound--the amateur quality you would expect from a pirate taping, not from this (up till now) respected label.

The Best "Now Sound" album of all........2006-07-23
This Xavier Cugat album is one of his best and the ultimate "now sound" album by any artist. If you like Cugat's albums from the 60s on Mercury and Decca, this one is probably the best. I'd like to see all the Mercury and Decca albums on CD.
