Mature Music.......2005-10-28
If you like artists with mature songwriting and mature vocal and musical arrangements, this is definitely the album to check out. Outside the realm of genre limitation, TTD just makes music, but he doesn't just perform different genres for versatility; For him, it comes completely from the heart. It's easy to see that he has a genuine love for music in general. TTD gets better and better with time. Anyone who's a fan can attest to that. Not a single bad song on the album. This is all well-crafted, precisely thought-out, and well-executed music. FANTASTIC ALBUM!
Impressive..........2005-09-30
Oh my... I honestly did not think this album would be THAT good. I had no idea what type of material was on this album, so I took a gamble based on others reviews and I must say that you guys did not let me down. If the US would give this album a listen, this would be a hot seller... I guess we're not ready for him. I have a lot of favorite tracks, so I won't post my favorites... it's practically the whole album. "Designated Fool" and, "What Shall I Do?" alone, is worth the money... I loved TTD in the 80s, but after hearing this CD, I have a new found respect for him... he is a true talent...not to mention that he arranged and wrote all of his tracks. I'm only in my 20s, but I love to listen to great music... and this is great music. If you're contemplating on buying this album... buy it!! NOW!!
An epic album...songs to cry to.......2005-08-24
Back in the late 80's I remember seeing Terence Trent D'Arby perform on MTV. He was and still is a great writer, performer, musician and artist. His first album "Introducing the Hardline, According to Terence Trent D'Arby" is still one of my favorites. You remember "Wishing Well" don't you? Ahhh, to reminisce.
After experiencing a lot of changes and hangups with the albums that followed, he relocated to Europe and recorded songs under the name of Sananda Maitreya. This was his best move because he found himself creatively. Being such a visionary, he crafts these songs like sculptures, making them so real in your minds that you can seemingly touch the words. He embodies what a music artist should be. Reminds me a lot of Prince, but with fewer albums and minus the hallucinatory fixation with himself.
"Wildcard!" is an album that wraps you up and comforts you in its flow, continuing to snuggle you even after the final song. I found myself connected to the songs "Girl", "Shalom" and "Some Birds Blue". Even so, if there ever was a perfect album, this is it. I find no fault with it, and I am greatly pleased with what Terence has created.
It is definitely an album you can listen to from start to finish, crying or laughing or dancing or cuddling. Doesn't matter, because if you like good music, you'll love it.
SANANDA MAITREYA'S WILDCARD.......2005-07-08
When TTD first released this CD in 2001, it was a German import and listed under D'arby's new name "Sananda Maitreya". Took a while to track it down. Interesting that it is available in the US under his more common name. This is a better copy with additional tracks. This is a killer CD.
Never let nothing stand between heaven and your heart..........2004-12-12
so you NEED to buy this album. NOBODY does harmonies, syncopations, rhythmic transitions, styles, or lyrics like this guy. The most UNIQUE artist on the planet today. Part rock, funk, jazz, inspiration.... just beyond compare. A true GENIUS.
Please excuse me while I go insane....
Oh Davina... perhaps you've seen her... been her... or are her
Just a sampling of some of the MANY truly original and inspired lyrics.
All that said, a few of the tracks I could have done without but when there's 19 cuts on a disc 3 marginal ones ain't too bad.
A feast for the ears!

Sananda at his best!.......2003-06-11
It has been years since a CD has come out and blown me away like this! Sananda (TTD) has written some of his best songs on this recording. I can't put it down. The songs have got great grooves and the lyrics are a combination of spiritual and sexy. The music and cool vibe are contagious. I saw him live at First Avenue on the Vibrator tour and was totally amazed at the great energy that he radiates! This is a fantasic album. Also make sure to see him on tour. It is a rare treat!
This Wildcard's an Ace of Hearts.......2003-03-23
I am not a music critic (but I play one online). Shame on all the so-called critics who ignored this great album because it was not released by a major record label.
I am a loyal fan of Terence Trent D'Arby (TTD) aka
Sananda Maitreya. The Wild Card opens with TTD's trademark intro/trailer that essentially sums up what the album is all about.
"...Fundamentally sound my karma's coming round, fundamentally blue
except when I'm with you my soul's excited", he sings in
a mellow voice accompanied by what sounds like a
banjo (to my untrained non- music critic's ears)
before launching into "O Divina", a paean to women and
to all those positive stereotypically feminine
traits "...Perhaps you've seen her or been her or are
her." The somewhat jazzy big band sound of this first
cut is a fitting opening for a collection of love
songs that celebrate femininity in all its incarnations.
Throughout the album TTD's singing is mature and
self-assured; not flashy and full of inappropriate vocal
pyrotechnics without true feeling a la Aguilera et al. He
hits the high notes only when required and uses the
full range of his voice to great effect including his
falsetto, which is probably passé in this age of
rediscovered machismo. This is soul singing at its finest. He
is not afraid to bare his feelings
with a vulnerability that harkens back to the golden
age of soul music. Otis Redding, the original "Mr.
Pitiful" would be proud.
All of the familiar TTD themes
are here - spirituality, lost love, loneliness, hope
redemption, positivity. Happily, there is no profanity or
dissing of women and no references to "booty" or
"thongs". This is thinking man's soul music that you can
use to nourish friends who are fond of junk food
but occasionally need and appreciate home cooking.
This is music that will stay with you long after the
song has ended, full of poetry and wonder and
surprisingly lacking in rancour or any hint of bitterness (which would be understandable given that an artist with his talent can't get a major label record deal).
He invites us in to his "Dark Places", a recurring
theme for TTD, to assist in "slaying my dragons by
trying to love them" but he doesn't wallow there.
Instead there is a candle burning, redemption at the end.
Which suggests that by confronting our demons we can
overcome them. And if all else fails just "Go on an let
your scream out". And he does on the "Inner Scream"- a
soul scream like Aretha's "Amazing Grace" or Al Green's
"Belle " that is ultimately healing and redemptive
The aptly titled Sweetness opens with a breathtaking chills down the spine intro, "s-iiii-n-g your magic spell into my ear..." And
sing he does.. This is one of those
songs that remind us of the power of music to inspire
and to heal. "I find a shelter in your wings" and "if
it were not for your sweetness, I would not know who
I am " Be Willing continues the uplifting
spirituality theme. The way he emphasizes "RE" in
"fearlessness is a fountain that RE decorates the dark" and the
little flourishes throughout this song are reminiscent
of Aretha's sometimes quirky but always effective phrasing.
One of the stronger songs that showcase
the beauty and strength of his voice and poetry is Shadows. Like
Stevie Wonder on Songs in the Key of Life, promising
love "until the day that Mother Nature says her work
is through" in Shadows TTD promises in a more
eloquent fashion to stick around until " your shadows
disappear". Comparisons to Stevie however highlight one
aspect of TTD that is missing from this album - there is
none of Stevie's Living for the City anger. TTD invites us
in to his dark places but we never really get to see
them.
As promised in the intro the album showcases a mature confident artist expressing his soul's excitement at the never-ending wonder that is life. This is a wonderful album!
Sananda is the only competition that Prince has..................2002-05-13
It is troubling to read some of the other reviews for this amazing album. Sanada has given us another masterpiece and I read of how some are critical because it sounds like 60's music and the like. Sanada is a throwback to an age when musicians, songwriters, singers were about art not sales. He could very well have given us "Sign Your Name" recycled for the 50th time by now. However, he chooses the road less traveled which is to continue to grow as an artist and a human being and we are blessed enough to take the musical journey with him. To be sure an album of this grandeur is sure to be lost upon the brain dead masses who buy the latest R. Kelly project. For those enamored with the top 10 Wildcard is sure to be a pearl cast before them they cannot begin to decipher. These 19 gems are exactly what a music lover is sure to feel. On the other hand, if you are looking for someone who is imitating the latest Neptunes beat this album is not for you. This album stays in heavy rotation for me. I take it to work, in the car and bring it in the house. I may need to order three copies. I play it and can never skip a track. Just when I think I am done with it I get to a song like "Suga Free", "Designated Fool", "Shalom", or "Love Can You Hear Me" and am fascianted all over again. I play it over and over and never can get bored. I have been fortunate enough to hear some of the out takes from this album like "Mona Lisa Laughing", "Windows" and "Some Birds Blue" which are incredible in their own right. This man could have released a double album if these are the songs he deems as "sub-par". His throw away tracks put to shame 98% of what passes for music today. If you have not bought this one yet do yourself a favor and make that order. You wont need another album until next year sometime. Peace...........
The Best Male Vocalist You Will Ever Hear!.......2002-04-11
This Man has a voice that is truly a gift from God. He has so much control over his instrument, it is scary. I love this CD more and more every time I hear it. It has fast become one of my favorite albums of all time. Why this man is not as popular as he was with his debut is beyond me. Do yourself a favor and pick up this as well as all of TTD's music. If tracks like My Dark Places, Sweetness, and Ev'rything don't move you, you can not be moved.
A letdown, in many ways, but worth hearing a couple times.......2002-03-13
I gave WildCard a thorough, 'headphones-in-the-dark' listening and formed the following opinions. Comparatively, it comes nowhere near the high level of quality TTD achieved with "Symphony Or Damn". That album was his high point, nearly a masterpiece, and one of the best albums by anyone in the 90's. I don't expect that level of quality from everything he does, but it did show me that TTD has the capacity to make superb recordings. It's hard not to compare his other work to it.
I'll first note the most obvious point about WildCard: TTD's singing is incredibly soulful, and he really gives it his all for every song. He's a brilliant singer and is one of the most talented vocalists in the world today. That said, WildCard has quite a few problems, even more than Vibrator, which was generally good but also had problems (too many for Sony as it turned out - they dropped him after it). The major problem on WildCard is the instrumentation and the production. Far too many songs employ poorly recorded and very generic electronic drums. You'll notice an obvious improvement in sound quality and inspiration during the few times he chose to use a real drummer; those songs sound fuller and meatier. Another problem is the fake, annoying synth sounds used on nearly every track. TTD has the same problem Stevie Wonder's had for the last 20 years: the songs are generally well written, but the overproduction, crowded mixes, and gimmicky electronics tend to obscure the true nature of the songs. TTD wrote some interesting chord changes, but you won't usually notice them because there's a lot of electronic noise obscuring the analog instruments which carry the tune (examples: "Shalom" and "O Divina", with famed pianist Jai Winding buried deep in the mix). TTD can be a very good songwriter, but he would be well advised to stop adding synth after synth overdubs, and playing them all himself in a sometimes amateurish way. His songs will generally stand up on their own with analog instruments like piano, bass, drums, etc, but he insists on tinkering with the mix, adding badly placed fadeouts, weird sounds, swirling headphone mixes, and other things like that which end up sounding gimmicky instead of inventive. He's obviously trying to make his songs interesting, and he does have a knack for doing so (almost everything on WildCard is interesting to listen to), but too much of a good thing often spoils it all. This is what I call the "Supermodel Sandwich syndrome": he uses that song's production technique on too many of WildCard's songs. It's a clichéd sound which worked on Supermodel, but doesn't work here.
As on all his records, TTD's amazing voice always carries the tune, and here again he has a real talent for creating interesting, sinewy vocal lines, but there are major problems with the lyrics on WildCard. TTD divides his lyrics between totally shallow (Ev'rythang, Suga Free, SRR-636) and his own unique form of free-verse poetry, which sometimes succeeds, but too often sounds overly wordy and cryptic. He's often striving for meaning and relevance, and it might sound like he's achieving it with his passionate vocals, but most of his lyrics on WildCard just end up going in one ear and out the other; forgettable and sometimes pretentious. You shouldn't have to read along with the lyric book to try to find out what he's talking about (and even that doesn't work). He's good at catchy choruses though; songs like My Dark Places and O Divina will stick in your mind for days afterwards.
Personally, I think TTD can do much, much better than this. I think he's a musical genius. WildCard sounds like a hodgepodge of leftovers, with O Divina being the only great song out of 18. It's a considerable letdown; not a memorable creation at all, though it does have consistantly good vocals and a few decent songs (the first three especially). In my opinion he needs to go back to the drawing board for his next album. He should let others assist him with production and instrumentation, and focus more on quality songwriting. Also, he is developing a sameness with his overall sound because he insists, perhaps narcissistically, on overdubbing only his OWN voice to do all the background vocals, when using other people might sound better and less repetitive.
I love the guy and his music, I'm rooting for him and I know he can do it. This album gets 2 stars compared to TTD's other recordings, but when compared to the godawful music of today being made by his peers, boost that to 4.

A rare event.......2002-12-13
In today's plastic pop world, it's nice to hear music that is original, yet draws on many different influences. TTD is such an artist and unfortunately thanks to his uncategorizable sound, his music goes unnoticed. The public doesn't like being challenged or having to take the time to actually HEAR music. They are used to being visually assulted with artists who look great, but whose music is basically simple and substance-free. Terence is all about music. He isn't a commercial artist, but is honest, soulful and has a hell of a voice. He is kind of cross between Prince, Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. Being a huge fan of all those three, I can't help but love TTD as I have since he first came into our public concience in 1987.
His latest album is a cross genre disc with many great songs. Best tracks: O Divina, My Dark Places, Shalom, Sweetness, and Testify. If you enjoy real music and like albums that are real ALBUMS and not just collections of same sounding songs, check this one out. Also, check out three of the best albums I've ever heard:

Magical.......2002-11-14
I first listened to this album roughly about a year and seven months ago in its origninal incarnation with the free download. It is november of 2002 and I still pull so much from this album after so many turns on my cd player. The energy in this masterpiece is beyond the physical. If you allow it, it can effect your soul and emotions. Creativity pours from Sanada's soul and magically pours into the depth of your heart. I have purchased dozens of records over the years, yet nothing has had the lasting effect that Wild Card AKA Solar return has. Sananda should continue, if he is capable,(recording contract issues) of creating this music of freedom. Soul on a disc for real.
A Good Album by a Forgotten GENIUS!.......2002-07-07
no matter what Name He is calling Himself these Days one thing is for certain the Guy Can Sing/Sang&Write a Song like nobody's Business.when I see all the Neo-Soul Acts& a Lenny Kravitz,Seal&others I can't help but wonder where TTD fits in overall?? this Guy was Huge for a while back in the day.for a Minute it Looked like He might Challenge Michael Jackson&Prince as The Man that could Blend R&B&Pop really well.this Album is a Combination of His Last Few Albums.the downsides are His up-dated Beats on some of the tracks."Shalom" is my Cut it combines Elements of 70's Steive Wonder Meets Steely Dan&it works.TTD paid the Price for expressing how He thought of Himself&that is truly a Shame because He has been Slept on.The Man Is one of the Most Important Artists that The World it seems has forgotten.and like the ALbum title He truly lives up to that.
Worth the wait.......2002-05-23
As I'm from the UK I had to not only pay the dollars necessary to buy what is an imported CD (to the US) but also the shipping. This is in itself a statement of my desire to hear this album after such a long gap after Vibrator. I must say it doesn't have the immediate impact I found with Vibrator or in fact the fantastically crafted lyrics but it has a new subtlety that grows on you with furhter listenings. I was initially worried that in having so many tracks the album was somewhat diluted. Thankfully this was unfounded and the album has an abundance of great tracks and I can honestly say that none have you searching for the forward button. His voice is as soulful as ever and the tracks will have you repeating them over and over. Another truly great album from one of the most underrated artists of all time. All I can say is that if you gave up with TTD on album 2 and you love soul music then you've deprived yourself of 3 of the best albums of all time (in my opinion). Buy this album and listen to it over and over - you'll love it.
