5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2007-01-18

I got this CD for my husband for Christmas, he loved it and plays it all of the time. The package arrived promptly, a plus during Christmas time! Thanks Amazon, I look foward to doing business with you again.

4 out of 5 stars Burnin' Sky.......2006-08-15

Bad Company was a favorite during my early 20's and I always wanted this (back then ) album. So now I purchased the CD with one of my favorite Bad Company songs' "Burnin' Sky".

4 out of 5 stars ANOTHER EXCELLENT ALBUM BY THE NEXT LED ZEPPELIN.......2005-08-29

When I first this album in December 1985, I thought this was recorded after STRAIGHT SHOOTER and before RUN WITH THE PACK (This album had a more commercial sound to it.) because the music sounds like the first two albums. Anyway, the intro thundering and lighting is an outstanding sound effect for the title track that features excellent vocals, drum playing, bass guitar riffs, and the multi-layered guitar at the beginning and end. The raindrops from MORNING SUN that features excellent vocals, flute solo by ex-KING CRIMSON MEL COLLINS, and the 12-string guitar is also an outstanding effect that follows the repeated thunder at the end of the title track. LEAVING YOU is an great song with excellent guitar riffs, and LIKE WATER that features excellent vocals, organ, rhythm and slide guitar riffs is probably my favorite song on this album. KNAPSACK sounds like a song that was played in cave, but I do not like PAUL'S voice on the group written EVERYTHING I NEED; it sounds like the 1950s style of singing. Meanwhile, HEARTBEAT sounds like MICK RALPHS AND PAUL RODGERS playing harmony lead guitar. Plus, PEACE OF MIND that features excellent sounding lead guitar, harmony vocals, and organ and PASSING TIME are great piano ballads. TOO BAD (The album version and the anthology cd say that MICK RALPHS wrote this song, but the original and remastered cd versions say that PAUL RODGERS wrote this song) is an excellent guitar rock song, and I love the way PAUL AND MICK play guitar on MAN NEEDS WOMAN that also features excellent sax by MEL COLLINS. The closing group written song MASTERS OF CEREMONY features excellent reverse drum effects, distorted vocals, the sax, organ, bass guitar, and quiet lead guitar riffs.

4 out of 5 stars Some unique tunes from the Company.......2005-07-30

I'm in the process of carefully building an appreciation for classic rock, so I'm still new to Bad Company. However, they've become my favorite group. So maybe my perspective will be useful to somebody. I found Burnin Sky to have quite a few inspired songs. They're catchy and different, but certainly not a departure from the original sounds and thoughtful lyrics that made the band famous before this album. The flow from the title track to 'Morning Sun' kicks of the album well, and the gritty guitar in 'Leaving You' is great. Paul Rodgers probably couldn't write a bad lyric if he wanted to. Then 'Everything I Need' mixes several styles but still holds out, which is impressive. 'Passing Time', again, has great lyrics and a good beat. 'Too Bad' is one of my favorites, I'm surprised it wasn't a hit. 'Man Needs Woman' has good rhythm too, and just as much power. Suffice it to say you'll like at least a few of the tracks here. Give Burnin Sky a good chance.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - A forgotten Bad Company gem.......2005-05-22

Burnin' Sky (1977.) Bad Company's fourth album.

Although the first release from Bad Company, their 1974 debut album, was a classic rock masterpiece and is appropriately hailed as such, subsequent releases from the band were not as well-received. This was a shame, since they were nothing less in the quality department. All of albums that the band released with the classic Rodgers, Ralphs, Burrell, and Kirke formation were excellent, They had attempted to broaden their horizons many a time, most notably at first on their 1976 release Run With The Pack. This worked well, in my opinion, since Pack is my favorite Bad Company album. How does the follow-up, 1977's Burnin' Sky measure up? Read on to find out.

To put in the simplest terms possible, this is the Bad Company album that time forgot. Although it is an excellent album, it never achieved the success that earlier releases from the band did - a shame since this really was some great music. There is only one hit on this album, and that's the title track. Fortunately though, the lone hit present on this album is one of the band's best songs ever recorded. It's straight-up classic hard rock that is readily accessable to fans of the band. The rest of the album, though, is what will make you love or hate it. Like the previous album, the band attempts to broaden its horizons. The results are solid, no questions asked, but are different enough from past releases from the band that casual fans may be turned off by the shift in sounds. There really aren't any weakenesses on this album, but I won't deny that it's an aquired taste, and not one one you'll get into overnight. If you listen to this album with an open mind, chances are it will end up impressing you. No, this isn't one of Bad Company's best albums, but it is a solid release from the band nonetheless. Any big-time fan should buy it.

THE TEXT IN THIS PARAGRAPH REFERS EXCLUSIVELY TO THE REMASTERED VERSION OF THE ALBUM RELEASED IN 1994. In 1994, the record company remastered and rereleased Bad Company's albums. The remastering on these songs sounds great, certainly better than the original 1990 CD issues. However, in a lot of ways, these reissues were a wasted opportunity. For example, there was an assortment of rare tracks from this era that would have made fine bonus tracks (many of these later surfaced on the band's hits compilation, The Original Bad Company Anthology.) Likewise, in some cases, the band could have fit multiple albums onto a single disc. For example, the band's self-titled debut and this album, Straight Shooter, will fit on a single disc. Doing things like these would have made this remasters series a better value to the consumers, but I guess record companies are more concerned with profits. Oh, well. That doesn't change the way I feel about the album itself.

Should you buy Burnin' Sky? If you're a Bad Company fan, by all means add this one to your collection. If you're just getting into the band, or you just consider yourself a casual fan, stick with their first two albums or a hits compilation (preferably the Anthology and not the subpar 10 from 6, which overlooks the Burnin' Sky album completely.) Burnin' Sky IS a good album, but it's no place to start if you're new to the band - that's what the debut is for.

5 out of 5 stars Lee Rocker's "The Best of".......2007-05-09

Love this CD! I've seen Lee Rocker and his band in person a few times in the LA area. After hearing them, I knew I had to purchase one of his CD's. I also purchased one for a friend who heard mine and liked his music so much, they wanted one too. It is great "feel-good" Rock-a-Billy music. I highly recommend this CD. You can't go wrong.

Just when it seems that the purr has left Etta James's estimable voice, about halfway through this live concert recorded in 2001 at L.A.'s House of Blues she begins her eternally romantic ballad "At Last," and the years tumble away. James's singing becomes flexible as a tenor saxophone, building to a lovely, serpentine diminuendo, which she caps with an arching phrase that dissipates in a misty exhalation of breath. It's such a beautiful, brilliantly executed performance that it's suddenly clear that for most of this show, the 64-year-old diva played dirty on purpose. So her signatures, "Tell Mama" and "I'd Rather Go Blind" (really, just about everything), are raw and earthy, moan-and-groan R&B milked for every smile and tear. Raunchy, too, since James deploys plenty of her bawdy stage patter and picks numbers like the striptease fantasy "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and the even more obvious "I Just Want to Make Love to You." Her impetuous nature leads her into unpredictable improvisations, like the weird bird calls she warbles during the intro to the ghetto-rocker "All the Way Down," with it's wah-wah guitar and "Theme from Shaft" vibe. And her Roots Band are perfect accompanists. James's sons Donto and Sametto are the rhythm section, and the five horns and two guitarists play with the loose precision of the classic Stax or Muscle Shoals studio crews. Since James has made few live albums, she might have included more of her own gems in this set. But James has the command to transform numbers like Kiki Dee's "Sugar on the Floor" into soulful diamonds. --Ted Drozdowski

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars Very good Live Etta James.......2007-05-19

She does what she says on this CD- burn down the house. You would never know this is a woman in her sixties here. Her vocals are strong and they are front and center and she's got good backup here. Fans of Etta James will love this and it will earn her many new fans if they are exposed to this.

4 out of 5 stars Burn, Etta, Burn.......2006-06-27

Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.

In my youth I gave Etta James' music short shrift because, to be honest, I did not like the so-called 'bubble gum' music genre that I believed she represented. In retrospect I do not think I was wrong to reject her early offerings, having replayed her early work recently. What got me interested in Etta was hearing her do The Jealous Kind and I'd Rather Be Blind at the Newport Folk Festival years ago. These songs reflect a more bluesy, gospelly tradition that my tastes can appreciate. The selections here are exactly in that same vain, especially Tell Mama and Sugar on the Floor. These are tastefully done and reflect both her powerful voice and range of interests. You may not like all the selections but there are more than enough to keep you interested. Rock on.

5 out of 5 stars Too many are missing out on GREATNESS.......2005-07-23

Etta James style has evolved greatly over the decades-----it is merely a matter of personal preference as to which period of her career is her best-----i love her recent work equally as much as her earliest work--she is an artist who continually grows, stretches,& shares her immense talents & life experience w/ her audience. In her most recent years her style has expanded towards jazz---(although she mixes many styles now)--& this recorded live performance is STUNNING!!!!!This performance leans heavily towards "jazzy blues"--I reccomend it highly,JUST BEAUTIFUL. It is as real as it gets---i love this cd,TY ETTA,from the bottom of my heart!

5 out of 5 stars Tasty Set!.......2004-06-23

Some of the other reviews attack this on the basis that it is not as soulful as the 60's and 70's sets that we all know and love. Sure this is not 1962, but the band is on and it is a powerful well produced saucy set. The fact that she can put it out this strong after all of these years is a testament to her artistry. It is a nice blues rock sound and it never dissapointed anyone that has heard it with me. I understand the argument for purity but in this world everything evolves and this one gets a well deserved spot on my shelf next to the classics.

2 out of 5 stars Average at best.......2003-10-27

She spends as much time talking the lyrics as she does actually singing on this live CD. If your looking for Etta at her best live then buy her CD "Rocks the House".

5 out of 5 stars The Diva.......2006-08-04

This remains the best Patti album to date, though 2004's Timeless Journey was phenomenal.

Burnin' is full of great music.

I Hear Your Voice has to be the most amazing "slow burn" song I have ever heard. Written by Prince and whipped up by Miss Patti, this is one of her greatest of all time.

When You've Been Blessed (Feels Like Heaven) is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Crazy Love, Saving My Love For You, and Somebody Love You Baby are great slow jams.

On We're Not Making Love anymore, Patti finally found someone other than Michael McDonanld who could stand next to her in the studio and not be blown away. And it's Michael Bolton.

This whole CD is infused with Patti's emotions and some great jams. But this one before any of the compilation albums.

Peace easy.

5 out of 5 stars Patti's Burnin Tour De Force!.......2005-09-03

By now you will notice that for each artist that I have reviewed more than a couple of times, I have called one of their albums a Tour de Force.

For me, Burnin is Patti's Tour De Force, and I consider it to be her most consistent studio album. Patti's live shows are so over the top, and eventful that her studio albums can suffer as being a letdown, Burnin lives up to it's name.

This album mixes funk/disco/dance (Feels Like Another One, Release Yourself), Gospel (When You've Been Blessed), and R & B power ballads that burn with fury (Burnin, Somebody Loves You, Crazy Love). As an added attraction she teams up with her friend, Gladys Knight for the duet ironiclly titled, I Don't Do Duets.

Patti released a live album shortly after Burnin was released, and it features SOME of the Burnin tracks done live, but Burnin is a studio work by Patti that should be savored as orignally recorded.

5 out of 5 stars Patti DOES do duets.......2004-02-14

With Greatest Hits CDs out there, people often overlook previous albums like this one. "Burnin" includes "I Don't Do Duets", a duet with Gladys Knight that is unavailable on the Greatest Hits compilations. "I Don't Do Duets" shouldn't be missed, and for that I say this CD is worth buying.

Another song not to be missed is "When You've Been Blessed", a feel- good, gospel influenced track. There are also the radio hits like "Somebody Loves You" and "Feels Like Another One", which were popular. They showcase Patti's vocal talent, even if musically they aren't best Patty has to offer.

5 out of 5 stars Patti burns it down!!.......2003-02-26

This album can be added to the many successes that Ms. LaBelle has achieved throughout her exceptional career. Burnin' has soothing, and alluring ballads. It also has a foot-stompin' get yo shake-down track with "Feels Like Another One". This album is definitely worth your dollars.

2 out of 5 stars 'Doesn't quite "catch fire" as the title suggests.......2003-01-04

Patti's 1991 album is more like an ember than it is a full blazing inferno. Luther Vandross, Gladys Knight, Sarah Dash, Nona Hendrix, and Michael Bolton might be on hand, but even their support can't help an otherwise mundane recording. Too many of the songs sound like other things that Patti has done. Even "Release Yourself" sounds like a rip-off of Aretha's "Rock Steady" without any of that song's saving graces.

Only the opening track "Feels Like Another One" has any "oomph".

I wish that she had had another one on this album.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lee Rocker slaps that bass like it did something wrong..........2006-10-10

Pretty sweet release here by the great rockabilly bassist Lee Rocker. It's a compilation album and would be a great way to get to know his music or rockabilly/roots music in general. A few tracks worth mentioning are the Elvis covers, he does them with taste. Check out the medley w/ That's Alright Mama/Blue Moon of Kentucky. Shame, Shame, Shame features Scotty Moore (Elvis's guitarist during his Sun years) on guitar, his tone resonates and gives it a great feel. Also be sure to check out the bonus multimedia features. Oh yeah, Memphis Freeze is worthy of praise too.
