A CD is always more compelling when you know it's lifted from the artist's autobiography, and that's certainly the case with Confession, Usher's first record since 2001's 8701. The Atlanta singer's string of hits over the past decade have been decidedly PG-13 rated, almost veering towards teen pop, but he's changed all that on this co-produced offering, which he claims is "the real him." It would be too simplistic to just brand this record a break-up record, chronicling his public split with TLC's Rozonda "Chili" Thomas; it is that, but so much more. It would be more accurate to call this Usher's coming of age record, bridging the gap from boy to man, as he navigates the emotional fallout from the disintegration of his relationship, and the events that led up to it--real or imagined. But other than a guilty conscience, it seems unclear why Usher feels compelled to disgorge his secret life, as he documents his infidelities, transgressions, and emotional perfidy in the album's prodigious twenty one songs, that range from insinuating sultry R&B grooves to the decidedly crunky "Yeah," which pairs an insistent keyboard romp with Lil' Jon's assertive beats, and Ludacris' rather humid rhymes. --Jaan Uhelszki

the best Usher hands down.......2007-01-25
I never was a crazy Usher fan. Even the first single "Yea" wasnt what made me run out and buy the cd. It was once i heard "Burn" i thought let me give "Urrsher" a chance. This cd by far is the best yet. From start to finish. I dont even have a favorite song on it because there all good.
Confessions.......2007-01-09
Confessions from Usher is his best work yet. It give you the slow and the fast tempo that a music lover like me needs to hear.
I'm a 41 year old Usher lover.

Classic CD from R&B superstar.......2006-12-14
With Confessions Usher makes it known that he's the king of R&B and he's not going anywhere. At a first listen Confessions really didn't impress me but after seeing Usher on The Truth Tour back in the summer of 2004 I went back and gave the CD another listen I must I was presently surprised at how much I liked it. As always I'll do a track by track break down
1. Intro - Speaks for itself
2. Yeah ! - What Can I say no matter what this is always going to a club song even though I prefer the ATL remix.
3. Throwback - I never really cared for this song and Just Blaze gives us a horrible beat.
4. Confessions Part 1 - I first heard this one the import version of Confessions and I thought it was better than the sequel. Originally JD & Usher had planned to make the song ten minutes.
5. Confessions Part 2 - Nice Up-tempo although I prefer Part 1 because the beat is slower
6. Burn - The second single released back in 2004, it had to grow on me as Usher was singing poppy and not soulful.
7. Caught Up - One of the songs I gave a second listen to I really like this one
8. Superstar Interlude - Nice little intro leading up to one of the ballads on the CD.
9. Superstar - One of my favorite songs on the CD and a mix tape favorite.
10. Truth Hurts - Catchy song
11. Simple Things - Another Jam & Lewis wonder. Usher really needs to work with them so more of his next CD.
12. Bad Girl - After the concert this song kind of grew on me
13. That's What's It Made For - A bangin slow track that always works for me
14. Can U Handle It - Usher's bedroom track and my favorite song on the CD
15. Do It To Me - Usher's tries to give a tribute to Prince and doesn't fail completely.
16. Take Ya Hand - A popish song but not a bad listen it also grew on me.
17. Follow Me - The final Jam & Lewis track I really started to like this song and the beat by Dre & Vidal is some of their best work.
18. My Boo - I hated this song and I think that Alicia was the wrong choice to duet with
19. Red Light - Usher & Lil Jon reunite for another club banger.
20. Seduction - My second favorite song from the CD, Jam & Lewis always work wonders with this quiet storm slow jam.
21. Confessions Part II remix, with Shyne/Twista/Kanye West- It's all right nothing special.
Rare B-Sides
Usher recorded up to eighty songs and some of them have appeared on various mix tapes and soundtracks.
1. Doin The Most - A lovely ballad produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis that is reminds the listener of Ralph Tresvant's Sensitivity. This is one of the songs Usher should have kept on the CD as it's very soulful.
2. DOT COM - A very sexual song written and produced by Robin Thicke. This is another song that would fit perfect with the other sexual songs on the CD.
3. It Is What It Is - A kind of mid-tempo JD produced ditty, nothing to special and I'm glad they cut it.
4. Whatever I Want - Rich Harrison produced this one with it's blaring horns and catchy beat.
5. Ride - Another track co-written and produced by Rich Harrison, the song was later turned into Get Right for J-Lo.
6. Wifey feat. Pharell - A hot mid-tempo song in the vein of Excuse Me Miss by Jay-Z produced by The Neptune's.
7. Sweet Lies - Another Neptune's Gem that was supposed to appear on The Neptune's Clones Album.
A great album by a great artist.......2006-12-04
I think Confessions is a great album. Usher is such a good singer and he lives up to that with Confessions. I read alot of the negative reviews and it seems to me that the majority are criticizing Usher himself instead of reviewing this album. Just because the content is different from 8701 doesn't make it bad. This album would not be a waste of money. I recommend it:)

If You Haven't Got This Yet...GET IT!.......2006-11-18
Considering the fact that "Confessions", the follow-up to 2001's dissatisfying multi-platinum album "8701", has already gone multi-platinum and scored a load of smash hit singles, I shouldn't even be bothering to write a review about this album. However, I choose to do so because this album is the reason I got hooked onto R&B in the first place.
With the help of Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Lil' Jon, Rich Harrison, Bryan Michael Cox and a bunch of others on the production board, as well as a few guest spots (Jadakiss, Ludacris, etc.), Usher has crafted his best album to date, mainly mixing sensual slow jams with smooth mid-tempo grooves and catchy upbeat numbers. Without a doubt, "Yeah", the Crunk'n'B club-banging classic featuring Lil' Jon's Crunk production and Ludacris' witty 16 bars, is one of the best tracks on the album, but this album is a lot more personal and honest (and self-indulgent) than such a track might suggest.
The best example of the aforementioned fact would be "Confessions Part II", where Usher regretfully confesses to his leading lady about his infidelities and unintentionally impregnating another woman over Jermaine Dupri's piano keys and catchy guitar string loop. Although Jermaine Dupri provides less appealing production on the preceding "Confessions", Usher's emotional vocal delivery and honest lyrics are just as profound; ditto for the Jam & Lewis-produced "Simple Things", an amazing ballad which boasts a killer chorus and downright-brilliant lyrics about giving a girl less materialistic offerings and more emotional attention. On the soulful, smooth "Truth Hurts", Usher sends his paranoid ode to his woman about her infidelities, right before adding a twist to the end in the lyrics and admitting that his "guilty conscience is the real reason [he] wrote this song".
Even when the songs take a more universal turn on the album's other songs, the results are still amazing. On second single "Burn", Usher's voice remains emotional, smooth and soulful while he sings about letting go of a bad relationship over Jermaine Dupri's solid groove. Just Blaze's electric guitars (or wah-wah...can't tell) and rapper/songwriter/Usher's protégé Rico Love's progressively brilliant lyrics fuel Usher's emotional hurt on album highlight "Throwback", and the guitar-driven slow jam "Superstar" is the type of song that'll simultaneously pseudo-seduce female Usher fans and cause male listeners into rolling their eyes in mildly jealous boredom. "My Boo", a soulful duet ballad with R&B/Soul extraordinaire Alicia Keys, is definitely the best track on the album - the type of song that resonates with listeners of all ages and takes you back to the good puppy-love times of one's youth.
Apart from the album's lack of up-tempo material ("Caught Up", "Follow Me" and "Red Light -another Lil-Jon-produced club concoction- is as close as you'll get), this album does have some flaws, which (ironically) come around when he gets sexual. "Can U Handle It" falters with its dull production, weak lyrics and Usher's disappointing vocal performance.
"That's What It's Made For", with its heavily hypnotic guitar/flute groove, is perfect listening when you're "in the mood" (for lack of a less sleazy or explicit phrase), but some people might be displeased with a few things - the lyrics, the fact that it's a sex song, Usher's sense of egotism and the fake orgasms and surrendering come-ons of an infatuated/sexed-up/possibly drunk or stoned female. "Seduction", as predictable as its title suggests, works just fine with usher's melodically smooth vocals and Jam & Lewis' smooth production. What's most surprising about the track is Usher's unexpected rap towards the end, which isn't too bad, despite the fact that the lyrics are (once again) sexual. Nonetheless, I consider that song an actual highlight.
Altogether, a great album, Usher's best to date, GO BUY IT! 5 STARS!
Yes, I know I mentioned that there was some filler, which should mean Usher should not get his full marks. However, this is the album that turned me to R&B in all its forms - Pop, Soul, Rock, etc. Not only that, but the few weak tracks this CD are easily compensated for with all the other tracks, which usually range from great to stellar. Therefore, I refuse to give my favourite album less recognition than it deserves.

On his third studio effort (and fourth overall), 22-year-old R&B/pop star Usher Raymond makes the not-so-simple transition from post-teen heartthrob to love man. He does it with solid songs and a generous helping of charisma and vocal acumen, making this much-delayed collection a hot summer treat. Usher is aided in his musical efforts by renowned hit-makers like the Neptunes, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who deliver soaring ballads like "Can U Help Me"), Jermaine Dupri, and new jack Edmund Clement who penned the irresistible single "U Remind Me." With catchy tracks and emotive vocals, Usher revs up his sex quotient and unleashes a winning blend of street-honed jams and passionate love songs. --Amy Linden
Customer Reviews:
One of the best R&B CD'S released in 2001.......2006-12-14
Usher went from teen idol to full fledged R&B lover with his 8701 CD. The CD which featured production from The Neptunes, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and JD still gets contasnt play from me. The Neptunes produced a lot of the up-tempo numbers on the CD including I Don't Know & U Don't Have To Call while Jam & Lewis handled the smooth ballads How Do I Say and Can U Help Me which is still one of Usher's strongest vocals ever. If you can find the imported version check out the beatuiful ballad Seperated written by Daron Jones from 112.
"8701" = Good / "Confessions" = Better.......2006-10-06
Alright, my last review wasn't really that honest. Don't get me wrong...I've always respected Usher as a singer since the release of this album's single "U Remind Me", an infectious R&B/Pop gem with a simplistic beat which Usher's smooth, soulful vocals can easily groove over. Unfortunately, much of this album fails to deliver on Usher's full potential.
If this album were released in 2001, I'd be all over this album, ranting about Usher's immense talent and how he has everything an entertainer needs -strong voice, sex appeal amongst the ladies, "gangsta"-like attitude amongst the fellas- to pull off everything from banging party-starters to smooth ballads to sexy slow jams to achieving a long-time career. However, the year is 2006...my musical tastes have grown with my age, he has released a multi-platinum record ("Confessions" in 2004), multiple producers have raised the bar with one hot beat after another, his competition has grown enormously larger & Christina Milian's 2006 album "So Amazin'" still doesn't sound worn out after months of constant repetition of its addictive jams. With all of this in mind, it is with great displeasure that I deem Usher's multi-platinum "8701" a disappointment.
The album's main flaw lies in its production. Whether it's Jermaine Dupri's unsuitable mix of ranting and heavy guitar riffs on the emotionless "Can't Let U Go" or Diddy's combination of weak guest verses and stale assortments of bass and weak synthesizers on "I Don't Know", too much of the production sounds dated by today's standards. Lyrically, this album's isn't too startling either. While songs like the emotional guitar ballad "U Got It Bad" are enriched with classic lyrics about broken-heartedness and endlessly haunting reminiscence of a past relationship & soulful vocals from one of R&B's ultimate entertainers, there are also songs like "If I Want To" that epitomize Usher's uncharming egocentricity.
Speaking of egocentricity (which, byt the way, is emphasized by the album's cover art), Usher has a serious sex fetish. Unlike almost every Hip-Hop artist, Usher has the voice and the believability to successfully make sensuous slow jams like "Twork It Out" work brilliantly. Unfortunately, there are also songs like the Latin-tinged "How Do I Say", which finds a seemingly thoughtless Usher spellbound and caught up in another woman's beauty, right before progressing through a story more predictable than the sub-standard Hollywood Blockbuster and eventually achieving a one-night stand. Despite being pleasant on the ears, I seriously question whether or not Usher really listens to what he's saying.
Then there's "Good Ol' Ghetto", which really has nothing to do with the ghetto. Instead, it's a song about re-visiting an ex-girlfriend from your youth, but denying her desires for him because he's in love with someone else. As relatable as it is, does it really have anything to do with the ghetto? Essentially, no...it's just another opportunity for Usher to flaunt his sex appeal around moronic female teenyboppers and grown women dumb enough to believe Usher would ever make love to them so casually. Then again, the ghetto is a part of Hip-Hop culture, and seeing the fact that Hip-Hop's becoming increasingly generic due to the male's addiction with sex and misogyny, maybe it does have some relevance (if only a little).
If you can put aside the stale beats, inconsistent lyrics, lack of thought and Usher's sex fetish fetish, there are songs like the infectious "U Don't Have To Call" & "U-Turn", the latter on celebrating party life, reminiscing on good ol' times and introducing a new dance-term/catchphrase ALL at the same time! If you can get past one of the most unoriginal beats of all time, "Pop Ya Collar" with provide some lyrical gold about being yourself and ignoring the haters. It's a good effort overall, but a major disappointment from one of R&B's biggest stars. 3 stars!

I have always liked Usher but it had to take awhile for me to like this CD. At first I wasn't feeling it but after I kept playing it, it actually grew on me. This isn't your typical R&B album. It seems more of a party/have a good time CD. And you can do just that especially with songs such as "I Don't Know", "If I Want to", "I Can't Let U Go", and "U-Turn". Of course they have the signature songs that Usher is known for-(U Remind Me, U Got it Bad, and U Don't Have to Call). U Got it Bad is one of my favorites. That's a song anybody can relate to and the lyrics are awesome. I also liked:
Twork it Out 4/5- a very nice song
Can U Help Me 4/5 - a very nice slow song done by Usher
How Do I Say 4/5 - this song is sensual and on the romantic side, it can definately put you in the mood
Good Ol' Ghetto 5/5 - it's the beat that I really liked than the lyrics
It's no doubt that Usher puts out the HITS. You can listen and have a good time with this CD. This particular album is one of his best besides "Confessions. So if you don't own this one, get it. It might not have that typical R&B sound but it is still enjoyable.
It Doesn't Have Soul........2006-04-06
I bought Usher's 8701 on tape long ago, and I remember liking it. Then a couple of years ago, I bought it again on cd, listened to it, and wondered why I wasted my money.
Maybe it's the fact that I've grown, but this album sounds so un-soulful now. It is just lacking any spirit, sort of like an over-produced record: all studio magic, but no magic from the singer. Even the songs that are SUPPOSED to sound heartfelt, don't. The album sounds dated, not transcendent of time and era like all the albums that become classics. The songs are very forgettable, and I don't see any of them being seen as classics twenty years from now.
Usher has yet to make a masterpiece.
Addendum: I was a little unfair in my rating. The album deserves 3 stars, not 2. Unfortunately, I can't change it.
Show your love for Usher!.......2006-01-20
Besides Justin Timberlake, I can't think of a better singer than Usher. He sings, dances, and produces: all admirably! Get this CD, and find out what you've been missing.

Sophmore Album From R&B superstar.......2006-12-14
I initially thought Usher would be another causality in the game of R&B but he came back onto the scene hard with his My Way CD. The lead single U Make Me Wanna didn't really impress me much but his follow up Nice & Slow is the song where I finally gave Mr. Raymond his props. Usher is the strongest at ballads which is ever evident on this CD with Nice & Slow, Bedtime, his cover of Slow Jam and the timely I Will. My Way is the album that pushed Usher to the forefront it severs as his maturity album the same way Don't Be Cruel did for Bobby Brown.
Usher's Way!.......2006-11-28
Usher was only 15 when his debut album came out in 1994, while it wasn't a bad album it wasn't too good either and didn't yield any hit singles. On "My Way" from 1997 Usher Raymond grew from boy to man and his sophmore album had three big hits also. Good producers like Babyface and Jermaine Dupri gives this album a good weight between slow jamz and uptempo's. "You Make Me Wanna" a big hit and this album's best song also showed signs of Usher's fantastic dance moves and soulish voice while "Nice & Slow" really is a good bedroom song. "My Way", not to be mistaken for the Sinatra song is a strong beatoriented midtempo and this album's third hit. "Slow Jam" is a duet with Monica and cover of a Midnight Star song. "Just Like Me" feautures a cameo from Lil Kim and "Come Back" is too thugish with rap. I could live without these two. "I Will" and Babyface penned "Bedtime" are both great slow jamz while Closer, "One Day You'll Be Mine" samples the Isley Brother's "Footsteps In The Dark", same sample as Ice Cube's "It Was a Good Day" but is more then welcomed nonetheless. This is the first Usher album to purchase and a good way to discover his breakthrough album and latter career moves. Unfortunately there are only 9 songs + one un-neccesary extended version of "You Make Me Wanna". A few more songs would surely improve the album, but it's defenitely worth the price.
Before the ego..........2006-05-20
Before the hype, before the public breakup with TLC vixon Chili, before Usher became better defined by his ego than his six-pack...there was 'My Way'. Now unless you've seen 'Usher: Behind the Music' you probably think this is his debut album, because until 'You Make me Wanna...' hit the air waves no one knew who this kid was, but once it did hit everyone was soon well versed in the school of Usher. From sick beats and classic old school vibe on tracks like the aforementioned, the title track and the dirty 'Just Like Me' featuring Lil' Kim, to slow jams for the more intimate of occasions like 'Bedtime' or my personal favorite 'Nice & Slow' Usher brings top game to this brilliant album. Only 9 tracks long, 10 if you count the extended version of 'You Make me Wanna...' (which isn't that much different than the original) Usher doesn't leave room for filler, and that's good because every track here is really good. So yes, Usher was and still is a great singer, but here we get a glimpse of 'pre-big-head' Usher, you know, the way we like him.
Usher's My Way.......2006-03-13
Hey its me again! I've reviewed all of Usher's albums. Let me review this one. This album is an excellent album and despite its from 1997 I still love listening to it! Once I put Usher in my stereo he pretty much stays in there. Now this cd deserves 5 stars because not only does it have hits on it but they're very good. U Make Me Wanna, Just Like Me, Bedtime, Nice&Slow and My Way are just some of my favorites. If you don't own this album please buy it!

But other than a guilty conscience, it seems unclear why Usher feels compelled to disgorge his secret life, as he documents his infidelities, transgressions, and emotional perfidy in the album's prodigious seventeen songs that range from insinuating sultry R&B grooves to the decidedly crunky "Yeah," which pairs an insistent keyboard romp with Lil' Jon's assertive beats and Ludacris' rather humid rhymes. This tracks shines all the more since it's the only club track, but you find yourself pining for more, since most of the other songs tend to get bogged down in his lush, feverish balladry. That's not a bad thing, but the disc would have been better served by a few more muscular tracks. --Jaan Uhelszki

First thing's first, i don't like Usher and I never did. I wouldn't dislike him so much if he wasn't played everywhere and hailed as a god by women everywhere.
However, I do believe that everyone has the freedom to listen to whatever they want. I'm sick of reading reviews saying that this is garbage and then telling people what they "should" listen to. It is obvious that those who listen to Usher have a certain taste in music and your petty little review isn't going to give them a revelation. An Usher fan isn't going to say, "Hmm I thought I loved Usher, but according to this unprofessional review, he sucks. Well I guess I suck. I better go listen to the Beetles or Jimi Hendrix and Metallica (thanks Kramer). These guys don't seem to be part of the genre of music I'm in to but as long as some guy says to listen to it, I'm sold".
Face it, every generation has its own popular music that is despised by its prior generation. Of course, I'm not saying that everyone from my generation likes this music (I've already established that I don't). Also, Usher is R&B, NOT RAP! And he has nothing to do with Eminem. Half of you negative reviewers saying he is rap just revealed how clueless you really are!
I find Usher's voice too high, its freakishly high and it digs up horrible memories of boy bands. Personally, I dislike every song on this album, but on the other hand I don't enjoy R&B. Everyone has different musical tastes. Girls love him and they are really the target audience because they think he's the hottest thing since jalapeno peppers (though I do not recommend basing your musical taste on how the artist looks). Usher is definitely for tweens and popular girls. If you want to give 'Confessions' a negative review, give it a negative review based on what you think of the album, don't diss the entire music industry of this decade based on one man.
If you agree that people have the right to choose what music they listen to, then vote yes. If you're one of those pricks who think that your music is the ONLY music, then vote no, it doesn't bother me, it just helps me to keep track.
Good Usher.......2006-07-11
My sister gave this to me for my birthday last year and i'm not unhappy that I was exposed to it. Before I got into rap music this was my absolute favourite and to this day I still am a big fan of it. My favourite song has to be Superstar but songs like Confessions, Confessions Part 2, Bad Girl, Yeah!, Simple Things etc are great. Well like I said before now i'm mainly a rap fan but I can't bag this guy for singing in his songs.
If you like R & B than this is a good album for your collection.
his best CD so far.......2006-04-20
Usher has always been my favorite R&B artist because I really believe he produces quality music. Songs such as "U Got It Bad", "My Way", and "U Make Me Wanna" really got me to like his music. I have never owned any of his CDs. So when "Confessions" came out I decided to purchase it. This CD is pretty good. Mostly all the songs have nice beats. When I heard "Burn" on the radio thats when I decided to buy this CD because it sounded really nice. I think the best songs on the album were:
Yeah - clubbanger, real nice beat
Confessions - liked the small interlude that precedes it, nice beat
Burn - real nice slow song
Caught Up - has a nice beat to it
Bad Girl - the beat was off the hook, really nice
Take Your Hand - reminds you a lot of Michael Jackson
Follow Me- this one had a real nice beat
Overall this was a good effort by Usher. Almost all the songs are worth listening to. He has talent but I really don't think he's a great singer. But the way he produces his songs make up for it. Wonder if he'll make another album, but anyways it was a good effort.
I LOVE THIS CD.......2006-03-04
Usher has a good voice, I listened to every song on this album, and enjoyed 100% of them. My favorite track on Usher's Confessions album is "Yeah". When I bought it I couldn't stop hearin' it.I Just fall in love with this CD.I love it all the time.
Nice One Usher!.......2006-02-20
This album is truly the marketer for Usher. I can honestly say that I listened to every song on this album, and enjoyed 98% of them (and this coming from a person who is not an R&B fan). A lot of people may "knock" Usher for his lack of originality in dancing, however the brother has to make a living ya'll. I enjoyed the fact that Usher had variation on this album. It wasn't your typical "bump and grind" track burner. He brought in an array of styles and flavor. Hell, it should be labeled as a classic. Excellent!

In The Mix - smooth R'nB.......2006-11-06
This is not a must have CD in a R'nB collection, but it is a nice CD, even though it is not outstanding....
But if you are a true Usher fan it is surley a must have :-)
Good Party Sound Track.......2006-07-05
Pretty good sound track I love the song Against The World- Robin Thicke it's a really good slow jam. All together the soundtrack is pretty good it's worth a shot

but rico love is not good i dont like him that much except sweat.
my favo.tracks are be what its gonna be and get acquainted those are good.although the soundtrack is great on which record lable keri hilson appears ?
Really Good!!!!.......2005-12-07
You should buy this album, All the songs are reallyyy good!!!:) And we discover lots fabulous artists, and James Lackey (Usher's brother) produced a lot of songs in this album and he is really good!!!!
Pretty Decent Soundtrack.......2005-12-05
In The Mix is the soundtrack to current R&B superstar Usher's first big film. Although the movie recently floped the soundtrack isn't half bad. Rico Love (Usher's rapper) shines on three tracks and his R&B group One Chance are pretty decent. One Chance really impressed me when I heard them sing Can You Stand The Rain acapllea on BET'S 106 & Park. Other impressive tracks include the mid tempo slow jams Get Acquainted by Ryon Lovett and Against The World by Robin Thicke, I look forward to hearing both of their CD'S in the near future. All in all I would say give the soundtrack a listen or at least get a burnt copy.

Can't wait for the next album, they just keep getting better!
Brilliant.......2007-06-03
Dave never fails to amazes me w/ his haunting lyrics of love, faith, drugs, life it just makes you think.
It seems w/ each CD he just outdoes himself. I can't understand why Dave hasn't broke through in the US. I'm just glad he's producing more CDs. Some great tracks are 'Brilliant', 'Ugly Is Beautiful', 'White Flag'.
Reminds a bit from his Morning Orbit and Hallucinations CDs.
Awesome!.......2007-05-14
The CD I bought was in perfect condition, just like it said it would be. I would buy from this person again 100%. Awesome!!!!
Like These Roses.......2007-05-06
David Usher's new solo CD, the fifth in my collection, continues his excellent musical output. "The Music" is a driving rock tune with a wistful reflective quality in the melody. Usher's amazingly original lyrical thrust continues, "I go out every night & hide myself among the lights, bathe in all the pretty things the city brings; The bodies glisten & they shine; Like the stars, we're born to die & like these roses, we all will fade." "Spotlight On" is another delightful track with the acoustic guitars chiming enchantingly, "Drift away, dawn is breaking; All the people live for coffee, read about the day's disasters; Hustlers & the queens are singing." Usher builds the tension in the track until it bursts into a gorgeous chorus, "Still we are invincible." This track ranks with the best of Usher's work. "Life of Bees" is another amazing track with Usher's trademark melodic build, "The wings they uncurl like the strangest of birds; We're all breaking down again." After his output with Moist and on his fifth CD, his melodic sense begins to feel comfortably recognizable. His work is so amazingly complex and unique that he is an artist whose releases I continue to seek. He is, unfortunately, a well kept secret Stateside. Bravo!
Thought-Provoking, Allegorical Lyrics.......2007-05-05
David Usher has never been a particularly fantastic musician. His guitar skills are quite passable, mind you, but on this, the Canadian musician's fifth solo outing, one can hear Usher's musical ideas starting to repeat themselves. Since the release of Hallucinations, Mr. Usher's third album as a solo artist, he seems to have settled on two particular formulas for songs; intricate yet repetitive acoustic numbers, and mainstream pop with lush semi-electronic arrangements.
This is not to say that Strange Birds is a bad album. Far from it, in fact. The music, criticisms noted above, just doesn't take priority here. What does take priority is, in fact, David Usher's finest skill; lyrics.
Strange Birds continues David Usher's tradition of writing thought-provoking, allegorical lyrics that make you think instead of making you cringe. While thematically, this album isn't much of a departure from his previous efforts (focusing on drug use, city life, questions about faith and God, pessimism versus optimism, and the gray areas in between), Usher still writes strongly and meaningfully on the topics he does cover.
While certainly not this artist's finest hour, Strange Birds is certainly a showcase of David Usher's lyrical prowess. The music, on the other hand, is nice but largely disposable. Then again, maybe that puts some deserved focus on the words, which are infinitely more thought-provoking. David Usher is an artist with something to say; and that is a refreshing change from most of the tripe that Canadians hear on the radio.

Still His Most Soulful Album.......2006-12-14
Usher first burst onto the scene with the song Call Me A Mack from the Poetic Justice soundtrack and his debut solo appeared a year later. Usher was singing with so much soul on this CD,it was kind of a shock when he went pop on his later work. The CD featured the up-tempo hit Think Of You written by Donell Jones and the lead single I'll Make It Right which sampled Audio Two's Top Billin was very catchy and had a new jack feel to it. Usher's strongest work here is the ballads though. He enlisted Devante to produce Can U Get Wit It and Al B. Sure handed Usher one of his songs ever in the form of The Many Ways. Another very strong ballad is Whispers. Usher may not ever return to the soulfulness found on this CD as music has changed but for some classic soul check out this CD.
Usher's first album was truly a sign of things to come.......2006-03-19
This is one of my favorite Usher albums. Usher projects a soulful voice that marks an artist well beyond his years. This effort is proof of things to come... for anyone who can remember his "Think of You" video, he was already dancing his butt off, and for those who know "Can You Get Wit it" and " The Many Ways" the path of R&B crooner was laid. This album has great uptempos, but boasts more mid tempos and slow jams than his recent works. Though it lacked the commercial quality of his following albums, USHER is an easy listen and a must have for true Usher fans.
Usher-Usher.......2006-03-13
For this being Usher's first album and only being 15 years old this is an impressive debut album. This is another good cd. All of Usher's cd are awesome. A few of my favorites are Can U Get Wit It, Think Of You, and Final Goodbye. Please pick this cd up along with his others!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The German countertenor Andreas Scholl takes risks on his latest CD, Wayfaring Stranger, and not all of them pay off. It is a recording of 17 English-language folksongs, some of them very well known, such as "Down by the Salley Gardens" and "My love is like a red, red rose." This is not usually a repertory tackled by classically trained singers, who can sound prissy, but Scholl's clear, plaintive alto, with its rich low notes and gentle top range, is a quite plausible vehicle. "Wild Mountain Thyme" evokes real sadness, while "Barbara Allen" aches with unhappy love. A surprise awaits in the ballad "Henry Martin," as Scholl uses his rough, nondescript baritone to identify the hero. It is rather a jolt. At least, it is good to know his voice has actually broken. In this song, too-feminine endings in the lyric fall clumsily on stressed beats. Scholl does nothing to counter the infelicity; English, of course, is not his mother tongue. In the beautiful title track, which opens the disc, he sings endearingly of a "why-farring straincher." The accompaniments for various combinations of chamber orchestra, lute, dulcimer, and harp tend to be slushy, sentimental, and over-fussy. The bass uncomfortably parallels the tune in "Salley Gardens" and would have won a big red line through it in old-fashioned harmony classes. Still, on the whole, this is a worthwhile disc. Scholl clearly loves the songs he sings with great tenderness, and he deserves credit for his courage even where the experiment fails. --Rick Jones
Customer Reviews:
Beauty.......2006-05-12
This is one of the most beautiful CDs I know: so pure in tone, so haunting in its harmonies. The reservations of some other listeners seem to make this quality a sort of fault, and perhaps it is if you like your ballads gritty; but I find the selections, the arrangements, and Scholl's singing so ravishing that I felt I had to write this review just to urge everyone to try it. Listen to "I Will Give My Love ..." You might feel your heart stop.
Wonderful. .......2006-03-14
This is the perfect CD to listen to one a cold winter's afternoon with a warm cup of tea and a good book. Scholl's voice is so pure and smoothing. The orchestral arrangements are very creative and lush - sort of an English version of Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne. The one down note I would have is eventhough Scholl's voice is very expressive his phrasing can be a little square. I would have liked him to take a bit more liberties with the sentences. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra musical fluidity more than makes up for any of Scholl's rigidity however.
A recommended buy.
Wayfaring Stranger: Folksongs.......2005-10-26
This is a fantastic CD. The countertenor voice of Andreas Scholl gives an entirley new
meaning to traditional folk music. The orchestration is just enough to give a haunting sound to each selection. ' Wayfaring stranger' and 'Wild mountain thyme' are two selections that make the purchasing of the CD worth the pice.
Surprisingly good.......2005-03-05
At first I was suspicious due to the album's sleek marketing and desing. But right from the start I was delighted to hear the lush arrangements of these peculiar songs.
Granted, we do hear quite a lot of strings and even some sound effects that make the music sound dangerously "romantic", or worse, "exotic"...
And yes, the arrangements become very similar to those used by Sarah Brightman, Bocelli and other musical aberrations.... but Scholl's scholarly perfection of voice and delivery save the day. Not only that, but his (limited) potential to characterize the music is in full capacity... especially in the songs where he actually sings in his baritone in a self-contained duet.
Yes, the strings are too warm. And yes, there are parts that could even fit as background music for Disneyworld rides... And yes, it can at times sound cheap and "postcard-ish".........
But, truth be told, sometimes a Coke tastes better than Bordeaux, and sometimes a "Little Debbie" cake hits the spot better than the Sachertorte.
So, if you want to listen to songs that are warm and glowing -albeit effectist-, sung by a first class musician... this album will do the trick.
For those who are new to Scholl, I strongly reccomend his earlier CD's --namely those containing the Handel Arias, the English Lute Songs, and the German Baroque lieder.
As for "Wayfaring Stranger", play close attention to "My Love is a Red Red Rose"... If you've ever felt true love, this is the song to make you cry.
Brilliant.......2005-01-11
Putting this wonderful voice together with an easy-listening style of ochestration was simply a brilliant idea.
This compilation will surely bring this wondrous voice to the attention of a wholly different public to the one which presently adores Andreas, and secondly, it will introduce these folk treasures to an audience at present virtually ignorant of them.
Add this one to your Scholl collection

Satisfactory, though not great........2007-04-07
The previous reviewer complains about Williams' lack of expressiveness, though acknowledging the artist's accurate playing. Well, I kind of feel that way about Williams in general. His skill highlights accuracy, in my opinion. Where I like Williams most is on the couple of CD's on which he and Julian Bream play together. Never-the-less, the cd under review has its merits and I enjoy some its pieces.
My song-by-song review of the master guitarist John Williams.......2005-07-08
1. Sevilla (Sevillanas)
--This popular guitar piece is usually played slow and without a strong direct rhythm, such as Williams plays here. While Segovia was responsible for taking the quite mediocre flamenco song and making it more expressive as a classical guitar piece, Williams improved on all those extra notes Segovia put in, by restoring the original dance rhythym (sevilla means dance).
2. Prelude to the Fourth Lute Suite.
--This piece is extremely complex, full of notes and usually satisfies the average listener because it doesn't repeat phrases as much as the other songs in this set. Beginning classical guitarists will hear this and immediately go get the sheet music or tablature for it to start learning it. They are doomed too. The piece is far too advanced. Williams' version here is popular because of how utterly note-for-note flawless it is, in spite of being so complex and difficult that Segovia even said it was impossible to play on guitar!
3. Andante
--I think Amazon.com has mistitled this piece. It is the exact same song as "Sonata in D minor" on the regular CD. But anyway, again, Williams plays flawlessly a difficult piece, but this one is more mellow than the Prelude.
4. I. Allegro Giusto
5. II. Largo
6. III. Allegro
--I personally thought these three movements sounded slightly "rushed", especially the slower second movement "Largo".
7. Sakura Variations
--Williams plays this traditional popular Japanese song several times, each being a different style of the same tune. Nice way to keep things interesting.
8. Usher Waltz, Op.29 (After Edgar Allan Poe)
--This song appears to be nothing but "smart noise", as I like to say. It requires technical feats of skill, but it seems to just spin it's wheels, and would do little more than draw comical smiles if played at a restaurant or club for an audience.
9. Asturias (Leyenda)
--This is a popular piece that just says "spanish pride" all over it. Those who never heard it before would swear this is a soundtrack to a film about wars in old Mexico. While this version is tight, Williams recorded this song back in the 80's on an album called "Spanish Guitar Music", and this earlier version I feel has more power and gusto, while the version on this Seville Concert Album doesn't quite have that earliers gustoin spite of it's own praiseworthy traits.
10. Sueno En La Floresta
--I am a true dedicated fan of John Williams, and I don't like seeing people say he doesn't play with soul, etc. However, while this advanced virtuosic tremelo piece composed by Barrios is technically perfect, it sounds "rushed"; and those small pauses and breaks that give a piece "soul" are all but absent here. He should have slowed it down just a bit. Did Williams ever play this piece with soul? Yes. In 1978, found on his album "John Williams plays barrios".
11. Adagio
--Otherwise titled "Concerto de Arajaunez", guitar + symphony piece composed by Joquin Rodrigo, and intended to highlight the guitar, by giving it most of the limelight. This is very different from the orchestra concertos in songs 4, 5 and 6 on this same album. Williams gives the guitar true color and expression in each of the solo spots.
12. Torre Bermeja
--Some songs just have a very thick authentic "Mexican" sound to them more so than others, and this would be such one. It was Segovia who popularized the notion that no classical guitarist should play one song the same way all the time. I personally feel that the earlier version Williams recorded back in 1958 when he was 17, despite the lessor quality clarity in the recording, is much more expressive. That was when Williams was fresh out of Segovia school.
13. Granada
--A soft and moving Spanish piece, the one you'd want to have playing when your girlfriend walks in the door to eat the gourmet dinner with you under soft lights. This is the stuff I listen to when everybody is out of the house and I can just sit back with nothing but this album and a six-pack of beer and just *V E G* for a precious 3 minutes. Or I'll put the CD player on repeat and turn it into an hour.
14. Cadiz
--A rather lively swashbuckling piece that didn't do a damn thing for me personally. I am a classical guitarist, and this one will never be in my repetoire.
15. Cordoba
--A very expressive piece with a slow beautiful yet haunting beginning, evoking images of the Mosk in Spain. The main body of the song requires some of the most impossible guitar fingering, and yet Williams brings it out without buzzing strings or squeaks. In the video "The Seville Concert", Williams introduces this piece by saying that Cordoba is his personal favorite.
--
Overall, while the extra songs on this special edition CD are interesting, they are not sufficient to justify the extra price, and IMO it is only Cordoba which justifies the increased price. The average person, whether amatuer guitarist or not should be satisfied with what amounts to a culmination of Williams' unbelievably accurate playing. This album however will not satisfy guitar enthusiasts who prioritize feeling and soul more than technical perfection. He simply just doesn't "take his time" often enough for that crowd of listeners.
If I had produced this album, I would have shelved "Cadiz", and put William's latest recording of "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" on it instead; the famous tremelo piece by Tarrega which is the "most" Spanish sounding piece in all the guitar literature in guitarist majority opinion. Cadiz is simply awful. I never thought any noise could be worse than "Usher Waltz". Boy was i wrong!

Customer Reviews:
I could review this..........2005-06-23
...but I'd be wasting what watty420 already wrote. "Yeah" sucks, so does Flusher, er, I mean usher! (lol)
Major heart attack factor here........2005-04-26
Some of my friends tell me I listen to the wrong stuff, that I should move out of my whole "Another teen supporting classic rock" thing. Maybe that's true. But that doesn't keep Yeah! from being a bad song. And don't think the rest of this is good either.
When I first heard this song, I thought whatever. Kinda forgettable, kinda boring. But then it started turning up everywhere ya looked and that really P'ed my O, if you know what I mean. (If you don't, you should). Yeah! is so boring and just goes on and on and on and has major heart attack factor. On a scale of one to ten, I give it a 0.0000000000001. To all you Usher worshippers, wake up and try 60's rock, 70's rock, Parliament or James Brown. You'd like them a LOT more.
Man I love this song!.......2005-03-01
Ima can't do it no mo' Ima can't! I swear I swear. Hear this music and it's all like "yeah", then you think sexy thoughts that is what this song will make you do. It's basically sex... got it?
Yay Usher!.......2005-01-09
The unreleased tracks, "Red Light" & "Sweet Lies" are marvolous.
Even though Usher put "Red Light" on his special edition of "Confessions", "Sweet Lies" still remains an exclusive to the states.
Get this, it's a excellent buy!
great beat.......2005-01-01
This song has an excellent beat, with a lot of help from Usher. The music video has wonderful effects. However, the lyrics are bad. Someone shut Lil Jon up. And Ludacris.. he successfully shows how women get ZERO respect.. with the lyrics you actually can understand.
Usher is very talented. His voice is great and he can dance. But having Usher and a good beat won't make this song a huge hit. If you want a song to dance to, this is a great one. Otherwise, don't waste your time.
