Cameo - Greatest Hits

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Cameo started out playing a stiffer variation on Parliament's cartoon funk, but it took a relocation to Atlanta, a decade of cranking out albums that didn't go far beyond a dance-floor cult, and frontman Larry Blackmon's discovery of codpieces before they hit the mark with the inescapable "Word Up." Front-loaded with that massive hit, the 1985 radio favorite "Single Life," and the memorably sexy "Candy," Greatest Hits goes on to wander through their commercial high points--most of which include the band's signature The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly five-note synth whistle. A couple of later tracks are egregious "Word Up" knockoffs, but if you're curious about the brittle funk that made their name early on, this is a good place to start. --Douglas Wolk

4 out of 5 stars Class of 62 Rules!.......2007-05-14

Good compilation of Philly area hits of the rock era. It nicely filled a
gap in my oldies collection. Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker, Orlons,
and what a nice surprise: Charlie Gracie doing "Butterfly"! This is
a collection worth having, Only question I have, why did they take so long releasing it?

5 out of 5 stars It's about time! A treasure for early boomers!.......2006-12-01

I know Cameo/Parkway released a box set of all their hits earlier. But that cost at least $50 and featured many obscure recording that most folks never heard of unless you lived in Philly. This best of set captures the essence of those great Cameo/Parkway records that were never released on CD until now. For any kid who grew up during the late 50's and 60's, this CD is a treasure of all the great hits, Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker, The Orlons, Dee Dee Sharp, The Dovells, The Tymes (featuring one of the most beautiful pop records ever "So Much In Love",The Rays (Sillouettes),Charlie Gracie (Butterfly) "Dinner With Drac" etc. It takes me back to high school when these songs jumped out of your transistor or car radio. Most of these songs were recorded between 1957 and 1964 and they were all huge hits. I can't understand why they were never available until now. So kick back and relax and hear these hits for the first time in new improved sound. A must for early boomers!

4 out of 5 stars "D" Funkman.......2000-05-11

hey...if you are a true Cameo fan, which I am, then this was one that you need to have...every song on this cd was the one that "brought back them good memories" and when you use to hear them come on at parties or on the radio, you would turn it up...but hearing them "live" was the ultimate...with me being a drummer, you know i always loved those funky drums and syncopated rythms...booya....one of the funkest introduction beats i have heard gots to be the opening drum tracks on She's Strange, "nasty to the Bone"...and that straight driving beat on "shake your pants"...like i said, i crave funk like that and these cats today can't even come up with nothing close...all they want to do is remix the funk with some tired ass rap lines over the top...i say, get your own funk and leave Cameo's funk alone....cause you just ain't gonna get it!
