Soul music is alive and well on this artist's debut album. Loaded with emotive vocal demonstrations, the set kicks off with the explosively memorable ballad "Friend of Mine." From there the album levels off into mostly satisfying tracks, including "Soul of a Woman"--a lengthy ballad interlude that's not quite a complete song but nevertheless allows the Queens, New York, artist to glow through passionate verse. A contemporary R&B artist, to be sure, Price also demonstrates her ability to flow in more traditional veins with songs like "Take Me to a Dream." But her creative skills don't stop just with her fervent ability to soar, slip, and slide through her songs. She gets extra-credit points for her talents as a songwriter and producer--once for Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey, now for herself. --J.R. Reynolds

One listen to her debut makes clear that Price's poignant vocals rise above her peers'.

Just as Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On was about much more than the sex that it celebrated, so does Meshell Ndegeocello's putative love album Comfort Woman have more than seduction on its mind. Lust and romance frame the record's concerns, but as with Gaye's work, they're seen as a liberating force: "I wanna get free with you," sings Ndegeocello near the disc's beginning; she later quotes an anti-pie-in-the-sky verse from Bob Marley's "Get Up Stand Up" to hammer home the theme of salvation on Earth. Similarly, Comfort Woman is more musically ambitious than the bulk of recent neo-soul sets with which it shares an audience. A number of dubwise excursions and rock guitar solos ensure that a debt to the '70s is paid, but this is hardly a slavish Gaye/Curtis Mayfield tribute. Comfort Woman finds Ndegeocello in an inspired frame of mind and at a peak of invention. --Rickey Wright

quiet sensual music.......2007-07-11
I am loving this cd. It is very low key, quiet and very sensual. I love to listen to it when I am relaxing in the bath or getting a massage. It is very different than anything else I have ever heard, a complex mix of music and vocals. Overall it is a cd I turn to when I want to be comforted and get back in my body and my mind.
QUINTESSENTIALLY PHENOMENAL.......2007-05-20
Meshell N'Degeocello IS without question one of the sexiest, most progressive, creative minds in the music arena. When so much of the New Millennium's music dives to the leechy depths of misogyny, extreme materialism, cultural and political ignorance and an overall lack of the qualities that render music an artform, everything that this woman composes is GENIUS...creative expression at its very, very best - - - unbelievable production that fuses everything from jazz to reggae to the native rhythms of the Motherland and lyrics that demand that you take your mind to a deeper level.
Grows On You.......2007-05-01
Unique in a lot of ways.
Takes getting used to. Most of the tracks just kept getting skipped for a while, but surprisingly, they grow on you. If you are open to a wide variety and artiste's experimenting various style, go for it.
Good things come to those who Wait!!!!.......2007-03-08
It took me forever to get this CD but when I heard samples of it from her website I knew I had to have it and I wasn't disappointed. A must have!!!
..........2006-12-31
This is the first Meshell Ndegeocello album I have bought. (When I discover new artists, I usually start from the most present to the older stuff...) At first, I absolutely hated it and I put it away for quite awhile. I listened to it again... still nothing. Today, I gave it a final listen and absolutely loved it. You really have to be in a certain mood to appreciate this album. You have to be feeling very relaxed, yet still attentive. The project is short and sweet. The insturmentation and vocals are beautiful. If you don't like it at first, try again. I am so enthused that I am now going to buy all of her other albums. I highly recommend Comfort Woman.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

SOMETIMES LESS IS MORE !!!.......2006-10-07
Kelly has a very big voice but no idea how to use it to maximum advantage. If she'd sung half the notes she sings on this cd it would have been too many - after one listening I'm completely melismatized. People think Mariah Carey defines over-singing. Not any more. Welcome to the new undisputed world champion.
Soulful Woman.......2006-07-31
Kelly Price's debut album Soul Of A Woman surprised many as the industry's idea of a female R&B singer was breached because of her size. Not only that she was very active in the complete project with writing and or co-writing twelve of the thirteen tracks and either produced or co-produced seven of the thirteen. From the start with, "Don't Go Away (Interlude)" she incorporates a gospel feel and showcases her range with a deep and soulful edge to it. Soul Of A Woman contains both "Friend Of Mine" and the remix that was remixed by R. Kelly. "Friend Of Mine" the original version is about the deception and infidelity of her friend with her lover as "Friend Of Mine (Remix)" featuring guest vocalists R. Kelly and Ronald Isley taking shots at the male lover with a completely different feel. "Secret Love" and "You Complete Me" were both produced by 112's Daron Jones. With "Secret Love" being the upbeat of the two, this song is about finally exposing her feelings about her secret relationship. Featuring both Daron Jones and Quinnes Parker (of 112) is a great collaboration on "You Complete Me" for a loving duet with the trio as the masculine vocals gives this LP more emotions. "Don't Say Goodbye" is a mid-tempo song with varied kicks and fast paced highs as her vocals are layered perfectly for fuller sound. Continuing on the same tempo with a slight dance swing is "Kiss Test". On this pop quiz, Kelly definitely deserves an A+. The title track was merely a filler with the Tony! Toni! Tone! sample. With lyrics such as the following "...I need a healing for my soul..." on "Soul of A Woman (Interlude)" delivers the pain, hurt and feelings that is strong as the other songs found on this album. Kelly compares her love to another woman on "Her" as Kelly's vocals win the battle. "Your Love" featuring Lil' Cease isn't strong enough to be a single, but keeps you in tuned with the graceful mid-tempo soul tune. Missing only a bottom beat, the climatic epic "Take Me To A Dream" captures memories that lives within. Incorporating her gospel roots there's "Lord Of All" that places you on the pew bright and early Sunday morning. Kelly Price's Soul Of A Woman is a complete package that has been missing in any solo female R&B artist with her soulful debut.
Evolution........2006-01-28
In 1993, Kelly Price was discovered by Mariah Carey and sang background for her and other major artists such as R. Kelly, Brian McKnight, 112, Montell Jordan and was sought after by Ronald Isley (a.k.a. "Mr. Biggs") in 1997. She later signed to his label, T-Neck Records that same year and released one powerhouse of a debut album the following year. Not only did she sing; (my badd!!) SAAAAAAANG the mess out of this album, but she added depth to it by writing and producing most of the songs presented. She is a true talent and her spirit evokes passion, presence and emotion throughout every song. The introduction of this work of art is an interlude song called, "Don't Go Away," which features a moving gospel jazz piano & organ performance by producer Alvin West and Kelly's stirring standout vocalise just indicates that this album has the cohesiveness to take you on a series of emotional high's. The album's lead single, "Friend of Mine," which was produced by Stevie J, tells the story of betrayal by a best friend with her lover. Releasing this single was a very positive move for the label, as this single alone propelled "Soul of A Woman" quickly into gold status during its first month after hitting the stores. This seasoned debut for Kelly Price included other smashes like "Secret Love," the 2nd single, (produced by 112's Daron Jones) the smoothly seductive "Don't Say Goodbye," "Kiss Test," the duet with Daron in "You Complete Me," "Her," the silky ballad, "Take Me To A Dream," the inspirational "Lord of All," and the most popular recording in the set, "Friend of Mine [Remix]," featuring R. Kelly & Ronald Isley. The album thrives on originality, precision and creativity. Kelly would follow up with other promising albums such as, "Mirror, Mirror," "Priceless," and she hit big in the Tyler Perry stage play, "Why Did I Get Married?" (a.k.a. "He Proposed") in 2004. Also, after losing her mother-in-law to breast cancer, she has become a die-hard supporter for retrieving breast cancer research. A dazzling career for a dazzling artist and an even more dazzling person. Jus' give us one more album, Kelly!! We're waitin' patiently!!!!
Middel school music.......2005-04-05
I loved this album in middel school! Secret Love and its remix made me buy the album and after that I was hooked, the only song i didn't care for we will just blame on lil' Cease or whatever his name was. Take me to a dream is my champion cut from this album, and the studio work she put into the album makes it truely personel, and her voice is so ruch and full. The titel track is another stand out cut that alot of people can probably relate alot to..about that special person in your life that you sometimes let down. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys soul aand r&b..I miss the times of these albums..before Ciara and Lil Jon(no disrespect).
Soul of a woman is an excellent debut that still is great.......2005-02-04
Kelly Price came out with Friend of Mine and everyone was wondering who this girl is. Her debut is great from start to finish. Kelly Price is probably the closest to the next Aretha we are gonna get. R&B at its best filled with joy, pain, and passion. Price is sassy enough to carry the he done me wrong tunes but passionate to sing the desperate love songs. Kelly Price is a musical treasure and everyone should listen to the CD.
Favorites: Friend of Mine, Secret Love, Don't say Goodbye(best song on album), Her, You complete me, Friend of Mine remix.

Not Exactly "Wonder"-ful.......2007-07-26
This CD is clearly not Stevie Wonder's best effort! I guess he was running out of ideas, or else he just wanted to create an album for the current generation of "Listen-while-you-drive" listeners. "I Just Called to Say I Love You" might just be the most overrated song he has ever written. As far as soundtrack album is concerned, one for the movie "Jungle Fever" is much better.
Mixed bag.......2006-10-11
Although I've had this album since it came out in 1984 - first on vinyl and more recently on CD - I only got to see the movie it's from a few weeks ago. I'd like to say it was worth the wait but I don't want to lie.
But this is about the soundtrack. It's a mixed bag. Some of the songs are simply stunning, especially ones like "It's You" and "Weakness" where Stevie duets with Dionne Warwick. The chemistry between them works so well, to this day I still wonder why they didn't do more stuff together. Talking about where Stevie flies solo, the title track I simply don't get while on the other hand, "Don't Drive Drunk" sends a very useful message with a manic kind of humour that makes it enjoyable every single time I hear it. "Love Flight In Flight" is classic Stevie and the instrumental track "It's More Than You" is a joy - especially to a jazz head like me. I also wonder why Stevie never did more instrumental or even jazz work. Despite what I remember reading him say in an interview many years ago, it's not like he hasn't got the talent.
Then there's the one track where Dionne flies solo and "Moment's Aren't Moments" is simply musical passion.
Finally there's the dire "I Just Called To Say I Love You" which was (and still is) anathema to many Stevie fans worldwide. The song makes me cringe every time I hear it. Ironic then, that it was one of his biggest selling singles of all time and the only one of his singles to get to number one here in the UK. Go figure.
Like I said, a mixed bag. But no Stevie Wonder fan's collection could be called complete without it. Highly recommended.

Between you & me..........2007-07-24
Back in 2005, one of my favorite artists by the name of Jaguar Wright re-made the song "Woman To Woman" on her album, Divorcing Neo 2 Marry Soul. I instantly fell in love with the song and I just had to hear the original. So I bought this the other day.
Before listening to the album straight through, I had to cheat and listen to her version. No disrespect to Ms. Wright, but... there's just no comparison! Shirley is an amazing soul singer and she delivers the lyrics with true skill, expression and class. Why is she not more well-known?! Going through the rest of the album, I loved it just as much as the title track. I especially enjoyed "It Ain't No Fun." When Shirley speaks in her songs, it really feels genuine, unscripted and exclusive. This is a great 70's soul album and I highly recommend it.
A less famous Aretha!.......2007-01-10
Shirley Brown can sing! I had never heard of her, but thought I would give her a try, since I really like 70's soul music, and I was definitely NOT disappointed. Ms. Brown sounds like a souped-up Aretha Franklin. If anything, her vocal sound is a bit cleaner and more "bel canto" than the great Aretha. Granted, the songs on this album can't compare to the Motown classics in the Franklin songbook, but this album is really nice.
shirley, I need you tonight.......2006-09-02
this is one of the most beautiful soul albums I've ever listened to... shirley's voice is incredible... every single song is a true pearl...
A Timeless Classic.......2000-08-05
This is one of those great albums which sound ever-green. All the songs on the album are great. "Woman to Woman" is perhaps the best-known number on the album, but other memorable offerings include "It Ain't No Fun", "As Long As You Love Me," and "Passion". I truly believe that one has only to listen once to this album to become a Shirley Brown fan.

Anchored by a greasy wah-wah guitar and pushed along by a no-nonsense, finger-wagging attitude, "Heard It All Before" is the sort of scorned-woman anthem that even dawgs can dig. Credit Macy Gray protégé Sunshine Anderson, who on her debut injects R&B with gritty sass and breathes some old soul life into the game. With a slurred, slightly off-key voice that recalls Mary J Blige, Anderson unleashes little soap operas in which good women are in search of good men, and how those men ultimately fail them. In true soul-mama style, Anderson is at her fiercest when she is at her most rejected, and that determination elevates even some of the iffier material here into triumph. --Amy Linden

Slept On Lovely.......2006-08-26
Sunshine Anderson was definitely slept on her album. She had great songs with meaningful lyrics, good production, but she lacked promotion. I think if she was marketed better she would've pushed more units. Standout tracks are " Where Have You Been", "Crazy Love", "Lunch or Dinner", and "Your Woman". Sunshine has lots of soul, which is lacking in the industry right now all she needs is good people behind her and her career will certainly take off. Please don't count Sunshine out.

Hip-Hop-Soul.......2004-06-13
I read all the reviews, and nobody mentioned that is has a Hip-Hop Soul vibe to it. What people fail realize on this review messageboard is that the music industry is seriously lacking Hip-Hop-Soul and Hip-Hop as a whole. See Mike City (the producer of this Sunshine album) is getting slept on lovely =(
Here's the list of Hip Hop Soul albums of lately that I'm feeling:
1/2. Carl Thomas - "Emotional" (2000)
1. Amerie - "All I Have" (2002)
2. Sunshine Anderson - "Your Woman" (2000/2001)
3. Donell Jones - "My Heart" (1996)
4. Usher - self-titled debut (1994) and 8701 (2001); the Confessions CD should go take a nap.
5. Yvette Michele - "My Dream" (1997)
6. Soul For Real - "For Life" (1996) and "Candy Rain" (1994/1995)
7. Mary J. Blige - "Whats The 411" (1992), "My Life" (1994),
"Mary" (1999) [good comeback CD for her]
8. Faith Evans - "Faithfully" (2001) [good comeback CD for her career], "Faith" (1995) and NOT kEEP THE FAITH..THAT WAS HER WORSE CD (even though she had a couple of joints on it)
9. Davina - "Best of Both Worlds" (1998)
10. Leschea - "Rhythm & Beats" (1997)
11. the first Jill Scott CD (1999)
12. Angie Stone's 2001 "Mahogany Soul" CD
13. Frankie - "My Heart Belongs To You" (1997) [before Musiq Soulchild, there was Frankie...he told the Al B Sure vibe to the neosoul/hip-hop soul level - reminds you of a younger version of Musiq]
14. J. Lo - "That Was Me..Then" (2002) [everybody hates J Lo but this is her best CD and it was a Hip Hop Soul CD cuz she worked with mad NY producers] - I don't judge people's music and their personal life the same way so go figure.
15. Veronica Vasquez - "V..As In Veronica" (1995) and "Rise" (1997) [she got slept on crazily!!! Sounds like J Lo with vocal training -- she should be eating on that Boricua diva soul plate, not J Lo even though J Lo's last CD was bangin]
16. J. Quest - "The Quest Is On" (1995) [I'm trying to figure out if Frankie J. and J. Quest are the same artists with different names...because they are both Latino and sound the same when singing].
Peace \/

Very good album.......2005-08-28
This is one of Chaka's best solo albums. Although it features early-90's production values, the strong songwriting and singing by Chaka more than compensate for the dated sounds.
There is a fine mix of R&B ("Love You All My Lifetime"), ballads ("Look At Me That Way"), dance-pop ("Facts of Love"), and even a reggae-tinged mid-tempo ballad (the stunning "Telephone"). All the tracks fit well together, making this one of Chaka's most cohesive solo albums.
I jumped for joy when this album won a Grammy award!.......2004-10-02
This album just shows Chaka Khan at her best. Probably her best solo album to date! You can just feel the soul and spirit of her singing in songs like Love You ALL my Lifetime, You can Make the Story Right, Keep Giving Me Lovin' and my favorite, the funky second song of the album by the Barnes production/writing duo. I played this back in 1992 and couldn't stop playing it--all the songs were superb! I was so happy that the album won a Grammy Award, for Best R&B album of something (forgot what category it was)! For that, those voters just were moved by that voice too! Even more than three decades later, she's still well loved by all of us with her passion for the music. If you haven't gotten this album, you need to see a psychologist, because you need to be moved by the soul and passion of Chaka Khan singing ovet these songs! Brilliant and excellent album!

CHAKA KHAN, "The Woman I Am" (Warner Bros.) Review by Kirk Douglas Provo
Chaka Khan is unique among singers. A highly expressive artist possessing vast vocal resources, she can come across as wild R&B diva one moment, then effortlessly transforms herself into a purring jazz chanteuse the next. For the impassioned listener, enjoying a Chaka Khan recording often involves moments of careless abandon, along with joyful burst of elation. The casual, new listener may feel lost in a world of soulful wailing and jazz-scale phrasing more commonly found in vintage recordings by the likes of greats Bessie Smith and Sarah Vaughan.
Following a four year break between albums, Khan returns here in high form. Right from the Stevie Wonder-like churning funk drive of lead-off track "Everything Changes" over to the hip hop-jazz/soul sensibilities of "Give Me All", it's clear. The singer is not only back on the scene, but for the first time in the nearly ten years of an often erratic solo career with Warner Brothers Records, the artist is in control. For, regardless of the fact that "The Woman I Am" employs the services of a multitude of producers, writers, and co-writers alike, this album has an overall feeling of jointness and focus which has been lacking in Khan's otherwise engaging, yet over-looked output of recent years. As the title indicates, the former lead-singer of the innovative Rufus has firmly put her foot down. In a recording career spanning nearly twenty years, the artist has undertaken a more active behind-the-scenes role in the music she makes. Acting as Executive In Charge Of Production on this project, Khan has re-emerged as a songwriter too, and with quite the impressive offerings. "Telephone" is a reggae/funk fusion that could not be more tailor-made for Khan's unique brand of stylish singing. "Keep Givin' Me Lovin'" matches fun-loving, old-school Chaka-isms with quasi New-Jill rhythm tracks while "Facts Of Love", with its up to the minute production values is a good articulation of the varied stages of a romantic affair, offering shades of Rufus (Hawk Wolinski-like keyboard turns are prevalent)! "The Woman I Am" - All star writers/good message tune (Brenda Russell, actress/artist Dyan Cannon, with Chaka)! Chaka's growth as writer is evident. This song exudes confidence on many levels.
On the not-written-with-Chaka end we find tasteful choices in "Love You All My Lifetime", the album's first, chart-climbing single - a reunion with David Gamson of Scritti Polliti whom worked with Khan on 85's "Destiny" project. Very funky; immensely catchy chorus. Poignant, bittersweet renderings of verses. First-rate Chaka wailing announce that That Voice is not only still there but in GREAT shape! "I Want" - Chaka thrown to "recycled" call and response soul-funk groove. She, of course, tears it up! Lovely layering of her vocals. Exhibits fully-developed harmonising skills throughout. "You Can Make The Story Right" - Written and produced by the late Wayne Braithwaite, enough cannot be said about this bouncy mid-tempo track that is one of Chaka's best attempts at being current, yet herself. Smooth delivery. Very good song. Superb vocal choices by Chaka. "This Time" - another reunion here. Written in-part by David Lasley ("Roll Me Through The Rushes", from Chaka, her first solo outing). Pop ballad-Chaka ("Through The Fire", "Got To Be There") strikes again! Warm, caressing vocal; mature, full-bodied ... beautiful. "Don't Look At Me That Way" - What can you say ...?!! Penned by the almost-legendary-by-now Diane Warren. A ballad slightly a bit more on the pop side of things, with a great Chaka pop-ish vocal with splendid melody, tight bridge, infectious chorus typical of most Diane Warren compositions. As with "This Time", very radio friendly. Over all, "The Woman I Am" as an album is a captivating testimony of everything a good pop record should be - diverse, yet cohesive. A satisfying discovery in the other-wise bland music business of late. A tour de force that is at once a feel good romp and a reflective chronicle of someone coming to terms with all that they are and can aspire to be. Perhaps the finest display of all the woman that is Chaka since '82's "Chaka Khan" LP. The word on the street is true, Chaka Khan is back - and she is still very much Everywoman!!!

Welcome Back Chaka!!!.......2002-12-29
The Woman I Am was just the record Chaka Khan needed to produce as a respectable comeback in 1992. Every track is slammin'. My personal faves are the funky and jazzy numbers, ala Everything Changes, I Want, Love You All My Lifetime, Love With No Strings and Telephone. The Ballads are nice too. This Time is the perfect song to play at a wedding. Bravo to Chaka! She's the best!

I can't recommend this album enough. I probably even wrote a review of it before...but I recently picked this up again and am still blown away. Every song is different and initially, it took a bit to grow on me but now it's forever in my best cd collection. The vocals are crystal, soulful beyond words, and HOTTER than lava. The music is good too with rythmic beats and unique melodies and bits of jazz, r/b, funk, pop all throughout. I love it. Check it out..this is what a real artist with a powerhouse voice and great songs can do! All others should bow down and worship the Queen!!

Top-Notch R&B.......2007-07-07
I first heard this disc in 1999, I fell in love with the great quality of her voice and the musicianship of this album. A heavily slept-on release, every cut is a little slice of heaven. The funky cuts "Action" and "Fire" are certifiable head-nodders and her mid-tempo and ballads("Mornin'" and "Through It All") just melt in your ear. It's a shame that more people don't know about this vastly under prompted piece of work. I HIGHLY recommend this disc If you like versatile artists, think Chaka Khan meets Minnie Riperton meets Phylis Hyman.
Brigette Mcwilliam's New album.......2006-09-15
Is named starlight lounge. It was released in europe not over here. You have to search under Brigette not Briggette Mcwilliams. Different vibe but similar to this with live instruments and drums, think brazlian flavored but she handles this very effectively. Thanks to the russians I was able to get this. hint.
Another great and overlooked album.......2006-08-14
I first discovered this woman on WHUR in DC when "Fire" was in pretty good rotation. That song is probably the single SEXIEST song of the 90s...not nasty, not filthy, just SEXY...and that's I word I never use. Yet...this one of those EXTREMELY rare songs that makes a brotha's nature rise when he hears it. Her delivery is extremely sultry. This song was my intial reason for seeking out this album. It took awhile to find it as it may have had a limited release. The other song that grabbed me--because of airplay--was "Mornin'" which sounds more like CLASSIC Rufus and Chaka Khan than anything Chaka has done since she parted ways with Rufus. As someone else has said, though, that's not too much of a surprise give that Brigitte is the daughter of Rufus alumna Paulette McWilliams...and Rufus' bassist Bobby Watson is present all over the album. One thing that got me about the album was that all of the songs seemed familiar to me...even though they were new. They were all GREAT songs, but it almost seemed to be a rehash of things that had come earlier.
Too Much Woman - soul lovers get this one while you can!.......2006-05-26
Want to know one of the biggest mysteries of the modern world? How on the one hand, airhead bimbos with names like Brianna, Sierra and Chakeera can simply strip down to their underwear, grab a mic and race up to the top of the charts garnering multi-platinum sales in the process, while on the other, a talented singer like Brigette McWilliams is hardly known of. Even I didn't know who she was until a friend brought her to my attention recently and I consider myself a man in the know when it comes to music. The fact that this CD was relased back in 1997 - almost ten years ago now - just adds to my shame. And to my frustration.
Well, thank goodness for friends with knowledge is all I can say. Incidentally, it was this same friend who told me about Donnie and Frank McComb, two other vastly underrated and overlooked artistes (where on earth are they these days?) in my opinion and guess what? This CD is produced by the same musical genius that has worked with both those singers: Steve 'The Scotsman' Harvey.
I wouldn't say McWilliams is the best singer I've ever heard but she definitely has soul. She evokes an era when people like Chaka Khan, Phyllis Hyman and Angela Bofill ruled the airwaves. (Those were the days, weren't they Joseph?) The production is top notch. This is a solid set of soul songs and I recommend anyone who is into this kind of music go out and get this one right now. As it is, it's only available (to US listeners) on UK import and the way things are going, it probably won't be long before it's out of print altogether. As she doesn't seem to have released anything subsequent to this set, one can only assume that she's been dropped by her record label and hasn't been able to secure a deal since.
If that's the case then that's one of the biggest tragedies of the modern world. In my opinion, of course.
PS. Watch out for the hidden track, an acoustic version of "Through It All" at the end of the CD.
this is an incredibly good cd!!!!.......2006-04-16
I am not going to spend a lot of time raving about this cd. It's very, very good! I pride myself on listening to, and knowing good music, especially from little known artists. This is almost as good as it gets depending upon what genre you prefer. This cd reminds me of the feelings i had when i first heard Diane Steinberg's "universal child", Brenda Russell's "Brenda Russell", Patti Austin sing "say you love me", Seawind perform "follow your road" the Writers perform "whats come over me" and many others! Ms. McWilliams has REAL talent, and she can sing! My favorite vocalist of all time is Phyllis Hyman, and NO this is not a clone or anything like that, I only say that to say this; this cd reminded me of other times and the beautiful music i enjoyed! I must concur with all those who have given this cd 4 or 5 stars, their commentary will be more indepth than mine, but we share the same enthusiasm for this fantastic artist! I play the guitar, and I really like the music produced by guitar players, but i also love the sax, the piano and vocals. I might wake up and practice some shred metal, then when i am brushing my teeth, i find my myself singing "morning" by this artist! (lol) this is a really well done and beautiful cd!

Album Description
Shanice, formerly Shanice Wilson, is a Grammy nominated artist with #1 singles and gold albums to her credit. Boasting a five octave voice, it's good to know she's back on the music scene after a five year hiatus. She brings a more adult flavor to this new set of sexy songs. "Every Woman Dreams", is a solid blend that ranges from funky, uptempo grooves that feed the sexual palate, to beautiful full bodied ballads.

THE FIRST 2 TO 3 SONGS ON THE CD I REALLY DIDN'T CARE ABOUT, OR SHALL I SAY I WASN'T FEELING IT. BUT THE REST I REALLY LIKE SHE GET TO THE POINT OF LETTING EVERYONE KNOW SHE LOVES HER MAN AND NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAY. I GIVE THIS ON 4 STARS
every woman dreams.......2006-11-18

Shanice's Happiness.......2006-08-27
I'm not sure I can find words to describe how much I love Shanice's voice. Her voice is amazing, beautiful, rich and striking. If I was a record company owner, I would sign her under mostly any condition she wanted. That's how much I enjoy her voice. I have been a fan of hers her a very long time, and I've been anticipating her return for quite some time. "Every Woman Dreams" is her comeback album, after a 8-9 year absence from the music industry.
The first time I listened to "Every Woman Dreams", I was not impressed: I must not have given it a good enough listen because it is definitely a solid album. Anyone who listened to this LP would know that Shanice is a devoted wife and mother, and she REALLY loves her family. This album was basically written with them in mind. Shanice did write the material on this album, afterall. Although she wrote some nice words, her lyrics were at their pinnacle when Babyface wrote them. Coincidently, the song I liked least on this record was the one that was released first: the title track. I cannot get into that song. The production is almost unlistenable, Shanice sounds selfish and superficial, and the lyrics are corny. She's talking about how a woman needs to find a man who will buy her Gucci bags and diamond rings. "So Sexy" is a nice dance track. I like the production. The lyrics were alright, but this track overall is an album highlight. The most outstanding song on this album is by far "Forever Like A Rose". Most people who own this album are drawn to it, and I am no exception. Shanice sings this song with such passion and such strong emotion that whoever listens to it can just feel her and what she's attempting to convey. "Chocolate" and "Joy" are clearly about her husband, comedian Flex. "Chocolate" was an overall weak song, with weak instrumentation and corny lyrics, but "Joy" is quite the opposite. This is such a nice song, written just for the love of her life. Her voice is exercised greatly on this track. Speaking of which, Shanice covers Minnie Ripperton's "Loving You" for a second time. She first did this song on her album, "Inner Child". On her more current rendition of "Loving You", her voice sounds more mature and her adlibs are a little different. She did a nice job, again.
I enjoyed this album overall. Shanice is one of the most underrated artists in the music industry. I hope that one day she becomes just as exposed at her contemporaries, because vocally, she can give them ALL a run for their money!

Could Have Been Alot Better........2006-08-03
Im A Big Fan Of Shanice, But This Album Could Have Stayed On The Shelf. With This New Album Her Voice Has Matured Drastically More Powerful And Amazing Than Ever. But This Album Was Too Mushy For Me, Most Of The Songs We Less Than Mediocre,The Lyrics Were Tire Some, And The Production Was Wack. The Only Songs I Like Are Everywoman Dreams,So Sexy, And Take Care Of You. Shanice Didn't Use Her Voice To Her Full Capabalities On This Album, I Miss The Long Drawn Out Notes, And Belting Like She Did On Tracks Like Turndownthelights,The Way You Love Me, Etc. Also The Album Was Not Even Promoted.
A True Disappointment.......2006-04-25
I was rather disappointment in this CD. I mean, its okay! Nothing special at all. I was expecting something.... more. Since Shanice was gone for so long, I thought she was going to "bring it." Instead the entire CD was "I'm so happy I got a man." The entire CD. Song after song, was the same thing. I forced myself to listen to the entire CD, hoping that she would be able to talk about something else. So, my advise is, borrow the CD from a friend.
