About the Artist
Elridge is a songwriter and performer of formidable talent. His driving combination of rock and funk and his dynamic stage presence are the stuff of urban legend. Like the night he hung from the rafters, dropping into the crowd at Minneapolis' 7th St. Entry. Or the time he nearly caused a riot opening for Color Me Badd at Memphis' Mud Island Amphitheater.
But that's only part of the story of a man who's overcome his share of heartache, who strives to present a positive vibe in these uncertain days. His music is filled with stories of hope and regret and people who can't quite connect. But through it all, it's belief in yourself that gets you over. Elridge is a musician who must be heard to be appreciated, must be seen to be believed.
Product Description
"How It Used To Be" sums up both the music and message of this premier release from Elridge. The album is heavy on the groove side, using real instruments and live vocals. The feel tips the hat to Prince & Kravitz, while the production runs the gamut from Ohio Players and Zapp to modern hip-hop. The lyrics recall how it was growing up and how it is now, love both new and old, and friends who aren't around anymore. And there are a few stone cold jams thrown in for good measure--just how it used to be...

5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10
Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!
Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27
Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25
As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !
A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27
If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.
The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.
Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.
Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22
Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

Amazon.com essential recording
This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph Lanza

Magic of love.......2007-03-10
Nothing but Gene and George: the hard work and the happiness in music, conducting by the magician Vince.
Noone is better, noone could do better.
American masterpiece with european feelings.
Filled with musical gems.......2004-02-17
This comprehensive edition is a must have for fans of the movie and of the Gershwins. The outtakes, contrary to the first review above, are excellent. Gene Kelly offers a wonderful vocal of "I've Got a Crush on You" and his short riff on "'S Wonderful" is almost like an acoustic version, much different than the over-the-top duet in the movie. And the Oscar Levant piano pieces are as close to George sitting down at the keys as we're going to get.
TOO LONG !!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-06-17
I would not suggest buying this version of this sondtrack!!! The underscores and the extra tracks that are not featured in the film are not neccesary. Rhino records puts the extras out to jack up the price of the CD (making one LP into 2 CDs).
I would buy the ORIGINAL CAST SOUNDTRACK released by MGM records. You will enjoy this version ever so much more without all the extras!!!
GERSHWIN'S TALENT.......2001-08-12
Many agree that the talented George Gershwin is a fabulous pianist, and alongside Ira, he helped to create some of the most beloved music ever. After viewing the movie that was filled with song and dance, I was pleased to discover that the soundtrack was readily available. The plot of An American in Paris mainly focuses on the lives of three friends and their dreams in addition to the romance that they encounter in the most popular European city. Gene Kelley is a struggling artist who soon falls in love, and the many songs in this cd express his emotions. Who wouldn't want to dance to Gershwin's spectacular tunes such as "Embraceable You?" These original songs included in this two cd set are well worth the price. Furthermore, "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" is a true favorite with unique lyrics. Don't miss out on this must have cd collection.
Ga Ga for Gershwin.......2000-12-13
Nearly every popular Gershwin tune is represented here, either as an instrumental, a vocal, or a production number. I am not a big fan of the film, but the soundtrack is fabulous. There are some stereo tracks here, too. Yet another triumph in the Turner/Rhino soundtrack collection of MGM films. As a sidenote I would like to thank Rhino for their extremely co-operative staff. When I bought this CD I opened up the very extensive booklet and was disappointed to find that due to an error on the assembly line I had received an insert that had some pages repeated and others deleted. I contacted Rhino and they sent me a new booklet which arrived within a week! That's what I call excellent customer service. The really neat thing is the fact that I have both booklets. The flubbed copy is sort of a collector's item to me.

William Bolcom is my kind of musician. He writes music that is sometimes adventurous but always based in a recognizable American idiom. And he's a terrific ragtime pianist, the best Joplin player I've heard. With these credentials, of course he's a wonderful Gershwin player. These are the best piano performances of Gershwin I know. After you hear those, Bolcom joins his wife Joan Morris for very flavorful versions of 10 George and Ira Gershwin songs. The whole disc is a delight, and the original analog recordings still sound fine. Highly recommended to all Gershwin lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Peculiar.......2005-01-26
I can see how someone might enjoy this album. William Bolcom is a top-flight pianist and the idea of playing the tunes as George Gershwin played them at parties is intriguing.
Because my ear is used to it, I guess, I would like to have heard longer performances of fewer songs. Each one sounded to me like a snippet -- over too soon. Because of that, plus the fact that I'm not a fan of Joan Morris' showy voice, I give the album one thumb up.
Gershwin Never Sounded Better!.......2002-06-25
This is a fantastic CD! Back in the 70's, pianist William Bolcom and his singer wife Joan Morris made a delightful series of albums on the Nonesuch label of old songs from the first half of the twentieth century - just glorious voice backed by brilliant piano. As Ira Gershwin might say - who could ask for anything more? The music is not only beautifully performed, you can hear the joy of the performance in every note. And Bolcom and Morris were never better than when doing Gershwin.
A combination of two albums, the first part of this CD is all piano. The Gershwin Songbook consists of brief (some under a minute) versions of some of his more popular songs in the way that Gershwin himself famously played them at parties. They demonstrate that Gershwin was as gifted a pianist as he was a composer. The other instrumental tracks are some of Gershwin's solo piano pieces, including the wonderful Rialto Ripples, a rag written when he was just seventeen. For me, the pinnacle of both Gershwin's and William Bolcom's artistry is reached on the second of the three preludes - a classic study of a bluesy mood.
Just when you think things can't get any better, Joan Morris arrives. She effortlessly sings and swings her way through ten of Gershwin's best songs from the cheeky comedy of By Strauss to the smoky moodiness of Someone To Watch Over Me. Maybe I'm just an incurable old romantic, but the ballads are the best of all.
No Gershwin collection can be complete without this CD. Now if only I could find a copy of that Bolcom/Morris song about Humphrey Bogart...

Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20
This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.
Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15
This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!
Joni James at Abbey Road!.......2002-07-23
Miss Joni James swept away on a veritable ocean of violins!
This classic LP remastered in pristine sound with tender torch tunes rendered "close to the microphone" by one of the 1950s most popular singing icons. Recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road studios with those lush, sweeping Acquaviva arrangements. Joni's most divine moment! (Tacked on to the original album are 6 tracks, also with the 100 Strings orchestra, of songs from her Jimmy McHugh tribute LP.)

Album Description
"One of New England's best songwriters"-The Boston Globe Steven Wright jokes "I went into a diner and the sign said breakfast anytime, so I ordered French toast during the Renaissance." Terry Kitchen has that kind of songwriter's imagination, and that's how it used to be, his seventh solo album for the urban campfire label, takes the listener from the 1840s Pennsylvania coal boom to Kitty Hawk to the early civil rights movement to the shock-and-awe present to an all-too-possible ecologically barren future. Kitchen, whose songs have won the USA Songwriting Competition and Mid-Atlantic Song Contest and been runner up in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, crafts each song with the care of a short story writer, and gives each a musical setting that makes its world come alive, from the driving working man's groove of "Mr. Ginder's Coal" to the prairie lilt of "Jumping Fences" to the world beat of "Thin Blade of Grass." While each song is anchored by his deft guitar work and his immediate, honest vocals, Kitchen and his excellent supporting players paint detailed soundscapes, from the mandolin/Dobro Americana of "Bang Your Head Against the Sky" to the bossa nova saxophone of "Night of a Thousand Lanterns" to the charming a cappella arrangement of the Beach Boys' "In My Room" (included as a bonus hidden cut). Musicians include John McGann (mandolin, from Wayfaring Strangers), Alizon Lissance (keyboards, from The Lovedogs), Larry Finn (drums, Berklee School of Music), Brice Buchanan (slide guitar & harmony vocals, from Terry's '80s rock band Loose Ties and now Firefly), Sarah Telford (harmony vocals, Firefly) and Carl Clemens (tenor sax, wood flute). Kitchen himself also adds harmonica, lead guitar, Dobro, bass and keyboards.

Customer Reviews:
Simply Marvelous!.......2001-05-21
One of the best CDs I've bought in years! Granted, I'm a bit Lerner-biased having played Col. Pickering in My Fair Lady before...and I just love his stuff anyways -- but nonetheless this CD is a GREAT buy! I found it in a store somewhere about 2-3 months ago, and I don't think it's left my CD player since. Domingo's occasional appearances add SUCH classy humor that I just roll over laughing everytime he sings! Granted, one must be at least fairly familiar with the story and flow of My Fair Lady to get all the jokes, but even without that, it's still a series of stellar performances. Buy this CD!

Album Description
"How It Used To Be" sums up both the music and message of this premier release from Elridge. The album is heavy on the groove side, using real instruments and live vocals. The feel tips the hat to Prince & Kravitz, while the production runs the gamut from Ohio Players and Zapp to modern hip-hop. The lyrics recall how it was growing up and how it is now, love both new and old, and friends who aren't around anymore. And there are a few stone cold jams thrown in for good measure--just how it used to be...

DECADENT, DEVILISH, DELICIOUS...YOU GO "ELRIDGE".......2002-12-12
OH MY GOD!!! I'M GOING TO PLAY IT 'TILL IT WEARS OUT. R&B WITH A UPBEAT. NO ONE DOES IT BETTER THAN ELRIDGE...DON'T MISS THIS ONE.
You need to see them LIVE!!.......2002-04-30
I've been following Elridge for a couple of years now, and I had the pleasure of seeing them LIVE once again. They are the most electric group I've seen in awhile. They are awesome!!! Check them out!!
How It Used To Be-Elridge.......2002-04-30
When I first heard Elridge/How It Used To Be I was HOOKED!!! The diversity of the members, and the quality of the music is incredible!! They will have you dancing, singing and smiling in no time. If you don't know them I highly suggest you get to know them!!!
GREAT MUSIC!!.......2001-06-27
This CD is appropriately titled, as Elridge offers shades of music from the past. For those who love hip-hop, there's also some of that for your enjoyment. My favorite tracks are "Do You Remember" & "I'll Be There". Elridge displays a wide range of talent, with his music and song writing abiities. I would definitely like to hear more from this talented artist.
Watch out Lenny!.......2001-06-21
Think of Prince after emancipation. Eldridge has produced an album full of original soul and funk, yet his music reminds us that rock didn't begin with Elvis. His arrangements and lyrics take us to music back in the day, when all you really needed was a good guitar and a drum set to get your groove on. This first attempt suggests good things can only get better. Watch out Lenny, here comes Eldridge!
