Funk on Film

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Blaxploitation-era soul retrospectives have been compiled by fans as diverse as Ice-T and Quentin Tarantino, so the concept of Funk on Film is hardly a new one. Its mix of ubiquitous favorites ("Theme from Shaft," Bobby Womack's "Across 110th Street") and revelatory choices (Love Unlimited Orchestra's "Theme from Together Brothers," which sheds new light on the origins of the Quad City DJs' "C'mon 'n' Ride It [The Train]") is fresh, though. Even one of the pop-crossover hits here--the Curtis Mayfield-penned Gladys Knight and the Pips burner "On and On"--is rarely heard these days. You'll dig it. --Rickey Wright

"Wanna buy a monkey?" It'd be more exciting than this safe collection of musical performances from the Late Show. Although some of the duet pairings are intriguing (including Lyle Lovett with Al Green and Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach), most of the musicians sound like they're well aware they're playing in front of a national TV audience of millions. While performances from Paula Cole and Dave Matthews predate their explosion onto the charts, yesterday's top acts (Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow) sound like musical footnotes here. In truth, old timers Lou Reed and Patti Smith show their forebears how it's done. In the album's defense, it's an eclectic mix--but ultimately an uninspired one. --Greg Emmanuel

I lost this CD in Hurricane Katrina and I had to replace it. Fantastic collection of music.

1 out of 5 stars Sheila Rogers Produced This CD?.......2006-04-29

Let's face it, this compilation is so outdated, no wonder it comes in at a whopping 87,000 on Amazon in sales! The singers on this CD are dinosaurs and some are extinct!

Regardless, this CD's a good self-promotional tool for one of the Letterman's show music producers, Sheila Rogers which is its real purpose. It's her very first! Seeing how she hasn't produced any other records in her career, one can only guess the recording industry didn't think too highly of Ms. Roger's CD producing stunt.

I did some research on this CD's producer and Sheila Rogers is a former Rolling Stone Random Notes gossip columnist who jumped over to Letterman's show as a talent scout, later promoted to being one of the shows music producer's.

Ms. Rogers' manipulation of Letterman, who she personally suggested this CD project to, is a testiment to herself. Let me take this opportunity to worship thee, with 1 well deserved star.

4 out of 5 stars Worth a Reprise.......2005-06-26

"Live On Letterman" is a great collection that stands up 8 years later. Sheila Rogers has done an excellent job producing this for Reprise Records. The sound quality is crisp. The audience applause flows seamlessly between tracks giving the sense to the listener that you're listening to one long concert. There are some delightful tracks on the disc. Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" blazes out with his edgy vocals and slashing lead guitar. Aretha Franklin may have sung "Think" 3,000 times, but she belts it out with an energetic band that'd have James Brown looking up their phone numbers, "I ain't no psychiatrist or doctor with degree, but it don't take much high IQ to see what you're doing to me." Lenny Kravitz also blasts out with "Are You Gonna Go My Way" with a thunderous guitar storm. Other tracks on the set are also strong including R.E.M.'s "Crush With Eyeliner" & the softest track on the set, Elivis Costello & Burt Bacharach on "God Give Me Strength." This little walk down memory lane from the small screen is worth a reprise on your changer. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Live On Letterman : Music From The Late Show [LIVE].......2003-09-17

I've read the other reviews for this incredible CD; and have to admit...many of you are missing the big picture here. This collection of artists and titles are a must for any music buff. I play it regularly and find it endlessly entertaining. I just wish there were others produced and available...with Dave's fame and continued run on late night TV...I'm certain there'd be a dozen by now.

3 out of 5 stars Dead on Letterman.......2002-10-13

Good sound quality from Letterman's vaults, but many of the performers on this CD have been around too long. Quite frankly, this collection resembles the status quo of unchanging music including "dead" I mean REAL deadheads. They had their day in the sun -- time to move on!

5 out of 5 stars You need this tight, together and mean FUNK!.......1998-09-02

Although other CDs of the genre have been released before (Pimps, Players and Private Eyes and Players and Hustlers of the '70s), "Funk On Film" stands out as the best of the genre. It gives you the '70s sound of Motown, Stax, Polydor, Mercury, Atlantic and Buddah Records all on one CD. It is simply fantastic. The CD is authentic in every way, from the cover (which could be a great '70s Blaxploitation film poster) to the song order, which would play perfectly along any Super Fly or Shaft Sequel. The treats are Donny Hathaway's "Little Ghetto Boy" which is released on CD for the first time (as far as I know) and the great extended version of the James Brown classic "Down And Out In New York City" from the Fred Williamson flick "Black Caesar." Other highlights include "No Way Back" by The Dells, from the movie of the same name, another first-time-on-CD title. It's always great to hear "Across 110th Street," the classic Bobby Womack song heavily featured in Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown." Another great thing on here is the long version of the Staple Singers classic "Let's Do It Again," one of two Curtis Mayfield-penned songs ("On & On" by Gladys Knight is the second). A major surprise was the very thoughtful inclusion of G.C. cameron's "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday", from Cooley High. Most people (including myself and I hate to admit it) forgot that this song wasn't a Boys II Men song. It is a million times better than the cover version. My one complaint though is that it should have been longer!! A Box set maybe? This CD will make you want to hear more! You won't skip a single song listening to it. Well, maybe "Car Wash" after a few hundred listens. This is all a film and music lover could ever dream of. Don't wait.

I knew nothing of this movie but was familiar with Johnny Pate's work from "Shaft in Africa." It has the same jazzy, big band feel but has several mellower pieces similar to cuts from "Trouble Man." The vocal theme by Adam Wade is beautiful. Not as many uptempo tracks as you expect but great music. This cd and "Blacula" have been two of my better purchases in the genre. Neither soundtrack I knew much about either. If you like the smooth sound of "Trouble Man," get this cd. Excellent!!

I meant to buy the soundtrack and we picked up the score instead not reading the package and didn't know there were two different CDs... Not only were we pleasently surprised -- it is the best driving music ever... It's smooth and enjoyable... So, for a party -- the Soundtrack with Funk is down -- but just to relax -- pick up the score.

5 out of 5 stars YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!.......1999-10-05

This is an awsome score. Each time a muppet cd comes out, I never have time to buy it. Whenever I go to the store to buy it, it's out of print. KEEP THIS ONE IN PRINT FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY.

i discovered this little (actually, big) gem of a compilation several years ago in a bargain bin. i still can't believe that a treasure like this was marked down as it contains music from big hits like "shaft" all the way to "the mack". if you dig that style of cinematography or just the music, you'll need this excellent and hep album to complete your collection.

    Album Description

'Blue Note' inspired funk & jazz. The Meters meet the Tower of Power for a backyard jam. Meticulously arranged by award winning film composer Chris 'Whitey' Anderson, features breakout performances by Tower of Power horn alumni Lee Thornburg & Dave 'Woody' Woodford. Also features many surprise guests, including The Wallflowers Lap Steel & Dobro player Ben Peeler. Dobro and Steel may not seem like traditional instruments for a funk record, but this is no ordinary funk record - this is WHITEY'S CARNIVAL OF FUNK!
