City High's two-guys-and-a-girl combination will strike inevitable comparisons to their predecessors in the hip-hop neo- soulster sweepstakes, namely Digable Planets and the Fugees. But their perimeters have been adjusted to fit the post-millennial tension that urban radio is currently experiencing. Bypassing all sorts of obvious "conscious" hipsterisms, the trio's music strikes a fine balance between self-realization and street-level realness. The fact that they chose to address such basic concerns as low-income single motherhood (on "What Would You Do") and the perils of creeping with jailbait ("15 Will Get You 20"), immediately sets them apart from both the Missy Elliotts and the Lucy Pearls of the world. Stylistically, the record is surprisingly heavy on the smoothed-out R&B tip, and singer Claudette Ortiz is unquestionably more Destiny's Child than L-Boogie. But the production, handled by executive producer Wyclef Jean, DJ Clark Kent, and others, subverts the classic Quiet Storm formula and serves as an interesting counterpoint to the group's capable vocals. Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!

THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

Excellent Compilation with Marvelous Tracks.......2007-01-20

I enjoyed this compilation of Silk Road music very much. It delivers a nice, diverse sample of music from the region. My favorite track of the CD is Shikasta, but I like the others as well.

Beyond the first Silk Road CD.......2006-11-23

Yo-Yo Ma went beyond indeed. The first CD with Silk Road ensemble (When Strangers Meet) was inconsistent and somewhat experimental. This one however, is superb. As if in the 5 years the musicians got to know each other (but in truth, only a few musicians are the same). 23 traditional Eastern instruments are listed plus a number of western strings and other percussion was used. So the music on this CD gets my full attention, and as the title of first track suggests, you (can) get enchanted.
The tracks are ordered into three parts: Enchantments (1-5), Origins (6-9) and New Beginnings. First track is strangely familiar (like it was used in some film, but there is no mention of this). In third track this theme gets Chinese interpretation. The style from one track to the other changes, so you can't get bored or overexcited. Second is simply very nice, the fourth great intro of Armenian wind instrument duduk (played by famous Gevorg Dabaghyan), accompanied by percussion mostly, albeit the piece is short. 5 is gentle with cello and xun (Chinese ocarina), 6 orchestral from slow to cool, 7 again gentle with cello and vocal, 8 starts with yearning duduk and turns into orchestral battle, 9 cello and percussion. Track 10 is the only one with prominent vocal (love song) and introduces us to the last part of CD, which are more like jam sessions of all instruments. 11 and 13 are very lively. The last one, track 15, brings us a new interpretation of very ancient Chinese melody played on pipa.

Some would probably say this CD is commercialized. Personally I don't see any wrongdoings in this as long the music stays a high quality one. For the more authentic Silk Road one can always buy The Silk Road: A Musical Caravan.

This album has captured the soul of the Silkroad. There is not a single track in this album I don't like. I've been listening to it over and over and over again since I first got it. I think it's much better than the first one.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.

Clearly you are mistaken. I don't know who that guy is-the person below recommended-but there is NO COMPARISON to JESSYE NORMAN AND KATHLEEN BATTLE!!!! Jessye Norman herself has *30* HONARY DOCTRATES from places like Harvard, Juliard, Yale, Cambridge....I mean HELLO!!!! That guy had no where near the ease, the musicality or even the breath support as these two veterans show!! It is a beautiful CD though it came out in 1991 and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here: thank goodness I signed this disk out of the public library 'cause I'm sure not going to listen to it twice.

There is nothing wrong with the performances. Jessye Norman and Kathleen Battle sing beautifully, and there's no problem with the pick-up orchestra under James Levine.

The problem, and it's huge, is the conception of the show and the musical arrangements. To make the video marketable, I suppose, the producers decided that the concert had to be big: big names, big arrangements, big effects. So we have eighteen spirituals given the musical theatre treatment, with a philharmonic chorus providing chain-gang sound effects, big brass, and big percussion -- including a chinese gong. A chinese gong in a spiritual??? Spare me! Almost every track turns out sounding like either a curtain-raiser or a big, end-of-act production number with cute and predictable modulations between some of the stanzas and the sort of curly-cue orchestral ornamentation typical of Broadway shows.

And you know what? It all kills the spirituals stone dead. The spiritual is one of those musical forms where less is more and very little is best of all. That's how they started, after all. That's how and why they worked for their original audiences, and that's why they were powerful enough to make the transition from folk song to art song. If you want to hear Battle sing spirituals that are irresistible, listen to the set on her Salzburg recital CD, also with Levine (ASIN B00000E31B). There, the music speaks for itself and speaks with a strength and a beauty that the tracks on this disk never approach.

City High's two-guys-and-a-girl combination will strike inevitable comparisons to their predecessors in the hip-hop neo- soulster sweepstakes, namely Digable Planets and the Fugees. But their perimeters have been adjusted to fit the post-millennial tension that urban radio is currently experiencing. Bypassing all sorts of obvious "conscious" hipsterisms, the trio's music strikes a fine balance between self-realization and street-level realness. The fact that they chose to address such basic concerns as low-income single motherhood (on "What Would You Do") and the perils of creeping with jailbait ("15 Will Get You 20"), immediately sets them apart from both the Missy Elliotts and the Lucy Pearls of the world. Stylistically, the record is surprisingly heavy on the smoothed-out R&B tip, and singer Claudette Ortiz is unquestionably more Destiny's Child than L-Boogie. But the production, handled by executive producer Wyclef Jean, DJ Clark Kent, and others, subverts the classic Quiet Storm formula and serves as an interesting counterpoint to the group's capable vocals. There are many reasons as to why people think this group ended so prematurely. Some say its because they were not mature enough in understanding how to take advantage of their talents. I'd disagree. This cd is amazing, so amazing that a musical in LA which fundraises money for inner city communities has now been produced based on the cd. I wonder how many times such a thing has happened, especially since the music was made by a group of young and upcoming aritists. The music you wil find on this cd is some of the best entertaining hip-hop you'll ever come across. The kids were mentored by Wycleff, and such a professionally produced album allowed the talent of these kids, who can all both sing and rap extraordinarily well, to shine right through. And yeah, they may have come from a suburb, and thats not a city, but suburbs are basically cities, just a little more quiet. If anything living in a more quiet place allowed these kids the time to write, develop their talents and think about what they want to say.

We can all learn from the messages on these tracks, especially the most popular song "What would you do." The song is based on a real life experience and it has incredible truth in it. Real people similar to the single mother in this song are trapped in poverty today and living really hard lives. I read a quote made by one of the members of City High and he explained how its easy to judge quickly, but you have to put yourself in their shoes, and try to feel their pain. While people living tough lives shouldn't makes excuses for their ignorance, these people should also not be held responsible for putting an end to the problems. Its up to people like the group members of City High who were brought up in a better environment to help out. City High accomplished this by achieving world wide fame, and you might learn a little something by listening to their masterpiece. Buy the cd. Its worth the money.

I bought this disc as soon as it dropped in 2001, listened to it in entirety once then shelved it. I actually had it in my "sell" pile but decided to listen to it again. I don't know what was wrong with my ears back then but this is a very good debut cd from a group that we'll probably never hear from again. R&B and hip hop music in general have become a joke in that listeners are forced to listen to the same "christened few" while really talented people struggle to keep their music dream alive, put out quality music and satisfy music lovers. Unfortunately those that go outside the formulaic box are rarely heard from again after stellar debuts.

Claudette, Robby & Ryan each bring something different to the table, all can sing and rap adequately, more than a few of the songs stand out and the subject matter on their album is relevant to all.

That being said, needless to say after giving this disc a second listen, it's no longer in danger of being sold because I truly enjoy more than a few songs - Didn't Ya, Caramel, Best Friends, Sista, The Only One I Trust, So Many Things and the excellent Donny Hathaway remake, A Song for You.

I'm glad I wasn't so quick to give this cd away and gave it a second listen. If you are into r&b/hip hop and don't just write groups or artists off after one listen, you may be pleasantly surprised at how good this cd is.

Great CD!.......2005-07-01

For a "one-hit-wonder" group, this is actually a stellar CD. While "What Would You Do" and "Caramel" were the only main hits City High had, I'm very surprised that at least a couple other tracks didn't take off. As an avid music listener and enthusiast, this is one of my favorite CDs of all time. Each track is truly great and the lyrics have true, soulful meanings that hit me deep.

Llamas Kick up a Little Dust.......2007-04-11

If Brian Wilson had been born circa 1975, and the Beach Boys subsequently formed, as they were, in Brian's teenage years, then the High Llamas would be a nice approximation of what they might sound like today. As unfair as this may be to Sean O'Hagan, it is meant as a compliment. It is, however, becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss O'Hagan as a mere Brian "imitator". At this point in his - and the Llamas' - development, a serious argument can be made that O'Hagan has overtaken his hero/mentor. Using Brian's SMiLE as a point of departure, O'Hagan is now responsible for more of the quirky pop - all of it of high quality - than Brian himself. For casual listeners, the Llamas may seem a cheap imitation; for fans of lush, quirky, impressionistic pop music, the Llamas can now clearly stand on their own. Can Cladders is an unusual addition to their recorded canon, as it contains elements of what has made many of their previous recordings stand out.

While Brian and the Beach Boys are an obvious influence, if you were to take a blender, add equal parts Beach Boys/Brian Wilson, Stereolab and Pretzel Logic-era Steely Dan, the resulting album would sound a lot like Can Cladders. This points to clear development on the part of O'Hagan and the Llamas, as they move out of Brian's extensive shadow.

Whether we have to wait for the next Llamas album - or maybe O'Hagan will take the helm of another Stereolab CD - it will be interesting to see just where the imagination of Sean O'Hagan takes him next.

One of their best.......2007-04-06

Can Cladders is just unbelievable. O'Hagan and company deliver a thing of beauty this time out, taking us in a few unlikely places. Namely, female vocalists perfectly compliment O'Hagan's voice, the strings and harp here, even busting out into r&b territory on the fantastic "Winter's Day." They approach Brasil '66 on "The Old Spring Town." A thoroughly delightful release, one that I can't stop listening to.

More of the same but that's o.k........2007-03-30

There is not much here that a High Llamas fan will find to be different from the rest of the band's material. It's more of the 'Llamas inventive blend of breezy pop/open field folk/light electronica. The lyrics are delightfully nonsensical, the harmonies soar gently, the melodies stay in your head . . . Yet, despits its similarity to other Llamas records, this one stands out from the last few, maybe just because the songs are a little better this time. This gets better with each listen. It is not Hawaii, but it is as good as or better than any High Llamas album besides that one.

Wonderfull orchestral pop music. Great intrumentation. My folks would even dig this. I hear that Brian Wilson is not fond of Sean ! Who knows.......

Pastoral Daze.......2007-03-20

The High llamas continue to mine the territory charted by Sgt. Pepper era Beatles and Pet Sounds era Brian Wilson. Though they are often criticized for that, it's hard for me to see how they can be faulted, especially since they do it so well. Since the Beatles broke up just a few years after Pepper, and Wilson slipped into drug-induced dimensia, it can be argued that the Llamas consistency in this terrain should now put them on an equal status with those who inspired them rather than at their feet. This is some of the most well-crafted, creative pop music ever produced. Each song is as fine-tuned as a Swiss watch. Can Cladders follows along the lines of Beat, Maize and Corn. Breezy and pastoral, with an emphasis on airy harmonies and string arrangments, as well as the sounds of acoustic guitars, harps, keyboards and light percussion. On Can Cladders, the High Llamas again eschew the electronic burbles and warrbles of Cold and Bouncy and head straight to the forests and fields with chamber orchestra in tow. As usual, the lyrics are abstract in the extreme, tending to create an overall impression or mood rather than having any meaning in a literal sense; however, having said that, there does seem to be an emphasis on a nostalgic impression of the English countryside. I first listened to this CD while cruising around in my car with the windows down on a sun-drenched spring weekend. Trees were blossoming and flowers were blooming and Can Cladders was the perfect soundtrack.

The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

This New York City-based band sounds a lot like Austin, TX-based Spoon. A lot. And seeing as this is their first full-length, and it's rock music (so of course musical theft is involved to some degree), not to mention that Spoon is a pretty excellent band to start one's career sounding like, the act will not be judged too harshly for sounding so much like Spoon. Even though they totally do, from singer Ben Trokan`s wide-mouthed enunciation to the piano-driven, vaguely Beatles-y melodies, and rhythm-guitar heavy crunch. The production seems a bit slick, as if the group was going for some Interpol-type success, while the songs would perhaps be better served at a studio like Easley in Memphis. The lyrics are bright and not too serious ("Some things you can do in the city: walk around in circles/ meet Japanese girls"), while the band really plays these pretty waltz-pop songs well. Just, someone, anyone, please buy them some other records before they record again. The results are eagerly anticipated. --Mike McGonigal

5 star debut album.......2007-02-01

This is such a good debut album, that if this band only gets better with future releases, they will not be a best kept secret in indie rock for very long. The singer's voice is pretty much perfect: he hits the low notes & the high notes, sings soulfully & at times, seductively. The drums, piano, bass & guitars sound like they were never without each other: sounds like music made by good friends who are having a lot of fun. The words sound vague, but purposely vague. The enigmatic lyrics keep you listening after the melody hooks you in. In the future however, I would love to hear more open lyrics from them because the singer's voice could really do wonders with painfully honest words. In that respect, I would say they COULD be like Spoon, who started out making cool, short, addictive, but obscurely-worded songs, and later went on to open themselves up to different musical styles & more open lyrics, always re-inventing their sound. That is what I hope for, for this immensely talented band. As for THIS release, the seductive voice of Ben Trokan over the tight (sometimes dreamy, see Descender or Price & Style), catchy melodies makes for a fantastic 5 star debut.

The lead singer might as well be doing a Britt Daniel impersonation. Poor man's version of SPOON. Also, the people who keep incorrectly saying "the Spoons", seriously, who are you kidding with ROHS is better? Granted some of their stuff has moments of brilliance and is defintely better than most mainstream garbage it just doesn't do anything for me.

Great album, great live performance!.......2005-12-18

Have had the pleasure of hearing and seeing this band live... None of the previous reviews mention that they were discovered and picked up by Scratchy Records, the label of James Iha, (of the Smashing Pumpkins). Whether you've heard them on NPR, Carson Daly, or other, clearly, this is an up and coming sound and a band NOT to miss.

A must have in your collection!.......2007-01-03

I backed my way into this CD - I heard the choir singing background on a song that's on Brian Stokes Mitchell's CD, and wanted to learn more about them. So I googled the Broadway Inspirational Voices and came up with this CD. I ordered it, and my musical world was transformed. I gave the CD to my choir director, and our choir performed 2 songs from the CD for the holiday services, much to the delight of our congregation. Everyone I have recommended this CD to has fallen in love with it. The arrangements, the singing, and the overall musicianship are at such a high level that you simply MUST HAVE this in your collection. You will NOT be disappointed!!!

I ordered this CD this year after listening to a sample (Joy to the World). I knew I had to have this CD. When it arrived and I listened to it, I was just amazed. Michael McElroy and his crew did an outstanding job on this compilation. The music is awesome. The singing is wonderful. EVERY song is simply amazing, and it causes you to sing along with them. I simply enjoy the fact that they sing the traditional songs and put a little twist to them, but easy to catch on to. If you buy this CD, you will simply enjoy it very much. One of the absolute best. I give it 10 stars!!!!

Great Joy has quickly become my favorite Christmas album! The Broadway Inspirational Voices bring so much energy and well, joy, to every song. It also features solos by some great Broadway performers (Gavin Creel, Billy Porter, etc.).

I read about this CD in the NY Daily News, and ordered a copy. WOW! The CD is literally thrilling, like being at a live concert! Some big time singers make up this CD, Billy Porter has an amazin solo, Gavin Creel's voice is as beautiful as any, Michael McElroy is a genius! If you buy one Christmas CD, this is the one. Beautiful, powerful, and true to the title, it has brought me great joy. I am getting a few more for gifts, this is truly something to share in this season.
