Customer Reviews:
The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26
I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.
Please buy it.
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

She's back. After more drama than even this unshy Big Bad Mama might have wanted, it seems as if Foxy Brown has pulled back from the abyss. Of course, on her first album in three years (since the disappointing Chyna Doll), Foxy's rhyme skills haven't gotten any better or worse--she still exhibits the focused monotone that first got her noticed in 1995 on LL Cool J's "I Shot Ya." Broken Silence can't be called a revelation, but it does showcase a less ill, more introspective Na Na. Gratuitous battle rhymes are still very much in effect, but the effort she's made to explore her recent painful experiences has resulted in some pretty compelling material. Foxy explains her position, pointedly making thinly veiled references to the many industry beefs and relationship problems that have made her name prime fodder for the rumor mills. Many of the best tunes found here, including the ragga raw "Oh Yeah," are heavy on the reggae vibe, but, quiet as it's been kept, Foxy's been exploring her dancehall roots for a while now. Broken Silence may not be the best we'll ever hear from Ms. Brown, but you can definitely call it a comeback. --Rebecca Levine

luv it so much gotta get it again.......2007-02-21
I love this album so much, I wore it out in 2001 and up until it was stolen. This will be my second time purchasing it.
The ILLEST!!! Fox we need you.......2006-10-06
I just pulled this out looking for something different to listen too,MAN I had forgot how DOPE this lp is. This is by far the best female rap album I've ever had the pleasure of owning. And one of very few albums I can listen to from start to finish. My personal favorite was "The Letter" talk about letting your fans in on what you have gone through. It doesnt get an more personal than this track. I can't even list off the dopest track because they are all hot. There is not a bad song on her. I cant wait until is graces us with a new one.
Foxy Brown, The Illest Female in Tha Rap Game.......2006-09-25
Also tha sexiest. 4real. This album was the best out of all her albums. This is what the definition of real rap is. Tha only thing that could be changed is how she talks about Prada, Christian Diore, n other material brand names. N she talk about her na-na, but I got no problem wit dat. Id put my face in it anyday. Now just cuz I like her dnt mean Im not feelin Lil' Kim or Remy Ma. Lil' Kim CD The Naked Truth was real good, n Remy Ma CD Theres Somethin about Reamy Based on A True story was good too. But Foxy Brown is my favorite hands down. I can't wait till she drop Black Roses.
Buy This CD................
Foxy's best yet!.......2006-09-04
What I like most about this album is Brown's return of her Trini roots on several of the dancehall inspired tracks. "Oh Yeah", "Saddest day", and "Tables wil turn" had nice dancehall chorus that made the songs pop.
Every song on this cd is worth listening too which is really rare with most cd's these days. This is Foxy's first album that can be compared to Lil Kim's Hardcore in terms of content and arrangement.
This is the BK princess I've been waiting to hear and i'm really feelin "come fly with me" featuring sizzla. i hope she continues to kick it up a notch on this next cd.
CLASSIC!.......2006-08-08
This album was so slept on. Maybe lack of promotion being the cause?!? This is definetly a classic and one that I have been listening to since its release and will continue to listen to for years to come.

Hymns in the Anglican Tradition Beautifully Performed.......2007-01-24
This is one more example of hymns in the Anglican Tradition, sung by the always excellent choir of King's College, Cambridge. It is a splendid example of the sonorous sound of men and boys, accompanied by a classic English organ and, for the quieter hymns, the gentle sound of harp. All the familiar hymns and hymn tunes are here. You will not regret adding this CD to your collection.
Very inspiring music.......2005-07-06
I always enjoy listening to this Cd and particularly because of the orchestra and mellifluous choir. I especially enjoy: A Mighty Fortress, Come Down, O Love Divine, Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, and Thine Be The Glory. Some of the selections are soft such as "The Lord's My Shepherd" and "Drop, Drop, Slow Tears." Still, it is a fabulous selection and one of my favorites.
Great English Hymns.......2005-02-10
This was one of my Christmas gifts and I really looked forward to listening to it. I had just visited King's College, Cambridge back in August and really liked it--you should try to make it out there if possible.
Anyway, this CD was great to listen to. Some hymns are scored for orchestral accompaniment, choir and organ, while the majority of tracks are just for choir and organ.
Recorded in the King's College Chapel (the front cover has a great shot of the ceiling's trademark "fan" stone carving), the hymns are pure English sound--boys' treble voices along with men's changed voices singing with a pure, clean, straight tone. It's very sweet-sounding.
The hymns chosen are also great; "Be Thou My Vision," an Irish classic, appears along with "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "All People That on Earth Do Dwell," and "Morning Has Broken" (later recorded by Cat Stevens).
The singing isn't especially elaborate--they're just simple hymns. They're orchestrated very well, however, and they sound great.
Religious people may prefer these recordings more in general--these are Christian hymns after all--but I think it's a great recording and is worth listening too, especially if you enjoy that English sound!
Buy this CD!.......2004-09-20
Having heard Kings College Choir twice, in the flesh, at Kings, this CD is a wonderful example of what you might hear. If you can't make it to Cambridge, buy this CD. It contains many of the old favorites and also some hymns that are not found on other English hymn CD's.
English Choirs.......2002-12-18
Having visited many Cathedrals throughout the UK and listened to the enchanting voices of the boys choirs, I was disappointed with this particular rendering from Kings. Perhaps I am biased in that I enjoy the organ background or no background but the use of a full blown orchestra, in my opinion, tended to overwhelm and was totally unnecessary and somewhat grandoise choice on the part of Stephen Cleobury. Apart from that, much of the music was excellent. In comparison with other CD's from Kings, this was disappointing.

It's good to have the clean-vowelled, fresh-voiced Cambridge Singers back in action with composer John Rutter, who demonstrates once again his considerable talents as a choral director. Here, he also had his work cut out arranging 15 of the tracks (and composing one other). Divided up into various categories, such as "the Eucharist" and "folk hymns," this album will delight the confirmed hymn enthusiast, provided that he or she doesn't insist on the pure, as-written product. Rutter's reworkings range from the bold and brassy (occasionally deliciously over the top--what would Martin Luther have thought of the naughtiness in "A mighty fortress is our God"?) to those of harp-accompanied simplicity, not least in the charming lines of "Be thou my vision." Several tasteful descants are models of their kind. There are some surprises at which to chuckle. For example, not the expected brass and organ job on "We plough the fields and scatter," but a dainty, tripping harp accompaniment to the familiar melody, such as Haydn might have wedded to a Scottish folksong. Occasional numbers might be too saccharine for some tastes, but there are cunningly placed samples of Gregorian chant, Tallis, and Gibbons to provide contrast and cleanse the palate. --Andrew Green

What can I say !.......2007-02-15
Having listened to this twice... It is difficult to find words for something so Glorious. It doesn't almost hurt, but I almost exploded in heavenly rapture several times.
You will need to get two. It is not music that you will want to keep to yourself.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-02
'The hymns heard on this disc span over 15 centuries of the history of Christian Europe, and have been chosen simply to make up a varied program which can be pleasant to hear.' Some items are accompanied by organ, some by harp where a lighter sound was more appropriate. Some are unaccompanied as in the Gregorian hymns, and five of the grandest hymns are given festival arrangements using brass, timpani, percussion and organ. Although the perspective of this album is Anglican,it must be noted that the Anglican hymn tradition has been notably eclectic. Hymnody is forever changing. 'This album does NOT attempt to reflect the most recent changes-the emergence of pop and folk-influenced worship songs and choruses has been well taken care of elsewhere, and time alone will tell whether there is any lasting worth in this most drastic upheaval of worship style.' Therefore, it is timely to reflect upon the immense riches of hymns built up over so many centuries, when they are at great risk of neglect. John Rutter has produced an amazing number of arrangements as well as original songs, and they are all first-rate. Choirs throughout the world (who are skilled enough to sing them)take great pleasure in working with his selections, and audiences, regardless of listening experience seem to enjoy them. They are tuneful, clever and unusual!!!
The Cambridge Singers number : 10 female sopranos,2 male and 4 female altos, 7 tenors and 8 basses. They sing extremely well with clear consonents and well-shaped vowels and plenty of gusto. I miss the boy sopranos that usually sing in the British choirs, but that's only a personal preference, and it surely is not Rutter's preference, because I have never known him to make use of them. A truly inspiring recording, nonetheless.
Another Rutter Keeper!.......2003-02-17
Rutter has won many fans throughout the world for his passionate, creative yet tasteful contributions to church music. Here is a hymn collection with several traditional choices along with Rutter originals.
Several comprise Rutter's remakes, which is most cases are very diginified and not at all distractive to the thrust of the original. The orchestration is superb, and the Cambridge Singers of course provide outstanding choral might.
Well worth consideration to the church music collection.
worship of god made mostglorius in this cd.......2002-04-30
i was 1st introduced to john rutters music on a radio program... when i 1st heard the arrangement of christ the lord is risen today presented in this cd i pictured a grand celebration of the solemn mass of the resurection of our lord and pictured in particular the grand procession i pictured this being celebrated... this hymn and cd does as best as humanly possible represent the great glory of god and does as its title suggests sing with the heavens and for you fellow traditionalists this is a strongly recomended cd
Heavenly Music.......2001-10-15
The hymns of SING, YE HEAVENS represent 1500 years of music in the Christian church. Pure and rich are these hymns by the Cambridge Singers with their perfect diction that leaves nothing for improvement and their tone quality that envelops the listener. The beauty of the harp, the organ, and the brass adds to the pleasure this CD brings to the listener's ear and heart.

Very rockin' CD.......2002-08-03
The Nelson brothers have done it again, and harder!! This CD rocks! The songs all have feeling (some fun, like why oh why). Definetely a great album to add to any collection.
You Won't Be Silent For Long..........2001-12-13
The Nelson Brothers have been one of musics most dedicated duos. They never seem to give up, despite the treatment they have received from the industry. This album is a great example of the calibre of musicians that the Nelsons are. This is their fourth album, and it is a great album to be blunt. From the opening cords of "Ghostdance," through to the secret track conclusion of "Feelings of Love," this is a very solid release. It took a bit of time to reach North America, but the wait was very worth it. Standout tracks include "L.O.V.E. Me Not(a good rock song)," "You Talk Too Much(very melodic)," "What About Me(a nice ballad)," and "Running Out of Time(a rocker)." The cover of "Love Me Today," is decent, but doesn't compare to the original. As well, the bonus of "Feelings of Love," proves rather enjoyable. It helps to show the boys were talented little lads. This is a great CD that I'm sure any music lover could enjoy. One listen and you surely won't keep this CD's greatness silent. It is that good.
Nelson broke the silence.......2001-07-13
While this is not my favorite Nelson album, I still love it. I have been a fan from the begining, and I will be a fan 'til the end and beyond. Musical styles change, both mainstream and within the artist or group. We don't always change with them, but for one of my favorite groups of all time, I will change, whichever direction they go. I am a fan of music, not just one style, all of it. It is all in the interpretation. I would have to say if you love the Nelsons than get the album.
They should have remained silent on this one.......2001-03-24
I was a HUGE Nelson fan as a teenager. After the Rain is one of my favorite CDs of all time and I eagerly anticipated its follow up. It came in the form of "Because They Can", an adult-oriented pop album that wasn't what I wanted to hear at the time. I wanted to hear "Imaginator," a CD I read about in all the rock magazines. Skip ahead a few years and "Imaginator" was finally released in Japan. It was quickly followed by "Silence is Broken." While "Imaginator" rates as an instant Nelson classic, "Silence" should have never seen the light of day. Why you ask? Because it's nothing but a bunch of Imaginator session throwaways and a couple of forgettable new songs. Sorry Matthew and Gunnar - I think you are very talented, but this album was a huge disappointment. I remember reading about many of these songs in updates in "Metal Edge" in 1992. Songs like "Sunset Strip" are easily forgettable; "Tears of Pain" is an over-cliche heavy metal ballad; "Love Me Today Part II" is a disgrace to the beautiful acoustic version on BTC; "Why oh Why?" did you record such a crappy song; and "Ghostdance" is boring. "Say it Isn't So" is one of the only good songs on this CD. "You Talk to Much" isn't too bad; and "L.O.V.E. Me Not" rocks rather hard. I am glad I didn't buy this CD for $35 as an import. I lucked out and found a used copy of it. If I paid full price I would have cried. If you want good Nelson, buy After the Rain, Because They Can, Imaginator, or the new, and oh, so much better CD than this one, "Life."
Silence Must Be Broken.......2000-07-01
Nelson is a pop rock duo by Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, twin sons of late pop star Rick Nelson. Their debut album After The Rain became a supearhit and made lots of hits.
After releasing their second album Yes We Can they parted with Geffen to seek for what they really want to do. This is their fourth album released in 1998 but never released in the U.S. Now, finally the album sees the light of day.
This album is a great hard pop rock work probably one of the best melodic rock releases in 1998. Say It Isn't So, its first single became #1 in Japanese pop chart, it is Bon Jovi styled fun pop rock. Why Oh Why sounds like another great pop rock band Enuff'Z Nuff typical Beatles styled rock. You Talk Too Much, Sunset Strip and Running Out Of Time might scare Danger Danger, Mr.Big and Poison, series of roller coaster fun pop rocks. Silence Is Broken and Tears of Pain gives melancholic moody feel found in great melodic rock makers such as Harem Scarem. Also hidden after the Love Me Today Part 2 is a secret track when Nelson twins made their first recording as their 10th birthday present from their parents.

Foxy breaking her Silence is golden.......2007-07-05
You can tell when an artist put strong effort into an album because you'll be able to feel it straight through. Case in point with Foxy's Broken Silence. Her first album, Ill Na Na I enjoyed. Chyna Doll not so much but this album was a huge improvement. For starters we all know that she was going through a lot of stress before she started working on this album. On here she adresses how she tried to commit suicide by trying to overdose on medication and she talks about her relationships as well as her beefs. She does most of her revealing on the track The Letter featuring Ronald Isley. The track is was already great but Ronald Isley on the chorus was the icing on the cake. B.K Anthem should have been the anthem for Brooklyn seeing that it is one of the best anthems to a city ever made. Foxy keeps it true to her reggae roots and Tables Will Turn, Na Na Be Like and Run Them(both Tables Will Turn and Run Dem are featuring Baby Cham). In the most unexpected matchup I've ever heard at the time, Mystikal and Foxy Brown on Bout My Paper was magic plus that laidback beat was crazy. Another song that was crazy is the Capone and Nore assisted Run Yo S***. 730 by itself goes in the classic file as Foxy throws some sharp barbs at Natina of Blaque and Lil Kim. Hood Scriptures is another crazy track with Foxy spitting over an exotic beat. Oh Yeah with Spragga Benz was a pretty good single and the end track Broken Silence is beautiful(do you notice how every song that sampled Broken Wings sound better than Broken Wings?). Bottom Line: Foxy Brown poured her heart and soul into Broken Silence and the end results is a beautiful classic. She was so into it so much that you can tell that she was crying on certain tracks(Broken Silence and The Letter). All in all it was a excellent effort and is her most slept-on album(check the record sales if you think Im kidding). Standout tracks: FALLIN, OH YEAH, B.K ANTHEM, THE LETTER, 730, TABLES WILL TURN, HOOD SCRIPTURES, BOUT MY PAPER, RUN YO S***, SADDEST DAY and BROKEN SILENCE.
FOX SO HOT!.......2001-07-31
Without a Doubt, this has got to be one of the BEST CD's ever by any female mc. Foxy is back and ready to re-claim her Thrown! I don't care what all the Haters and Nay-sayers have to say, Foxy is truly a talented young female. She has really amazed me with the work that she's done on this album. The whole CD is Blazin Hot, but the real prime cutz are "Oh Yeah", "Tables Will Turn" and "Saddest Day". Anyone thats into real "Hip-Hop/Rap" will love this CD and will NOT be dissapointed...so go get this joint NOW!
CLASSIC.......2001-07-31
With foxy brown dealing with her personal problem in the past 2 years she still seem to put her BEST in this ablum also without her Clyde be her side she still manage to make 17 track that she would say she keeps it so HOOD

Album Description
A uniquely eclectic and competent blend of classic American pop/rock from two masters of songwriting. 'The Silence Is Broken' traverses the highs(the title track) and lows(the vulnerable ballad 'What About Me') with the seamless fluidity that can only come from years of studio sessions and touring. Standard jewel case. 1999 release.
