Examining the state of R&B as of a few months before the mid-1998 release of MTV Jams is this album's business--a trade it takes care of very well, thanks. Ten hit singles (and one ringer, "Black Butterfly," included as a savvy promo device for a new artist named Grenique) run the gamut from Busta Rhymes's deceptively cool "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" and Erykah Badu's fool-killing "Tyrone" to the hip-hop gospel of "Stomp" by God's Property and Joe's anti-mythical "Don't Wanna Be a Player." The requisite amount of '70s inspiration is here, but most of these artists make something truly their own out of what they're working with. --Rickey Wright
