Score composer Howard Shore has informed this first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with his distinctly modern sensibilities. Revolving loosely around a brief, heroic brass theme, this epic is infused with a powerful rhythmic thrust and a musical range that encompasses centuries (from the Renaissance pastoralism of "Concerning Hobbits" to the fiery, Prokofiev-influenced drama of "A Knife in the Dark"). Key to the score's sense of mystery and magical place are the rich choral passages that are interspersed throughout, some so ominously gothic they make The Phantom Menace's "Duel of the Fates" sound almost sunny by comparison. Enya's contributions ("The Council of Elrond" and the song "May It Be") add a sense of organic tranquility, but it's Shore's Wagnerian-scaled orchestral score that should long be cherished by admirers of film music and hobbits alike. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
The music is good but the movie is better.......2007-04-10
I really enjoyed the 3 series of The Lord of the Rings movie so I wanted the music. The soundtracks are good but if you like the movie the soundtracks watch the movie. They remind you of certain parts in the movie like the song Concerning Hobbits. The song is whimsical. Enyna has a great voice, very haunting. The Ring Goes South is another favorite of mine. I can enjoy these soundtracks as classical or dramatic music. I bought them because I loved the Lord of the Rings which has many similarities to Braveheart. Bravery, courage, strength, honesty, selflessness, love and other good human qualities people try to attain and admire them in the people and movies they view.
A grand sountrack..........2007-01-10
One of Howard Shore's best soundtracks around. The music is strong enough to tell its own separate story apart from FOTR. You will never tire of the heart-pounding excitement from The Bridge of Kazaad-Dum track.
Lord of the Rings Original Soundtracks, films 1 and 3.......2006-11-08
Having made an earlier mistake of buying 2 C.D.'s which were not original soundtrack, I can truthfully say these are the best. If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, look no further - no one does it better than The London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer Howard Shore. You will be back in Middle Earth reliving all those wonderful scenes. I bought only The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King from Amazon.com because I already had the Two Towers from Amazon.co.uk and I would recommend all three - magical.
Awe inspiring!.......2006-10-02
What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. I think this first one is my favorite of the three "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the lighter moments, like the sweet, simple hobbit theme, with the grander and more menacing sections of the music. (That despite the fact that said hobbit theme begins exactly like the first phrase of the Protestant hymn "This Is My Father's World," which prompts me to think of the hobbits trouping off to Sunday school every time I hear it. But now when I hear the hymn, I think of Lord of the Rings, so I suppose all's fair!) What impressed me most as I watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" was how scary the music was when the hobbits were being pursued. Those relentless drums and eerily screaming drums made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even though I knew the story like the back of my hand and knew for a fact that the poor little heroes would manage to escape. But the music truly made me wonder otherwise ... Now that's good composition! And the fact that the filmmakers chose to include background music in so many of the scenes, almost continuously ... well, that's just good filmmaking! The other impressive thing about Howard Shore's score is how the voicing and repeating motifs tie the whole thing together, like the finest of symphonies. The total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Two Towers" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for more seminal soundtracks, try John Williams' defining scores for the "Star Wars" series and Basil Poledouris's spectacular score for the original "Conan the Barbarian."
It is the best of the three CDs!!!.......2006-09-10
For me, the music of the first sequel is my favourite since this is also the sequel that I prefer in the trilogy (I remember being blown away by the quality of this movie, the actors, the setting, the action scenes, the special effects, the moving relationships between all the characters and of coourse the music)
I think that the other CDs are a bit repetitive once you've got this one, even if I still like the music of the second soundtrack 'The Two Towers'. As for the 3rd sequel, I seldom listen to it as there is only one track that I like, 'The Return of the King'.
Now, this first CD of the trilogy is actually very good. Thanks to Enya, it is haunting and the songs are beautiful. There are a few eery but melodious songs like 'The Council of Elrond', 'Lothlorien', 'May it Be'. I love the change of tempo, the balance between fast and slow movements in 'A Knife in the Dark', 'Flight to the ford', and 'Amon Hen' which is my favourite piece (the Death of Boromir) with the oboe sound mixed with the beat of the drums and finaly the haunting voice of the singer. Track 17 is also worth listening. I like this CD because you've got different tempos and melodies and Anya is a great singer to me. But I also enjoy listening to Emiliana Torrini's song 'Gollum's Song'in the second soundtrack...

The composers Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu might not be the names that first spring to mind when love songs are mentioned, yet this fascinating collection gives us a taste of what delights we have been missing. They range from seven Moravian folk songs, collected by Janácek at the turn of the century, to songs written by Martinu in the U.S. in 1942. There's also early Martinu--including songs he collected in Slovakia in 1920--plus the world-premiere recording of Songs for a Friend of My Country, a cycle he wrote in France in 1940 on his way to America. All of these songs are of interest in giving us another aspect of each composer's work; most have much more to offer. Many are achingly lovely, especially those by Dvorák--including his Op. 2, a reworking of four songs from a cycle he had written almost 20 years earlier, and Love Songs, a revision of eight songs from the same cycle. "Good night, my darling," from his 1886 cycle In Folk Tone, is worth the price of this CD alone. Czech mezzo Magdalena Kozená, who put together the program, sings with pure, attractive tone. Graham Johnson is her excellent accompanist. --Richard Fawkes
Customer Reviews:
On the Subject of Intelligent and Sensitive Recitals.......2005-05-19
Combing the recorded literature to find CDs that showcase singers who not only own brilliant vocal gifts but who also possess the intelligence to program recordings of lesser known works in a sequence that makes for intelligent recitals, it is becoming more obvious that there are many singers who opt for purity of purpose rather than 'salesmanship' of careers in the PR arena. Magdalena Kozená is one of these gifted singers whose intelligence and sensitivity match her physical and vocal beauty.
LOVE SONGS is a tastefully selected panorama of lesser-known songs by Kozená's fellow countrymen (Czech) Antonín Dvorák, Leos Janácek, and Bohuslav Martinu. And while many of the Dvorák and Janácek songs have been occasionally heard in recitals, the Martinu "Songs for a Friend of My Country", an exquisitely beautiful work written in 1940, here receives its World Premiere recording. Kozená's voice is in prime condition for these songs and she is ably accompanied by pianist Graham Johnson. The special flavor of these Slavic emotions and songs has rarely been so well captured.
But over and above the beauty of Kozená's performance of these neglected masterpieces shines the glow of her sensitive programming. Recordings such as these are rare and should be included in the libraries of those who appreciate the lieder genre. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05
Lovely.......2004-03-25
This is a beautifully performed selection of Czech lieder. Kozena has a lovely voice and sings with precision and nicely modulated emotion. The accompanying pianist, Graham Johnston, is excellent. Despite the title, not all these songs are love or romantic songs but all are well worth hearing. The selection of songs is excellent. Different listeners will prefer different songs. For me, the highlight of this recording are the rarely heard Martinu songs, many of which exhibit the lyrical aspect of his compositional style. Recommended strongly.
A Beautiful Disc.......2002-01-06
This is simply a magnificent recording. I like it better every time I put it on. The voice is fresh, supple, and expressive. I even find myself trying to learn some of the Czech words (from the translation in the booklet) they sound so nice. Both Kozena and the brilliant piano contributions by Graham Johnson are faithfully caught on the recording. There is enough variety and contrast that one doesn't tire in the least (over the generous 67 minutes of playing time) of hearing these playful, sometimes poignant, songs. One of the best discs, in terms of programming, performance, and sound quality, of the past couple of years.
A stunning burst onto the world stage.......2001-12-17
Magdalena Kozena is suddenly known around the world, thanks to this stunning disc of 42 lieder from her Czech homeland. Most of the songs are short - some come in under a minute, the longest 3-4 minutes. Each is a little gem and many have never been recorded before.
Kozena's voice is sheer delight. She does have resonances in her voice which are reminiscent of her compatriot, Lucia Popp, but is certainly a mezzo - although she has chosen her repertoire well so we hear no strain at the top. Her low resonances are delightful and consistent with her head voice. To compare Kozena's voice to that of the late diva (Popp), it is more pure, more consistent in tone from top to bottom, and doesn't have so much of the `squeezey' quality which Popp used to great effect in evincing the passion of her characters. Kozena can empty her voice of vibrato or let it out rich and full, and uses all her vocal resources to great effect in contrasting the individual songs. She has astoundingly mature lieder-singer's technique for such a young singer.
This recording rightly won a Gramophone award this year. Kozena deserves all the accolades she receives for this - doubtless all listeners will develop their own favourites from these delightful miniatures.
Wonderful songs, and a singer with great potential.......2000-10-08
What a wonderful, carefully thought out CD! Kozena obviously revels in these rarely performed songs by Dvorak, Martinu, and Janacek, and Johnson accompanies with his usual ease and sensitivity. What a pity the piano is balanced distantly -- we hear little of Johnson's variety of touch and dynamics. As for Kozena, she is obviously an intelligent musician with a voice of great potential. It is qutie beautiful as it is, yet the colour is still rather pale. Yes, there is something of the late Lucia Popp's timbre, yet it has little of Popp's depth and range of colour. BBC Legends released a CD of Popp a year ago which includes three Dvorak songs also sung by Kozena. The differences are quite marked -- while Kozena's timbre and interpretation suggests a dreamy yet earnest youth, Popp brings out an autumnal glow and a sharp pain that pierces at least this listener's heart. Kozena has started a wonderful career. Only time will tell how her voice will develop. I do hope it goes in the direction of Popp's unique lyric timbre. No one could ever equal Popp (perhaps it's obvious by now that Popp is my favorite singer of all time), but perhaps Kozena will become something of Popp's heir, while still being her own person. I hope so. But her musicality is not in question. Let's keep our ears open!

THIS SONG SUCKS!.......2007-04-18
I played this song and it haunts my sleep. This is the single worst song written in the galaxy! DOn't spend money on this! Don't play it at all! Run away!
Imagine my suprise.......2000-09-14
In a certain nostalgic yearning to relive high school, I searched for Jack Stamp(a favorite of our little symphonic band). Imagine my suprise when I found it AND recognized most of the songs AND recalled just how hard I had to strike those chimes. I am in heaven. Now, if only I could find my yearbook.......
For a private-eye, Stamp delivers!.......1998-12-20
Jack Stamp outdoes himself in this delightful anthology of musical achievement. At the end, however, I found myself yearning. When will Mr. Stamp realize that fighting crime and musicology just don't mix? His music is wonderful-- especially the gripping Gavorkna Fanfare-- but his calling is detective work. But until he realizes this, I suppose we shall continue to expect more wind ensemble music of this calibre. There are worse fates.

Album Description
As much as an open invitation as it is a work of art, Azure Wonder & Lust compels the listener to accompany Annette on a journey which delves into the subconscious and conscious heart and mind, in search of spiritual and metaphysical truths. A sharing of intimate personal experience yields expressions of sorrow and joy, felt mutually by artist and audience alike.
Azure Wonder & Lust generates a spontaneous passion in search of answers and meanings. An intricate mixture of musical styles oscillates throughout the album as a variety of emotions are explored in attempts to gain the necessary strength and inspirational hope for fulfilling one's human needs.
Magic relates the blessings of personal freedom with the potential for it's abuse, depicting the dilutions and distractions which materialism and popular culture can exert on the human psyche.
Dive proposes a relationship between the love of nature with the love of one another, describes the concept of universal love while affirming this as an intrinsic and innate desire.
I Don't Want It Anymore exposes the personal desires which distract and prevent one from realizing what would truly bring joy into one's life.
Black Man's Daughter is a celebration of her own multi-racial heritage, Annette challenges us to recognize our own racial heritage and confront any existing racial prejudice.
Let the World Go Away was written as a eulogy to her parents, a tribute to two passionate, courageous individuals who proudly stood fast to their values and beliefs.
The propulsive heart of Azure Wonder & Lust lies within a voice from which emanates a tantalizing style of melodic intensity. By openly expressing her passion and exposing her vulnerability, Annette implores the listener to find the courage to do the same.

Album Description
I began composing music at the time when my daughter and I moved to a new city to start a new life. Initially , I just wanted to express my inner voice through music of my own making. Since then, I have not stopped composing and now, the result is this album.
Many people have asked about my music but I find it so difficult to explain the meaning of my pieces. All I know is that the inspiration comes from deep within my heart and the music is played with my spirit and my soul .
It has been a long journey for me . Expressing this in words is difficult but through music , I am able to tell my story, the story of " A Woman's Journey "

Customer Reviews:
The most beautiful original music I've ever heard.......2005-06-28
After listening to the selections you have from your album, I was so captivated by the artistry and mood expressed in each selection that I simply wanted to hear more of your beautiful music. Your mastery of the Bosendorfer brought out the delicate resonances of this legendary instrument. Your music is so expressive and deeply spiritual - it conveys so many thoughts and emotions that I couldn't take it all in on the first preview - I must listen to it again and again. Thank you for bringing your music to the world and thank you for bringing it to me.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-08-07
"A Woman's Journey" is the recording debut of Yiling Huang. Classically trained in Taiwan, Austria, and the US, Huang's music is very structured and finely-crafted. The album was produced by Paul Speer (formerly with David Lanz), and performed on a Bosendorfer piano. Most of the sixteen pieces are quite short and very classical in feeling, and each tells a slightly different story. Some of these are about events in Ms Huang's life, experiences in nature, and a very deep spiritual relationship with a soul mate or loved one. Several stories are set in the 19th century, and the influence of that period of music is very apparent. All of the selections are solo piano, and a few have nature sounds woven into the music (water, birds, rain).
The title track opens the CD. Realizing that we all have a different journey through life, there are also many common emotions we all experience. This piece is a musical reflection of many of these emotions, from tender to turbulent. "Riversong" is very interesting in that it makes a lot of harmonic changes that really aren't expected, much as a river can be unpredictable - a lovely piece! "Interlude 1" is a bittersweet piece that has a lovely melody flowing over an arpeggiated left hand. Reflective and emotional, I like this one a lot, too. "Freedom" tells the story of a 19th century woman who is determined to leave her unhappy life behind. Energetic and moving, you can sense the determination as this woman packs her bags, mounts her horse, and rides off to follow her dreams. "New Horizon" is my favorite track. Strong and hopeful, there is the feeling of elation that comes with a new beginning and a fresh start. I also really like "Rain Song," a lively but gentle appreciation for the beauty and melody raindrops create.
"A Woman's Journey" is a very promising debut!
Everyone in our family love Yiling's music!.......2004-05-27
Everyone in our family love Yiling's music. I listen to this CD in my car, on the way to work, on going home. The soothing music make the worse traffic seem tolerable.
Our son Andrew listens to her music going to sleep every night. He said it makes him have good dreams.
Thanks for making such beautiful music for all of us.

A Woman's Journey.......2004-05-26
"MUST HAVE!!!" A Woman's Journey by Yiling Huang is an amazing piano performance CD. Although, she is an unknown artist, yet she expresses all her emotions, like passion, joy, grief, hate, love, rage and excitment, etc... through her music. I was very touched by listening to her CD. I've been listening to it everyday, over and over, and believe it or not, I've never been bored of it. I'd rather addicted to her music. I became a big fan of Yiling Huang!!!
