This is the finest collection of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly that I have ever heard!!! It is the best selection of hits especially if you are a true fan or even if you are not. Any and everyone would love it. I am definitely enjoying it. I am from the south so of course "Southern Girl" is my favorite song.

Seriously, we get some smokin' slow jams and other hard funk numbers. My favorite has got to be Joy and Pain with Kurtis Blowe...I'm not a big rap fan but still love Kurtis' rap in the middle. I also love While I'm Alone, Golden Time of Day and Before I Let Go with Woody Wood. Every song on the album is great, and it's perfect to listen to late at night, when the lights are low and you're working on your computer. It really helps get the mood going.
Whether you want to dance or chill, you've got it here.

I am definitely old school when it comes to my music and would recommend this CD. I saw Frankie Beverly and Maze in Indiana when Happy Feelins' came out (late '70's?), in Sacramento in 2002 and in New Orleans at the Essence Festival in 2004. They still sound just as great as the first time I heard them and I never tire of listening to this group. I also have their Back to Basics CD and Live in New Orleans DVD. They are always the last act at the Essence Festival each year and the audience gives mad props to them, which is much deserved.

Maze is a really good, really long-winded R&B band for the uninitiated. Trust me, this is some pretty funky stuff. You'll especially appreciate it if you listen to it with Parliament and/or Earth Wind and Fire. The best three songs are:
1. While I'm Alone
2. Joy and Pain (with Kurtis Blowe)
3. Before I Let Go (with Woody Wood)

Although just about every other song on this album is good. By the way, I'd recommend you buy this with "Millenium Collection Parliament" and "The Best of Earth Wind and Fire, Volume 1".

I was raised on Frankie Beverly and Maze and there is nothing like their music! My boyfriend and I have gone to see them live and their show is always jammin! This CD is one that stays in my cd player for days. Some of my faves are Golden Time of Day, While I'm Alone, Happy Feelins', etc. You gotta buy this CD! I have TWO..one for the care and one for the house! ahahaa =OD

I've always been a Huge Frankie Beverly&maze fan. this smooth collection is a Highlight&tribute to there Impact on R&B Music. they are Black Folks's Grateful Dead. ain't no other Act in R&B quite like Frankie beverly&Maze because they ain't even put out a Record in 15 years&Yet if they ever come to a Chocolate city that place will be Packed. these songs are all my jams&I enjoyed the arrangement they got here. this is a Very strong collection with smooth sounds.

If you are a serious "Frankie" fan, and even if you are not, this CD is a must for your collection. Most if not all of his most recognizable ballads are included, and it makes you think about your wonderful concert memories every time that you hear it. Maze is one of those groups that doesn't need to put out any new music because they have such a prolific catalog of classic party jams and "blue lights" ballads, but, if you had to have one CD that embodies the best of his ballad collection,...this is IT!! Anyone who has (repeatedly) seen Frankie and Maze perform live knows the quality and timelessness of these songs......don't even think about it,....BUY THIS ONE TODAY!

I think this collection is very good.Franky Beverly's voice is amazing.I love the arrangements of all the songs.Its something about Franky's voice that's just magical.My favorite songs on the cd are "Happy Feelings","We Are One","I Love You Much To Much",and "When You Love Someone".I'm telling you,this cd is the real deal.I totally recommend this cd to anybody.It is excellent.

How can you have a true Maze Slow Jam compilation without "Lady of Magic!" Not only that but where is "Golden Time of Day" and "While I'm Alone?" Those are classic, classic cuts and should be automatically included in any collection! Since some really great songs are missing from this CD, it is really closer to 3.5 stars than 4, but I couldn't bring myself to rate such a beautiful voice and hardworking group any less.

While funkified R&B orchestras of the late '70s and early '80s such as Earth, Wind & Fire and the Commodores made frequent appearances on the mainstream charts, Maze hold a special place in the hearts of nostalgic R&B fans because the San Francisco-based seven-piece (later eight-piece) band always stayed exclusive to its loyal core audience--the many thousands of mostly adult, mostly black, mostly working-class fans who made each of Maze's 10 albums gold without the help of a huge pop hit. Soul fans who heard about only the crossovers missed out on Maze's medium-funk grooves and the buttery-thick Philly-style vocals of featured performer/bandleader Frankie Beverly. Thankfully, the two-disc Anthology collects the singles that, depending on what neighborhood you grew up in, may never have made it as far as they should have. Covering, in chronological order, all of Maze's recordings for Capitol--from 1977's self-titled debut to 1986's Live in Los Angeles--Anthology provides just about all the Maze anyone short of a collector would need. Disc One is preferable, with its classic '70s soul ("While I'm Alone"), down-home grooves ("Workin' Together"), and gritty deep-fried jams ("Southern Girl"). Disc Two features their bigger R&B chart hits, such as the late-career high point "Back in Stride" and songs from the mid-'80s, when the band had overproduced its up-tempo stuff into a synth-damaged pulp ("Love Is the Key") and its slow songs into doctor's-office slush ("Your Own Kind of Way"). But whatever its shortcomings, Maze's Anthology gives us a new chance to discover a species of music endangered in today's new jack, studio-processed R&B world. and Maze are his offspring. All jokes aside, if you've ever been to a FB & Maze concert, you know what I'm talking about. This group has not made a studio album in more than a decade, yet continue to draw sold out crowds of dedicated followers wherever they play. If any argument for truly timeless music is to be made, let Maze be exhibit A. This double disc collection is well put together, featuring some of the most loved and well-known songs from the band. "While I'm Alone", "Southern Girl", "Joy And Pain" and "Back In Stride" are all featured alongside some of Frankies' more unsung gems like "Lovely Inspiration" and "Lady Of Magic". Tight does not begin to describe the ability of Frankie and the band's ability to bring the funk and soul full-tilt. Closing your eyes, you can almost imagine being there front row at a Maze concert where you are guaranteed to enjoy yourself. An ultimate showman, Frankie is every bit as good live as he is on record. One of my favorite songs "Golden Time Of Day" is a staple at one of his shows and the quintessential summertime songs. I can't tout this collection or FB & Maze enough. If you're hesitating, dont. Get this cd for your collection. You will not be sorry.

Whenever you are fortunate to listen to the "Anthology" by Maze/featuring Frankie Beverly, you will understand about the goings on of life. The "Joy & Pain", the "reasons" you try to love one more time. You will grow to understand the emotions of ones being and the purpose of expressing your feelings to that special someone. One of the greatest live performer in the history of music. When you leave after attending a Maze concert, you will find yourself driving yourself home without turning on the radio..... The songs will stay in your mind as well as in your heart. This is one group that I truly respect and love. All the songs on this anthology are well worth the time to listen to. So find yourself a quiet spot in your house, pour yourself a relaxing drink of your choice,play this musical collection and just enjoy a mind-blowing moment....!!!!

Yep, a wonderbread white chick from south GA, I get goosebumps every single time I hear Frankie Beverly's voice...he gets right under my skin and into my SOUL...!! I am living in the high desert and no one here knows what funk/soul/r&b is all about. I miss it, I crave it, I've about worn out all my tapes and cd's just to get my soul rush. Maze is one of the most NONtalked about groups, yet their music is absolutely top notch and I'm sorry I missed them in Las Vegas.. you just cannot go wrong with this group!!

I THINK IN HONOR OF THE 30th ANNIVERSARY. THEY SHOULD RE-ISSUE THIS CD IN IT`S ORIGINAL ALBUM FORMAT (2-CDS & EXTEND FORM DVD), WITH PROCEEDS GOING TO A RELIEF FUND IN NEW ORLEANS. TO ME THIS IS THE BEST LIVE R & B PERFORMENCE EVER.

This is the BEST live album I have ever heard - I got the vinyl double album years ago and still have it in my collection (I thank the posters who honestly state that the cd is edited and therefore not one that I'd add to my collection).

Frankie Beverly is one of the most underrated singer/songwriter/ performers ever in my book and even though he is pushing 60 yrs of age, he still puts on a better show than the slew of tween & twenty-something r&b male singers of today's generation. The band is TIGHT and whenever they perform in Philly, I am there with bells on!!

The great thing about this group & this album is the rapport that Frankie has with the crowd; the call & response portions where he lets the audience "sing" in his place and truly the energy that I as a listener can hear & feel just listening to this album.

I'm sure fans of this dynamic group already have this album in their collection and although I'm disappointed that the cd wasn't mastered directly from the album version, "newbies" still can't go wrong in adding it to their collection. This group really is the platinum standard of what an r&b band should be!!

Maze is a well ballanced group with a singer songwriter that
never went commercial. The band has stuck to what they feel,
rocking west coast R&B and silky soul.I live on the east coast
and the band doesn't play many shows out my way. If they ever
do,I will be the first ticket buyer and front and center at the
show.

I agree with the other writers that this is an excellent album by Maze.But I was also upset that they abridged the C.D. issue of this classic.They cut the INTRO,they cut the song YOU,and they cut one of my favorite songs on the album HAPPY FEELINGS.I wish they would put the album on C.D.the way it was originally released,UNABRIDGED!!!Because when Earth,Wind and Fire and The Commodores put their albums on C.D.'s they didn't cut them!!!So if they correct this problem,let me know I'll be the first to buy a copy!

A Solid CD with some terrific love songs, And you can get your groove on with the upbeat tune's (Love is the key) & (Right on time). This is just one of the 11 Gold album/cd's recorded by this great but under appreaciated band. Fan's of the group already know how they rock a live concert but what we don't know is why the music industry has never given them credit for their work. 11 straight Gold albums and hundreds of sold out live concerts should speak for them. Not one Grammy. Why ?

At a time when REAL Soul Music appeared to be going into decline, Frankie Beverly and Maze released this wonderful CD which was very well received. By itself, the gorgeous "Can't Get Over You" justifies buying the CD but there are other great songs here as well. Frankie Beverly is most certainly one of the greatest Soul singers of our time--but he is also criminally underrated. A classic CD to enjoy time and again (nearly 20 years after its original release it still sounds great!).

Silky Soul is a must have for any Maze lover. The songs and the music is so true to the silky style of Maze/Featuring Frankie Beverly. Some of the most soulful and sweetest lyrics I've ever been exposed to.

Maze featuring Frankie Beverly is unique soulful jazzy music that is not going to win over many Brittany Spears fans but should please anyone who likes well arranged funky 80's soul.Their somewhat Miles Davis like horn player really sounds superb on this release.The song "Mandela" is my favourite track being a harmonious call to release the then imprisoned South African leader with Beverlys' voice sounding passionate and emotive next to a beautiful chorus of backup singers.Joy and Pain is for me their finest hour, however this C.D.contains some fine moments also in spite of other reviews disparaging their mid 80's output.

you know, it is refreshing in this day and age to hear something like this. this is raw, down to the bone soul music in the DISCO ERA!!!! thank goodness there is no disco here. give me LADY OF MAGIC and WHILE I'M ALONE, and i am straight. the rest just relaxes me like country roads on that perfect day of departure.

I first heard this album in the fall of 1977. I immediately fell in love with it. While I still own it on vinyl, I have searched years to find this in a CD format. The entire album comes highly recommended for some good soulful, listening. Here are my favorite picks and why I have selected them. The very sensual "Lady of Magic" and "While I'm Alone" are to be unmatched. The wanting and longing that Frankie Beverly so evidently expresses on these two powerhouses can bring you to your knees. I am especially taken by the uptempo groove "YOU" because once again this man is speaking directly to the love of his life, which seems to be his only desire and focus in life. "Happy Feelings" is just that. In the air and everywhere, the feel good feeling is infectious! "Look At California"...Aahh now there's a song which implies California dreamin and Frankie's description of the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and sunshine in picture frame fashion, makes me wish I was there to experience it all with him. Absolutely, positively no artist can put it down like Frankie Beverly & Maze.

When I listen to Maze I literally go to another place. This music is so emotionally uplifting its like healing to the ears, and these brothers can play with the best of them. Where Ron Isley voice soars Frankie Beverly's sooths - and I love the fact that he writes all these great songs and plays rhythm guitar with such elegance. Bands like Maze will never be forgotten as long as I'm living. This is what real music is all about becauses there are so many different elements of music on this masterpiece and they excel on all of them. With each song flowing into the next it's d*mn near impossible to skip a track. My favorites - all of them - but really four song on this album should have been mega-hits "Happy Feelin's","Lady Of Magic You", and "Look At California" for an example. This is why they have such a solid fan base (which is mostly african-americans for some reason) but anyway this is a must have. I've got to go because I'm feeling the urge to give this masterpiece another listen.

At first glimpse, Avalon may seem like one more nice-boy-nice-girl quartet who looks angelic and sings with a similar sanctity. And hey, that's what they are. But what makes A Maze of Grace different is the underlying streetwise pop edge that pervades this 1997 release, which yielded three top contemporary Christian music singles. The opening "Testify to Love" is a great track that features solid harmonies, trademark guitar power chords, and a rock-solid backbeat. "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" contains an irresistible urgency, as does "Speed of Light," yet the group can slow it down masterfully, as with the ballad "Adonai." Comparisons to First Call are merited here and much credit should go to producer Charlie Peacock, who makes Avalon's second release something more than the usual fare. --Michael Lyttle

I love every song on this CD, like every other album that Avalon has released. "Testify To Love", their biggest smash hit ever, is NOT overrated--love it. I also enjoy listening to "A World Away" and "A Maze Of Grace", both of which are catchy and fun to sing to. "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" is in the top three for this album for me. "Adonai", founding member Nikki Hassman-Anders' huge ballad, is amazing, and the words truly show it. I loved her voice, and was sad to see her go. "Speed Of Light" and "The Move" are really cool! I love Jody's voice on "Speed Of Light". (He's my favorite member of the group). "Reason Enough", "Forgive + Forget", and "Dreams I Dream For You" also all earn 5 stars. Overall a spectacular job and definitely a CD that I would recommend!

This is my second Avalon cd I have bought,and I love it!The first one I got was "Oxygen",and this one,"A Maze Of Grace",is just as good!I think the group looks kinda weird on the cover of the box,but they have beautiful voices and AWESOME Christian songs!Here is a song guide for "A Maze Of Grace":
1.Testify To Love-I have heard this is Avalon`s all-time number one hit,and I certainly see why!This is a beautiful opening song and the group pulled it off terrificly!
2.A World Away-A great jumpy,dancy Christian song!I really like this one!Avalon sounds great singing it together!
3.A Maze Of Grace-I love the lyrics to this song!It also has a good beat to it!
4.Knockin On Heaven`s Door-Possibly my favorite on the whole cd!This song is AWESOME!You`ll love it!
5.Adonai-Beautiful,touching song that talks about our "Adonai"!Sends out a great message!
6.Speed Of Light-Get pumped up after the slow "Adonai" with this song!It has a cool,dancy feeling,and with the lyrics,you`ll be singing along in no time at all!
7.The Move-Reminds me of Jump5`s version of "We Are Family",except a more Christian song!You`ll like this one alot,and love the beat!
8.Reason Enough-Just as good and beautiful as "Adonai"!I love this song!It talks about how we should love the lord because when he died for us,that`s a "reason enough" to trust,love,and worship him!

5 out of 5 stars An awesome quartet with awesome melody.......2002-09-28

This is the first CD that I have bought from this talented group. I had heard diffferent songs of theirs on mixed CDs that I bought and I thought that I would try one of their albums.

I was incredible blessed by all the songs on this album. Their upbeat music and the harmony of their voices are great.

If I must choose a favourite then it would definitely be "Adonai". I have heard this song sung by Michael Card and it has always been a great blessing to me to worship our 'Adonai'.

'Testify to Love' and 'A Maze of Grace' are amazing as well and the beat to these songs are good enough to dance to.

It is difficult to comment on every song because each one has a beauty of it's own and is uplifting to listen to.

This album has convinced me that I need to add more of their albums to my Christian music collection.

This is a must for all collectors of good Christian music!!
