When you hear a Stax record, you know it's a Stax record: the urgent, passionate gospel inflections of the singer; the behind-the-beat horn arrangements; the prominent, pulsating rhythm section. It is the sound of South Memphis in the 1960s. Few labels have such an identifiable sound--or, for that matter, one that's as infectious. This four-disc collection gets right to the heart of the Stax sound, tracing its development from 1960 to 1975 and thus unveiling the development of modern soul music itself. The 98-song selection is wide and deep, with room for both international smashes and obscure curiosities. Disc one covers the best-known hits, but the highlight may be disc four, which is dedicated to incendiary live recordings and is where you can hear Rufus Thomas's "Do the Push and Pull" for more than five glorious minutes and hear Albert King break down his relationship troubles. The middle two discs fill in the gaps with lesser-known gems from famous artists and famous songs by lesser-known artists. Sure, any longtime Stax fan will quibble with a few of the song choices (and omissions), but that just proves how consistently rewarding the Stax output was. With packaging and annotation worthy of such indispensable music, The Stax Story will delight any fan of funk and soul. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

'The Stax Story' brings together most of the company's biggest selling singles along with a well-chosen sampling of rarities and an entire disc of live recordings made around the world, including a couple of previously unissued gems. The 4 discs trace the evolution of a truly American style from the exquisite simplicity of the firm's early output through the often-lavish innovations of the later years. In addition to its 98 scorching selections, box set includes a richly illustrated booklet featuring the commentary of Rob Bowman, Stax historian & author of the award-winning Soulsville U.S.A.- The Story of Stax Records.

4 out of 5 stars Long lasting music of the 60's from Stax.......2007-07-28

Together with my wife always been big fan of the Stax performers. Wasn't aware one can find still this music and even on CD. Over here in Europe, market is rather weak. Since I am working in the states I was happy to see the opportunities with the Amazon offers.
Just one word: GREAT

5 out of 5 stars Want a Piece of Music History?.......2006-04-24

Then buy this set of quality disks before the sun sets! (Sun Recording, Memphis has already set!) THIS IS THE true Memphis sound and one that many of us have tried to copy over the years. At the center of the Memphis sound are the several music pros in this set...if you get a chance, attend a Memphis Blues Festival held annually (at different dates and times) and puts all the rest to shame. This music was around a long time before Beal Street ever came on the scene and it's a real treat to sit in the clubs during Festival and watch who walks up from the audience and sits in...some well knowns, a lot of unknowns but don't let appearances fool you. It is a treat for me and likely for you to put one of these disks on, sit back in an easy chair and I defy you to not tap your foot and snap your fingers! This is music at it's finest........

5 out of 5 stars Ninety Eight Stars (Count 'Em...98) One For Every Great Hit.......2001-07-11

WOW, This is the real thing...The motherlode...Incredible!!! Sure the Complete Stax Volt Singles 6-CD box set gives you every single released up until Atlantic pulled out as their national distributor. The Atlantic Rhythm & Blues collection covers the years 1947-1974 and includes numerous artists of the late forties and fifties like Ruth Brown, Al Hibler, Big Joe Thorton, Lavern Baker and Ray Charles. Then there's the Rhino box set, Thirty Years of Rhythm and Blues, a great retrospective in that it crosses over numerous labels and artists. This is a great place to explore the diversity of styles covering all the great regional styles from Motown to Philly to Memphis.

But if your bent is hard driving, gut wrenching, R&B with a pinch of gospel and soul, then look no further. This collection is the bomb. With 98 (count 'em...98) bonifide super soul hits, this is positively essential for any collector. Five Stars just scratches the surface. This one should get 98 Stars (count 'em...98) one for every great single in this marvelous set.

5 out of 5 stars Stax Soul Necessity.......2001-02-18

This set provides a welcome alternative to the pricey Complete Singles Vols. 1-3 box sets. This set is four discs. The first disc contains 26 well known Stax hits. The second disc highlights the Atlantic distribution period 1960-68. It contains lesser known singles and album tracks. Disc 3 highlights the years Mid 1968-1973 with more obscure singles and album tracks. The last disc is a sort of a live "Best of the Stax/Volt Soul Revue". All four discs are filled to capacity which is a good value. The 64 page booklet is well annotated with chart positions and contains rare photos of lp covers and promo literature as well as photos of some of the artists included in the set. The set highlghts not only the tight playing of Booker T. & the MGs but also the excellent songwriting of the Stax writers including; the MGs, Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Eddie Floyd, Mack Rice et al. Highlights abound with Albert King, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, Carla Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, the Staple Singers and others. The lesser known cuts by the stars are just as good or better in some cases, than their hits. Some of the more obscure artists included such as the Mad Lads and Ollie & the Nightingales are highlighted with excellent cuts. Someone might have a quibble with the track selection but if so think about investing in cds by the individual artists or the much more expensive singles collections. This is an interesting and judiciously chosen sampler of one of the best soul/funk labels of the sixties and early seventies. If you like this set I highly recommend the "Otis: The Definitive Otis Redding" 4 cd box set on Rhino and "Time Is Tight" a 3 cd Booker T. & The MGs box set from Fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have.......2000-12-29

This is great. Period. If you're into soul & funk, you need this in your collection. It's got everything you want, and then some. The graphic design of the packaging is terrific, too.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

4 out of 5 stars Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite "Born to Do It", but close!!.......2006-10-22

I just want to say, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU, CRAIG? COME BACK TO THE UNITED STATES AND SHOW US WHAT REAL MUSIC IS INSTEAD OF THESE TRASHY "LOVE" SONGS! This album was so much better than "Slicker Than Your Average". I like most of the songs, especially "Just Chillin'" and "My Love Don't Stop". If you have Craig's first CD, just forgive him for the second one and get this one, definately. He displays an excellent range, and he writes his own songs. And he's drop-dead handsome?!?! Definately recommended for somebody who wants to hear some real music. I just hope he makes a comeback in the U.S.

3 out of 5 stars The musical journey continues.......2006-09-11

Six years since his groundbreaking debut, one of Britain's hottest Urban exports Craig David returns with his latest offering - an autobiographical and personal album titled "The Story Goes". A spectacular debut can be a boon or a bane. While it definitely helps engrave a musician's position and significance in the world of music, it also lays the foundation for lofty and unrealistic expectations for future musical endeavors. It is the phenomenon that created the term "sophomore slump" - something Craig experienced with his last album "Slicker than your average". Yet, it has not deterred him and he is still possessed by the will to go on. His fans will be more than glad about this - especially given the results of his most recent effort, which while not stellar, are most certainly substantial.

On "The story goes", it appears that Craig has made a deliberate effort to focus almost exclusively on ballads. Some listeners might get the feeling that Craig has taken a "middle of the road safe" approach to most of these ballads making them sound like mainstream adult contemporary tracks. While most of them are not instant grabbers, their classic R&B vibes melted with Craig David's smooth voice most certainly have the potential to grow on listeners in a rather short span of time. The only exception to this is "Hypnotic" - Craig's strongest ballad to date - a magical ingredient to spice up a romantic evening. It is reason enough for listeners to give this album the chance it rightfully deserves.

For those that equate Craig David with high-energy 2-step tracks, this album might not be all that they would have hoped for. The only track reminiscent of the 2-step style that Craig adopted on his successful debut "Born to Do It" is "All the Way" - a fun, light-hearted and exhilarating up-tempo track aimed at filling a dance floor. On the other hand, for those that associate Craig David with a powerful voice that keeps him miles ahead of the rest of his R&B contemporaries, this just might be the album they have been secretly waiting for.

Delivering clear-cut verdicts on an album such as this might not be as easy as one would hope for since it does not match the standards of the highly successful "Born to Do it" but most certainly provides glimpses for a long musical future for the exceptionally talented Craig David. It deserves a fair chance.

Songs for the casual listener: Hypnotic
Songs for the Craig David fan: All the way, Hypnotic, My Love don't stop

5 out of 5 stars unexpected but pleasant.......2006-09-05

I read alot of reviews saying this album had too many ballads and wasn't as good as the first album. I wouldn't call myself a Craig David fan, but I've always liked alot of his songs. So I decided to get it anyways to see for myself. It's true that the album is mostly composed of love songs and doesn't have too many of his upbeat songs, but I still liked it. I don't enjoy love songs too much but somehow he made them upbeat and different. I have alot of favorite songs in this album, as I always do with craig david. Separate Ways, Unbelievable, and the first song which is the most upbeat are a couple favorites.

This album is more wistful and contemplative which is nice because you can play it in the background without getting overwhelmed. I have to say this was unexpectedly really good. I've been playing the whole album over and over for weeks now, and I could still go listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-06-17

What can I say, its a classic craig david album. Am a big fan of his music. If you like good music, this is the album to get. My favorite songs are Hypnotic, Seperate Ways and Johnny.

3 out of 5 stars Dissapointing, To Say The Very Least.......2006-05-29

If music history tells us anything, it's that the 3rd album is always the album that shows us what path an artist is going to take for the rest of their career. It seems to always be; the first album is great, the 2nd is weak, and the third is kind of a "back to the basics" type album. Craig Ashley David, has completely reworked this system.

Let's start with the basic negatives of this album. First and foremost, there are far too many slow ballads on this album. Not that Craig can't do slow ballads, but having only one up-tempo/2 step track is a complete letdown. Especially with Craig's track record of being a primary 2-step artist. Slow ballads are all over the album, and it doesn't help that 90% of them range from really, really boring, and generic to above average. Even Craig's quicker ballads are kind of boring as well. "I'm Sorry (I Don't Love You No More)" is terribly generic, along with songs other Craig fans are raving about, like "All The Way" and "Hypnotic." The only truly incredible tracks on this album include Johnny, Let Her Go, and I Never Should Have Walked Away....everything else ranges from skippable, to weak.

Craig's voice, like always, is beautiful. In fact, one thing he's always had is a beautiful, though not strong voice; and one thing I've loved about him, is despite not having a strong voice, he relies on his song writing to keep him in the ranks of other R&B artists. Sadly, great song writing, seen in "Booty Man" or "Fast Cars" isn't here either.

This album is still worth purchasing for huge Craig fans, like myself. Simply to hear is progression [or in this case digression] and his voice on new material is worth every penny. People looking to get into Craig for the first time, should look towards "Slicker Than Your Average" assuming you don't mind the terrible rap verses, or "Born To Do It" assuming you don't the immaturity seen throughout the album.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

When Philly soul sister and onetime Jill Scott backing singer Vivian Green nails a jazzy supper club vibe--as she does on songs like "What Is Love?" and the impossibly sad "No Sittin' by the Phone" from her lovely Love Story debut--you feel more elegant just listening to her. Green has one up on her hero, Barbra Streisand--she writes her own songs, credibly draws on the rich tapestry of gospel and R&B, and she can play. "24 Hour Blue" is equal parts funk and soul; "Superwoman" is a fluid, string-boosted call-to-arms for unappreciated women everywhere; and "Music" is an impossibly hip midnight-hour declaration of love for her craft. Manicured but never bloodless, slick but not austere, A Love Story stands as one of the most confident, accomplished, and sexy urban debuts in memory. --Kim Hughes

5 out of 5 stars A Good Love Story.......2007-06-27

I think 10/13 song are good unlike most albums that sell mush more and people make alot of fuss about example Neyo's cd in my own words.
The song writing is very good and the lyrics are arranged in a way that works with the music production. check it out
If you like this cd check out...Chrisette Michele's I Am (better album than this one as a whole, so if money is low and you can't get both, get Chrisette's)...Terry Ellis, Lovely Voise also..good cd...Conya Doss is worth checking out also, she has 3 albums

5 out of 5 stars What Is Love???.......2007-05-15

This disc is about love won, and love lost. Vivian has a beautiful voice and it conveys her passion and thoughts. Emotional Rollercoaster, What is Love, Final Hour, No Sitting By The Phone, Be Good To You, and Complete, should have been released on urban radio in heavy rotation. These would have been slow jam classics by now. Fanatic, and Keep on Going, fits the urban sound of a Maxwell, Jill Scott, and Angie Stone. A good group to be associated with. Jill Scott knows talent. (Vivian Green once sung backup for Jill Scott.)

5 out of 5 stars THE most beautiful voice.......2006-03-10

i have to say when i brought this album i had never heard of vivian i read a review and thought yeah i could like this .I loved it.One of the best voices to emerge in recent years vivians has that rare ability to make you feel ,make you feel through the power of her voices .Vivian has that timless appeal to her voice like she could be singing thirty years ago but also maintaing that modern neo thang .

Lovely tracks like what is love ,which contains gorg background music, aint nothing but love ,where vivians voice soars, the uplifting gotta keep going on and the amazingly touching no more sittin by the phone pure heartbreak convade in vivians voice .

While i do like her follow up this album just feels more spritually together from a woman who knows where shes going.x

5 out of 5 stars UNIQUE AND UNSTOPPABLE.......2005-12-05

This is a AWESOME album. I think she has a very unique, yet someone familiar style that makes her easy to embrace. I have grown right along with Vivian Green. From the Emotional Rollercoaster to Gotta Go, Gotta Leave. I am a huge fan of her talent and musical style. From the First track to the Final track, it's just awesome. She is a great artist and her second album is just as appreciated as the first. She can definately be at the top of R&B with the right management and good career decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Stars!!!.......2005-11-29

I've STILL been wearing a groove in this one - usually as soon as I come into work, while I clean my house, etc., etc. There's not a bad song to be found on this CD. Ms. Green's vocal and the music blend together so beautifully. I know it's cliche, but I can't wait for her next one.

On her debut album, Based on a True Story, Lil' Mo moves from behind the scenes into the spotlight. You'll probably recognize the soaring vocals on "Superwoman Pt. II" from her hook work for artists like Ja Rule and Missy Elliott. Taking almost all of the writing credits on her debut, Lil' Mo uses her imagination and her brilliant alto to let listeners know that she's more than just a pretty voice. Mo uses her evocative vocal abilities to transform the clichéd story of a little girl with big dreams on "My Story" into a moving piece of music that sends chills up the spine with every climb of her clear voice. Equally powerful is Mo's remake of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," where she displays the full extent of her range. Likewise, songs like "Supa Star" and "Player Not the Game," featuring Carl Thomas, will send you on an ethereal ride through Lil' Mo's intricately woven world. Lil' Mo's in full command of her voice and material on Based on a True Story, and after one listen, you'll marvel at this new super-singer. --Felicia A. Wilks

5 out of 5 stars Based On A True Story.......2005-05-18

i remember this album when I was 14. I loved this album and it is tight and she can blow like any other diva. The album is like a chapter in her life,as every song is a reflection of her. With soul and clarity, each song is deliciously brewed and produced under a kaleidoscope of lush instrumentation. She co-wrote some of the songs. This album should have been promoted more. Remember, this was 2001.

    5 out of 5 stars Hot!!! a must-buy!!!.......2004-08-28

some people don't get this album cuz they're not from the ghetto like i am. it really shows Lil' Mo's character and the lyrics r really really really really gewd & clever!

    2 out of 5 stars ...Horrible........2002-11-06

The hype is what made this album so bad. The album had so much hype, it was so long awaited...and then it turned out horribly. The songs are beat. For a great vocalist sure did make a bad album...

3 out of 5 stars Wish there was a 'lil mo' to this average CD.......2002-02-24

The up side: Lil Mo clearly shows some potential in her debut CD. She writes, or co-writes most of the songs on the CD. And she sings the songs with a passion. "My Story" and her gospelized Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time" remake are particularly heartfelt. Her voice is strong and sharp, reminiscent of Michelle from Destiny's Child. Halfway decent ballads/midtempo numbers include "Player Not The Game", "She Cood Neva B Me", "Saturday" and "How Many Times". And of course, there's the hit "Superwoman Pt. II" with Fabolous.

The down side: A little misleading advertising - listeners lured into this CD by the funky electronic bleeps of "Superwoman Pt. II" should NOT expect more of the same. The rest of the CD is largely comprised of midtempo housewife R & B material (although there is "Gangsta", an unnecessary uptempo number built off Snoop's "Gin & Juice").

And the songs are mostly just average, even the better ballads mentioned above. It's the kind of sweet material that plays just fine in the background. There's nothing dreadful about any of it, but there's nothing transcendent either. Not much that steps above the level of routine filler on a Kelly Price or Faith Evans CD. In other words, its a nice first effort, a fine three star CD of the moment. But I find it unlikely that folks will be playing this one much beyond this year, after which plenty of new average "one hit" CDs will come along to replace it.

I remain impressed by Lil Mo's singing and writing efforts. I hope that the songs improve even more with experience. And I recommend that buyers either hold out for a cheap used copy of this - or hold out a few years to see if Lil Mo makes it big enough to merit a 'greatest hits' collection. If she does, I'm sure it'll have the best tracks from this, and if she doesn't last - you probably won't have missed much.

    3 out of 5 stars IT'S COO.......2001-11-23

Lil' mo's CD is something that u can sit back and relax to. her best songs are ta da, supa star and sturday. but there is others that are just as good. ofcorse there are other songs that can bore you. but she is a talented young lady that has to sart somewhere and then go from there.

Music That Tells the Story is the companion to spiritual guru Iyanla Vanzant's self-help bestseller of the same name and incorporates the principles laid out in the book. Blending spiritual wisdom with common sense, the author tells us how to come out of the "basement" and live vibrantly even while we're waiting to manifest our wildest dreams of love and connectedness. Vanzant calls this "the meantime"--a place one will revisit periodically through life's unfolding. Interspersing smooth inspirational R&B tunes with bits of juicy text read by the author, the disc espouses nuggets such as "Love doesn't hurt; falling into the traps we set for love makes us hurt ourselves." The songs, some cowritten and performed by Vanzant, are both old and new, and are sung by a group of artists including Kelly Price, Yolanda Adams, and Faith Evans. Successful in its mission, the recording is affirmation for a life fully lived in the absence of perfection. --Paige La Grone

5 Stars is not NEARLY enough to rate this magnificant cd. It's not just music but its spiritual and mental awakening at its very BEST. Each and Every Song on this CD is BEAUTIFUL and MEANINGFUL... at the least! And the interludes frmo Ms. Iyanla Vanzant are too valuable to put into words.... Anyone who knows hurt, anyone who knows confusion, anyone who knows pain and anyone who KNOWS they want Peace will find total joy in owning this disk. If you listen, you will be heard... meaning, if you listen to what she says, your inner most self will be heard... she touches a part of you that you neglect in so many ways... it's just wonderful... I heard this cd probably back when it first came out and I have been in love with it ever since... In fact, passing it along to my Mother, my best friend, and recommending it to anyone I feel would truly gain something from this remarkable delivery... I would recommend this cd to anyone who is trying to get thru life with their head up and their heart open... In these days, it's hard to live with an open heart because there is so much pain evolving but for anyone who wants some spirtual feeding, This is a full course.

For anyone struggling with relationships, this is the CD for you! Most of us have to be "told" when to take care of self! Play this CD as you are preparing to start your day, and I can assure you that your self-confidence will be more secure, your self-esteem will be raised and you will not allow any relationship, whether personal or professional to make you feel "less than." One of the best "self-help" lessons available.

4 out of 5 stars Some hits, some misses, but good overall.......2007-05-31

As a fanatic of both Curtis Mayfield and obscure R&B, I eagerly anticipated this. It came last week and here's the verdict.

Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) was a grossly underrated genius of Soul who was not only to Soul what Bob Dylan was to folk rock, but also attemtpted to be Chicago's Berry Gordy with his Curtom label.

Lots of good stuff here scattered among 3 Cds. The Five Stairteps (precursors to the J-5) have a number of their tunes here that are hard to find on CD, such as "I'm The One Who Loves You," "Stay Close to Me," and the lovely "Behind Curtains." A young Donny Hathaway is represented by a tune with the Mayfield singers and a 1969 duet with June Conquest (who alas didn't live up to her name when it came to the music industry). Baby Huey and the Babysitters really get things funked up with "Mighty Mighty Children." And Curtis and his Impressions are also well represented by the lovely and little known "Seven Years" as well as the bigger hits "Choice of Colors" and "This is My Country."

Can't discuss this set without mentioning Mavis Staples' underrated PIECE OF THE ACTION. This song has a soft spot in the hearts of those who saw the Cosby/Poitier film of the same name and the dance sequence that this song energized.

Of course in a set this vast, there are bound to be few clunkers, but since this is the CD age, you can easily skip over these and enjoy what's good here.

This CD is a testament as to why corporate radio needs to go. There is TOO MUCH good stuff that is not exposed to the masses. Enjoy.
