Customer Reviews:
Great Value CD,with some all time classic tracks.......2007-04-19
This cd has excellent sound quality,i like a lot of the Californian Beach Music,as the beach scene is very similar to the Northern Soul which we have in England, some of the tracks having been played on both scenes.
The Artistics / I'm Gonna Miss you was one of the first American Soul records that converted me to the music in the early 60's,Marvin Smith's vocals are a joy to behold. In A Moment-The Intrigues was also a big 'Northern Soul'track in the UK,Come Softly to Me by Jimmy James & The Vagabonds which i believe is very big on the beach music scene was originally recorded by my friend Jimmy in Jamaica, before he came to reside in the UK in the early 60's,the original having a hawaiian guitar backing, this version with piano backing. When i told him his record was being played more than thirty years after its original release he was suitably impressed. He still plays many live dates to packed audiences today in England, still one of the best live acts....
The Tams,Embers and Jackie Wilson make this a 'cd' NOT TO BE MISSED!!!
Beach Music.......2007-01-10
The sound quality of the CD is great and so is the music selection. Everyone has enjoyed the CD!
Great Beach Music a la S. Carolina.......2006-11-13
If you like the shag/beach sounds you will love this to add to your collection.
I Love Beach Music.......2004-05-29
As a native of North Carolina and a little town of Havelock, I grew up just 15 minutes from the beach. The cities on the coast include Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, and Emerald Isle. In the old days - 60s - 70s there were dance clubs everywhere and this was the music of choice. The radio stations inland from the beach played beach music year around. Today - those clubs are gone and replaced with hotels and water parks. But I remember those days and know great beach music. This is an awesome CD for those of you re-connecting with your beach-roots or seeking something new to listen to. It's unique, it's smooth and mellow like great jazz or R&B - but you can dance to it. I'm home sick for it and this CD gives me that "fix" till I can get back home again and get sand in my shoes. You'll enjoy this CD!
Carolina Beach Music fans will not want to miss this one!!!!.......2004-05-21
Although I have never visited Myrtle Beach or any other beach in the Carolinas for that matter, I have become quite curious about a genre of music known as "Beach Music". In fact, I had never even heard of it until about 10 or 12 years ago. No folks, this Beach Music is not Jan and Dean or the Beach Boys sound. This music emerged after World War II. It began with rhythm and blues and jump blues and evolved over the years. It was really a local phenonmenon in the Carolinas and Virginia region. To learn more about this interesting genre, I suggest you go to beachshag.com where you will find a wealth of information on the subject.
While by no means complete, this terrific 2003 single CD release from Varese Sarabande offers up 25 of the best tunes from the past 50 years. You'll hear the great R&B sounds of The Dominoes "Sixty Minute Man" and Hank Ballard and the Midnighters "Work With Me Annie". Beach music reached the height of its popularity in the 1960's and there is a large representation of tunes from that decade on this disc. Enjoy again classics like "Cool Jerk" by the Capitols, "Hello Stranger" by Barbara Lewis and the rousing party tune "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love) by the Swingin' Medallions. Credit engineer Steve Massie for a terrific mastering job on this disc. And there are a few nice surprises on the disc as well. If you have never heard the music of the Embers, you are in for a real treat. The opening track, "I Love Beach Music" appears to be the national anthem of Beach Music. There are a couple of other tunes on this disc that I did not previously own that are surprisingly good. "Come To Me Softly" by Jimmy James and the Vagabonds would remind you very much of a Gerry and the Pacemakers tune. I was particularly impressed by a 1987 tune from O.C. Smith called "Brenda". It really makes me wonder why we did not hear more of this wonderful voice after "Little Green Apples" in 1968.
I had given some consideration to purchasing the 2 CD set "I Love Beach Music" from South Carolina's Ripete Records. But the $32.49 price tag scared me off. I thought this was the better bargain. I stopped short of a five star rating because while the Varese did a respectable job on the 8 page booklet, I would have preferred to see a bit more about the history of Beach Music. But all in all, this is one terrific buy. Highly Recommended.

Priced Right for the '70's Obsessives'..........2002-10-06
I like this CD because I get a very good classic soul mix, and I get to save a few dollars from not having to purchase a box set or anthology mix for the tunes I want to hear. For example, this is one of the few CDs that has that Jerry Butler/Brenda Lee cut "Ain't Understanding Mellow?" (a 'blue lights in the basement' track around here) that ain't in some [price] greatest hits compilation. I get The Commodores "Sweet Love" and Luther Ingram's classic "(If Loving You is Wrong) I don't Want to Be Right" on one CD. And I get the Ahhh-hah! without chasing down the right time they play certain of these jams on the classic R and Bee radio station here. Like, they seldom play that nice "Misty Blue" by Dorothy Moore. Well, I don't have to wait till the station decides to play it....
Setting The Mood.......2000-05-27
This Album has all The Right Songs.Just Having Marvin,Barry ALone is a Must.but also The Great Norman Conners You are my Starship which is The Cut.The Songs Just Flow here.Very Essential for Setting The Mood.
The best love-jam album on the market........1998-12-24
Of all the "70s Soul" albums crowding the market and the shelves, this one is among the best. From Barry White's opening plea to Jerry Butler's closing beseachment, the album flows like butter. Butter for your ears, that is. You really can't go wrong with the likes of Luther Ingram gracing your album, dig? If lovin' you is wrong, I don't wanna be right; if bein right means needing ANOTHER soul album besides this one then I'd rather live a wrongdoin life.

Customer Reviews:
Classic Dusty Springfield.......2007-06-08
This is a great 2-CD set of Dusty Springfield, from when she first began recording through her tragically short career. For Dusty Springfield fans, the sound is crisp and clean and the songs bring back many fond memories...what's not to enjoy??
Who Puts These Things Together?.......2005-10-20
While one can't argue with the price of this 2-CD set, one wonders why all these redundant compilations of Dusty's music are necessary? And, since most of them were released after her untimely death in 1999, there's a certain aroma of crass cashing in by serving what this writer calls the Necrophiliac Music Market. It seems every time a musician dies, their record sales skyrocket. It happened with Elvis, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, et al. In other words, who's raking in this dough? Certainly not the late great artist. And, therein lies the tragic irony of Dusty Springfield. It would appear Dusty has had more albums released after her way too early demise than she ever did in life. This is but one of many postmortem compilations floating around.
While the song choices cover just about every phase of Dusty's 40-year career, including her early days with The Springfields, their chronology has been totally ignored. Why this album doesn't begin with the Springfields' tracks followed by Dusty's first solo hit "I Only Want To Be With You" defies logic. Why the first disc ends with the Kurt Weill-esque "Soft Core" and the second disc begins with the insipid, non-Dusty hit "Close To You" is but one example of the disjointed, herky-jerky musical progression of this album. With no prevailing theme and no natural segues, this album leaves the listener confused and unsatisfied.
This writer gave it 4 stars only because it's Dusty. However, if you're truly a Springfield aficionado, might I suggest you pay the extra money and purchase the brilliant 4-disc compilation, "Simply Dusty" - the nearly 100 track, well-thought-out, chronological remastered compilation of Dusty's finest work.
Dust was one of the 20th Century's most gifted vocalists/musicians. While this album will give the listener more than a glimpse of her incredible talent, the way this set is organized will not accord the new Dusty Springfield fan the opportunity to hear how Dusty grew and changed as an artist. "Simply Dusty" tells the whole story - this set is merely disjointed fragments of a fantastic talent's life's work.
Great 2CD set for Dusty fans and afficionados.......2005-03-06
"Classics and Collectibles" isn't simply yet another Dusty compilation cos it offers the original now-rarely-heard mono mixes of all except three of her British 60s singles and some genuine rarities that should appeal to fans and afficionados. Her biggest hits - inevitably the big ballads - are collected on the "Classics" CD. Her less well remembered hits - mostly uptempo numbers - are culled to accompany the rarities on the "Collectibles" CD.
If I had to pick one song from the "Classics" CD that truly stands out, it's the mono mix of "Goin' Back" - it's a thrilling experience listening to it because this long forgotten singles mix is aurally so different from the conventional stereo mix we have come to know and love.
The "Collectibles" CD is for afficionados where the goodies are at. Rarities to set the hearts of fans aflutter include "They Long To Be Close To You" with its Bacharach-styled musical intro restored, "The Corrupt Ones" preceded by a sequence of atmospheric studio chatter, an unedited "Heartbeat", alternative vocal takes of "Nothing" and "If Wishes Could Be Kisses", "Standing In The Need Of Love" (possibly the first song Dusty ever recorded as a solo artiste in late 1963), the original soundtrack version of "Sweet Ride" in terrific stereo, the rare singles mix of "Little By Little" (with distinctive backing vocals that go "ooh ooh" mysteriously excised from the stereo mix) and a much stronger stereo mix of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" featuring alternative vocals from Dusty and audible background singers to close the CD. For completists, there's also the rare but much maligned "Sometimes Like Butterflies".
To cap it all, Universal used a rare but beautiful shot of Dusty (circa 64/65) indulging her musical tastes in her Baker Street flat. For once, the record company is making an effort with the packaging.
A great product. Highly recommended.
Awesome Gems!.......2004-12-14
What a fabulous collection this is! Now, though I am not happy that they released some of her rare classics in mono mixes, I am still - however - glad that they put some huge rarities on here.
Awhile back, I ran across her 'Stay Awhile/I Only Want to...," CD, and found the unreleased song 'Standing in the Need of Love' just wonderful. Too bad it wasn't released years back when it was recorded. The other thing I like are the never-before-released stuff: The full-edit of '(They Long To Be) Close To You,' the stereo soundtrack version of 'Sweet Ride,' a previously unreleased song, 'I Have Found My Way Through the Darkness,' an alternate vocal take of 'I Am Your Child,' the single mix of Dusty's 1978 comeback song, 'I'm Coming Home Again,' another unreleased song, 'Sweet Inspiration,' an unreleased edit of 'The Corrupt Ones,' and, uh, at long last... the unreleased stereo version of Dusty's timeless hit, 'I Just Don't Know What To Do with Myself.' I am so glad that this is finally being issued; at last!
Get this CD, folks! I promise you... you won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
You gotta have it!.......2006-10-14
This is a first class selection of old school favorites. There are no fillers on this and the compilation is nicely mixed and matched to create a lovely mellow vibe. You just gotta have it!
So Smooth!.......2006-04-08
I buy a lot of CDs on Amazon, but this one prompted me to write a review because it is simply the best R&B compilation I have ever come across. I can't believe how many incredible songs are found on one CD. Check it out!
A near-perfect collection of cruisin' R&B oldies........2005-08-19
While this CD would not be my first choice as the soundtrack to cruisin' down the freeway, highway or avenue (preferably in a convertible with the top down!) it's still a superb collection of 1960s-'70s R&B. The songs by The Commodores, The Spinners, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Bobby Womack, The Staple Singers and Smokey Robinson are timeless and this is a near-perfect collection of smooth and classic vintage R&B. The liner notes are also very interesting and insightful. A nice package indeed.
A Definite Must-Have for Old School Fanatics.......2005-07-03
I can't believe no one has reviewed this CD yet! This is one of the best R&B compilations that I've heard so far. I enjoy listening to it while I'm at home, but it's better to listen to it while your crusin' in your ride, right when the sun is setting which is the "Golden Time of Day." That song is on there along with other classics such as "Cruisin'" by Smokey Robinson; "Groovin'" by the Young Rascals; and "Let's Do it Again" by the Staple Singers. Out of the 20 songs on the CD, I enjoy 15 of them. This is one CD that I will *not* be lending out.

Album Description
2CD set and Digitally Remastered. A really heavy duty collection featuring some of the biggest names in soul music. These are the grand masters of funk, the bandleaders and artist who provided the dynamic sound track for an exciting decade. When you've got James Brown singing 'I Got Ants In My Pants' you know you're in for an itchy night out. And when Isaac Hayes tells you to 'Do Your Thing' then you'd better believe it. All musical aspects of the genre are represented, from the driving dance rhythms of Sly Stone to the more introspective instruments work of Timmy Thomas, the organist who caused quite a buzz with 'Why Can't We Live Together.' Here are the great vocal groups, the Isley Brothers and Gladys Knight and the Pips and the soulful balladeers like Bobby Womack, Al Green and the late great Curtis Mayfield. In the words of the Dramatics 'Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get.'

Customer Reviews:
MISSING CLASSICS !.......2006-07-27
Excuse me, not only is "Some Guys Have All The Luck" missing, the most beautiful of all their songs missing is, "Once In A Lifetime Thing", "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me", and "I've Been Through This Before", one of their most powerful ballads. They were all recorded on the Atco label. If they were all included on this cd, this would be one grand cd. Why on earth the record company did not put them on this cd, who knows? I hope some day, they soon will be !! J.H.
One Of The Best Cuts Is Nowhere To Be Found.......2006-07-17
There was a lot happening with 70s Soul, and one of the bright stars were The Persuaders. I loved "A Thin Line Between Love And Hate". No truer words were ever written in a ballad.
At the same time I cannot be but disappointed, because "Some Guys Have All The Luck" is missing in action. Why?
All the remakes since, fail to measure up. Help!
Other wise I would have given this release 4.5 stars, but for that one glaring flaw.
Great but missing something.......2005-12-06
Most people remember the Persuaders as that group that did Thin Line Between Love And Hate. Awesome early-70s soul music there, like most of the rest of this album. But who decided to leave "Some Guys Have All The Luck" out of this collection? That might have been their next-most-popular song, and judging by the cover version Rod Stewart did of it, maybe their next most-well-known. It's a very good collection representing their soul sound, but leaving out SGHATL makes anyone who buys this collection just this side of lucky.
The Original Persuaders.......2003-10-11
I love The Persuaders. Unfortunately Tommy Hill passed, but The Persuaders legend can be seen on their official website; www.thepersuadersonline.com with the Living Legend/singer/song writer/producer/ Richard Poindexter, Alexander Brown, David Turner, and Carlos Flores (replacing Tommy Hill).. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to know you. PJ
