A Real Compact Disc Of Greatest Hits.......2007-07-31

This one is pretty good compared to a few other "Best Of" issues. Still a good one for the casual fan but by no means a substitute for a REAL best of collection (save that for "This Is The Moody Blues", Anthology & Gold). If your not sure about The Moody Blues & want just a solid collection on one CD, this one is the ticket.

The Best of the Moody Blues.......2007-07-08

This is truly "The Best" of the Moody Blues!! It brought the 60's & 70's back to me. I always loved their music. Great dancing music,wonderfully put together. I highly recommend this music for us ,"old hippies", and others who appreciate well performed music.

Best Compilation Available.......2007-06-20

It is so hard to create a CD that has the "best" Moody Blues songs, because you inevitably have to leave something out. The only thing I would have changed about this album, however, is I would have omitted "Go Now" and included "Driftwood." Then this would be perfect. Nevertheless, it's pretty close!

More complete than "Voices in the Sky: The Best of the Moody Blues" :).......2007-06-18

"The Best of the Moody Blues" ("Best Of" for short, in my review) is probably the most complete single CD collection of Moody Blues hits and classics to date ... A fine choice of tracks featured on this collection, and I love the album cover (The most recent version featuring the dove and the starry night-time sky) ... Looks like the cover of a movie soundtrack! :)

First time that "Go Now" is featured on a Moody Blues best of compilation, isn't it? I agree with those who felt that this song was out of place on this release, compared to the rest of the songs, but no big deal ... The sound quality in the mastering/re-mastering is pretty good for a mono sound recording.

It's a shame that the alternate mix of "Tuesday Afternoon," from the 2006 Deluxe Edition SACD release of "Days Of Future Passed," wasn't discovered at the time of the making of "Best Of." While the stereo separation wasn't so hot, the mix featured a clean ending to the song, featuring an extra bar of the instrumentation and Justin Hayward chanting, and without any orchestra added, too. No big deal, once again, but such a mix would have made "Best Of" unique, just to acquire a different mix of the song. On this "Best Of" edit, turn the volume to your stereo system all the way up, during the fadeout, and you will hear a quick burst of the strings from the orchestra on the very last note of the song, just before the tune is completely faded out ... Something amusing to note, when it came to attempting to fade out "Tuesday Afternoon" before the orchestra took over the remainder of the song. :)

Before this non-orchestral version of "Nights In White Satin" made an appearance on "Best Of," it was previously featured on the 1985 compilation "Voices in the Sky: The Best of the Moody Blues" ("Voices," for short) ... The sound quality is really good on this mix. It's loud and crisp, plus the sound quality sounded magnificent for the mix on "Voices," at a time before the remastered CD's came out!

The mix of "Ride My See-Saw," also taken from "Voices," returns here ... Notice how this mix fades out several seconds earlier than the mix from "Legend Of A Band" ("Legend," for short). On that release, The Moodies chant "Ride My See-Saw" three times, as the song fades out, but the mix featured on "Best Of" (And all future compilation mixes of "See-Saw") cuts the tune short right on the very last chant of "See-Saw," so it sounds like "See-Sss" ... Just another little something I couldn't help but notice, as I raised the volume to catch the fadeout! :) In that case, I would rather the record company selected the "Legend" mix. It featured a more professional fadeout.

I guess for those who couldn't stand the orchestral remakes of both "Question" and "Isn't Life Strange," from "Legend," "Best Of" makes things right by giving the fans the originals. :)

When the earlier version of "Best Of" was released, it featured the "Time Traveller" ("T.T.," for short) edit of "The Story In Your Eyes." When the more recent version was released (featuring the different album cover), there was a great improvement, as the single version of "Story" was substituted (Previously found on "Legend," and later appearing on "Anthology" and "Gold"), which was about twelve seconds longer than the "T.T." mix. The CD booklet even changed the running time of the track, on the later edition! :)

"Best Of" features the single version of "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)," with the loud crashing drums in the intro, not the cross fade from "When You're A Free Man," as heard on "Seventh Sojourn" and the edit job on "Legend." This mix previously appeared on "Voices" and "T.T."

The mix of "Blue World" was taken from "T.T." You can tell when raising the volume during the fadeout, as the edit features the ending to "Blue World" cross faded with the sound of the synthesizers that open up "Sitting At The Wheel!" Here, the sound is cut short, as the tune fades out. It's too bad that "Best Of" didn't feature the original mix of "Blue World" from "The Present," for something refreshing, as the mix chosen here was a carbon copy of the "T.T." mix.

The remaining songs are the same as their original versions and those that appeared on "T.T." I also agree with the opinions on excluding the Justin Hayward only tracks, "Blue Guitar" and "Forever Autumn," from "Best Of," since none of the other Moody Blues performed on either track. On the up side, though, both songs are beautiful, brilliant, well done, and just as enjoyable as any Moody Blues tune. I don't mind the appearances of these two songs on the future compilations, though, as most of them were 2-disc CD collections, anyway. My personal alteration for "Best Of" would have been to replace the Justin Hayward tracks with the awesome "The Other Side Of Life," which was one advantage "Legend" had over this release. No biggie, yet again. Just a fantasty concept I had for "Best Of." :)

What I like more about "Best Of" than "Voices" is that there is more song variety and a bigger track listing here. True, "Voices" had an advantage over this release with classic songs like "Never Comes The Day," "After You Came," and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker," but I prefer a collection that is able to utilize as much CD space as possible. My all time favorite single Moody Blues compilation, however, is "Legend." True, "Legend" has a shorter track list than "Best Of," but I enjoy the former collection because it includes the rare orchestral remakes of "Isn't Life Strange" and "Question," which are difficult to come across, these days. Also, I prefer the full, orchestral versions of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin," also found on "Legend." Plus, like I mentioned above, "Legend" features "The Other Side Of Life," as well as a properly faded out mix of "Ride My See-Saw." Still any Moody Blues compilation is a winner, in my book, and all of the songs on "Best Of" are some of the best The Moodies have got ... Just listen for yourself! :)

One more thing. Here's something really bizarre that I've discovered, in regard to the earlier version of "Best Of" ... I used to have a copy of the earlier version, and there is one point in each of the following songs where the songs go from stereophonic sound into mono for one second: "I'm Just a Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)" (Right after the first time The Moody Blues sing this line), "The Voice" (At the beginning, when the synthesizers begin to fade in ... Both versions of this release have it), "Your Wildest Dreams" (After the second set of verses, when they sing "Once upon a time in your wildest dreams," also featured on the mix from "The Universal Masters Collection: Classic Moody Blues"), and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" (Right on the chorus, following the verse that begins with, "The words that I remember..."). Check this out with your headphones on, if you own a copy of the earlier edition of "Best Of!" :)

The 22 tracks on Retrospective deftly chronicle the best years of the Animals, who were far and away the grittiest band in the British Invasion of the mid-1960s. Eric Burdon's magnificently raw vocals and the stabbing chords of Alan Price's Vox Continental organ gave their covers of American blues and R&B classic such as Sam Cooke's "Bring it on Home" and John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom" an authenticity that no other British groups could match. Their rough sound also gave songs like "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Got to Get of This Place" a real sense of rage and menace. By 1967 Burdon was the only remaining original member and he formed a new band that eschewed the blues and R&B of his early years in Newcastle in favor of a psychedelic, San Francisco-influenced sound. Songs like "When I Was Young" showed he had a real gift for the type of personal songwriting that was becoming popular in the late 1960s while the lyrically obscure "San Franciscan Nights" and "Sky Pilot" suggested he spent too much time hanging out with hippies. Even when they stumbled, the Animals were interesting, and when they hit the mark, they were as good as any band from the British Invasion. --Michael John Simmons

This CD is a gem, every song a classic. If your a Animal fan this should be in your collection. The booklet also makes good reading and gives a bit of an insight to the band at different stages with different lineups.

This collection of The Animals songs is excellent.One gets all the best big hits of The Animals.From the greatly arranged "it's my life" to the all time classic "the house of the raising sun".Also included is a couple of Eric Burdon solo hits.This is a must buy for any "Animals" fan.You get it all in one CD,which also in includes a short telling of the group's history, in the liners notes.I highly recommind this CD.

The Animals Retrospective.......2007-06-09

One of the best reissues of 2004 the Animals finally get a concise career spanning compilation that shows why they deserve the same recognition as the Rolling Stones. Retrospective is a generous 22 tracks that ends with "Spill The Wine" where Eric Burdon and War prove to be a great match. All the classics are here including "House Of The Rising Sun", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", and "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" as well as lesser known classics like "See See Rider" and "It's My Life" making Retrospective the perfect collection for casual fans as well as completists. Any rock fan should add this album to their collection.

The only compilation that had everything I wanted and remembered from their heyday. "Anything" surprised me and I've grown to like it. Of course, what Animals compilation would be complete w/o "House of the Rising Sun", "San Franciscan Nights", "Monterey" and definitely "Sky Pilot". If you want the most bang for your buck, this is it!

The band that proclaimed itself "The Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World" has long since represented rock's most overarching confluence of art and commerce--with a distinct emphasis on the latter in recent decades--a notion this 40-track, five-decade-spanning anthology can't completely escape. While this is the first anthology to gather hits from the band's entire career, it's the early tunes that highlight one of the Stones' central ironies: virtually their entire "bad boy" reputation was built working for The Man. That original '60s musical arc bounded from '50s rock and R&B revivalism ("Not Fade Away," "The Last Time") to anti-Mop Top aggression ("Satisfaction," "Get Off My Cloud," "19th Nervous Breakdown") to proto-goth cynicism ("Paint It Black," "Have You Seen Your Mother Baby") and psychedelic minstrelsy ("She's a Rainbow," "Ruby Tuesday") to the epitome of blues-based cock rock ("Street Fighting Man," "Jumpin' Jack Flash") in quick succession. Wresting control of their own destinies--and future copyrights--at the end of the '60s, they'd spend the next 30 years largely recycling their earlier incarnation ad infinitum--their music sprinkled with occasionally successful forays into contemporary club and disco fodder ("Some Girls," "Shattered")--and resting on their well-paid laurels. Unfortunately, the listless quartet of new tracks that flesh out this collection seems little more than another business deal to hype their 2002-03 world tour, with "Don't Stop" arguably the weakest in a long string of post-'80s Stones McSingles. If Jagger seems typically detached here, Keith Richards injects some welcome, craggy warmth into the closing barroom lament, "Losing My Touch." It's Only Rock and Roll, and it's enough.......2007-07-23

An excellent 2-disc set that has all of the Stones's big hits up to the date of release - spans over 30 years of hits. The only people who could find fault with this coompilation are people whose personal favorite didn't make it. There won't be many such people tho. This is very complete, at least for those of us who primarily know the Stones from the radio.

Stong album of music but compromised ethically but, less so, aesthetically.......2007-07-17

I enjoy this mix and it makes for a great way to get remastered sound on career highlights spanning the decades without me having to re-purchase all the CDs.

For those complaining about the inclusion of latter-day songs or the exclusion of deeper tracks, please spare me with your self-righteous declarations of purity. Clearly, the intention here is to provide a 40-year-career retrospective that caters to the common denominator among devoted and casual fans of all generations. In this sense, this compact album of songs makes a strong statement of the band's accomplishments and sounds over four decades. Devoted followers of the band can choose (and probably already have chosen) from numerous other albums/compilations that serve other purposes.

For me, however, I have reservations about the ethical and aesthetic compromises made in compiling this album. First, listeners should be warned of the tracks that are newly edited versions of the originally-released versions. "Miss You" is over one minute shorter than the original studio release. "Mixed Emotions" is over 1/2 minute shorter! To not offer a brief disclaimer somewhere on the exterior of the package is an ethical assault on the consumer. Altering the originals for convenience of packaging is an aesthetic compromise I have trouble endorsing but, given how well this collection plays, I also have trouble damning.

Bottom line: Despite the reservations expressed above, this is a well-paced compilation that smoothly and enjoyably offers a 40-year retrospective on one of rock's greatest bands. The package offers sheer listening pleasure to anyone, particularly (but not only) the less-initiated.

You Can't Always Get What You Want- But You Get What You Need.......2007-07-17

I have to admit that building my summer sand castle was quite some chore. Chore at the shore if you will. Little did I know that when I picked this spot it was next to a beach mime colony. You got that right. They walk around and imagine stepping on seashells and use imaginary fishing poles to catch - you got it - nothing! My life has turned into an Antonioni nightmare. But, the good thing is that at least it's quiet and peaceful here at night.
Anyway, I am here to review the Stones 2 disc set called "Forty Licks" which is supposed to represent their forty years as a rock band. I don't think I could add any new insight into their music that you don't already know. Do remember though that they started out as a rythmn and blues group which grew more and more into the rock genre.
This is a good representative set of many of their mega-hits and best known songs. For the most part I think it is a satifactoy cross section of all their years. Although, I do have an issue of what was not included. I think "Tell Me" from their early years could certainly have been included. As well as "Rock and a Hard Place" from the Steel Wheels album. Should I also include "Monkey Man" from the Let It Bleed album? Well, we could go on and on et cetera et cetera of all the songs that weren't included. And, thinking it over, this could easily have been a 3 disc set and still not touch on all there is. My advice is, that if you really want the complete Stones, then get all their offerings. There are a few clunkers out there-but most of the albums are superb and probably show the band through many periods of their existence. They also have produced many, many live albums. Probably the very best would be Get Your Ya-Yas Out followed by Stripped. But, again, that is only my opinion.
Still, I think the material here is the most concise collection since the marriage of their record companys. Certainly it beats Hot Rocks by a mile. I understand what they were doing here - trying to give us a cross section of all their years. However, that said, I think their classic older tunes beat out the newer ones - but that is me just being picky.
I also think that many out there probably have a nonchalant opinion of them. "Oh, it's just the Stones again- God are they old"! You all know the drill. They have been around so long that it's easy for some to become complacent and not find anything they do to be of any consequence anymore. But this set, I think, will set those self-appointed pundits straight.
First off, they certainly have proven that they deserve the mantle of being mega-talents. You just have to listen to all they have done and marvel at the creativity and talent they possess. Alot of this is because of the Jagger-Richards collaboration. Keith is master of the groove and hook, meanwhile Jagger's lyrics are probably some of the best I've ever heard. The combination is lethal and, I believe, gave Lennon-McCartney a run for their money for many, many years. But, looking back, you would have thought that, at the beginning, the Stones would have burned out while the Beatles would have survived. Reality, though, has dealt us a strange twist of fate by proving the opposite is true. The fact that they are still at it, producing rock music of quality, is testimony to how great they really are.
I have seen these guys in concert many times. Really, I think that their shows were some of the best I've ever seen. I still can't get over Jagger ripping his scarf off and whipping the stage and throwing rose petals at the audience during "Midnight Rambler". And those huge blow-up women on the sides of the stage during "Honkey Tonk Women". They know how to do a show- that is for sure.
In closing, this 2 disc set is definitely worth owning, even if you have most of their material already. Why? Most of the great ones are here- in one package. And, although they have had many compilations (maybe too many?) in the past-most of the good stuff is right here. I believe that they are the world's greatest "Rock and Roll Band". Certainly there are others that are great. But, none of them have yet to reach the longevity. I say, keep rockin' guys. You really have nothing more to prove at this point. My only assumption is that you do it because you love the music. I love it too. And many others as well.
Now I must get back to my beach obligations. The mimes are imitating a Rolling Stones concert tonight. And, wouldn't you know? I have to provide the music!

These guys must have sold their souls to the devil because there is no other way one band could strike gold so many times. You can simply put this CD into your player and be entertained for hours. The only reason to skip a song is because you want to hear one great song before you hear the other great song.

Great band. Great album. Nothing else to be said.

Sounds better than ever.......2007-07-29

This sonically enhanced two-CD set provides seven years worth of vintage Stones from their peak period. Compare these delectable tracks to the rock music of today and one wonders where things went wrong in the mainstream. Melodic, meaningful, powerful and innovative, these Stones songs represent everything that is special about rock music.

Although there's not one mediocre track here, my favorites include the bluesy Time Is On My Side, Heart Of Stone, Wild Horses and Ruby Tuesday (covered by Melanie Safka among others), the raucous rock of Satisfaction, Get Off My Cloud, Street Fighting Man and Brown Sugar, with songs of social comment (Mother's Little Helper, 19th Nervous Breakdown), and beautiful ballads: As Tears Go By (covered by inter alia Marianne Faithfull), Play With Fire and Paint It Black.

The Stones must be the ultimate rock band, more influential than the Beatles in their 4 decades plus consistency and their exploration of the wilder side of life. This is an absolute masterpiece. If an alien came down and asked me to recommend some quality rock music, this album will top my list. It deserves 7 stars!

excellent cd from the stones.had it before and wore it out on cassette it may be their best compilation ever.

HOT ROCKS 1964-1971 IS THE BEGINNING'S AND MAKING'S OF A ROCK N' ROLL PHENOMENAL LEGACY........2007-06-24

I will be writing a review on the legendary greatest hits compilation 2-CD set entitled "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" by the second all-time greatest band in Rock n' Roll history that has also been called THE GREATEST ROCK N' ROLL BAND IN THE WORLD. I give you England's second most favorite sons, the reigning and defending World Champions of Rock n' Roll, T-H-E R-O-L-L-I-N-G S-T-O-N-E-S! "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" was originally released in 1972 on Vinyl/LP and 8-Track on the London / ABKCO Records label which is the Decca Record Company Ltd. Looking through the history of this compilation album, there were three different releases of this album on CD. This legendary compilation album would see its first release on a 2-CD set in 1985 on the ABKCO / London Records label which is the registered trademark of Decca Record Company Ltd. The 1985 release did one of the very first Analogue to Digital mastering ever by Mobile Fidelity Sound and is manufactured by PolyGram in Hanover, West Germany. The 1985 release is one of the most sought after collectibles around if you can find it. This compilation album would be re-released in 1986 on the ABKCO Records label noting that the recording's were Digitally remastered from original master recordings. Which now brings me to the new and most recent 2002 re-release also on the ABKCO Records label. The new 2002 re-release contains the DSD (Direct Stream Digital) Remastered encoding process which is to supposedly capture every detail and nuance of the original master tapes. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

PLEASE NOTE: There has been a concern that I found extremely important to stress to all of you. It has been brought to my attention by some of my friends as well as some of my fellow readers and reviewers that the 2002 release is really not recorded in the DSD remastered encoding process. After doing my own research and conducting my own personal study, I find this fact to be true. I purchased two different "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" on a 2-CD set bearing and stating the DSD Remastered logo and packaged in a Digipak while the other is packaged in a jewel case. Looking at the discs itself, the two discs packed in the jewel case are not on gold discs while the two discs that are packaged in the Digipak are gold discs. Listening to both sets, there was a difference and improvement in the sound quality of the DSD Remastered on the two gold discs packaged in the Digipak. There was no improvement on the other two discs. Personally, in my opinion, the very first 1985 CD release sounds better than the other two CD re-releases ever did. I just thought that I would clear this up and help in making you the consumers more aware of what you are purchasing.

What can I possibly say about THE ROLLING STONES that hasn't already been said? THE ROLLING STONES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording Rock's second all-time greatest anthems ever. THE STONES would also be known the world over for inventing the Rock n' Roll lifestyle thus labeling them "the bad boys of Rock." When ROLLING STONES legendary frontman and Rock God Mick Jagger met up with his old childhood chum, guitarist Keith Richards, their true friendship and bond would be special which would last up to this very day. However, when Jagger and Richards met up and joined forces with the original and genuine prince of darkness himself, the late great ROLLING STONES founder, leader and guitarist Brian Jones, Brian Jones' replacement, guitarist Mick Taylor, bassist Bill Wyman, drummer Charlie Watts and the late quitely known pianist, Ian "Stu" Stewart, THE ROLLING STONES would be born resulting in modifying the mixture of Blues, Jazz and Rock n' Roll together thus giving their sound a new rich and pure quality that the British could truly call their own. THE STONES have contributed and accomplished so much in Rock n' Roll that they don't have anything left to prove.

THE STONES legendary Rock anthems speak for themselves. With the exception of ELVIS and THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES have so many great songs put together in many greatest hits compilations, that many music lovers would feel and think that it is truly unfair that no other band around in this world could stand up to them or match them. When it comes to THE STONES' true Rockers in this compilation album, you have great anthems defining the band's persona beginning on DISC ONE such as the greatest riff in Rock n' Roll history, the blistering "Satisfaction," the mild and soothing song which unfolds into a Rocker grabber, "Under My Thumb," the merciless Rocker "Get Off Of My Cloud," the incredible sounding Rocker "19th Nervous Breakdown," the breakthrough Rocker "Paint It Black" and the explosive Rocker with a message, "Lets Spend The Night Together.

DISC TWO takes right where DISC ONE left off and begins with the forever ROLLING STONES legendary trademark Rock anthem, "Jumpin' Jack Flash," the electrifying Rocker "Street Fighting Man," the daring and tempting Rocker of all Rockers, "Sympathy For The Devil," the Rock n' Roll anthem that would have honky tonk bars screaming and craving for more, "Honky Tonk Women," the groundbreaking Rocker "Gimme Shelter," the kick a*s hard Rocker performed live, "Midnight Rambler" and THE STONES' rewarding experience's with black women, "Brown Sugar."

In closing, THE ROLLING STONES have been on Rock's ultimate pedestal on and off for many years now taking where THE BEATLES left off. However, THE STONES have also had their fair share of tragedies and tribulations to contend with such as the untimely deaths of both Brian Jones in 1969 and Ian "Stu" Stewart in 1985. Despite THE STONES fatalities, THE ROLLING STONES have persevered and continue to move forward in representing Rock n' Roll as being its only premiere act thus resulting in delivering the highest grossing tours of all time up to this very day. THE STONES have already received the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. THE ROLLING STONES have forever left more than their fair shares of their many mark's and place's in Rock n Roll history. And because of that my fellow Rock n' Rollers, THE ROLLING STONES will NEVER be forgotten or denied even if they tried. Rolling Stones Hot Rocks SACD.......2007-06-13

For any Stones fan, I think this was the culmination or consensus of the greatest hits album for any band. I have owned this title on vinyl, cd and now SACD. First of all, any compilation album is subject to the producer's vision, and I understand that. That is each song may have been produced differently.
On the first disc, it is obvious that the early days of stereo engineering meant separating everything into left and right, but the clarity of SACD really shines through.***Note** Just because it's SACD doesn't mean it's 5.1 surround. I was especially impressed with Ruby Tuesday. I finally can hear that the distortion in the left speaker is actually an over-mike'd cello and not (as I thought for years) some funky bass line.
The second CD really stood out with some great tunes, especially Honky Tonk Women and Midnight Rambler. I tend to prefer when songs are mixed as if I where listening to the band live. That is, I like the lead singer in the middle and drums behind the lead singer. Guitars, bass and backing vocals should be on either side. I was really disappointed with Gimme Shelter because this mix seemed to cram everything towards the center. I don't know if this was the original production or just this cd. The rest of the cd is great. Now if they can just re-engineer the Who's Who's Better, Who's Best on SACD, I'll be in Heaven. ***Another note*** This review may be nullified by the fact that, as my children have pointed out, I'm old, and as such, I can afford a lot better speakers than I could when I was young.

DSD Revives The Classics!.......2007-05-03

There's not much to add about the immense quality of the basic stereo versions of these songs. They are all immortal. However, this DSD (similar to SACD) brings out the subtle (and not so subtle) highs and lows of all tracks by accenting their high quality. Be aware that this is DSD and NOT SACD. It has to have the SACD logo to be SACD. That being said, you've never heard so clear a version of, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" or "Wild Horses". The most fantastic version is of, "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" which not only sounds like the first time you heard it - it sounds like they are in your living room! I jest not!

While they're best remembered for "House of the Rising Sun," the Animals had more than one track. What about "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Gotta Get Out of this Place," to name but two, as well as a later incarnation's "San Franciscan Nights," Eric Burdon's ode to the flower power of 1967? Always rough and ready, the Animals were a blues band from Newcastle who never looked completely comfortable in their suits, but who nonetheless produced some great pieces of music--although whether there was ever quite enough to fill an entire album you have to judge for yourself. --Chris Nickson

Not The Original Album.......2007-05-26

Although the cover of this is identical to the 1966 Album - this is NOT a reissue of that album. That album had 11 songs - two of which are NOT on this issue, which has 15 songs. It's a very good album and very representative of this oeriod of their output, but it should not be mistaken for a reissue of the 1966 MGM release.

Best of the Best.......2007-04-30

This is one of those classics that taken out of the cabinet - 30 years later - is still one of the greatest albums, blues, rock and roll or otherwise ever put together. My record is so scratched from over use and abuse through the years that I was forced to go to Amazon and buy the CD. Despite the skips, that rich, true groove, plastic fantastic and scratched album of mine will be sorely missed. I just couldn't bear to not hear the music.

Great Band.......2007-03-31

This band produced alot of good songs back in the 60's.
Their most well known song and a huge hit was House Of The Rising Sun.Thats got a tune that just seems to stick in you head.Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is another one of my favorites here.Eric Burdon and the band had a special sound.We Gotta Get Out Of This Place is another big hit i love that tune.It's My Life is another well known song from the Animals.
Bands like this were around for a short time,but made some of the best songs.

The Best of the British Invasion.......2006-10-17

The Animals were one of the more grittier of the British Invasion bands. This collections features their hits from the original line up. After this line up the band changed dramatically and it is difficult to compare the two except for the fact they both have Eric Burdon as the front man. House of the Rising Sun is a classic, but other lessor know tunes are just as great like Bo Diddley and Carry my Body. I've enjoyed this CD for a long time and you will to if you enjoy R&B\Blues influenced rock.

Buy Retraspective instead.......2005-09-14

You will better off buying The Animals Retrospective because it has more hits on it.Like White Houses, Sky Pilot and San Franciscan Nights. This is cheap Greatest Hits and missing allots of hits

Aftermath (UK) and thank goodness no Paint It Black!!!.......2007-03-23

This is the British version of the Rolling Stone's Aftermath album, which doesn't include "Paint It Black," thank goodness. Aren't we all just a little tired of that song. Anyway, most Stones fans already have it on a greatest hits album, or in my case the Singles collection. On this British version "Paint It Black" is replaced by "Mothers Little Helper." What a gem! Other great tracks not on the American album were "Out Of Time," "Take It Or Leave It" & "What To Do." Also, the classic "Under My Thumb" is here. The sound quality is much better than the 80's disc with better stereo separation as well. This was the first time the band went into the recording studio with a real album in mind, instead of a bunch of singles and cover songs. There is one big 11 minute filler on this album and even if you skip it, you're still left with a solid 42 minute album. Essential Rolling Stones!

If you like the Stones when they were just breaking into the scene and really making a name for themselves then this is a perfect cd to own.

The only drawback is Lady Jane. It just isn't a very good song. Maybe it worked for the swinging London crowd of the late 60's but not today.

Everything else is outstanding.

No Paint It Black? Forget it........2006-07-09

Paint It Black is the song which started me as a life-long Stones fan. And I still consider it as one of their top 5. I bought Aftermath as my first album. Without this song, the album is just not the same.

Feel All Right.......2006-06-11

Like my friends, I really like the very long, eleven minutes long, "Goin Home." I actually have this song coming right after "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" by Bob Dylan, another eleven minute song, burning onto a CD that I play often when I have a long drive. Just two songs and twenty two minutes have flown by, I feel like I arrived in no time at all, almost like I got there before I left. Somehow I just seem to float along with these two songs, Mick's voice works so well with Mr. Dylan's.

Then there is the rocking and a bit strange "It's Not Easy," which tells us that it's not easy to live on your own, how true. "Lady Jane" is a bit strange, but I like it a lot. "Think," well all I can say about that song is "Wow!" "High and Dry" has such great guitar work on it, kind of reminds me of the guitar work on Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row." Maybe that harmonica is in that song on purpose. And I'd be remiss if I didn't say how much I loved "I Am Waiting" and "Goin" Home." How can anyone not love those songs." Like every record by this band, the Greatest Group on Earth, this record is a keeper.

2007 Issue at Long Last of the Transcriptions of Early Moody Blues Performances on the BBC! the Band Changed their Musical Direction in 1967 by Attempting to Create a Rock Version of Dvorak's "New World Symphony". The First Fruit of the Vision was the "Days of Future Passed" Album, One of the Most Celebrated in Rock Music (And their Discography). Followed Up by "in Search of the Lost Chord", "to Our Children's Children" and "a Question of Balance", the Band Carved a Niche in the Pop Music World that was Imitated and Emulated by Others. Like Many Other Groups of the Era, They Recorded Sessions at the BBC for Various Radio and TV Broadcasts and Those Sessions Are Presented on this Double CD Set. Cd1 Has all their Stunning Live-in-the-studio Radio Transmissions While Cd2 Includes the Audio from TV Show Tapings, Including an Appearance on "The Tom Jones Show" that was Misplaced for Many Years.

Technical Flaws.......2007-07-04

Always nice to hear the Moodies. It's just so dissapointing to hear songs recorded ,what I would call, unprofessionally. Tracks ending abruptly. Fading in or out at the wrong places. Canned music,blended in, is not exciting. But, It's got a lot of great moments and brings back good memories. Voices aren't always great but I guess there wasn't a lot of material to choose from.

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.

They earned the title "Magnificent Moodies" early on. The assemblage of the BBC tracks only further solidifies the reward. While the double package is called "Live At The BBC 67-70" there is more! The second disc is audio from TV tapings.

If you are a collector of must have Moody Blues recordings this entered the list the second it left the factory. For those that purchased some of their material in the past it will give you another side of the band. The track listings couldn't be a better representation of the collective genius from the group. Not only are the hits and radio tracks available for your enjoyment but some of the more esoteric and underrated tunes ("Best Way To Travel", "Visions Of Paradise, and "The Actor"). "Best Way To Travel" has never received the acclaim it deserves. While previously tracks were available as a bonus on special SACD pressings, this gives it to you in the full and proper dose.

Before we check out some of their superlative versions of their own material it must be written how great the cover of the Animals hit "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" was constructed.

The back-to-back combination of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Ride My See-Saw" offers enough exquisite beauty to enthrall the harshest critic but "Lovely To See You (With the acoustic guitar sounding as if it is in your living room) could accelerate the pulse of the most docile individual.

Good Sounding Moody Blues Stuff!!.......2007-06-12

I was waiting for this 2 cd set to come out for a long, long, time. The sound is pretty good and the song selection is excellent for the time it was recorded. At least on this BBC recording, unlike other BBC live recordings, it doe not have an announcer before each song with on occasion, a one question interview with a band member. I find that part unnecessary and am glad its not on this set. The only problem I have with this set is the editing. Moody Blues songs usually have great endings to their songs but on this release the endings are cut off and an audience applause in put in rather bluntly at times which cheapens the recordings. The sound is great for a BBC live set-average stereo but the songs seem cut off and shortened in places--- I guess to save room for other songs. This results in the whole song version not heard at times. That is probably the only thing wrong with this 2 cd set. It ought to be re-edited and the songs presented the way they were played--take out a few if you have to but lets keep the original song in. Despite this problem, I recommend this set highly. Do not let it get away. Enjoy Moody fans!!!!!!!!!! Good linear notes and pictures also.

Historic stuff.......2007-06-01

If you have the new SACD special editions of the "core 7" original albums you've already heard most of these tracks. They were added as "special material" to those releases. However, as the other poster mentioned if you didn't want to spring the big money for albums you already own here they are, collected on two discs. The quality is no great shakes for the most part - mostly mid-range and brittle highs, but these date from over thirty years ago, and for radio to boot. The performances in many cases are a bit suspect as well; in some cases the instrumental sections sound identical to the studio versions with live vocals added. I think the Moodies did occasionally do this, considering how dense their studio recordings were it's no wonder. Other tracks however are totally live . . . they're ragged compared to the studio counterparts but have a wonderful energy that makes them a treasure on their own terms.

The studio albums are definitely the best way to acquaint one's self with these songs if you haven't already, but for the hardcore fan this is a very worthwhile release to add to the library.

A Christmas Gift Long Overdue!.......2007-05-26

Just as I was about to post a scathing review criticising the way the BBC material was spread out among the new deluxe editions, I saw this upcoming release and smiled. It's like waking up one morning and finding a gift from some Christmas long ago that you knew was there but couldn't find. For years I have been wondering why the Moodies haven't released their BBC sessions like artists such as Hendrix, Cream, Jack Bruce, The Who, The Beatles, Zeppelin, and even Kaleidoscope have done. Then I saw that they were releasing the material but you have to buy the original albums (which most of us have done more than once)again to get it all. Finally, in one complete volume, is everything that was salvaged from the vaults. It's like the Moodies reunited completely, jumped in a time machine, and made a new album for a new millenium. I am giddy in expectation of this collection!

Passage of years has done nothing to dim this star...........2007-04-27

As time passed by, my sense that this and "Out of Our Heads" were their finest efforts never really left me. Not to say that enormous chunks of wonderful stuff didn't follow, of course, unlike many bands who peaked on their early releases and never challenged again. I just loved the raw passion in the way they covered material like "Not Fade Away" "Hitch Hike" and "Walking the Dog," and made it their own. To me, these well chosen covers were much more appealing than some of the later "middle of the LP" songs from their own writing. And, as for "Tell Me," it just doesn't get much better than that!

Good debut, but..........2007-03-15

...I agree with many of the critics who think the Rolling Stones 1963 singles would have made for some nice, but necessary bonus tracks. Otherwise a good debut from the boys. There are some great tracks here, like Not Fade Away, Route 66, I Just Want to Make Love to You, Honest I Do, Little by Little, I'm a King Bee, Carol and Tell Me. But, later in the album the boys start to run out of gas. Can I Get a Witness, You Can Make It If You Try and Walking the Dog are pretty weak. Also track 5, Now I've Got a Witness is filler.

Let Me Hear Ya!.......2006-07-19

This is The Rolling Stones' debut album and it's a good one at that. Consisting of mostly covers, this album takes you on a journey through blues and R&B that no other debut album ever could.

It all starts with the Buddy Holly cover, "Not Fade Away", a song that will get you snappin' your fingers until they're numb(well, maybe not since the song is pretty short.) Next comes Nat King Cole's "Route 66". This song kicks it to with Mick's soulful voice and some superior guitars by Keith and Brian. They do an especially good job with Willie Dixon's "I Just Wanna Make Love To You". The song is very fast and is a good mixture of blues and rock 'n roll, a trademark the Stones would develop in the late 60's. "Honest I Do" is a good bluesy number but is easily forgotten. "Now I've Got A Witness" is a instrumental written by the Stones themselves, in tribute to asong later on the album. The song is okay but the organ is just silly. It makes me feel like I'm at a baseball game. "Little By Little" is a good catchy blues number co-written by the now infamous Phil Spector. "I'm A King Bee" sounds a lot like "Little Red Rooster" and the Stones do a outstanding job on Chuck Berry's "Carol". "Tell Me" is the only Jagger/Richards composition on here. This song is somewhat underrated; it is a warm and fragile ballad with some great vocals by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Next comes my personal favorite, Marvin Gaye's "Can I Get A Witness" This song is so happy and silly that you can help but smile when you listen to it. "You Can Make If You Try" is just average, the silly organ from "Now I've Got A Witness" is featured on this one too. Mick Jagger's voice is so goofy on this song that it's a bit surprising at first. Last but not least is "Walking The Dog", a funky R&B song.

This album is essential to any fan of The Rolling Stones.

Do You Think They Knew?.......2006-06-11

"Route 66," "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Honest I Do," and the rest of the songs on this record show us the influence of the Blues on Rock and Roll. I have to admit that I came late to the Stones and haven't really paid much attention to the earlier stuff, till my friends and I decided to review their records. I spent a week with this record, "Out of Our Heads" and "Aftermath," playing them over and over again, so that I'd have a good understanding and appreciation of them when we got together to write our reviews. Wow, is all I can say. I appreciate them now, and I think I understand them, they are just plain down and out Rhythm and Blues records. Do you think they knew back then, when they heard this record for the first time that they were listening to what was going to become THE GREATEST GROUP ON EARTH, Really, do you think they knew?

This is perhaps the weakest album in the Rolling Stones 60's catalog. But don't blame the band, this is the record companies fault. Sure there are some great tunes here like She Said Yeah, Get off of My Cloud, As Tears Go By and some decent tunes like You Better Move On and I'm Free. But there's just too much weak material, songs like Talking About You, Look What You've Done, The Singer Not the Song, Gotta Get Away and Blue Turns to Grey feel flat. Then the live renditions of Route 66 and I'm Movin' On are alright, but feel like fun filler.

What I was sent is a DSD disc. It does not register as an SACD on my player. It sounds miserable.
What gives, has the SACD been replaced by this other format?

Not the Best, but pretty important.......2007-01-16

December's Children comes off as a rather uneven document of the Stones' song-writing prowess and a scattershotrock record in its own right. Nonetheless, their identity as a band distinct from the British invasion clones really emerges on these tracks.

Stupendously Fantastic.......2006-06-13

This is an absolute stunner of a record. The bad boys of Rock and Roll really go to town with Chuck Berry's "Talkin' About You," and Bobby Troup's "Route 66." The latter being one of the two live songs on the record. The timeless "As Tears Go By," written by Mick and Keith along with group manage Andrew Oldham," has got to be one of the signature songs of a generation. According to my folks, it was the Boomer's big make out song. Hey, I've made out to it too, the song really is timeless. The other Mick and Keith songs that I really like are "Blue Turns to Grey" and "Get off My Cloud." Brian's slide guitar on the live version of "I'm Moving On" is stupendous, in fact the whole record is stupendously fantastic.

The covers on this 1965 gem are a bit more obscure than on the Stones' first two long-players, not a bad thing for a band still getting its writing chops together (if admirably; "Heart of Stone" and "Surprise, Surprise" are particularly strong). If there were still doubts that these London kids had any business playing this music, a casually scorching "Down the Road Apiece" should have allayed them; the stomp they lay on Bo Diddley's "Mona" and Jagger's lazy drawl on the New Orleans obscurity "Down Home Girl" make for canny mood changes. --Rickey Wright

first off: make sure that you get the 2002 ABKCO remastered version of this album. Same goes for all the early stones recordings. The original cd versions had very inferior sound. The ABKCO remasters, on the other hand, are spectacular in sound. The bass is deep and powerful, and the guitars are so vibrant and clear, they sound like they are being played live right in your living room. As for the album at hand ("Now"), this was the stones 3rd record, and their finest up to this point. The record sports three excellent rockers: "everybody need somebody to love," "down the road apiece," and "oh baby (we got a good thing going)." a couple of great blues tunes: the funky, "down home girl," and their raw and fantastic version of "little red rooster," with wonderful slide guitar. My favorite track happens to be their haunting reworking of the bo diddley song "Mona," with its interesting rhythm and an outstanding vocal from jagger. The album also has the first jagger/richards penned hit: the pretty ballad "heart of stone," which made its way into the american top 20. A winner all the way, this is early rolling stones music at its best.

The first really good album from the Rolling Stones.......2007-03-15

This was a really good album once I got passed the long winded openers Everybody Needs Somebody to Love and Down Home Girl. They aren't bad, just a little long for my taste, but then comes a string of pearls...You Can't Catch Me, Heart of Stone, What a Shame, Mona, Down the Road a Piece and finally Off the Hook. Then came the rather flat, Pain in My Heart, but, then the album gets back on track with with three gems, Oh Baby (We Got a Good Thing Goin'), Little Red Rooster and Surprise, Surprise. If you like the Stones, but don't own their early works, this one is worth getting.

Enjoyable, but far from great.......2007-02-23

Like most of the other early Stones albums, there's good music here, but not enough of it. A couple excellent singles: Little Red Rooster is by far the best of their early blues covers, thanks to Brian's slide and harp and Mick's dead-on bluesman vocals; and Heart of Stone, a sullen R&B-infused rocker. A few of the originals here are derivative lyrically, but still fun: What a Shame is packed to the brim with clever hooks; Off the Hook has an entertaining harmonica part, and Surprise Surprise is pretty much all Charlie. That guy could drum, all right, why did he never take a solo? Anyway, Mona is also a solid tune, one of their best (and most underrated) early covers. As usual, though, I can't really speak for much of the rest: There's a good reason why songs like Everybody Needs Somebody to Love; Down Home Girl; You Can't Catch Me and the ridiculously over-the-top Pain in My Heart disappeared like they did. So there's filler galore here, but patient Stones fans will find a lot to like aobut Now!

This was the Rolling Stones third album. It features four original songs and eight covers of old rock and roll, R&B and blues songs. This is another outstanding album by the group. The covers (some of which are pretty obscure) are all excellent. And the four originals showcase the emerging songwriting talents of Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. In the UK, the Howlin' Wolf song "Little Red Rooster" was the single from the album, and it shot all the way up to #1 on the charts. In the US, the original song "Heart of Stone" was the single, and it reached #19 on the charts. Every Rolling Stones fan should have this CD.

Rolling Ahead 40 Years: Now! is Classic!.......2006-10-12

"The Rolling Stones Now!," recorded during 1964, was the Stones third (U.S.) album in less than a year and remains, to these ears, their richest and most rewarding 'early' album (by 'early' I refer to the group's first five, all distinguished by noirish cover art, each containing a mix of original material and covers). The debut, "England's Newest Hitmakers" is faster and more furious, and opens with the Stones' definitive statement of purpose, 'Not Fade Away.' And "12 X 5" features two glorious early hit singles, "It's All Over Now" and "Time Is On My Side" (how prescient those classics sound today!) and several gems recorded at Chess studios in Chicago, now, since Abkco's upgrade of the Stones 1963 - 70 catalog, presented in beautiful real stereo. But "Now!" - the exclamatory title conveys immediacy, a demand for attention - while lacking any hits other than the dark 'Heart Of Stone,' (which peaked at # 19 in 'Billboard') - is crafted to feel more leisurely, the sort of album you can play regularly for years and still find some new musical detail or emotional nuance. The songs are getting longer, the grooves deeper, more deliberate; there is a perfect balance of classic interpretations and superb originals (their best to date) that represent the emerging Jagger/Richards worldview, which is remarkably mature and keenly articulate considering that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were only 21, Charlie Watts and Brian Jones 23, and Bill Wyman 28 years old at the time of the album's release.
The Stones avoid obvious commercial concessions and instead take the listener via a tour de force through their romantic, wry, bemused, open-hearted, witty, sexy, and very funky conception of America (especially the American South), with material dating from the early 1940s into the '60s by Howlin Wolf, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett, Nat King Cole, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Barbara Lynn, and The Coasters (or possibly Alvin Robinson). And, "Now!" works as an aural equivilant of Chuck Berry's hot-rod trip described in "You Can't Catch Me" (which nobody could, of course) with its big full moon rising up above and New Jersey Turnpike In The Wee Wee Hours, and of course the inevitable state patrol on their collective trail....
This classic starts off by accident, happily, with the 'wrong' version (wrong for "No. 2" but right for "Now!") of "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love," sung with conviction but, typically, no sentimentality, a vocal whose mannerisms seem barely perceptable, so offhand is this take with its fleet bassline, driving drums and rhythm guitar half-hidden in the mix by the jangle of tambourines, and Keith's darting guitar punctuation. "Down Home Girl" could have sound forced, but Mick pulls it off with understated bemusement and delight as the band lopes along for nearly four-and-a-half funky minutes in their London-meets-New Orleans groove. Then a ride in that brand new souped up aeromobile Berry so poetically evokes, and that the Stones drive with casual aplomb. Bo's "Mona" is so deep and ferocious (you must blast this one at maximum volume) you can get lost in it, visions of Brian's orchestral jangle in the reverb and Jerome Green in the percussion, and for my money the utterly unurried yet intense pace of this masterpiece fits way better on "Now!" than on the U.K. edition of the Stones' debut. "What A Shame" is a Chess recording of an excellent original blues that Arthur Lee stole virtually word for word on Love's debut, a song of nothing ever going right that swings along brilliantly, Brian and Keith sparring and jabbing, Bill (perhaps along with Brian and Stu the most accomplished musician from the very start of the band) effortlessly adding tasty basslines, with one of several fine (even essential, in this context) performances from 'sixth Stone,' pianist Ian Stewart. Another original, "Heart Of Stone" is hard and dark (as dark as Andrew Loog Oldham's post-"Cockwork Orange" liner notes), a passionate antecedent to "Paint It, Black." (The theme is echoed in the album's fine closer, "Surprise, Surprise," and influenced a whole sub-genre of '60s garage punk).
The second half (or side, if you ever had the London-label vinyl) brings us back to 1941 with a thrilling "Down The Road Apiece" (the song really does become airborne from the first instrumental break!), through an audacious remake/remodel of Howlin' Wolf's "Little Red Rooster" in which Mick makes no attempt to replicate the awesome menace of Wolf's vocal, instead introducing a more feline, lithe, and utterly confident interpretation that is exquisitely complimented by Brian's haunting, fluttery, yet lethal slide guitar. A solid version of the Allen Toussaint-penned 'Pain In My Heart' (with Jack Nitzsche on piano) is perhaps the only track that's less than revelatory. One that certainly is would be 'Oh Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin'),' which fits together with J/R's 'Off The Hook' (and other early gems like 'One More Try') in stating a rarely emphasized Stones theme: of committment (even sacrifice), to the hard work required of relationships, real pleasure, and, implicitly, to the project that is The Rolling Stones.
It rocks, it swings, and sings of movement, lust, assurance, power, and making things work out. "The Rolling Stones, Now!" is quintessential, classic Stones and thus rock and roll.
