Atlantic Records has ridden musical trends since the late '40s; these seven CDs chronicle the first 28 years of the label's work in black pop, during which artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding oversaw the creation and flowering of soul music. Also included are classic tracks by the Drifters, Wilson Pickett, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Sam & Dave, and many others who walk through the dreams of R&B and rock & roll fans. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Lost Opportunity.......2007-03-24

The problem with this collection is not the music selected - a look at the tracks will show that. However, the sound quality is abysmal. I owned many of these songs as 45s and the music would often jump right out of the speakers. This collection sounds dull and lifeless. Atlantic used the master tapes made for the vinyl version released in the 80s, with all the limiting and compression needed to squeeze the music onto an LP intact. The rhythmic, driving quality of the bass is bled away along with the highs. A complete disappointment. Demand a refund.

3 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods.......2007-03-15

Disappointed to find that a selection like this is sent in a damaged state with scratches and scuffs to the CD box when the outer cardboard box is in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars essential.......2007-03-10

any serious music fan should have this. a shocking amount of great, great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Une magnifique compilation.......2007-02-14

5 out of 5 stars The real R&B sound !.......2007-02-02

Very good CD's set. Buy a part of the R&B of the 20th century with these discs and get back in these fines years! I can listen to very famous tracks, and many more I have discovered with a lot of pleasure. This set is boxed like a LP set. It failed by contening only 8 dics ;-)

This is a 1-CD sampler of songs taken from the box set entitled "Crescent City Soul: The Sound of New Orleans 1947-74." The full box set is rare and going for big buck$ these days, so this sampler is worth its weight in gold, as far as I'm concerned.

It starts off just where it should, with Fats Domino's "Fat Man Blues" and continues on through a myriad of well-known and lesser known artists' best tunes. Whether it Fats, or the original recording of "Bon Ton Roulet," or Dave Bartholomew singing "The Monkey Speaks His Mind" or the original version of "Fortune Teller" ..just too much fun.

The beauty of this collection is that original New Orleans R&B is a unique sound, different from Memphis, Detroit, etc., and this CD brings to life that difference in a way that makes you smile, just like one would smile when one sets foot in the Crescent City for the first time. God Bless New Orleans.

4 out of 5 stars Traces the blues from the Delta to Chicago's South Side.......2006-03-23

Traces blues from the delta into the heart of Chicago. In the process, moves from something close to Alan Lomax folk archive to proto-rock and roll. First Muddy Waters (1948) is just him with a acoustic guitar (!). Recognizable urban blues does not appear until 1952 (Eddie Boyd). Settings at the beginning are spare to empty. They fill out progressively, presumably as Chess gains production skills. Stand-out: tr 14: Howlin' Wolf (passionate abandon; full spectrum of color in his voice). Excellent recording detail on cuts. 5 out of 5 stars I'm Hooked on Chicago Blues.......2004-05-13

This disc and its companion (1957 to 1967) introduced me to some great music. I already owned cd's by a few of the Chess artists, but these discs opened my eyes to others. Etta James knocked me out on 1957 to 1967; How could I have overlooked her for all these years? I put her box set on my wish list! All of the Chess 50th Anniversary discs enjoy excellent sound quality, especially considering the age of the tapes used. I was especially impressed by the sound of the lates 40's and early 50's material. I have never heard anything from the 40's that equals the sonics of the 40's songs on this disc, and I have many old jazz discs from that era.

4 out of 5 stars 4½ stars - a great starting point for the curious.......2003-06-06

Opening with blues legend Muddy Waters' first hit, "I Can't Be Satisfied", "Chess Blues Classics: 1947 To 1956" collects 16 blues numbers from the late forties and early-to-mid fifties.

It doesn't offer anything of interest to the seasoned blues fan (who probably has all of this material already), but if you're a newcomer and would like to explore the world of classic Chicago blues, this CD is a really good place to do it.

The compilers have picked some great songs, particularly Sonny Boy Williamson II's superbly swaggering "Don't Start Me To Talkin'", Little Walter Jacobs version of "Blues With A Feeling", Muddy Waters' "I Just Want To Make Love To You", pianist Eddie Boyd's classic slow blues "Twenty-Four Hours", the thumping proto-rock of Bo Diddley's "I'm A Man", and the awesome Howlin' Wolf's eerie 1956 single "Smokestack Lightnin'".

This is prime rib; it's only a little slice of what Chess Records have to offer, but it gives you a very good idea of what you're in for if you decide to go down the blues road. In time you will probably want to go looking for albums by the individual artists, but until you do, "Chess Blues Classics" and its companion volume "Chess Blues Classics 1957-67" is as good a starting place as any, and better than most.
(If you're looking for your first blues purchase, you may also want to check out the excellent double-disc "Chess Blues Guitar".)

5 out of 5 stars Essential recording for both Blues purists and casual fans.......2000-11-12

OK, how can a true blues fan not purchase this album? If you're clinging to the Delta sounds of Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson, this compilation is worth hearing. When Muddy Waters moved to Chicago in 1943, he single-handedly gave birth to electric blues. This is the blues here that has directly or indirectly influenced ALL blues music today, as well as helping create the birth of Rock N' Roll. There is no shortage of great talent on this album. Sure, all the usual suspects are present on this album; Waters, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Willie Dixon, but the album also gives wonderful introductions to Little Walter, Jimmy Rogers, and Sonny Boy Williamson, among others. Here is the first hand experience of the earliest of electric blues - Chicago Blues.

Sadly, the stellar efforts of these bluesmen would come to prominence by way of versions performed by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Clapton and Hendrix. Now, true Chicago Blues can be heard in all its aching glory. And lastly, would it really seem like old school blues if it wasn't in mono? I think not.
