The Kronos Quartet have been luminaries of modern Western classical music for more than thirty years. So despite their previous forays into world music, a headlong dive into the alternative universe of Bollywood (Bombay-plus-Hollywood) soundtracks may seem somewhat incongruous. But Kronos leader David Harrington is a longtime fan of composer R.D. Burman¹s florid pop extravaganzas, which propelled an already saturated palette into day-glo and beyond. To get the project off the ground, he had to convince one of India¹s prolific and versatile "playback" singers to come on board. The legendary Asha Bhosle is a renowned Burman interpreter so securing her services was a major coup. To replicate the reverb-laden "wall of sound" typical of Burman arrangements, Kronos and Ashaji, accompanied by Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain and Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man, overdubbed themselves into a teeming multitude. However, there is nothing soulless or "canned" about the results; indeed, composer and singer emerge refreshed and more vivid than ever before, shaking their stuff amid swirling Technicolor veils of tongue-in-cheek mystery and sensuality. --Christina Roden
Album Description
Sumptuous and surreal, the Kronos Quartet and Asha Bhosle's You've Stolen My Heart is not unlike the colorful, melodramatic Indian film musicals to which it pays tribute. Eight of its twelve tracks feature superstar Bollywood film playback singer Asha Bhosle, widely considered the world's most recorded vocalist. The songs were chosen from the repertoire of her husband, the late composer R.D. Burman, who revolutionized the sound of the movies produced at Mumbai's (formerly Bombay) fabled studios, a.k.a. Bollywood.
Customer Reviews:
Warning: this CD is addictive.......2007-01-12
Now in her early 60s, Asha Bhosle's voice has matured since the heyday of her Bollywood career in the 60s-70s and in these reworkings of some of her greatest hits (written by her late husband R.K.Burman) it's positively honey-like. The collaboration with Kronos Quartet is inspired: substitute electronically enhanced violins for Duane Eddy guitars and you have an inkling of the ideas flying around the disc. The liner notes are informative and there's plenty of information for the Bollywood novice. However, whether you understand Hindi or not, this is a collection of songs - humorous, romantic, tacky, and at times so hilariously naff in the way of Indian homages to western pop it's actually cool! I would be amazed if you don't want to keep going back to it, once heard.
Clever, but...........2006-04-07
Chronos has always emphasized being clever over being musical- although they are splendid musicians- and this album is perhaps the ultimate exegesis of that. The actual music is perhaps exotic, to western ears, but it is also uninteresting. Indian film music combines the sound of the East with the banality of pop, and the result isn't anything that bears more than one listening; personally, I was continually reminded of the incidental Indian-themed music that kept popping up in the Beatles' movie "Help", although that soundtrack was a bit more clever. Another volume for the library of the die-hard Chronos fan, perhaps, but not necessarily anyone alse.
Bhosle, Pavrotti, Sinatra.......2006-02-12
Some vocalists are one-of-a-kind, brilliant and beautiful, setting the standard for their particular music. Asha Bhosle is one of them. I heard her with the Kronos in performance in San Francisco, and they took my breath away. This album isn't quite the same as being there but it's very, very close. Asha, Kronos - please do it again!
Cheap music.......2006-01-02
I dont know how the kronos quartet to come down so low. The music is cheap. I couldn't hear any of the tracks completely. They were so insipid.Complete waste of money. I have heard much better from Asha.
I Think They Should Have Selected a More Contemporary Singer.......2005-11-05
I love Asha Bhosle and one only has to listen to her Live at the Albert Hall album. Problem is, she has aged, and her voice shows it. Regrettably, her vocals on this album constantly remind me of this and I can't listen to the album with pleasure. I would say the same of such wonderful singers as June Carter and Amalia Mendoza. This was a wonderful opportunity to introduce much of the world to the zaniness of Bollywood movie music, with its fabulous arrangements and wacky use of all imaginable instruments from all over the world. Instead it makes me sad to hear Asha not at her peak.

You might not recognize N'Dambi's name, but if you own Erykah Badu's Live album, you've already heard her voice. Better known as Ms. Badu's favorite backup vocalist, N'Dambi is destined to become one of the brightest stars in today's burgeoning neo-soul movement. The Dallas-based artist's debut creation, Little Lost Girl Blues, was self-released under the auspices of N'Dambi's own Cheeky-I Productions. It's a well-crafted gem that deserves a much larger audience than its limited distribution has cultivated. The album opens with the spoken-word mood composition "Picture This," and from there journeys into explorations of scat-laced jazz ("The Meeting"), textured soul ("Can This Be Love"), and lushly retro R&B ("What's Wrong With You"). The album's signature piece is the achingly beautiful "Sunshine," which pairs the artist's straightforward vocals with a spare acoustic guitar line. N'Dambi's style is more substantial than Badu's, less mannered than Amel Larrieux's, and infinitely more complex than Angie Stone's. All comparisons aside, N'Dambi's talent speaks for itself. --Rebecca Levine

Perfect.......2007-08-04
What a tight project this is...I'll have to admit I have been sleeping on this one and I jst actually picked up this cd in Atl at the International Soul Music Summit last weekend...I picked it up to look at it and this brother was like Yeah sis thats a hot cd... And he was ooh so right...I love every track on this joint...What a smooth vocalist she is...another great talent...Badu sure knows how to pick umm...
Little Lost Girls Blues.......2006-11-20
I was lucky enough to get my hands on this cd before the store ran out of copies. I loved her voice on Erykah Badu's live cd and knew that I'd probably enjoy N'Dambi's debut. The tone of her voice reminds me of Nancy Wilson - her voice is warm & her scatting throughout some songs is stellar & the musical production on the disc as a whole is excellent making it another great entry into the alternative r&b field.
My favorite tracks are: RAIN, SOUL FROM THE ABYSS, THE MEETING, PICTURE THIS, WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU, CAN THIS BE LOVE & THE SUNSHINE
If you're an Erykah Badu fan, you'll enjoy this disc too.
GIMME THE BLUES.......2004-10-28
I love this CD!
Why is this woman not more successful? This cd is excellent!!!
Just as good as anything Erykah Badu has done.
1.the sunshine
2.can this be love
3.broke my heart
4.lonely woman
5.see ya in my dreams
are my favorite songs...
WONDERFUL.......2003-05-28
Wonderful CD to drive in your car to on a nice summer day!
good stuff.......2002-11-09
The beats on here is what I apreciate the most, she has like the best Jazy background music I have ever heard. Her voice is similar to "Kelis" but deeper. This is good chill back and relax music. She just needs to up her lyics a bit, and use her voice more, like the way she sung on "Crazy world" and "the sunshine".
Overall it's very much worth the money...Her beats are better than Jill Scott's and Erykah'.s

The Meat Purveyors broke up after the 1999 release of More Songs About Buildings and Cows, but the Austin quartet couldn't stay away. All Relationships Are Doomed to Fail is a welcome return, and from the disc's first note it's clear that the layoff hasn't hurt a bit. Never a vocal powerhouse, Jo Walston succeeds with spunk and charm, and she's swept along by the crack team of Bill Anderson (guitar), Pete Stiles (mandolin), and Cherilyn diMond (bass and backing vocals). They're in fine, frenzied form on cuts like "Hey Little Sister," "Truckers Speed," and a cover of Ratt's '80s metal hit "Round and Round," all of which raise a cloud of dust and probably a few eyebrows at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Stringed Instruments. No mere speed freaks, they can also take things down a notch, whether with a campy cover (Abba's "S.O.S.") or a straight waltz ("2:00 A.M.," "Circus Clown"). --Anders Smith Lindall
Album Description
There's a lot of talk these days about how bluegrass is back. The Meat Purveyors are here to make sure that it's not done too sweetly, too kindly or too safely. Using all the tools at their disposal-mandolins, fiddles, crack songwriting and a baaad-ass singer they've created a record that pays due reverence to Ralph Stanley and RATT, respectively.
Customer Reviews:
I love the Meat Purveyors!.......2004-07-01
I was recently introduced to the Meat Purveyor madness at a show in Kansas City. They are great! I know have all their recordings & can't wait to see them perform again in August. Their style of music is energetic, rough & great to drink a beer to. If you can sit still long enough! Great CD, great group!
alt.bluegrass--more bluegrass than alt.......2004-01-13
A punk-addict through & through, i was recently turned on to real/roots/alt country by an album that isn't even part of the genre. I pick up Frank Black and the Catholics new Album (show me your tears) and was blown away by the country-rock/punk numbers of this ex-pixies ingeneu. This in turns leads me to explore more country, less punk/rock bands. I fired up Itunes Music Store and purchased a bunch of neo-classics, from Uncle Tupelo to the Flying Burrito Brothers (gram parsons). I end up noticing some of my purchases are coming from a label called Bloodshot Records, so i took a gander at their website. So, I buy this album (the meat purveyors) after looking through the site. I am not disipointed. I would say this: I would be dissipointed if (coming from a punk/rock background) had bought this album 1st, before buying a load of alt-country bands. But after listening to the former, I found myself wanting more and more country and less alt. And that's what this is. Actually, I would say bluegrass, not country. But it still holds on to it's edgy quality. The vocals are loose and colliding and slip and snap, i don't know-- maybe comparable to Le Tigre's stylings. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it adds that insurgent feel to the music that I like. This band can play fast and hammer on their guitars and mandolins, etc. or go out for a slow waltzy number. I find myself going back to the slower more roots-like classic-feeling songs. The lyrics are not bad. I would love to see them stretch out with them more, though. I would say, if this band wrote some great lyrics of regret, and sin and redemption or some ironically strange and edgy wit songs, they would really shine. I hope they come and and play in Detroit sometime soon. I'm curious about this band's live show.
Easy listening.......2002-05-03
As a first time buyer, this album didn't impress me much to begin with because their sound was not as big as I had expected. But many of the songs stuck with me in a good way. Tunes that stand out are their versions of Abba's SOS and Nick Lowe's Without Love, and the original Thinking About Drinking.
The sublime joy of the Meat Purveyors.......2002-04-26
The world greeted the news that the Meat Purveyors had broken up with tears, hair pulling and gnashing of teeth... well, that's how I reacted, anyway. Imagine my joy when I heard that they were back together and on the road, with a new CD out to boot.
And boy are they back together, because I don't think there's a throwaway track on this CD. You can always count on three things from the Meat Purveyors: Knockout musicianship, interesting covers and awesome originals. Lucky for us, all pistons seem to be firing and they are in superb form on this release, perhaps their best yet.
Just to let the Meat Purveyors know, there's always space on the floor of my apartment for them to crash on, if that would help get them out to Colorado. Their live show is not to be missed!

Vesta Williams at Her Best!.......2006-03-14
I made a purchase of this CD back when it was first released. I remember at the time thinking to myself why was it not getting the exposure and airplay that it so rightfully deserved. I am here again to make a purchase of this CD again before it goes out of print. The one that I have is worn out due to getting much play (I plan to take better care of this one). Vesta put her foot in this one bringing in a the album concept. It shows Vesta really singing and interpreting a song, as it should be song with out all the overkill and drama that she can some time do to a song. For those of you who rate this Relationship CD one star maybe your looking for the acrobatic of her Congratulations and Special which is fine but a real singer need not sing every song to the extreme to get message across. This CD starts out mellow and ends mellow and can be appreciated in the true Quit Storm tradition. Her cover of You and I penned by Stevie Wonder is one of the best renditions of this song I've ever had the pleasure to hear.
Pick This Up!.......2005-10-18
This is a very good offering from a singer that has been around for a little. I can't understand what some people were listening to in order to give this CD only 1 star. This CD is a mature, soulful and jazzy. My favorite cuts are I Have To, Somebody For Me and You Still Do It.
Pick up this CD and it will be in heavy rotation in your CD player.
Totally Underrated!.......2004-12-09
I can't believe this album received bad reviews. It's one of the few that still stay in rotation on my CD player in my house and Car. Vesta gives you something to bop your head to, snap your fingers at and contemplate about. This is a grown folks CD, so if you're use to the screaming, R&B or Pop-wanna be divas, then don't bother because you surely will be disappointed. Kudos to Vesta for letting her sounds and voice grow.... this is a great driving CD too... cruise on...
Better Material Needed!.......2003-03-05
Other than "You Still Do It" this one's
not a great album. Here's the solution:
Hire one great songwriter, one great
producer and try again Vesta. Try Brian
McKnight or Leon Ware.
SOULFUL SEXY AND JAZZY.......2003-03-03
I like this relaese the best of all...its got so much soul with a hint of Jazz..Vesta sizzles on this realese from start tio finish.

Album Description
Kiki Ebsen is a singer/songewriter who explores human relationships with great passion, emotion and honesty. Her melodies are unforgettable and her music is deeply moving yet easy to listen to. This CD is beautifully produced in earthy, organic surroundings. The title "Love loud" means "to show great love and compassion in life and share it with others".
Customer Reviews:
What a great CD!.......2000-11-06
Singer/song writer Kiki Ebsen has got to be one of the great discoveries of this century! (okay, so it is early... be that as it may). I have her first CD, "Red", which I've already replaced once, due to excessive use. In "Red", Ebsen's song-writing skills are aptly showcased in artful jazzy/pop arrangements, keeping the mood elevated with rare glimpses of the emotional depth hidden in the lyrics (such as in songs like "Candle" and "False Hopes") I'm glad to say that "Love Loud" plunges right into that depth and stays there, confidently plucking at emotional strings you never knew you had. I have never felt so emotionally and creatively purged while listening to a CD. Few jazzy, stylized arrangements to hold you back from emotional involvement this time, just that voice and some mostly accoustic instumentation. My favorite cuts include: the passionate "Powerful Natures of Love"-which I dare anyone not to end up humming by the end of the day; "Cry"-where Ebsen arranges haunting background vocals with flair and creates a driving melody; "These 4 Walls"-featuring a Chris Isaacs-like vocal perfomance that displays range as well as power; and "Avenues", where her voice takes on a tragic poignancy seldom heard since Ricki Lee Jones' first album. This CD is a must for anyone who has ever traveled down life's darker roads in search of love.
A rare find you're sure to enjoy!.......2000-10-24
If you're looking for soulful, fresh music that inspires then you've got to check out Love Loud! I was turned on to Kiki Ebsen's music by a friend and must say that she is one of the best new singer/songwriters that I have had the pleasure of listening to. Her diverse melodies and meaningful lyrics are artfully crafted and make for a cd that you can listen to again and again. Each track has something unique to offer, but my favorites "these four walls", "fire", "angry young soul", and "end of the road" are truly rare finds. In particular, "fire" is a refreshing mix of instrumental and vocal sounds that is sure to break through to the mainstream. Her music exudes a purity and originality that new music lovers are sure to appreciate. Ms. Ebsen's talent and heart come shining through in Love Loud. Check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Loved the CD ... great listening music, at home or driving along in the car, stirring ballads, romantic and rocking dance tunes, beautiful melodic voice. Went to see Kiki perform ...extremely enjoyable performance.

I feel lucky when I get to hear a combination of talent, musicianship, and artistic passion like I have heard on the album Love Loud, and that is why I gave it five stars. As far as the subjective aspect of whether the music has a significant positive impact on the listener, I can only say yes it has for me. Since I do not typically choose to listen or not listen to songs based on the degree to which they do or do not conform to a certain style, or sound like some other artist(s), I do not feel I have anything useful to say in that regard about this album.

Album Description
The hilarious Christine Lavin literally shines in live performance as she straps on a miner's headlamp and twirls her glowing batons. But the real sparkle comes from Lavin's sung and spoken wit - this singer-songwriter-guitarist regales and involves her fans with riotously acute original songs, comic monologues, quizzes, contests, and, in this case, her quest to identify Mr. Colorado Springs in the audience at the 2003 benefit concert captured on this CD.
"Sometimes Mother Really Does Know Best" is the award-winning Ms. Lavin's seventeenth album in a recording career that stretches back to 1981. Some songs here have appeared on her previous CDs, but never like this! One of Christine's signature compositions, "What Was I Thinking?," resurfaces with updated needling of Martha Stewart, while the affectionately rueful "You Look Pretty Good for Your Age" is wrapped around Christine's search for Mr. Colorado Springs. Five other favorites are captured "live" for the first time, including the tropical ordeal of "Wind Chimes and the anthem of the uncoordinated, "Ballad of a Ballgame." There are also three new songs here.
At least half the fun of this CD comes from Christine's giddy but incisively sarcastic song intros and a half-dozen comic monologues. "What kind of a ridiculous glamour trajectory am I on?" conveys her outrage at being mistaken for an ex-nun and a lunch lady; "Bernice, Carol, and tonight's crowd compete for the science prize" is a quiz that involves such brain teasers as "How many roads MUST a man walk down before they call him a man?"
Armed only with a guitar, a Boomerang sampling device that multiplies and delays her vocals into harmonies and swirling rounds, a wry, mocking self-awareness and boundless insight into contemporary culture, the Christine Lavin live experience is just as funny when heard at home, as preserved on this disc. Lighten up and laugh for almost 75 minutes!
