Fairly decent collection.......2006-06-08
For the price, you can't go wrong here. However, I feel compelled to respond to the previous reviewer's challenge.
Boston - Amanda
ELO - Don't Bring Me Down
Styx - Lorelei
BTO - You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet
The Guess Who - Share the Land
Rare Earth - Get Ready
Santana - Evil Ways
Three Dog Night - Eli's Coming
Sugarloaf - Don't Call Us, We'll Call You
Grand Funk - Locomotion
Lynyrd Skynyrd - What's Your Name
Atlanta Rhythm Section - Spooky
Little River Band - Lonesome Loser
Kansas - Carry On My Wayward Son
There, One other hit from each of those bands
No brain damage either :)
Inaccurate track info?.......2006-03-09
Maybe I have a one and only, but track #11 is not Sweet Home Alabama. On my disc it is Lola by The Kinks.
"Supergroups" is a misnomer here.......2005-01-13
Best of the 1970's "Supergroups"? This is the best group of songs they could come up with? Music from bands like Boston, Kansas, Styx, ELO, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana and BTO are great choices. But, who in their right frame of mind would consider Grand Funk, Rare Earth, Sugarloaf, or the Little River Band as "Supergroups"? Okay, the Little River Band had several hits, but they certainly weren't "Super". Some of these bands are so dang obscure that I could DARE most of America to name ONE other hit from half the bands on this disc, and I'd bet they'd pull a brain muscle and hemmorhage trying to do it. 14 total tracks. 7 songs are worthy classics, but the other 7 totally miss the boat. If I were producing a disc with these songs, I definitely would not have used the label "Supergroups". Perhaps a more apt title for this CD would be "Poor Man's Hit & Miss Tunes From The 70's". Sound production is less than crisp. Makes a nice drink coaster.
Good Stuff.......2003-01-07
Not a bad collection of 70's stuff, every song on this CD will be pleasing to the ear. Boston, Santana, ELO and others are represented as well as many other groups. If you are into the music of the 70's then this will fullfill all your expectations.
Great Collection!.......2002-05-19
If you're like me and don't own all of the original (albums!) tapes from these bands, then you'll love this CD. I often try to find classic rock compilations that have REALLY good songs on them, but most of the time I only like about 4 or 5 songs on any one collection. Not so with this CD! I snapped this one up because I totally enjoy every one of these songs. And several of these bands were one or two hit wonders, so why buy the band's whole tape in order to get one or two songs? Okay, so I'm not a die hard fan. Whether you have the original tapes or not, you'll like the variety and awesome guitar on this collection of classic 70's rock.

Customer Reviews:
Not much variety found here, but still a good compilation..........2002-03-24
It's unfair to criticise this compilation CD for it's lack of content because it's available at such a low-price. Still, only boasting *nine* tracks makes you wonder if Priority Records actually took this album seriously. It's wrong to label this a 'rock' collection too as there's a lot of different musical styles to be found on "The Best Of 70s Rock Chart Toppers". No-one could ever class 10CC, Bonnie Tyler, Gary Glitter and Foreigner as being the 'same'. Even so, this is a worthwhile purchase, and despite my minor criticisms, this CD comes recommended.
"Hot Blooded" by Foreigner is a good opener, but not one of my favourite tracks by that band. "The Things We Do For Love" by Britain's 10CC is more pop than rock - and the same can be said for E.L.O's, "Don't Bring Me Down". Both are great songs, but should you ever get the chance to hear any of their other songs, you'll agree both bands aren't exactly 'rock'. Robert Palmers, "Bad Case Of Lovin' You" - a track that is sometimes just called "Doctor Doctor" is a perfect example of what soft rock would transform into the following decade. "Rich Girl" by those perennial soft-rockers, Hall & Oates, and Toto's, "Hold The Line" are two other main-stays on 'easy listening' radio stations and should be familiar to you. Bonnie Tyler - the petite Welsh rocker with the powerful voice - contributes to this CD with her "It's A Heartache". This is one example of a singer who was better *later* in her career. "Radar Love", from the Dutch(?) band, Golden Earring, follows. This is nothing special, making it the weakest track on the CD. The album concludes with Gary Glitter's 70s classic, "Rock N Roll Part 2".
There's a few good tracks on here that makes this CD worthwhile, and the low-price makes it worth purchasing. So long as you don't expect anything *special*, "The Best 70s Rock Chart Toppers" will be a welcome addition to your CD collection.
Jon.

Customer Reviews:
not original artists recordings.......2007-04-14
The songs on this cd are harder to find and a fun mix, however I was disappointed that they are all not original recordings. The groups at least, are remakes, perhaps with a band member or 2, but NOT Original as recorded. I believe some of the solo artist songs are original and the live performances are real. Just disappointed they are not all original. So if you are looking for the real thing--this isnt it.

The Very Best Of??????????????????????????????.......2004-10-21
This album takes two great songs "Sky High" and "Who do you think you are?" by one of the greatest bands ever in music (Jigsaw) and then pads out the rest of the album with "newly recorded material."
Seeing as Jigsaw were active from 1966 to 1982, to take 2 songs from this 17 year period and then add 10 new songs and claim it's "the very best" Jigsaw has to offer is insulting to the record buyers. It is a studio album with 2 old hit's on if anything. It's like Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney getting together in 2004, making 10 new songs and adding "Hey Jude" and "The Long and Winding Road" on and claim it "The Very Best Of The Beatles".
Did I mention these 10 new songs are the worst songs I have head put out by Jigsaw? I noticed their bass player, Barrie Barnard isn't on the cover of this album. Did he refuse to be part of this? Let's assume he did.
That means Clive Scott, Des Dyer and Tony Campbell got together one day (it can't have taken them more than a day to put 10 crap tracks together surely)? and decided to reform after 13 years and make their worst album.
One listen to a song like "Strategy" makes me believe Scott, Dyer and Campbell began to think they were a mid-1990s Stock, Aitken and Waterman, who themselves thought they were a 1980s Holland, Dozier and Holland (which they were not).
Jigsaw never had a huge budget to record with (their best stuff was recorded at Splash Records in the 70s and 80s, one of the smallest British labels of it's time) but the poor production of these 10 new songs make it sound like they had a budget of 30 million dollars an album in their heyday when you compare the old with the new.
The only thing this record had to offer in 1995 was the fact it was the 1st Jigsaw CD, so fans who wanted the two original hit's could get them on CD.
In recent years, thankfully, Tarragon records have issued a CD, also called "The Very Best of Jigsaw" which actually contains 24 tracks from the groups original albums on the Splash, W.E.A and B.A.S.F labels. That CD is far superior and Clive Scott, Des Dyer and Tony Campbell should hang their heads in shame over the new songs on this collection, they are capable of so much more as proven by the original Jigsaw material!

Customer Reviews:
Sounds GREAT..........2006-11-16
I am going to review many Time-Life items that I have purchased over the years - Sounds of the 70's, Sounds of the 70's (Take Two), Legends of Rock & Roll, numerous 60's CDs & 50's CDs. The recordings are excellent and I know all the tunes - most have at least 18 songs. I would recommend any of Time-Life's compilations to anyone, who is looking for a great CD with alot of songs, we all know. The only complaint I have is that the CDs should have been maximized on the 50's & 60's selections. All in all, a very good purchase...
