Customer Reviews:
This is a KILLER collection.......2006-11-10
When you listen to this, you cannot help but say to yourself "how incredible the talent roster was for this record label". Not only did you have this very special array of vocalists but, for the most part, it was the same house band playing on all of these memorable songs.
Stax will always have their nemesis, Motown, but they should not be considered competitors. Both labels were great yet they were apples and oranges, completely different. Motown was pretty and melodic while Stax was funky and dirty. Stax also had a much more muscular sound, musically, so their house musicians got a lot more accolades. I enjoy Motown but I love Stax!
There is no need to talk about song highlights since these are all classic hits. The nice thing here is that Stax gave you variety. You have funk, you have duets, you have love gone bad, you have man hating female vocalists, you have bluesman, you have thumping bass and greasy guitar, you have killer horn sections, you got Jean Knight singing "Mr Big Shot"...this has everything...pretty, hard, loud, soft etc.
For the Stax fanatic, you will know all the songs but most people are not fanatics they are simply just loooking for a great compilation. If that is you, you will say to yourself "I did not know all of these great artists and songs came from the same label".
This cd works on many levels. It is a great compilation of classic soul songs, it satisfies the hard core collector who wants all of these tunes, it operates as a GREAT party cd/driving cd and lastly, it is a piece of history that showcases how the South interpreted soul.
If you like this then there is a part II with slightly more obscure tunes, a lot funkier and bluesier, yet just as satisfying.
DO NOT BE FOOLISH, BUY THIS!
Keep your Motown, I'll take Stax.......2005-10-29
When all my friends were digging Motown I was digging Otis and Johnny and Sam and Dave and Eddie and Carla and so on and so on.
Motown is good. It's black folks making music for white folks, but Stax was black folks and white folks making music for folks who like their R&B stripped down and basic and raw. There never was and never will be a singer better than Otis Redding. There will never be a back up band better than Booker T and the MGs or the Bar Kays.
Stax (an amalgam of Stewart and Axton the founders) and the affiliated Volt label put out the best ever music. It stands the test of time. It was a moment in time that was brief but golden. This album is just a sample but if it peeks your interest, and if you love soul music, it will, then go from here and appreciate Otis Redding and Johnnie Taylor and Eddie Floyd and all the great talents that passed through the Stax/Volt studios and came under the guiding inflence of the legendary Steve Cropper and company.
Funky R&B @ it's best.......2003-12-20
I love R&B music of the 60s and 70s. Although I live in Memphis, I have always enjoyed Motown music the most and never bothered to study the Stax music made right here in Memphis. Wow! The body of Stax records is incredible and it's interesting to listen to this music and compare to Motown's music. The sounds are both great but very different. I strongly recommend this album and encourage you to listen and compare to the writers and musicians from Motown. It competes very favorably.
GOLDEN YEARS OF SOUL.......2003-04-22
Immerse yourself in the gorgeous Stax sound from the golden years of soul! Every one of these 20 tracks is a gem, from Sam And Dave's opening number to Isaac Hayes' shimmering Theme from Shaft (1971). Eddie Floyd's Knock On Wood has been much covered, for example by Amii Stewart in the late 1970s, while Mr Big Stuff, also from 1971, is the only track of Jean Knight's besides her later 1980s hit My Toot Toot that I'm familiar with. And what a voice and attitude she has! The instrumental hit Green Onions is well known to all, as is Otis Redding's classic Dock Of The Bay. Little known classics include Mel & Tim's Starting All Over Again and In The Rain by The Dramatics, the latter with thunder and rain sound effects. My favourites on this essential album include The Staple Singers' addictive Respect Yourself and I'll Take You There, a delicious marriage of gospel and soul. The Stax sound was a bit more rootsy than Motown, but the melodies were just as beautiful. This precious music just improves with age.
Love (of Soul) Keeps Them Together.......2000-02-24
The Stax/Volt story has two acts: the first, when the label was run by Atlantic Records and featured the royalty of Southern soul (Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Carla Thomas, Booker T. & The MGs) and act two, when Atlantic took its share of the label's masters and, after a short period of continued success, the label faded away.
The reunion of one of popular music's richest libraries occurred some years later. "Top Of The Stax" becomes a one-disc, 20-year joyride of classic R&B from the label's first #1 (Booker T & The MG's groovin' "Green Onions") to its last (Issac Hayes' sweeping signature song, "Theme From Shaft.") Along the way, you hear from father Rufus Thomas (the salacious "Push and Pull") and daughter Carla (the sweet "B-A-B-Y"). Johnny Taylor shows up with two ceritified gold hits, the hard-hitting "Who's Making Love" and the bouncy "Cheaper To Keep Her." The Dramatics and the Soul Children chime in with two Quiet Storm ballads, and Little Milton slaps the blues with the R&B Top 10 "That's What Love Will Make You Do." You'll know these songs; they've been covered by every rock n' roll bad boy from Mick Jagger to Billy Idol to the Blues Brothers. But nothing beats the originals heard here. Highly recommended.

"Natalie Cole - Greatest Hits, Vol. 1".......2007-07-20
THE CD CAME IN RECORD TIME AND IT HAD ALL THE GREAT MUSIC THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR.
Wonderful Music CD.......2007-07-05
Natalie Cole's greatest Hits are really a great CD with many wonderful songs and melodies.
Missing the best song :-(.......2005-12-11
I like this cd a lot. Natalie sure has had a lot of great songs over the years. One song in particular (which of course as luck would have it) is missing from here. A Little Bit of Heaven (from a now unobtainable cd Dangerous) is my all time fave of hers. In the mean time, I still love Miss You Like Crazy etc. This is a good cd for all Natalie fans - and even if you aren't - because there is a good mix of older and newer material. I give it a four because of the mix, but minus one star because of the missing hit.
Why the live versions? And where's Vol. II already?.......2005-06-03
I want to love this, really I do. But Rule One of a Greatest Hits disc is to actually use the hit version of the song. "Our Love" and "Mr. Melody" are here in unnecessary live versions. ("Lucy in the Sky..." was live from the get-go; I don't like it but at least it's the "correct" version.)
If there's ever a Volume 2, it needs to have the above hit versions plus such omissions as Sophisticated Lady, Someone That I Used To Love, Jump Start, Dangerous, A Little Bit of Heaven, and Starting Over Again. What's the holdup? Even U2 put out hits discs faster than this...
Not a bad collection of hits, but............2005-01-11
...this CD is missing somethings. First of all, who wants to hear a watered-down short version of "I'm Catching Hell"? It was Natalie's rap/monologue intro on the unedited full-length album version that really made this song so great. (The full-length version can be found on Natalie's "Collection" CD).
Secondly, the classic hit "Can't Stay Away" is missing. (A remake of this song was later made famous by En Vogue on their debut album in 1990). Thirdly, this CD contains the live version of "Our Love" instead of the original studio version. The live version ain't bad, but it is the original recording that we grew up listening to and appreciate the most.
Again, this ain't a bad compilation (as it contains some new '90's material as well as the classics), but I'm just a little disappointed with some of the content and especially the sequence of the songs, which lacks consistency and chronology.

Well...........2007-02-11
They could have excluded the "rap" versions of some of the classics on this cd. Give me the original versions only. Overall, very good though. Maze fans will love it.
Great for both the soul lover and the funkateer in me........2005-09-11
Seriously, we get some smokin' slow jams and other hard funk numbers. My favorite has got to be Joy and Pain with Kurtis Blowe...I'm not a big rap fan but still love Kurtis' rap in the middle. I also love While I'm Alone, Golden Time of Day and Before I Let Go with Woody Wood. Every song on the album is great, and it's perfect to listen to late at night, when the lights are low and you're working on your computer. It really helps get the mood going.
Whether you want to dance or chill, you've got it here.
Can't get enough of Frankie Beverly and Maze!.......2005-05-15
I am definitely old school when it comes to my music and would recommend this CD. I saw Frankie Beverly and Maze in Indiana when Happy Feelins' came out (late '70's?), in Sacramento in 2002 and in New Orleans at the Essence Festival in 2004. They still sound just as great as the first time I heard them and I never tire of listening to this group. I also have their Back to Basics CD and Live in New Orleans DVD. They are always the last act at the Essence Festival each year and the audience gives mad props to them, which is much deserved.
One of my favorite "Greatest Hits" CDs. .......2005-03-13
Maze is a really good, really long-winded R&B band for the uninitiated. Trust me, this is some pretty funky stuff. You'll especially appreciate it if you listen to it with Parliament and/or Earth Wind and Fire. The best three songs are:
1. While I'm Alone
2. Joy and Pain (with Kurtis Blowe)
3. Before I Let Go (with Woody Wood)
Although just about every other song on this album is good. By the way, I'd recommend you buy this with "Millenium Collection Parliament" and "The Best of Earth Wind and Fire, Volume 1".
Jammin'!.......2004-07-16
I was raised on Frankie Beverly and Maze and there is nothing like their music! My boyfriend and I have gone to see them live and their show is always jammin! This CD is one that stays in my cd player for days. Some of my faves are Golden Time of Day, While I'm Alone, Happy Feelins', etc. You gotta buy this CD! I have TWO..one for the care and one for the house! ahahaa =OD

Bobby Bland's purr-to-a-scream vocals quickly made him an R&B star in an era when rougher-hewn blues masters such as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf had fallen from the charts. Bland, a former valet for B.B. King, established himself with both up-tempo workouts ("Farther Up the Road," "I Pity the Fool") and devastatingly subtle ballad readings ("I'll Take Care of You," "Stormy Monday Blues"). Greatest Hits, Vol. One is a generous sampling of the discs that made him a steady seller throughout the '60s. A second CD chronicles his work in the '70s after Duke Records, his longtime label, was sold to ABC. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
--.......2004-01-26
Along with Joe Turner, Jimmy Rushing and Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Bobby Bland was a rarity in the legacy of classic blues singers in that he was a singer who didn't play an instrument. However, unlike Turner, Rushing and Hawkins, Bland didn't come out of the jump/big-band tradition where such a dynamic was more commonplace.
The songs on this disc are not Bland's earliest recordings, but they are early, spanning 1957-1969 with an emphasis on the years 1960-1962, and they're his best and most seminal recordings. Not only that but the compilation comes at such a bargain price that even those unfamiliar with Bland would do well to pick it up.
Bland and his music, under the direction of bandleader Joe Scott, had a decided showbiz bent due to Scott and his orchestra that made generous use of horns as well as the usual guitar, bass and drums. The greatness of Bland was that his genuine and soulful stylings transcended the 'sweetening' agents of his accompaniment. That's not a knock on Scott and his orchestra though, for Bland's sound anticipated what came to be known as soul music in the '60s. Bland, well-groomed and dressed in a three-piece fronting an orchestra is something that really does it for me image-wise. He wasn't one of those other blues singers like John Lee Hooker who looked like a street musician thrown on a stage. Some would see Bland in a lesser light or less genuine than someone like Hooker because of his show and orchestra but that's b.s. Half those 'serious' blues musicians were just mailing it in and living on an image anyway, and these days they all are.
Included in this compilation is 'Farther Up the Road', Bland's first hit, later made more famous by Eric Clapton. On 'Cry, Cry, Cry' and 'That Did It' Bland loses his mind to a pleasing effect. The Brook Benton-penned 'I'll Take Care Of You' utilizes a haunting, spooky organ overdub that works as a nice wild-card element and 'Yield Not To Temptation' includes a manic hand-clapping beat and female backing vocals.
Great music, great price - what are you waiting for?
a great talent.......2000-01-24
Bobby blue Bland has always had the goods.this disc showcases his talent.i've also enjoyed the stuff that he has done with B.B.King.a good solid disc.his vocal style is one of a kind.

This a superb and generous collection of dance-era classics. There's a nice variety of sound and texture across this set. Most selections are full-length, which is very important to us die-hard 70's club music fans. If you have not ever heard Jackie Moore's monumental contribution to classic disco, "This Time Baby," do not deny yourself one minute longer. It is the "absolute bomb."
Jackie Moore.......2005-04-15
Can't believe two others said "get this for the Jackie Moore song." That's exactly why it's been in my cart. There are about a dozen songs that transport me back to the dancefloors of the late 70's when I was a disco twink. This is one of them. Absolute perfection!
Agree 100% w/ Frederic White.......2004-06-02
Worth it just for the Jackie Moore track, 'This Time Baby'...
one of the great lost songs of the era.

Yes, the 1996 reunion album Home Again rocked, but it wasn't quite the tour de force everyone was expecting. That's because what was so great about New Edition was their irresistible blend of bubblegum pop and sweet soul, the kind responsible for hits like "Popcorn Love" and "Candy Girl" (guided, of course, by the hand of producer Maurice Starr, who went on to recycle these songs for white-bread clones New Kids on the Block). Included here is also the song that inspired Boyz II Men's name, and one of the prototypical new-soul ballads, "Can You Stand the Rain." "Count Me Out" and "Cool it Now" are bundles of fun, but not nearly as fun as simply hearing those voices at their tender beginnings. Who could have known they would go on to dominate the world of hip-hop and R&B in the '90s? --Rebecca Wallwork
Customer Reviews:
Bubble gum music you don't have to be ashamed to love.......2006-06-12
Okay, okay, so we all know that the Jackson Five were the original "Boy Band" trendsetters.
Singing teeny-bop songs and breakin' it down with cool dance moves would be a formula New Edition pimped and passed along to Boyz II Men, New Kids On the Block, N-Sync, Backstreet Boys, 98 Degrees and any other boy-band I missed.
I can honestly say, however, it's still cool 2 say you liked New Edition (which I'm sure ain't being said about all of the aforementioned groups, LOL).
This LP is the one to own because it really does have all of their greatest hits.
The love ballad "Can You Stand the Rain" is a classic, classic jam I think still sums up what real men are looking for in wifey material (among other things, LOL).
"Boys to Men," "Mr. Telephone Man," "Candy Girl" and "Popcorn Love" all sound dated, but if you're into this kind of R&B music you'll still enjoy hearing oldies but goodies one more time.
Recommended purchase.
Beware of the "Boys To Men" remix version on this CD.......2006-05-27
I think this CD has a good collection of New Edition's hits but as a big fan of the song "Boys To Men," I was unpleasantly surprised and disappointed to find that the CD contains a remixed version of this song. The remixed version sounds awful in my opinion--this song did not need the addition of electric drums--but maybe that's because I really love the original. If you're also a fan of this song, you may want to listen to the remixed version before purchasing.
Don't waste your money.......2006-03-25
I'm a huge NE fan, so when I purchased this album I was so excited but after listening to it, I could've played better music myself. You can tell that the cd was done with keyboard programming. The sax was the only instrument that was played by an actual person, and the rest of the programming was horrible. If you have the rest of NE's albums, you don't need this CD, unless you just want to add it to your collection.
New Edition's Best Greatest Hits CD.......2004-08-06
"New Edition's Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" is an extroardinary R&B CD that definitely proved why New Edition was one of the greatest R&B acts around in the 1980's. My most favorite hits of all time on this CD was "If It Isn't Love", "Can You Stand The Rain", "Count Me Out", "Candy Girl", "Cool It Now", and my all-time favorite "Mr. Telephone Man" which was written by none other than Mr. Ray Parker Jr. If you are a true fan of New Edition and if you truly know the history of this group that paved the way for other boy bands in the 90's and 21st century, I would recommend this CD.
Perfection!!.......2004-05-26
This is an unavoidable must have!! These cats are great & so is this album!!!!!! Artist don't do it like this no more.

"Pretty" good; Focuses on Late 80's-to 90's dancepop........1999-08-03
This record is a fine compilation of tracks from 1982 to 1996. Focuses mostly on their dance pop stuff. Highlites enclude their biggest hit "Catch Me I'm Falling", as well their 1984 single "Nightime" which is sublime, the sparkling "Let Freedom Ring," and "Better Better Be Good To Me," which sounds a lot like a Spice Girls song (and I mean it as a compliment.) This is a good showcase for their lead singer, the fierce Jade Starling. Go Baby Girl! Go Baby Girl!

Flavor, flavor, flavor, nuthing but flavor! Over 2 CD's and 20 tracks, DJ and Producer Cleveland Anderson unearths some sweet sweet music! Top tunes, each with a distinguishable beginning, middle and end. CD1, track 1 kicks of with Kim English's anthem NITE LIFE (MAW remix). Like rapper Black Rob says, WHOA! Listen to MAW werk their remix magic! Amazing minimal garage bliss!
If you love gospel inspired house, Cleveland, Su Su, Spen and Karizma take y'all to church on CD1, track 7 THANK YOU! Sing along with me children,

semi sucked.......2006-07-10
gone fishin is the only good cut on the entire cd, there are some others that are "un-skip-able" but otherwise its a mindless background compilation of off brand bama no names. consistant fake neo-soul electric beat throughout the cd can be annoying if you have been there before. i would have been mad if i paid more than $10 for it. it serves its purpose as a stuck in traffic soundtrack, however, i find myself listening to "gone fishin" over and over again.
NEO-SOUL AT IT S BEST !!!.......2005-05-18
Hidden Beach has done it again!!! This is one of best undiscovered neo-soul albums out there. It's the kind of album you put and everyone says: "Who is that?" Several undiscovered artists are ont his album.Every song and artist like Mike Phillips will keep you in that neo-soul music. If you're a lover of neo-soul, this album is a must have.
Hidden Hits on The Radio Finally www.iM4radio.com.......2003-12-08
This cd his packed with raw uncut talent. You can rock this one from beginning to end. Track #19 is my favorite, but you can hear all of them on www.iM4radio.com all day every day...you can even call and request songs. Enjoy!
