Despite its title, director Whit Stillman's follow-up to Metropolitan and Barcelona isn't really about disco at all. It's more a story about young people coming of age, friends all a bit out of touch with the direction in which their lives are headed. So it makes sense that the songs included here--mostly disco chestnuts--are far from groundbreaking. Contributions from Alicia Bridges, Diana Ross, Chic, and Sister Sledge are safe bets that give the film its Studio 54 shadings. Eveyln "Champagne" King's "I Don't Know If It's Right" and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' "The Love I Lost" may the lack the quirks of "Doctor's Orders" by Carol Douglas and "Let's All Chant" by the Michael Zager Band, but it still makes for a solid, fun collection of disco tunes. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars Back In The Day.......2007-05-29

The film "Last Days of Disco" opens with the Carol Douglas recording of "Doctor's Orders". I saw the film a couple of times and couldn't shake that song, so I bought this soundtrack. This really takes you back, but it's a fun trip. If you were around then (1975-1980), I don't have to tell you what a dream it was, especially if you lived in New Orleans or some other big city. As I remember it, responsibility was practically non-existent! If you are too young to remember, take it from me, the main object was pursuit of pleasure, pure and simple (well, not so pure.) Lots of disco standards on this disc ("I Love The Night Life", "More, More, More", "Got To Be Real", "Good Times", "Knock On Wood"), as well as some I didn't remember so well. And I must mention that Miss Ross is represented by "I'm Coming Out". So, if you want to go back to that fabled time, here's a pretty good place to start your journey.

5 out of 5 stars Good Music.......2007-03-24

A great CD to listen to on a saturday night.
A good late 70's Mix

5 out of 5 stars just what i needed.......2007-01-17

a compilation of some of the classics from the disco era, what a fab cd.

5 out of 5 stars MOST COMPLETE DISCO COLLECTION.......2004-07-28

This is the most complete disco compilation that I've ever found. It's got just about everything to get your disco collection jumpstarted. Great for playing at parties-you can play it all the way through without having to skip through any tracks. The thing I like best about this album was that the song, Let's All Chant was on it-very rare to have that song on an album of this caliber. Buy it-trust me-you'll love it.

4 out of 5 stars A Great CD.......2000-11-10

I agree with the review above...the cd is great, but the movie was dumb. Don't waste your money on the movie, buy the cd instead!

In an era when most old rock stars are left to recycle their greatest hits for megatours and MTV Unplugged, it's refreshing to know that Van Morrison still pours on all the originality and wit he had when he made Moondance. On Days Like This, Morrison continues his lifelong exploration of the human psyche, offering up highly entertaining and danceable (yes, danceable!) tunes about everything from love to manic depression. As always, Morrison's vocals rumble along through intelligent lyrics, plowing up a range of emotions almost too numerous to catalog. Needless to say, the sweet, soulful harmonies of Morrison's adroit backup singers and Pee Wee Ellis's fabulous horn arrangements serve as fabulous counterpoints to Van the Man's energetic and pointed performances. When all is said and done Morrison sums it up best in "Songwriter," a self-effacing ditty about the job he has done, and still does, so very well. --L.A. Smith

5 out of 5 stars my allmost intro to the man.......2007-02-21

This is actually the record that mad me decide to like this guys music. I heard the 'best of' allready and that made me very curious.
There's something on this record that makes me feel at ease and happy. Perfect Fit really puts a smile on my face. But the favorite track must be Ancient Highway. This is where Van really gets into it. Untill this day he didn't make a song like that anymore; which is a shame. The backing band on this cd is very tight. A very diverse record that I never get tired of.

4 out of 5 stars Slow Dancin With Van.......2006-04-30

This review refers to "Days Like This"(CD)..Van Morrison

As a collector of Van Morrison Albums, I had to have this album. After reading the mixed reviews here, I was expecting something less then mediocre. However, and to my delight, I was once again swept away by Van's lulling voice, the great music and musicians to be found here. I've had it on my changer for the past couple of weeks, and there's no sign of it ever coming off!

"Days Like This" has 12 tracks mixed for easy listening, romantic evenings and swaying to the music. Opening with "A Perfect Fit", with some wonderful horn arrangements, Van will then play "Russian Roulette" with your mind. Grab your honey for a nice slow dance in a beautiful duet with Shana Morrison, "You Don't Know Me". Another duet with Shana is the lovely "I'll Never Be Free".

Although a 'mood' album, there were couple of the songs, that seemed too moody and a little out of place. "Underlying Depression", and "Melancholia" kind of bring you down after the others(my only reason for 4 stars instead of 5). Then "Days Like This"('When it's not always raining, when there's no one complaining...') and "In the Afternoon"('Wanna make, wanna make, wanna make, wanna make love to you..." get you right back in the mood.

The CD(Exile Prod.) is a very good quality. The music sounds great on the stereo. A booklet is included with words to most of the songs. Check out the words to the very pensive "Ancient Highway". See buying info for complete list of tracks. The CD runs close to a nice hour of tunes for Van Morrison fans.

"Baby, this could be the perfect fit..."(well, almost)
Enjoy...Laurie

2 out of 5 stars So Disappointing.......2006-03-19

I love Van Morrison and have done so for years. Veedon Fleece, St Dominic's Preview, Into The Music, Moondance, Enlightenment. I can't imagine my life without these albums. I would love to rate this CD better, but it is just so disappointing. Apart from 'Days Like This' and 'Ancient Highway' the dreadful backing vocals and utter, desperate sense of making songs just for the sake of it pervades this tedious, embarrassing album. There is precious little of any worth at all. If you are new to Van Morrison, please listen to something else, or you are likely to miss out on truly wonderful, inspiring music.

1 out of 5 stars Van's worst album..........2005-09-12

I have to place this even lower than A PERIOD OF TRANSITION- which was actually a very good album spoiled by it's mix- and INARTICULATE SPEECH OF THE HEART- which was weakened by watery synths and gauzey production, but gets extra points for it's reckless disregard of any commercial sense. I even place this lower than YOU WIN AGAIN- which in all honesty I've only put on twice, and not managed to hear in it's entirety.

DAYS LIKE THIS is actually a crying shame because half of it is very good. Remove the painful duets with his banshee daughter Shana Morrison, and get rid of "Perfect Fit" and "Songwriter" (his worst song ever) and you're left with a satisfying album, with some really great late-period Van songs. In fact, subtract those four songs and you've got a dead-ringer for Van's best album of the '90's. The only thing standing in it's way are the utterly clueless backup vocals from Brian Kennedy (who soured 2 albums and a live retrospective before finally making a perfectly competent turn on 1999's BACK ON TOP.)

5 out of 5 stars Van Still Continues to Amaze.......2003-11-06

Just like most Van Morrison albums, you can put "Days like this" on and just play it straight through and enjoy. I consider Van to be one of the best songwriter's of our time and he proves it again with this album and there isn't really one true commmercial hit on this album, which is unique. The title track along with others are enjoyable but other tracks like "underlying depression" and "Ancient Highway" are truly touching and emotional. I would recommend it to any old or new Van Morrison fan. I rate it in my top three favorite Van albums of all time.

This four-disc album--like the famed August 1969 rock festival it chronicles--is something of a sprawling, disorderly, engaging mess. Issued as a box set 25 years after the counterculture tribal gathering, it amasses the original three-record Woodstock set from 1970, its two-LP 1971 sequel, Woodstock II, and a generous store of previously unreleased tracks from Creedence Clearwater Revival, Janis Joplin, the Band, Jimi Hendrix, and others. There's plenty of chaff to go with the wheat (one is tempted to conclude John ("Far out!") Sabastian's blissed-out rant hasn't aged well, but it's just as likely most of the crowd at Yasgur's Farm would have gagged him if given half a chance, and Jefferson Airplane and Crosby, Stills & Nash clearly had better days). But Sly & the Family Stone, Joe Cocker, Santana, and Richie Havens shine, the stage patter has become part of the lexicon, and the whole package now stands as a remarkable account of a pivotal musical and cultural event. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars good - but seems lacking.......2007-07-05

I was excited to receive this as a gift from my wife. I have recently started collecting classic recordings - or at least those from artists who had a significant influence either in their time or over the years. Since I have just started building up my library, I didn't have any recordings of Woodstock performances - and a box set would seem the best approach.

While reading through the contents, it took a few moments to realize that this set represented just a fraction of the festival: Three days of music vs. 4 CDs. A great deal was omitted. I found this disappointing. I don't understand why a box set of the entire festival doesn't exist - or at least I can't find it. The recordings must be there (e.g., Hendrix's Live at Woodstock).

Aside from being only a fraction of the festival, the collection doesn't feature all of the bands that were present, some were significant e.g., Grateful Dead, Blood Sweat and Tears (but at least Sha-Na-Na made the cut, right?). While it might be understandable to abbreviate the festival to produce a more compact set, to capture the event from a historical perspective I would think the set should include a representative set - or at least song - of all who appeared.

Incompleteness aside, what can be said about what is included? The balance among the artist sets seems disproportionate. In some cases, the recordings contain almost the entire playlist for one artist, such as CSNY, Jefferson Airplane, while others received considerably less space in the set: Hendrix, The Who, The Band (but at least they were there).

What I found more disappointing was the editing of the discs themselves. The flow wasn't really there. Although I listened to all four discs in one sitting, I didn't think the essence of the event was really captured. It didn't blend well. I believe the order of the artists was preserved but it still didn't have the feel I think it could have. But then again, can a recording really capture the true spirit and experience?

All that said, I still think the set has some merit. There are some amazing tracks contained in the collection. I found the quality of the recordings good was able to enjoy the music (but I'm not a hardcore audiophile).

So, for someone such as myself who had but a few tracks from Woodstock performances contained on compilations, this set offers a nice starting point. If, however, you are searching for the set of a particular artist, you'll have to look elsewhere. I hope to see an unabridged collection appear before long.

3 out of 5 stars Nostalgic.......2006-07-28

Needed the Woodstock feel and sound. Missing the Grateful Dead. How can they leave out the greatest band in the land!!!!! The rest is fun.

5 out of 5 stars Woodstock:25th Anniversary.......2006-02-18

I am happy with this purchase. I was too young to be there, but this took me back to some awesome artist's performances. Even my own kids are enjoying it, even though they never heard of Woostock.

3 out of 5 stars It Could Have Been a Contender.......2006-01-06

Several CDs and DVDs are available that cover Woodstock. I still recall listening to the first vinyl album from Woodstock. I was impressed at the time, inadequate as that first recording was. There have been other attempts at capturing the Woodstock experience, each with their own successes and failures. I thought that a boxed set commemorating the 25th Anniversary of Woodstock would have been something that a fan of 60s cutting edge music would be a requirement for my collection. I was wrong.

This collection does offer the most music of any of the collections of which I am aware. However, this collection also removes some of the better songs from the earlier collections, and adds all new mistakes. My biggest complaint is in the flow of the music. The music is chronologically out of order, which makes this album more of an excerpt of Woodstock versus a representation of Woodstock. Second, Woodstock lasted for days, and someone decided that these four hours of music were how fans should remember Woodstock. I like much of the music on these CDs, but there is so much more and more that is better, and I feel short changed. There are a few more famous songs from the cutting edge artists, but how did Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (who I really like) get almost half a CD while other famous artists, such as The Who, get one song? Who picked this music?

I also recall that some of the previous Woodstock albums had more announcements and more talk on stage. This CD seems to have reduced that material as extraneous. I once thought the material was extraneous, but now, in my nearly old age, I find the extraneous material helps provide a better feel for the Woodstock experience.

I am also surprised that the sound was not more improved. I expected with improved technology there would be improved sound. The sound is better than the early Woodstock albums, but still not as good as I think it could be.

The 25th anniversary boxed set was an opportunity for someone to make a truly historic and meaningful music statement about Woodstock. Instead, someone seems to have picked artists that they may have thought were more popular or better remembered, and overlooked some of the more influential artists or songs. Opportunities such as this come along all too infrequently, and it is a shame that such an important opportunity was missed for this event. Wait for the next boxed set with six or eight CDs, with someone guiding that project with a vision of how to really represent Woodstock.

3 out of 5 stars Oh it's Good...But Sure Could've Been Better! .......2005-05-13

I got this CD box set for Christmas 1995 after I had just turned 19 years old. For years I had wanted a Woodstock collection that packed on a whole lot of the unreleased music from that 3 day event. Granted I had been listening to the original two Woodstock L.P. sets since I was 11 or so and was always a bit disapointed with both of those sets. For starters I was always pissed that on the soundtrack albums the songs were edited down. On the movie I heard exciting parts in certain performances, most notably Ten Years After and Sly and the Family Stone, that were cut out for the soundtrack albums. And the Whos "Summertime Blues?" Where was it? Guess they couldn't have had both "Live At Leeds" and the Woodstock soundtrack with the same song! Don't get me wrong! The original "Woodstock" 3 record set is awesome and is like a version of the movie all on it's own I just wanted the movie verions of the songs on there. Then came the Anniversary set that Christmas...

WHERE IS "I WANNA TAKE YOU HIGHER" BY SLY?!?!?! WHO DECIDED TO CUT THAT ONE FROM THE COLLECTION???? Could it be the master tapes were damaged on that song? I doubt it but I wasn't there when they were compiling this thing so I really don't know. WHY DOES JIMIS FINAL GUITAR SOLO ON "PURPLE HAZE" FADE OUT FAR TOO EARLY??? What was there not enough room after disc 4 got saturated with more CSN&Y than anyone really wanted??? WHY NO STAGE ANNOUNCEMENTS EXCEPT A SECONDS WORTH SHOVED AWAKWARDLY BETWEEN COUNTRY JOE AND TEN YEARS AFTER ON DISC 3???? I wonder if he ever made it to the Information Booth? IF JOHN SEBASTIAN PLAYED ON SATURDAY WHY IS HE CRAMMED UP ONTO DISC 1??? The first day of the festival wasn't all acoustic guitars mind you. WHERE'S THE RAIN CHANT???? You wouldn't have had to put the whole thing on there (who knows how long it actually went on) but a sampling would have been nice, big part of the movie you know. THE REMASTERING COULD HAVE BETTER ON SOME OF THESE TRACKS!!! The horn section of Janis' "Work Me Lord" hurts my ears in that middle eighth break there. The final "HIGHER" cries from the audience on the "Sing-a-long" sound so separated it's almost like they are digitally "sampled" instead of being on the master tape. AND NO MAX YASGUR SPEECH. I'm not even going to comment here on that one....disgaceful that.

Phew! What's good? Ten Years After ripping all 11 minutes worth of "I'm Going Home" (chicken scratching part included near the end). Johnny Winters "Mean Town Blues," 3 songs from the Bands set, CCR, the full drum solo in Santanas "Soul Sacrafice" (or so we are lead to believe), a little bit of Leslie West and Mountain, "Handsome Johnny" finally seeing light of day from Richie Havens, Canned Heat doing "Leaving This Town/A Change Is Surely Gonna Come." That's all good and worth it if your a big fan of this festival. Bottom line it gets 3 stars for being a GOOD box set but not a GREAT one.

With their feel-good humanism, uniquely rural perspective, and melodic blend of funk and rap, Arrested Development seemed like the next big thing in 1992. The group hailed from Atlanta, which was not then a capital of hip-hop and R&B, and this, their debut recording, won the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics poll. Speech, the primary lyricist, wrote and delivered eloquent attacks on gangsta rap's mindless nihilism: the band's first hit, "Tennessee," spoke of reclaiming Southern black traditions from the racism that sullied their memory, while their second, "People Everyday," deftly updated the Sly Stone classic. Although Speech's rapping style was not distinctive, Dionne Farris's keening vocals highlighted the band's front line. Unfortunately, Speech began to run short of ideas and the band failed to maintain the high standards that this debut set. They disbanded a few years later. --Martin Johnson

4 out of 5 stars Bring this stuff back...........2006-11-28

How refreshing to hear this kind of positive hip-hop, when the most of the world is drunk on the toxic garbage of 50-cent, P-Diddy, Ludacris, and Jay-Z.

There was a time when hip-hop showed promise by having intelligent lyrical content and thought-provoking introspection set to creative and original music from groups like Arrested Development.

When Ice-T was doing his morally-bankrupt "Cop-Killa" vomit, and Bone-Thugz-n-Harmony were glorifying the "gangsta" mentality that by now has been adopted into much of the hip-hop genre, A.D. was trying to send a different message. That women are NOT objects of marital infidelity and are not sex toys that you "hook up" with at the local clubs. And that Black culture is not about bling, blunts and "bitches". There are more beautiful, traditional and wholesome things to be proud of that sadly get thrown to the side for the more provocative and fleeting racy tripe that fills the screens of BET and MTV.

Standout tracks are Tennesee, Give a Man a Fish, People Everyday and Mr. Wendall.

If you're tired of the "Yo Dawg...spark up dat splif, grab my gat, and get-cho-freak-on" trash of today's rap/hip-hop scene, I recommend you check these guys out. It's much more satisfying (and edifying).

5 out of 5 stars The Most Innovative Group From Atlanta (5 stars).......2006-06-26

Before Outkast, Goodie Mob, and many other voices, there was a group named Arrested Development (Speech, Headliner, Baba Oje, Rasa Don, Aerle Taree, & Motosho Eshe) well known for spreading their African culture and vibes, along with positive messages comming from Atlanta.

One thing I like about this group is their style was mostly laid back and enjoyable. Most of the contributions of this album were the instruments that were used throughout this album. Speech, who does most of the vocals, makes lyrics that were made to create a positive environment like marrage on the song as "U" and getting a better outlook on religion on "Fishin' 4 Religion". At the same time, they were more for giving back knowledge to others in songs "Give A Man A Fish" & "Mr. Wendal". Other tracks that have a strong positive vibe are "People Everyday", "Tennessee" and "Washed Away". They sample a lot of old artist's songs on this album (a good one would be Sylvester Stewart's "Everyday People" on the song "People Everyday"), I like it though.

Overall, this was a very innovative album that came out in 1992. Unfortnately this album got over played, that people got tired of this group (I was about 7 when this came out, and I still remember the "Mr. Wendal" song), so when their 1994 album Zinga...(I dear not try to spell that name) came out, people turned the other way. I believe both of their albums should be heard. Also they would appear on MTV's Unplugged in 1993. If you can, try to hear one of the albums by this group, even it's a greatest hits album (they're tons of them floating around), because I pretty sure you'll love it. I recommend this to people who want to hear some African cultural vibes and music.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Baba Oje!.......2005-08-19

It is a true pity that our people are so eager to line the pockets of filthmongering materialistic hip-crap, and leaving eloquent and sincere artists like A.D. out to dry.

This album was positivity pure and simple. The message was strength but also intelligence. We can be poets too. The pen is mightier than the sword.

How many other groups out there subscribe to the African concept of respecting the elders? But Speech and Co. brought Baba Oje with them for spiritual guidance, and he gave them plenty!

The music is soft and deep and beautiful. An anthem for our people, and a prayer of hope.

5 out of 5 stars Who says rap has to be violent and vulgar?.......2005-08-10

I respect AD for having the courage of their convictions and being unafraid to state their beliefs unequivocally in their music. It's obvious that they have great respect for humanity and for their fellow man (all mankind).

"Mr. Wendal" is a very touching commentary on homelessness, "Tennessee" talks about recapturing a more peaceful time and lifestyle and my favourite track "Washed Away" talks about the gradual and slow moral degradation that takes place almost imperceptably.

This album is a classic because the lyrics are great and would still be great if this were a country & western album. My point is that the intelligent and heartfelt lyrics here would be at home in any genre and what is surprising is that it falls under the rap genre which is probably the one you'd least associate these days with intelligence, sympathy and concern for humanity.

AD may not have lived very long as a group but this album sure will and is destined to remain a classic for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Foundation of Greatness.......2007-06-20

After their first 2 albums, both of which i love, many of the groups original memebers weren't satisfied with were the group was & left. Maurice & Verdine had to start from scratch which led to the inclusion of Ronald Laws, Roland Bautista, Jessica Cleaves & more importantly Philip Bailey, Larry Dunn & Ralph Johnson. The latter 3 along with the White brothers would form the foundation of what was to become the greatest band ever! This album gives you a glimpse of the future greatness, it's funky, raw & full of energy. Great vocals, slamming bass & drums, funky guitar & outstanding horns all trademarks of the elements. For EWF fans, this album represents the beinning of a wonderful journey & i for one have enjoyed the ride!

5 out of 5 stars First and Favorite, still........2007-04-08

This album was my introduction to the music of EWF, it remains my very favorite. This is as much for the nostalgia it brings back as for the music.

The music is not an afterthought though. This is marvelous music. Maurice White's vision and the band's sound was never better than this document.

A must own for any EWF fan.

4 out of 5 stars A sign of bigger things to come from this group.......2006-04-08

I went to a concert at the University of MD (in the mid 70s) to see EWF, Mandrill, and Stevie Wonder- the bands played in that order.
EWF, while starting the concert first, stole the show, playing "Power," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," "Mom," to name a few- all from the Last Days and Time album. I've been a solid fan ever since! They still put on a great show. For the serious EWF fans, "Last Days and Time' is an absolute MUST to have in your collection! This is one of my favorite EWF recordings still!

5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2006-02-25

I remember this CD(ablum in my day)from my college days (71-75) and it's just as good as i remember. Murice and the gang (female singer then)are in top form, and the songs are great. I think this was their breakthrough ablum and it was just an indication of things to come.

4 out of 5 stars The Beginning of the Columbia Years.......2005-12-16

Well, let me first say that I love EWF, but I think I'm that rare fan who actually has a preference for the early stuff [the Joe Wissert and Charles Stepney produced material on WB and Columbia] as opposed to their most successful material from the latter part of the '70s. Why? Because it's "RAWER."

This album is the first Columbia album by what was the NEW, post-Warner Bros. EWF. It was both Philip Bailey's and Jessica Cleaves' debut...along with Ralph Johnson and Larry Dunn, and also featured a couple of guys who would depart after this album (saxophonist Ronnie Laws took guitarist Roland Bautista with him; Bautista came back in the '80s). It's definitely a transitional album as the band still sounds more like the WB-version of the band than the band that became the standard-bearer in black music by the end of the '70s. That's fine with me, though.

Most of the songs are solid if not spectacular, showcasing a band in search of its identity...funky but still heavily influenced by flower power...a few rough edges here and there. If for no other reason, though, fans will want to check out the studio versions of "Remember the Children" and especially "Power". These are a couple funky, guitar driven songs that show just how much of an influence Jimi Hendrix was on black music (that's another subject, though). Roland Bautista was by far the loudest and rauchiest of all of EWF's guitarits, and these two songs are his biggest contributions to the EWF legacy.

"Power" is the centerpiece of the album, featuring 5 different sections--a kalimba intro; the main theme featuring the sax (the part that most fans are familiar with); the center section featuring the wildest guitar solo on ANY EWF album; a quiet section featuring Larry Dunn's Rhodes and Ronnie Laws' flutes; and the final restatement of the theme featuring a wild clavinet solo by Larry Dunn (followed by a kalimba outro).

As you might be able to tell, this is my favorite song on the ablum and my favorite EWF piece of all time. It shows that these guys were first rate musicians. Yeah, there were more instrumental pieces on later albums (like "Zanzibar", "Africano", "Biyo", and so forth), but "Power" is the crown jewel. It showed they could go toe-to-toe instrumentally with bands like Santana, Mandrill, and early Funkadelic.

For the record, though, I recommend the album for SERIOUS EWF fans. If you're one of those casual listeners who only knows songs like "September", "Boogie Wonderland", "Let's Groove", and "After the Love Has Gone", well...you might be turned off.

4 out of 5 stars His Best........2006-11-23

I think this is his best CD. "Better Days Ahead" is completely smooth, not too much singing on here. His best melodies are played on the guitar. Preview the audio samples and you will hear how Norm played the lines sensitively, and with light touch. This is a tight band and crisp production. This is a very sensual CD. No cheap synth-sounds on here and No drum machine.

I bought it used here at Amazon for $2.00 sealed CD. What's the problem?
I don't want all the singers and R&B commercial stuff, just give me the Guitar Jazz and "Better Days Ahead" doesn't disssapoint. BRAVO!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album.......2004-11-25

Norman Brown is my favorite "groove" jazz artist, along with Chieli Minucci / Special EFX, Boney James, and Incognito. This album has a number of unique, interesting, and sophisticated tracks. My favorite is "Third World" which is one of the singles that got significant airplay on the jazz stations.

5 out of 5 stars Top of My Playlist!.......2004-06-20

The title track, "Better Days Ahead" is one of the best Smooth Jazz guitar-driven tunes released in the last ten years. It is always at or near the top of my playlist! It has a great melody and velvet harmonies. It's Norman Brown at the top of his game!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album!.......2004-02-03

How good is it? It's great! I've purchased it twice it's so good! It is definetely a classic in my opinion! Besides the great covers of R Kelly and Earth Wind and Fire, it has some well written pieces like: "This Time Around", "Better Days Ahead" (the title track), and my personal favorite, "Places in the Heart" which has a smooth fine wine type of flow. It's amazing how good he is at such a young age! Most guys I've heard that are this good are 50+ years old. If you like smooth Jazz with a funky R&B flavor, you won't find a better album!

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

Like most good lover men, Joe knows you can unzip more flies with honey than with hassles. This understated but seriously gifted singer/songwriter may not enjoy the superstar profile or recognition of some of his fellow R&B Romeos, but as his fourth CD, Better Days, proves, what he lacks in persona he more than makes up for in persuasive and sensual songs. There's a gentleness and ease in Joe's smoothed-out, sexy, and decidedly grown-up brand of R&B. Listen to the way his silky vocals glide over the ever-so-syncopated keyboards on "I Like Sexy Girls." Or hear how Joe concocts a romantic and realistic evening on the undulating single "Let's Stay Home Tonight." Even when Joe is trying to get his mack on, he remains a gentleman. It's that soft-spoken, from-the-heart approach, along with well-crafted tracks, that make Better Days a keeper. --Amy Linden

3 out of 5 stars A step down from the last never the less still good.......2006-12-29

It's no secret that JOE is a very talented soul singer. However after the mamooth sucess of My Name Is Joe, Better Days was released in time for the holiday seasons. Let's Stay Home Tonight," is a rather straightforward remix for the rap audience featuring Petey Pablo. The other collaboration, "Ghetto Child," is a bit more ambitious, featuring Shaggy and the Boys Choir of Harlem. Elsewhere, the emphasis is on Joe. There isn't a roll call of big-name producers here (though the Neptunes do make a showing), so Joe is left to carry much of the album's weight. He proves more than capable of the challenge on songs like the lead single, "Let's Stay Home but Ghetto Child was horrible as was I Like Sexy Girls. In the ballad department JOE offers up the goods on What If A Woman, Lover's Prayer and Alone. JOE has a classic album in his voice and hopefully one day he'll show us that promise.

4 out of 5 stars An Underated Talent.......2006-05-03

Despite Joe not receiving such wide acclaim as other of todays R&B stars, his work and acheivements should not be overlooked as he is without doubt one of todays most gifted songwriters.

On his fourth project, Better Days (2001), he diplays his growing versatility as an evidently serious recording artist. His work has great depth expoloring serious and relevant human issues and expresses genuinley deep, honest emotion. He has an undeniable flair for ballads with such offerings as What If A Woman, Alone and Isn't This The World. The gentle and sensual musical arrangements which have all the emphasis and elements of the modern day R&B sound are all beautifully mellow with each holding an undeniably timeless appeal.

The quality in his work is consistent throughout and the album does delve into urban, late-night R&B numbers such as the sultry Let's Stay Home Tonight, Ghetto Child (featuring an effective interlude from another gifted R&B artist, Shaggy), the playful I Like Sexy Girls and a few truly sensational numbers like Lovers Prayer, Changed Man, I Understand to name but a few.

There is such passion in his work thats it's questionable as to why his unique talent an work so far has been so over-looked but never the less it's quality what counts and tis album is just that. This is probably Joe's greatest album yet and had it been given te right radio air-play this could have easily have catapulted into view with the media. Superb and sensational and possibly is the modern-day Marvin Gaye.

4 out of 5 stars better days alright.......2005-08-08

This was not Joe's best album. In my opinion, he really has seen better days. I hate the fact that I can't listen to this album from the front to the back.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Some Good Dayz!.......2005-05-20

Joe does an excellent job on Better Days with his soulful voice and smooth ballads. Hands down, Joe is an exceptional talent that should be recognized. He's by far one of the best male singers out there right next to Luther Vandross. Joe's intoxicating love ballads leave you feeling loved, respected, and most all cherished as a woman. As a man his songs shows you how to love, respect, and appreciate your woman. This is truly a man who indeed knows how to appreciate a woman.

Joe demonstrates his tenderness on such songs as "What If A Woman" "Ghetto Child" "She Used 2 Luv Me" and the most beautiful song ever "Lover's Prayer". If you're looking for Better Days ahead, buy this album. I promise, you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A True Artist.......2005-01-23

This album did not get the appreciation as Joe's previous work. And while I understand the reason behind that,I still feel this album is a great piece of art. Well Joe did not stick to his winning formula for this album for the most part this is true. But, he did touch on topics that needed to be adressed such as teenage pregnancy, Domestic violence, ect.I guess and I hope he feels as an artist he has the power to affect changed. So It is my hope that he chose to do that, through the album "Better Days".So I not only ask that you pick up this album as a fan ,but I also ask that you pick up this album for your friends and family Who may see themselfs in the topics that are addressed in this album.
