5 out of 5 stars Aces High!!.......2005-06-09

Here is another terrific recording by the aptly named Amazing Rhythm Aces. This "amazing" band has recorded some of the best American music produced over the past 3+ decades. Russell Smith has, in cooperation with band mates and others, written some of his best songs for this set. The songs here compare with those on "Too Stuffed To Jump", "The Amazing Rhythm Aces", and all of the other masterpieces this band has given us. I recommend this CD to all lovers of great music. You can never go wrong with the "Aces".

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Singer You're Not Listening Too.......2003-01-25

Why, in the name of all that's holy, isn't Russell Smith a contemporary country superstar and household name? He's been around for years, both as a solo act and as the voice of The Amazing Rhythm Aces. The Aces have had their moments, and ever so often Smith releases a solo album. But everytime, the mass audience greets his work with a yawn. "The End is Not is Sight" is Russell Smith's latest work and it's beautiful. This collection of mostly new material (with a few nods to the Aces with the title track and "Third Rate Romance") showcases Smith's soulful lyrics and distinctive voice. Smith's style is a dose hill-billy boogie, a dash of blue-eyed soul, a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll, all stirred up in a toe-tapping stew that's mmmmmm-mmmmmm good. Whether it's the rocking rhythms of "Jesse" and "We're Gettin' Out of Here," or the sad-sweet ballads like "Walk These Hills" and "Look Heart, No Hands," Smith nails every track. Russell Smith is the greatest singer you're not listening to right now, and you should. And so should everyone who enjoys great lyrics, great music and inimitable vocals.

4 out of 5 stars Blue-Eyed Soul.......2002-11-02

Russell Smith keeps putting out great records. His latest is addictive! "Old School" opens with a sweet soulful midtempo track about a high school reunion. Russell croons with satisfaction on the acoustic "The King Is In His Castle," "He ain't got diamonds, she ain't got pearls, But God's in his heaven & all's right with their world." "The Road" wails with some tasty electric guitar. "Walk These Hills" & "Look Heart, No Hands" are ballads with pretty melodies. "We're Gettin' Outta Here" is a peppy midtempo rocker, "We'll never get outta this world alive; So we might as well have us some fun!" "What I Learned from Loving You" is a tear-in-your-beer country weeper. "Heartbeat in the Darkness" is one of my favorite tracks, a real upbeat toe tapper. "Third Rate Romance" brought to mind the version I love by Rosanne Cash as piano keys pound on this trailer park love song. "Jesse" is great outlaw rock. Russell saves the very best for last with the title track with its pulsing bass line, "Like a bird without a nest, like the stranger in the night & my soul cries out for rest & the end is not in sight." This CD is one to seek out because the songs are consistently strong. Smith varies the tempo, goes from soul to blues to country, all unified by that expressive voice. U Snooze U Lose! Wow!

5 out of 5 stars An astounding album!.......2002-10-26

The luminary musicians that have been assembled to help with the production of this album are testimony to what a talent Russell Smith is. The resulting album doesn't disappoint, with a range of songs lovingly fleshed out by (mostly) sparse productions that allows the vocals of Smith to shine through. The voice is a little deeper than it was back then, but the songwriting is, if anything, better. There are some awesomely good songs here, with satisfying twists to old themes. "Old School" is a good take on cheating songs, and "The Road" reworks views about...well, the road! My favourites are "Don't go to strangers" and especially "What I learned from loving you", which as with so many of Smith's songs resonates with experiences that I can empathise with.I also enjoyed the version of "The end is not in sight", and it bears comparison with a versions that he's recorded elsewhere. A look at the musician name checks suggests that everybody down at Muscle Shoals wanted a piece of this action, including Spooner Oldham and James Hooker.Put starkly, this is an album that whatever your musical tastes you ought to think about listening to, it's that good. Oh, and by the way, there's no mention anywhere in the packaging of the Amazing Rhythm Aces!

5 out of 5 stars Can't Describe It.......2002-07-09

Oh my word! This guy is just remarkable and this CD is a masterpiece. If you even remotely liked the Aces just order it now. The first five songs (all I've heard so far) are incredible. Got to see him live about a year ago and it seemed like he still had it even though the musicianship of the Aces had gotten a little thin. No such trouble here - a studio full of great players and the best singer/songwriter in the business.

5 out of 5 stars Best country soul album in years.......2002-06-18

This a masterpiece of country soul...if you like Dan Penn and Music from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, you will love this..*****

After the War, the Ravens and the Orioles were Soon Making an Impression. The Fifties Would See the Explosive Rise of Rock'n'roll and with it the Meteoric Ascent of Doo-wop Groups, Initially Black, Then Mixed and Eventually White. This collection is awesome. Although the Readers Digest CD Collection does have a lot more material, this collection is an A+ for any Four Aces Fan. This CD has great songs, all the number one hits and its presented in a beautiful CD case with pictures and nice biographical information. I would recommend this to any fan. 4 out of 5 stars Real Southern Soul.......2007-07-27

During the mid sixties there was no greater sound in the Carolinas than Bobby Moore and the Rythmn Aces. I saw Bobby Moore at ART"S SEASIDE ( a small beach side club near Charleston SC that also featured groups like the TAMS. This was Southern Soul in its finest hour. Searching For My Love and Try My love Again are the big hits.
While most of the songs are listenable, non reach the heights of these two hits.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Moore, a soulful giant and a true gentleman..........2006-02-20

I had the pleasure of working with Bobby Moore and the Rhythm Aces from time to time in the early 1970's in and around Montgomery, Alabama. He and his son Larry, singer Marion Sledge and the rest of the band gave me an education in live performing that became part of the foundation of my career in music.
His passing in February, 2006 is a great loss to the music world and he will be missed, but his music lives on. "The Hamburger Song" is a very early form of rap (although that's not what we called it when we performed it live back then). It was just a fun, different kind of song which was a big favorite and always got requested whenever I played with the band or enjoyed them as a member of the audience. "Searching For My Love" sounds as good today as it did the first time I heard it. God speed, Bobby Moore. Thanks for the music you gave us.

This compilation captures the subtle shift in Jamaican music from ska to rock steady around the mid-'60s, a distinction that is not always easy to make. Early ska is a musical grab bag of diverse elements. Rooted in mento, a folk sound that could be described as Jamaican Calypso, ska also incorporated R&B structures, Latin American horn choruses, and elements from the burgeoning Rasta drumming movement led by Count Ossie and his band. It even reprised the musical strains of African revivalist cults such as Pocomania. Rock steady, which would soon evolve into reggae, is said to have emerged when the dry, hot summer of '66 necessitated a slowdown by dancers and musicians into steadier tempos and simpler arrangements, and the new sound and dance were both aptly termed rock steady. This ska-to-rock steady period was also the heyday of the legendary ska big band the Skatalites, many of whose members had been students at the Alpha Boys School in Kingston and had played in various marching bands. The Skatalites' instrumental virtuosity, jazz influences, and military-tight arrangements are represented here most compellingly in "Dick Tracy" and "Man in the Streets," featuring the emblematic and melancholy slide trombone of Don Drummond, whose tragic death in an insane asylum after he murdered his beautiful dancer girlfriend adds a bit of frisson to the Skatalites-Drummond legend. But all the selections in this compilation possess that distinctive Skatalite quality of springboarding from deep-rooted folk tradition to the heights of jazz lyricism. --Elena Oumano

5 out of 5 stars Treasure trove of Jamaican music.......2007-02-19

This album covers early ska from 1963 to 1967 in a blend of instrumentals and vocal numbers. My favourites include Six and Seven Books of Moses by The Maytals as The Vikings, Mount Zion by Desmond Dekker and the amazing Congo War by Lord Brynner and The Sheiks, in which the civil war in the Congo in the early 1960's is discussed in a most colourful manner. Train to Skaville by The Ethiopians is another soulful, melodic track, displaying the diversity of this Jamaican style. Other artists here include The Skatalites, Don Drummond, Stranger Cole, Sir Lord Comic, Marguerita, The Soul Brothers and Eric Morris. All of these tracks were recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, from 1963 to 1967 and the instruments include trumpet, trombone, tenor and alto sax, keyboard, bass, drums and guitar. This is chugging great music!

5 out of 5 stars Another lost classic.......2006-12-01

Another out-of-print classic from Island/Mango. As with "Club Ska 67", this contains a nice mix of popular hits ("Man in the Street", "Train to Skaville") with more obscure numbers that aren't available on every other ska compilation out there ("Congo War", "Run Joe"). I used to have a cassette with this on one side and "Club Ska 67" on the other side which was a permanent resident in my car's cassette deck, circa 1993. I'm glad I grabbed this on CD when I had a chance, since Island is obviously content to let Trojan grab all the dollars/pounds from today's fans of old-time ska with their inferior, repetitive compilations.

      5 out of 5 stars Instant Bliss.......2002-08-10

This album is an automatic mood stimulant, as beautiful, peppy and innocent as anything I've ever heard. It's also not something everyone else owns, therefore it is a secret pleasure. I recommend it to anyone who isn't an idiot.

Percy has finally done a live album. He has never done one before and his voice is still holding up after all these years. The band captures the essence of what Percy's "story" is all about. Percy still sings the tunes like he is living them for the first time. This is a great addition for the soul library. His concerts are just like the cd. He is still the "King of Slow Soul."
