Love Like Yours: the Original Versions of the Songs That Inspired Dusty Springfi [Import]
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Britain's greatest pop diva, Dusty Springfield was also the finest white soul singer of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries; though a camp icon of glamorous excess in her towering beehive hairdo and panda-eye black mascara, the sultry intimacy and heartbreaking urgency of Springfield's voice transcended image and fashion, embracing everything from lushly orchestrated pop to gritty R&B to disco with unparalleled sophistication and depth. Connoisser. 2004.

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating insight.......2001-08-24
This generous compilation brings 19 mostly obscure original version of songs that Dusty Springfield later discovered and recorded.Always known for her love of black soul sound,Springfield not only introduced black stars to UK audience via her famous TV shows, but also covered many songs previosuly sung and recorded by less known black stars. Its fascinating insight into her inspiration to discover what actually built her music profile - just as Billie Holiday built herself on big voiced Bessie Smith (and Holiday herself had a small voice but in her mind, she followed Smith's example),Springfield often idolised powerful, gospel voices that she could never directly copy, choosing to interpret their songs in her own way.As this compilation shows,Springfield spread her magic dust on songs by Tommy Hunt ("I just dont know what to do with myself"),Jerry Butler ("Brand new me"),Thelma Houston ("Mixed up girl") and Martha & The Vandellas ("A Love like yours") and in many instances outdid originals, giving her versions distinctive breathy, husky glow. Not just another white singer who is covering black originals,Springfield always championed her black idols and did everything to spread their names in press. Some of the names here are well-known (Shirelles,Aretha,Lesley Gore) but in my opinion no one matches the fire of powerful Baby Washington, whose original "Breakfast in bed" (recorded a year before Springfield's "Memphis" album, not cover as its written in liner notes) absolutely overshawdows Springfield version and inspired me to search for more of her music.
